  • Police rescue kids from ‘kidnapper’

    The Lagos State Police Command yesterday rescued two children from a suspected female kidnapper in Yaba.

    Ya’u Mukaila, 10 and Mariam Jubril, 2, were rescued from the suspect, Mary Vera Henry along Little Road, by Yaba Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mary Ubangha, a Chief Superintendent (CSP).

    But the suspect claimed that Jubril looked like her missing 20-year-old daughter, who diviners told her had been reduced to a two-year-old.

    The suspect denied the kidnap allegation, claiming she was framed up by Shanta Orji and Mama Blessing, who allegedly paid some people N50,000 to plot against her.

    According to Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, the victims were kidnapped along Herbert Macaulay Way.

    He said the DPO noticed the woman was restless and suspicious, adding that she trailed

    Edgal said: “However, the suspect noticed that she was under surveillance and diverted into St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, Yaba. The DPO followed her up and warned the church security men to keep an eye on the woman.

    “She told them not to allow her exit the church without the police ascertaining their identities and mission to the church.

    “The security men obliged and brought the woman and the children before the DPO. During interrogation, the woman gave her name as Mary Vera Henry of 6, Akanni Street, Shomolu.

    “It was discovered that she was not the biological mother of the children, who are of different parents.

    “She claimed that she lost her 20-year-old daughter and when she went to some diviners, they told her the daughter had been reduced in size and stature to a two-year-old child. She claimed the two-year-old victim looked like her missing 20-year-old daughter.

    “The woman was arrested and taken to the station for further interrogation.”

    Continuing, Edgal said the victims’ parents- Jubril Garba and Mukaila Amidu-came to the station and identified them.

    Mukaila, the police said, explained that he sent his son on an errand and two-year-old Jubril followed him.

    Edgal said: “Along the road, the suspect lured the children away from their course to unknown destination. Investigation into the case is ongoing and effort is on to arrest the fleeing brother of the suspect believed to be a co-conspirator of the crime.”

    The police boss warned parents to stop sending their underage kids to the market unaccompanied, threatening to arrest, prosecute negligent parents, guardians under

    Sections 247 and 249 of Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.

  • Police kill suspected kidnapper

    Men of the Edo State Police Command have killed a member of a four-man kidnapping gang at Ugbor in Benin City during a shoot-out.

    The suspected kidnapper was gunned down after they kidnapped a business man, identified as Odion.

    Commissioner of Police Babatunde Kokumo, who addressed reporters, said his men accosted the kidnappers on Wednesday.

    Kokumo explained that the police swung into action after receiving report of the victim’s abduction.

    He said the victim was abducted at 8 pm on Tuesday night.

    The Edo police boss warned criminals to stay away from the state.

    Speaking to reporters, the victim said he was driving into his compound at Sapele road when the kidnappers blocked his car.

    His words: “I am a businessman. As I was driving into my compound, I saw two armed men walked towards my car with a short gun and a battle axe. They requested for money and I gave to them. They later asked me to step out to sit at the back and I obeyed. They took my ATM card.

    “They took me to an unknown destination. I was with them all through the night. From their discussion, I learnt they withdrew money from my bank account with my ATM. It was this morning that I was rescued.”

    DSS arraigns alleged kidnapper of bank manager

    The Department of State Services (DSS) yesterday arraigned the leader of a vigilance group, Emeke Agbabere, at a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for allegedly kidnapping a banker.

    Agbabere, the secretary of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government  Security, Peace and Advisory Committee, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy as well as kidnapping and illegal detention.

    The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Calistus Eze, told the court that the accused conspired with others at large to lure, kidnap and illegally detain Johnson Oyedokun, the branch manager of Unity Bank at Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government on February 26.

    He alleged that the accused with others at large conspired to lure and kidnap Oyedokun without the victim’s consent.

    Eze alleged that Agbabere, after luring and kidnapping Oyedokun, held him inside his illegal detention cell.

    “Agbabere demanded that Oyedokun should disclose privileged official information to secure his release.

    “This is an offence punishable under Section 1(1)(2)(b) of the Rivers State Kidnap Prohibition (Amendment Law) 2015,”  he said.

    The Chief Magistrate, Anthony Amadi-Nna, after listening to the prosecution counsel, directed that the case file be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to obtain legal advice.

    He ordered that the accused be remanded in Port Harcourt Maximum Prison, while adjourning the case indefinitely till the receipt of legal advice.

    The police in Delta State have arrested a suspected kidnapper identified as Okwose, at Kwale in Ndokwa West Local Government. This followed his alleged involvement in the abduction of a pastor.

    Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect was nabbed about 6:30pm on Sunday at Ogume junction on Ughelli/Asaba expressway.

    He alleged: “While on a stop-and-search, our officers and men intercepted a vehicle. Okwose was one of the three occupants. He was involved in the kidnap of an Ogume-based pastor on Kwale-Ogume road last October and has been at large.”

    Three persons have been arrested by the police at Oleh in Isoko South Local Government for alleged car theft.

    Aniamaka said: “About 4am on Monday, a police patrol team intercepted a motorcycle, a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Corolla on Igbide/Enwhe road.

    “Investigation shows that the cars were stolen from where they were parked by their owners. The suspects will soon be arraigned.”

    Police kill suspected kidnapper in Zamfara

    The Zamfara State Police Command yesterday said it killed a notorious kidnapper, arrested eight and recovered arms.

    Commissioner of Police Kenneth Embrimson, who displayed the body in Gusau, said he was killed in a gun battle.

    According to him, the command received reports that a gang of criminals stormed Ruwan-Gizo and Yartasha in Talata-Mafara Local Government Area, and kidnapped Bilyaminu Abdullahi.

    “The police quickly responded and laid ambush, and after an intense gun battle, which lasted for more than two hours, Abdullahi was rescued.

    “One of the bandits was killed while another escaped with gunshot wounds.

    “Two AK-47 rifles, 75 rounds of 7.62 MM and two motorcycles were recovered from the kidnappers,” he said.

    Embrimson added that a police team, on February 24, arrested two persons – a suspected bandit and kidnapper – at Daraga and Dankurmi areas in Maru Local Government.

    He said: “A locally-made gun and one round of 7.62 MM of AK-47 rifle were recovered from the suspects.

    “Five suspected kidnappers were arrested at Magarya in Zurmi council on February 23, while another suspected kidnapper and a robber were arrested on February 19.”

    The duo, he said, were arrested in Kabala and Yangaladima villages in Maradun and Maru councils.

    A suspected gunrunner, believed to be in charge of collecting ransoms for kidnappers, was also arrested.

    “We recovered N2.6 million and 21 pieces of Nigerien currencies from the suspect,” he said.

    Police kill suspected kidnapper in Ogun forest

    OPERATIVES of the Federal Special Anti – Robbery Squad (FSARS) have gunned down a suspected kidnapper during a search for members of a kidnapping gang at a forest in  Ilaro.

    One of the gang’s victim, Sanni Dan Nasarawa, who escaped from their gang’s den after he was kept there for one week in the forest, reported his abduction to the Police in Abeokuta, following which FSARS stormed the forest and shot dead a member of the gang while seven others escaped with bullet wounds.

    It was learnt that Sani Nasarawa escaped from the forest when the rope used to tie him snapped in the night while his abductors were fast asleep.

    In a statement, the Police spokesman in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspected kidnapper was shot dead on Friday morning on discovering their hide out after the FSARS combed the forest all through Thursday night.

    He said the dead suspect was a member of a kidnap syndicate terrorizing Ilaro and its environs.

    “He was a member of kidnapping syndicate when in the early hour of Friday February 2, 2018 he was shot dead by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad led by Uba Adam.

    “The gang have earlier kidnapped one Sanni Dan Nasarawa, took him to a thick forest where they tied him down for seven days waiting for his people to pay them ransom.

    “Luck however smiled on him when the rope they used to tie him got loose while his abductors were fast asleep. He subsequently escaped and ran to FSARS office in Abeokuta where he lodged complain.

    “Upon his report, the officer –in charge of FSARS quickly mobilized his men and followed the victim to the forest. The team combed the forest from 6 pm of 1st February up till about 4:00am of 2nd February before they came across the gang who engaged them in serious gun battle which lasted for almost an hour.

    “At the end of the encounter, one of the suspects was gunned down while others numbering about seven escaped with various degree of gunshot injuries.

    Oyeyemi appealed to the public, especially hospitals and traditional healers, to report anybody they see with gunshot injury in their vicinity.

    Police kick as Evans files N200m suit over seized trucks

    Suspected millionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (alias Evans), has urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to order the release of his seized 25 Mack trucks.

    Through his lawyer Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans said the trucks were seized without a court order.

    The lawyer said the police forcefully confiscated the trucks from Evans last June 15 without any court order.

    But, the police have urged the court to dismiss the suit as the trucks were proceeds of crime and were exhibits.

    Ogungbeje wants the court to award N200 million as general and exemplary damages against the police for the alleged violation of Evans’ rights under sections 36, 43, and 44 of the 1999 Constitution.

    But, in a counter-affidavit, the deponent Inspector Haruna Idowu, said he was on the team that investigated Evans’ case.

    He said the suspect acquired 11 trucks with proceeds of crime, adding that 10 of them were recovered by the police.

    He said the trucks were listed as exhibits in the criminal charges filed against Evans at the Lagos State High Court.

    “The applicant is the notorious and most dreaded armed robber and kidnapper known as Evans, who defiled police arrest for over 10 years and who had terrorised many states with his various gang members.

    “The applicant has no other source of livelihood except armed robbery and kidnapping as so many arms and ammunition were recovered from the applicant during his arrest.

    “The applicant had purchased various properties with proceeds of armed robbery and kidnapping.

    “The applicant purchased 11 trucks with proceeds of crime. The police recovered 10 in Lagos while they were not able to tow the remaining one from Anambra State to Lagos due to the fact that the applicant’s brother-in-law, Mr. Okwuchukwu Obiechina, and his wife had tampered with the brain box of the truck in a bid to pervert the course of justice.

    “The trucks recovered are proceeds of crime which are preserved and kept as exhibits to be tendered in the ongoing criminal prosecution of the application at the High Court of Lagos State,” Idowu said.

    Justice Rabiu Hadizat Shagari adjourned till April 17.

    The Police Command in Jigawa State yesterday arrested one of the nine kidnappers, who allegedly killed two captives after collecting N3 million ransom from their family, it was learnt.

    Command spokesman Abdu Jinjiri, a Superintendent (SP), told reporters in Dutse that the suspect, Datti Buba, 40, was arrested on Tuesday in Bauchi State after a tip-off.

    Jinjiri said the suspect allegedly connived with eight others to kidnap two children, aged 13 and 15, in Kafin-Madaki, Gwaram Local Government Area last year.

    “The Jigawa police command has succeeded in arresting a kidnapper, who had been on the run since last year.

    “He connived with eight others and kidnapped two persons from Kafin-Madaki in Gwaram Local Government Area and later killed them after collecting N3 million as ransom.

    “Eight other suspects are still on the run and the command is doing its best to apprehend them,” he said.

    The kidnappers had been terrorising residents of the area since last year.

    The suspect, Jinjiri said, would be charged to court.

    About 30 kidnappers, in January, last year, kidnapped the head of Rijin in Gwaram Local Government, Alhaji Garba Mamud, and his brother, Malam Dauda Mamuda.

    However, the police later apprehended one of the suspects in connection with the incident.

    Mob set ablaze suspected female kidnapper in Ilorin

    A suspected female kidnapper was lynched and set ablaze by angry mob at Offa Garage area of Ilorin on Monday.

    It was gathered that the woman had gone to fetch a set of twins from an Arabic school in Kilanko area of Ilorin.

    NAN gathered that the woman had approached the school on the pretext that their mother had asked her to pick up the twins from the school.

    A source in the Arabic school, who pleaded anonymity, told our reporter that luck ran out of the suspected kidnapper when the twins mother was contacted and denied sending anybody to pick up her children.

    The source said the mother of the twins hurried to the school and confronted the woman that she did not sent her to take custody of her twin.

    An eye witness told NAN that her outburst attracted passersby to the school where the suspect was still being held.

    The eye witness said the passersby later pulled the suspected kidnapper out of the school premises and marched her to Offa Garage.

    It was learnt that efforts by residents around the Arabic school to prevail on the mob to hand over the suspect to the police fell on deaf ears.

    It was gathered that the suspected kidnapper was then lynched and set on fire at about 11 a.m.

    When NAN got to the scene of the crime, charred remains of the lynched woman were still lying on the road.

    When contacted, Kwara Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the incident.

    He told NAN on phone that the police were on the trail of persons responsible for the the killing.

    “Before we got the information, the deed had been done and as we speak, policemen are already there making effort to arrest the culprits.

    “I can assure you we are going to do just that because it is lawless for people to take life of another human no matter the offence,” Okasanmi said.

    The police spokesman, therefore, warned residents not to take laws into their hands by not indulging in jungle justice.
