    Enugu demolishes another kidnappers’ den

In furtherance of its relentless war against kidnapping and criminality in Enug, the State Government has reduced another kidnappers’ den at Nike in Enugu East LGA to rubbles.

The twin semi-detached bungalows located at Nokpa, near Alulu, Nike had been serially used to house kidnap victims pending their ransom payment and was demolished in line with Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State, according to the state government.

Briefing newsmen after the operation on Friday, Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Hon. Uche Anya, reiterated Governor Peter Mbah’s determination to wipe out every vestige of kidnappers and violent criminals in the state, insisting that “this is an open warfare and will not stop until we wipe out the criminal elements.”

“On 27th of September, at about 7pm, this gang of hardened criminals abducted one Chibuoke Charles and Mr. Emma Okeke around the

Federal University of Allied Health Sciences (formerly Federal School of Dental Technology and Therapy), Trans Ekulu, Enugu, and took them to this den. They were able to get ransom for one, and hoped to get a ransom of N40m from the other victim.

“Their hit team disappeared to their stronghold in Imo State, not knowing that the security agencies were on their trail. Thank God for the sophisticated security infrastructure that Governor Mbah has procured for the state and thanks to the brilliance and bravery of the police crack squad. The gang was overpowered and arrested. They took the crack team to this notorious den.

“Members of their gang guarding the kidnap victim opened fire on rescue team, but were equally overpowered and neutralised in the process of rescuing the victim. This happened on 29th of September.

“Three automatic rifles in addition to other dangerous weapons, fetish objects, and hard drugs were recovered from them. So, even their charms failed them.

“This is yet another warning to all criminals in the state to relocate or meet their doom because this administration is determined to go all the way to secure the lives and property of Ndi Enugu.

“This is also another warning that the government will not spare any property used for kidnapping, armed robbery, and the likes in Enugu. The Governor Mbah Administration will not allow you to enjoy your proceeds of crimes in Enugu State. The government will not only hunt you down, but also demolish the property involved in line with the provisions of relevant laws of the state, particularly Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State.

“Let me remind the landlords that the onus is on them to do their due diligence before accepting any tenants. They should also be watchful to know what goes on in their property. If they see something, they should say something immediately because the government will not entertain any excuses,” Anya stated.

  • Our ordeal in kidnappers’ den, by victims

Three women, who were abducted by four kidnappers, have narrated how they were tortured to pay ransom before they were released.

The women were kidnapped at spots in Benin City, Edo State by the gang, who posed as commercial bus driver and passengers.

One of the victims, who gave her name as Faith, said she boarded a bus to Sapele Road while going home, but she didn’t know that the driver and passengers were kidnappers.

She said she was blindfolded and taken to an unknown place where she was tortured and raped.

The woman said her abductors demanded N5million from her parents as ransom, adding that N300,000 was withdrawn from her account.

On how she recognised the suspects, she said they didn’t wear masks on the day they dropped her after spending three nights with them.

Another victim, Princess Eweka, said she was going home and was on Ekenwan Road when a bus stopped and she was dragged inside.

She said a male passenger was beaten up and thrown out of the bus.

Eweka said she was tortured and beaten up, after which her parents paid N500,000 ransom.

She said she recognised the suspects because they did not wear masks.

The third victim, who gave her name as Blessing, said the kidnappers snatched her N400,000.

She said she was abducted on Airport Road and taken to an unknown spot.

Blessing said she refused to eat while in the kidnappers’ den for four days.

Police Commissioner Babatunde Kokumo paraded the suspects, namely Ikechukwu Emmanuel, Friday Ihaza, Godspower Ezemene and Okonofua Friday.

He said the command bust the gang following intelligence report, adding that they would soon be arraigned.

The suspects said they resorted to kidnapping because of hunger.

  • ‘Our ordeal in kidnappers’ den’

Two siblings, Abdusalam Olusa and Musa Olusa, abducted by gunmen between Ajowa-Akoko and Akunu-Akoko last weekend, have narrated their ordeal for six days in kidnappers’ den.

They recalled how they were taken into the bush after suspected kidnappers waylaid them.

The siblings said the miscreants maltreated them.

Relations and neighbours at the Ora quarters, Ajowa home of the freed siblings jubilated at the weekend over their return.

The elder sibling, Abdusalam, who nursed a leg wound, following long trek in the bush, said they were abducted while travelling in a Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle to neighbouring Akunu town.

“When our vehicle slowed down at a failed portion on the road, two gunmen emerged from the bush and stopped us,” he said.

Abdulsalam said a minute later four others came out and ordered them to come out of the vehicle.

He went on: “They collected our phones and ordered us to move to the bush. That was how our journey to the wilderness began. We abandoned our vehicle. In the first night, they tied us with a rope. They beat us up like animals.

“The hoodlums were armed with guns, cutlasses and axes. At times they wore masks. They also painted their faces with charcoal and blue powder, to disguise.

“Most times, four of them would go out for raids, while two others would watch over us where they tied us. Those who went out for raids would bring chicken, yam and other foodstuffs.

“Our kidnappers have informants. They told us that they would kill us if the ransom negotiation failed.

“We could not communicate with our family because the abductors seized our phones. There was no place to sleep; we drank water meant for cows.”

The victims implored the Ondo State government to buy patrol vehicles to monitor Akoko boundaries.

They said the bush should be combed to fish out criminals.

The siblings said vigilance group members should be given incentives.

They said the government was not sincere about fighting insecurity, as the police were not funded.

The siblings said recently, Kemi, the wife of Alauga of Auga, Oba Samuel Agunloye and her driver were abducted for five days.

“Also, Oluyani of Iyani Akoko, Oba Sunday Daodu and his second- in-command were kidnapped on Ikare-Owo Road.

“The former regent of Akungba-Akoko, Mrs. Toyin Omosowon, was abducted at Ose on Owo-Ikare Akoko Road.”

Akoko community spokesman Ibrahim Kilani said Akoko, being the gateway to Ondo State, deserved special security attention.

He lamented that the police operated without vehicles and tools, stressing that shortage of policemen needed to be addressed.

Kilani said police posts have been closed down in the community.

Over 200 kidnapper camps destroyed in Lagos – CP

The Acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Imohimi Edgal, said on Thursday that over 200 kidnappers’ camps have been destroyed in various parts of the state.

Edgal, who stated this at a one-day workshop for stakeholders on the safety of students and staff of Model Colleges and upgraded secondary schools in the state, said the state police command has also concluded arrangement to deploy armed officers to some model colleges, especially schools located in riverine areas so as to forestall any incident of kidnapping.

The police commissioner, who was represented at the workshop by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Bolaji Salami, said kidnapping was not peculiar to Lagos State or Nigeria.

He said kidnapping in Lagos was mainly for ransom collection because the kidnappers were formerly armed robbers and pipeline vandals who were frustrated by fierce battle that the police had engaged them.

Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Adebule, who also spoke at the workshop, said the state’s special taskforce has been directed to embark on demolition exercise of all illegal shanties located around all public schools in the state.

The “Ile Zik 12 men” were brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempted kidnap and possession of arms and ammunition.

The bus stop is named after a four-storey building built by the first President of Nigeria, the late Dr Nnamidi Azikiwe.

  • Questions as Army burns kidnappers’ den in Aba

Questions as Army burns kidnappers’ den in Aba

Soldiers from 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army have set ablaze a house near Aba, Abia State, allegedly used by kidnappers to detain their victims until ransom is paid. But how long was the den used by the criminals, and why did it escape the villagers’ notice? Sunny Nwankwo reports

IT was a small shelter, no bigger than a farm hut. Its corrugated roofing sheets had seen better days. The mud wall looked fairly strong, dignified with sheets of window louvres. But tucked in the bushes  in the backyards of a village near Aba in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State, the mudhouse was a curious structure.

What was it used for in Umuagbai village, a sleepy community not too far from the bustling Enyimba City?

The soldiers who visited it had one answer: a kidnappers’ den where victims were holed up while ransom negotiations went on.

It won’t serve that purpose anymore. For the soldiers promptly descended on it, smashing its wall down before setting it on fire. The operation was led by the Commanding Officer of the battalion, Umar Sidi Kasim.

The gang was said to be operating from neighbouring Rivers State. The kingpin and members of the group, it was gathered, relied on some local members, usually commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators, who tracked and provided information on targets before the kingpin and others would move in for the kill.

The local foot soldiers reportedly set up the small den where the victims were kept pending the outcome of negotiations.

Speaking on how his men busted the kidnappers’ hideout just over 30 minutes’ drive from the heart of the commercial town, Lt. Col. Sidi brought it all down to a persistent, long and meticulous effort of the battalion’s intelligence team following a tip-off.

Sidi said the hoodlums had been terrorising Aba and its environs, kidnapping many, one of whom was a Dubai-based businesman.

It was gathered that the Dubai based victim whose name was yet to be ascertained was said to have been kidnapped by the gang at Okpu Umuobo being being taken taken to a location which was discovered to be Umuagbai village.

It was gathered that while the kidnappers were on their way to their hideout, soldiers got hint of their movement and laid ambush for them. On sighting the soldiers, the kidnappers reportedly engaged the army in a shootout which forced them to abandon their victim and a black coloured Land Rover Sports Utility Vehicle with registration number Lagos FST 754 DC.

Two members of the gang were reported dead during the shootout, while two others said to be kingpins of the group escaped during the crossfire; the victim was said to have escaped from them.

Questions arise: how long has  the kidnappers’ hideout been in existence? How many victims were taken there? Why did the villagers not spot the den as soon as it was put up, and why did they not report to the authorities?

Sidi said that other gang members were being trailed even as he confirmed that the gang came to Aba from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to strike whenever their target was spotted in town by their informants in Aba and would immediately leave for Port Harcourt after their operation, leaving their victim in the custody of their gang members in Aba. It was said that the local gang members were the ones who released the victim as soon as a deal was struck with the  family.

He said that burning down the house was part of government’s step to discourage people from using their houses as hideouts for kidnappers and keeping victims of kidnapping.

Urging the residents of Aba to provide the army with prompt information about the activities of criminal elements within their vicinity, the army colonel assured that the army would ensure that residents of Aba sleep with their eyes closed.

In a similar development, the soldiers attached to Operation Mensa 14 Brigade, Ohafia Forward Operation Base (FOB), Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government of Abia State have confiscated an unmarked white truck carrying about 50,000 liters of unrefined crude oil.

Speaking to newsmen at Umuebulungwu village in Asa, Ukwa West LGA, the 14 Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General Lawrence Fejokwu represented by Captain Ishaya Banki, the Officer in-charge of FOB, said they were able to trace and confiscate the truck through with the assistance of the Umuebulungwu community. He, however, attributed the success of the operation to the fallout of the operation “Crocodile Smile” recently launched by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur  Burutai.

Banki, lamenting that the country was losing so much money to the activities of vandals, described the act of the vandals as economic sabotage to the country’s economy and President Muhammdu Buhari administration’s efforts to reposition the economy in the face of the global economic downturn.

He warned vandals to look for something meaningful to do, saying that they would not fold their arms to watch criminals satisfy their selfish desires and cause more pains to Nigerians.

“The hoodlums laid a pipe from the source where they were siphoning the crude from to the bank of Ohando waterfront, using a pumping machine to pump the crude into the waiting truck. When we got the information, we analysed and swung into action. But by the time we got to this waterfront they had already moved the truck and smartly covered their tracks. But with the help of the villagers and our intelligence, we were able to trace the truck to this village (Umuebulungwu) and have been guarding it since Wednesday.

“We are however making arrangements to tow back the truck to safety and awaiting further directives. So far, from our investigations, we believe the crude in the truck is about fifty thousand liters and efforts are on to track the owner of the truck. But like I said, our next moves will be determined by the orders I get from my superior”.

Some of the nearby residents denied having knowledge of the vandals as they claimed that they saw the truck parked in their neighbourhood while they returned home from their farms.

Recall that the federal government had launched the operation “Crocodile Smile” to curb the activities of vandals and pirates on the country’s waterways, an exercise that has started yielding fruit in Abia State.

  • ‘Early detection of kidnappers’ den due to Ajimobi’s pro-activeness’

‘Early detection of kidnappers’ den due to Ajimobi’s pro-activeness’

A socio-cultural organisation, Oyo Patriotic Front, has commended the state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi over the early detection of another kidnappers’ den at Ojoku Village in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of the state.

The organization, in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday by its Chairman, Chief Jare Adepoju, attributed the early detection of the den by the police to the proactive measures taken by the governor immediately after the Soka incident.

“We are aware that the government has ordered all security agencies in the state to comb the nooks and crannies of the state to smoke out these nefarious characters. There should be no let in their pursuit” said the group.

It noted that after the discovery of the kidnappers’ den at the Soka area of Ibadan early last year, Governor Ajimobi had instituted regular meetings with all the security agencies in the state with a view to stemming the tide.

The group also said that it was aware of the fact that undercover agents were also deployed all over the state to monitor the activities of unscrupulous elements, particularly the kidnappers and their possible hideouts.
