Dislodged militants now enroll as private guards – Police

Lagos residents have been warned to ensure circumspection when employing domestic workers, and to allow proper profiling of their domestic employees by the police.

Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Fatai Owoseni gave the warning Friday, disclosing that some of the militants/kidnappers dislodged from creeks now disguise as private security guards.

Owoseni said the police were already taking census of some of the estates where these kidnappers have been posted by their firms as guards, without knowing they were spying on victims.

He also disclosed that cases of criminality perpetrated by domestic helps were on the increase especially with respect to drivers fleeing with their employers’ vehicles.

The police boss warned estate managers, private guards to stop denying policemen on patrol, duty access into the premises, adding that the command was working with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address anomalies.

Owoseni said: “Criminal elements and suspected militants/kidnappers have found themselves enlisted into services of private security company, where they choose the estates they want to go and work.

“It gives them platform to do monitoring and then give information to their cohorts outside. The command wants to advice Lagos residents on the need to profile domestic servants and drivers they employ.

“By doing that, they would be helping to secure themselves, protect valuables and assist the police in its quest to reduce crime to minimal level in Lagos.”

Giving details of arrests made by the command between Tuesday and Friday, Owoseni said a syndicate that advertises and present themselves as drivers in order to steal from their employers was apprehended.

He said: “They do so in connivance with guards in some of the houses they work as drivers. We got four members of the gang after a Hyundai jeep which was stolen from the owner’s home, was intercepted at Ondo State, enroute Abuja.

“Through diligent investigation, kingpin James Jacob was arrested. During interrogation, three others were arrested. On a serial basis, they give out themselves as drivers. After working for the family for some time, they steal the car or connive with guards.

“They have confessed that there are five other cars stolen in that manner. James Jacob has been paraded last year for a case of rape and stealing of vehicle. He raped his boss’ house help and stole the car. He was charged to court but unfortunately, he got bail and refused to learn his lessons.

“The gang had number plates belonging to government offices, which they use to move stolen vehicles to places they sell them.”

Owoseni also said the command through the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), arrested four suspected tricksters, armed robbers, who usually shoot their victims after luring them to particular locations under the guise of buying wares from them.

Wilfred Ehi, 30; Bright Eloho, 24; Olanrewaju Kamilu, 33 and Ekeme Gbmedu, 22, were arrested at Olamoti Hotel, Iyana-Iba by a decoy team.

They were said to have shot a policeman, who disguised as a phone seller and stood at a place they asked him to stay with the phone.

According to Owoseni, the command has received about 13 reports on the activities of the suspects, prompting an undercover operation to arrest them.

He said: “They ask the sellers to bring phones to the hotel. Once the person got there, they fire the person and collect the phone. They fired one of the policemen who carried phones to them as a seller. He was shot in the leg in the course of the operation.

“Police eventually had upper hand and kingpin of the syndicate was nabbed, leading to arrest of three others.

“A KIA Optimal saloon car, four expensive telephones, two wristwatches, a cannon E087D camera, laptop, WiFi and a wrap of weeds was recovered from them.

“We also arrested three suspects including the brother of producer, Seun Kareem alias Egbegbe for being his accomplices. The suspects, Lawal Kazeem,  Olalekan Yusuf and Muyideen Shoyombo have confessed to the crime and would be charged to court.

“Five members of a syndicate that specialises in faking to be haulage contractors were arrested. The command has been on their trail until the last operation where the command worked with victim.  “They present themselves as haulage contractors to big companies and individuals wanting to transport goods from Lagos to other parts of the country. They use their trucks or those of victims to carry goods, which they divert and sell around Shagamu and then, they take the trucks away.

“RRS tracked and arrested five suspects. Two of the diverted trucks were dismantled and sold to different spare-parts dealer. The two have been recovered. They confessed to other trucks they have diverted and butcher like that.

“Flour that was given to them to transport out of Lagos has been traced to the receiver. It has been recovered and worth N46m.”

•Governor on right track, says aide

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello yesterday stormed Okene to demolish buildings used by suspected kidnappers, terrorists and robbers to perpetrate their crime.

The governor was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, and heads of other security agencies.

Two of such structures have so far been demolished – one in Oyunkoko, Okene council, belonging to a suspected kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Tijanni Bakare, and the notorious Ahlul-Sunnah Mosque in Inike, which was reportedly hijacked in 2015 by Boko Haram members and used as an operational base.

At the demolition, Bello vowed to implement the Anti-kidnapping, Robbery and Terrorism Law to the latter. He warned those harbouring criminals to repent or have their structures pulled down.

CP Inalegwu said it would no longer be business as usual for criminals operating in any part of the state.

“This is a strong message to kidnappers and hoodlums to change their ways; they should work hard and earn a decent living.

“We want to make Kogi safe so that residents and travellers will not have the fear of being kidnapped,” he said.

Governor Bello has been described as “well prepared for 21st century leadership” as he strives to become the best governor ever in the history of the state.

His Director General on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, who addressed reporters yesterday, said those who think Bello is an ‘accidental governor’ are bereft of how he has developed his leadership skills over the years.

According to Fanwo, events of the last 13 months are beginning to “sound an unmistakable death knell on the politics of the pot for the few”, insisting that Bello’s achievements, in just over a year in office, showed his intent to break records, affect lives and become the “best ever” in the history of the state.

He said: “I am sure the American Ambassador was impressed by what he saw in Kogi, and most importantly, the hunger in the eyes of the governor to put the state on the right track. “American Ambassadors don’t go everywhere; they go to where there is the right drive for development and human empowerment. The significance of his visit has dawned on those who never believed in what we are doing. They have been forced to look at us and appreciate what the governor is doing to develop the state.”

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello Wednesday stormed Okene in the Central Senatorial district of the state, demolishing buildings used by suspected kidnappers, terrorists and armed robbers in perpetrating their crimes.

Accompanied by the state commissioner of police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu and other security chiefs in the state, the governor ordered the pulling down of two structures, with more buildings earmarked to go.

The building of a suspected kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Tijanni Bakare was the first to be pulled down at Oyunkoko ward in Okene LG.

The enforcement team also demolished the Ahlul-Sunnah Mosque in Inike, which was reportedly hijacked in 2015 by members of the Boko Haram terrorist group and suspected to be serving as operational base for their nefarious activities.

Speaking at the demolition exercise, Governor Bello vowed to implement the Anti-kidnapping, Robbery and Terrorism law in the state to the letter.

He warned those that are in the habit of harbouring criminals to repent or have their structures pulled down forthwith.

CP Inalegwu said it would no longer be business as usual for criminals operating in any part of the state.

“This is a strong message to kidnappers and hoodlums that they must change their ways. They should work hard and earn a decent living.

“We want to make Kogi safe so that anyone living here or travelling through Kogi will not have fear of being kidnapped”, he said.

  • Fear grips Ikorodu community as militants return to terrorise Isawo residents

Residents of Isawo in Ikorodu, Lagos State, say they now live in palpable fear following the return of militants who are terrorising people in the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the militants, mostly kidnappers and pipeline vandals, were chased out of the area in August last year following bloody clashes in the community.

NAN reports that scores of people were killed in 2016 during clashes between militants and residents of Isawo community, leading to the deployment of a joint military taskforce in the area.

Residents told NAN on Monday that many of the hoodlums had returned to Isawo and neighbouring communities, robbing and terrorising residents.

“The militants are back to Isawo area. They brandish guns openly during daytime and rob people at night; many residents are now living in fear.

“The men are boasting that they are back to revenge the killings of their people in Isawo last year.

“For instance, Olusola Oke Street junction in Isawo near Majidun is one of the militants’ meeting points where they smoke Indian hemp openly.

“Residents don’t go out daily until 7a.m, and before 6 p.m., everyone is back home,’’ a female resident, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN in Isawo.

She said some residents had relocated from the area for their safety since the return of the hoodlums.

Another resident, who also sought anonymity, told NAN: “When we thought that these people were gone forever, they came again.

“We want the military and the police to check them before they start killing again.’’

Reacting to the development, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, Lagos State Police spokesman, told NAN that the command was re-strategizing the security arrangements in the state, including Ikorodu area.
Famous-Cole said more police patrol teams would be deployed in the area, and urged residents to provide useful information on the activities of the hoodlums.

, told NAN :”I don’t have any report yet to suggest that militants are back in those areas.

“But Lagos State Governor has approved the return of swamp buggies to open up the creeks in those areas to enable us carry out in-depth patrols,” he said.

The swamp buggy is a motor vehicle used to traverse boggy swamp terrain.

Buggies are able to move about on dry land, shallow mud, sand, shallow water and deep mud.

NAN recalls that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Idris Ibrahim, on Aug. 4, 2016 visited Isawo creeks in Ikorodu neighbourhood over the activities of militants.

Kidnappers in Kano operating with tricycles

Kidnappers in Kano State now pose as commercial tricycle operators to abduct their victims, it was learnt.
Investigations showed that the driver hypnotises the passengers before driving to an unknown destination.
An escapee, Musa Danbaba, said he boarded a tricycle on France road and no sooner than he entered the tricycle that he became dizzy and lost his memory.
Instead of the driver to convey him to his Igbo Road destination, he headed another way. Danbaba shouted but the driver pretended not to hear and sped off.
According to him, as the driver drove on top speed, he summoned courage and jumped out of the moving tricycle, collapsed but subsequently regained consciousness and headed to his planned destination.
Another victim was caught up in a traffic jam and was able to disembark before boarding another one.
Chairman of the Tricycle Operators Association Sani Sa’id Dan Kwari, who confirmed the situation, said his association has discussed with the police on ways to arrest culprits.
According to him the perpetrators are not members of the association, as all their members are registered with identification numbers issued by the Kano Road and Transport Agency (KAROTA).
He said the culprits operate when genuine tricycle operators must have closed for the day.
To avoid falling victim, Dan Kwari warned passengers against boarding tricycles whose driver shares his seat with someone else.

  • RRS arrests three fleeing kidnappers

Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have arrested three persons who fled Ibadan for Lagos after allegedly collecting N3million ransom on a kidnapped woman.

Funsho Adekunle, 31, Charles Ezeilo, 32, and Obioha Nnaji were nabbed in Abule Egba.

The police in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, on discovering that the kidnappers were heading to Lagos with the victim’s Toyota Highlander, radioed their Lagos counterparts for assistance.

On receiving the radio signal, RRS operatives tracked the vehicle to the Shrine, a night club in Ikeja, from where the suspects were said to have moved it to Abule Egba.

At Abule Egba, the RRS arrested Ezeilo before recovering the 2005 Toyota Highlander model marked LND 954 EE.

Ezeilo led the police to arrest another Adekunle and Nnaji  at the Shrine, but another suspect simply identified as Theophilus is at large.

Adekunle, a fashion designer around Felele, Ibadan, where the kidnapping is believed to have taken place, told RRS: “Theophilus handed over the car to me in Ibadan and told me to look for a buyer. I brought the car to Lagos because I know that I would get a buyer quickly for the car. The instruction from him was that I sell the Highlander at N800, 000”.

“I got a buyer in Ondo State. He has bought a car from me before, a fairly clean Toyota Corolla. He bought it for N550, 000. I took the car to him on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where he paid me before moving the car away.

“Charles is my friend of over five years. We met at Redeemed Church, Ogba, where I was a chorister. I gave him the car to help me warehouse it for me to get a buyer. He took the car from me at the Shrine to his house in Abule Egba.”

The case has been taken up by Oyo State Anti-kidnapping team for further investigations.

  • Police arrest 19 suspected kidnappers, recover arms, ammunition

Police arrest 19 suspected kidnappers, recover arms, ammunition

The Lagos State Police Command Wednesday said it arrested 19 suspected kidnappers last month and recovered 18 guns, 26 live ammunition, as well as 22 vehicles.

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni stated this while briefing reporters on the activities of the command for the month of February.

Fourteen of the 19 suspected kidnappers were arrested on Tuesday after their gang allegedly abducted two private guards at Adebayo Market in Bariga.

It was gathered that gunmen numbering about 24 stormed the market and whisked away two of the private guards, whom they accused of being stumbling blocks to their gaining access to the premises.

They were said to have whisked the victims to a place known as Ososa where two teams of policemen invaded and rescued them.

According to Owoseni, the kidnap suspects were being shielded from the media because efforts were on to apprehend their accomplices.

He said that they would be paraded and then charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.

Owoseni disclosed that out of 25 distress calls received by the police through the control room last month, 20 were successfully prevented.

The police chief also commended his personnel for smashing interstate robbery syndicates, arresting suspects and rescuing victims.

He said: “Police got 25 distress calls in February and through quick response, 20 were successfully prevented. Within the same period, 24 armed robbery suspects and 19 suspected kidnappers were arrested. Fourteen of the kidnappers were arrested yesterday (Tuesday) at Bariga.

“Eight suspected cultists were arrested. A robbery suspect died in the course of battle with police.

18 guns were recovered with 26 rounds of live ammunition, while 22 different cars were recovered from criminal elements.”

According to Owoseni, a Toyota Highlander vehicle that was snatched from its owner in Ibadan was recovered, the victim rescued and three suspects apprehended, adding that the suspects and exhibits have been moved to Oyo State Command for further action.

He debunked reports that one Tope died in the custody of the police at Lion Building on Monday, insisting that the only suspect who was arrested during the raid and found to be ill, was released to his parents.

Owoseni stated that the suspect, Kayode Olasukunmi was found to be asthmatic and he was immediately handed over to his parents who took him home with them, adding that the young man was still alive.

He said: “There was no person with the name Tope that was arrested during the raid in Lagos Island. Of the 187 persons arrested, one Kayode Olasukunmi was discovered to be ill during screening and he was taken to a hospital. His parents were contacted and they disclosed that he was asthmatic and that they usually used local methods to treat him. The young man was released to his parents. His parents are here to speak for themselves. The young man is still alive. No Tope was arrested during the raid and no one died inside Lion Building.

“Also, the police did not use lethal weapon was used on the people. Instead, a policeman was injured in the course if the mayhem. The people who crowded Lion Building are beneficiaries of hooliganism and street fighting in the area, who were displeased that the suspects were charged to court.

“Out of the 187 suspects arrested, 63 were released during screening because they have a credible means of livelihood. The remaining 124 were charged to court and 112 were convicted. The Magistrate freed 12 of them including the said pregnant woman after warning them seriously. Drugs and other substances were recovered from the suspects.”

    •’Victims lured with job offer’

Do kidnappers and ritualists use job interviews to lure victims to Mende, Maryland?
This is the puzzle the police are seeking to unravel following a message which went viral on social media yesterday.
It was gathered that police commissioner Fatai Owoseni has directed Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives to investigate the matter.
Those behind the scheme were said to have sent messages to applicants’ invited for “assessment” at 1, Olabisi Close, Mende also known as Guinness House. They were asked to call Human Resources on 08074645567.
Though calls to the number were not picked, a search on True Caller indicated that the number was registered as Corps Ana.
A source, who said he called earlier, told The Nation that a woman answered and gave her name as Vivian.
According to him, the woman asked for his interview date and advised him to ensure he didn’t miss out because he wouldn’t have a second chance.
An applicant, who claimed to have escaped after a man saw a popular church’s wristband on her, said the man asked her to run as those in the building were using charms on their victims.
She called on the police and other security agencies to investigate the address, warning job seekers to stay off vacancies advertised on a social media platform.
The victim said: “It’s God that saved me. I applied for a job via Jiji. I was called for interview in Maryland, Lagos. I got to Maryland, took a bike to the location for the interview. When I got to the lonely building in Mende, the motorcycle dropped me and left.
“There’s no one to ask question. I called the number that was attached to the message to say I was at the venue. He picked and said his men were downstairs. I looked around and saw two men, the look on their faces was not funny.
“They asked me to open the message for them to see, I opened it, after reading, they said I belong to room one, and that I should switch off my phone before climbing the stairs. I told them I wasn’t expecting any call, they said it’s compulsory.
“I asked them how long the interview will last and they said three to four hours. I was tired. I told them to give me a minute to let me inform my people that I won’t be home early. As I told them, l went towards the gate to call my sister. While on the call, two men came down making them four.
“They started shouting at me that I was wasting their time. That it’s like I wasn’t ready for the job. As this was happening, a guy from nowhere came behind me; all I heard was “my case is different “and I said so is mine.
“He said he saw the Winners’ bangle I was wearing that I should meet him outside the gate. I followed him, he asked what brought me here, I told him I came for an interview. He said I should thank my God that I saw him if not, it would be a different story by evening.
“That I should leave the place immediately that the people are using charms on victims. I thanked him and entered a bike that dropped one guy at the gate there and left. They called but I didn’t pick. This morning they sent a text that my interview has been rescheduled.
“Let’s be vigilant with online jobs. I have not been myself since but I thank God for saving me because I don’t know what the story would have been.”
Contacted, the command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) confirmed that an investigation has begun into the matter.
