  • Kidnapping: Ogori under siege

Ogori in Ogori -Manongo local government of Kogi State in the past two months, has known no peace as most people plying the Ageva/Ogori road have fallen victim of kidnapping, robbery and assault even as there have been no report of clashes with Fulani herdsmen over grazing in the area.

To check the activities of these hoodlums, we strongly appeal to the Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and other security agencies particularly state security to intensify surveillance on the Ageva road and Ogori town as Xenophobia is gradually threatening the peace and economic well-being of the community and her neighbours.

The Nigerian police in Ogori have not been proactive enough to check the ugly mess because reports of kidnapping are handled with levity.

Police arrest notorious cult leader in Rivers

The Rivers state Police command Friday paraded a notorious cult leader Mitchel Tamuno and two of his gang members for alleged cult activities and kidnapping of a 14 year-old JS2, female student of a Unity School in the state.

The victim, (name withheld), was reportedly abducted on her way from evening service, April 14, 2016 around her Abuloma residence in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of the state, and was taken to Elimgbu Community in Obio/Akpor LGA of the state and where she was detained for four days.

Her captors demanded N10 million ransom from her father who is a Pastor, the sum was yet to be raised before she escaped from the kidnappers’ den, and was taken to a nearby Police station.

Her abduction and escape led to the arrest of the criminal gang which allegedly holds sway within the Trans-Amadi and Abuloma areas of the state.

Parading the criminals, spokesman of the command, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said Tamuno, leader of the dreaded Iceland cult group and his members have long terrorised the area with their criminal activities, including kidnapping and collecting of huge ransom from  innocent residents,  including their own relatives.

He said one of the suspects Godwin Pina, who is also the informant in several kidnap cases in the area as well as the student’s was arrested when he went to cash the sum of N50, 000 paid into their(kidnappers), account for the feeding and upkeep of their victim, pending when the ransom money would be raised and paid.

According to Muhammad four AK-47 rifle and hundreds rounds of live ammunitions were recovered from them.

He assured that peace and tranquility have returned to the area since their arrest and residents could now sleep with their two eyes closed.

He said, the Police last month arrested 70 suspected kidnappers, cultists and armed robbers across the state. A total of 25 of them were killed in a shootout with the Police, and 11 AK 47 rifles, 17 other assorted firearms and 480 different live ammunition recovered from the suspected criminals.

He assured that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as possible.

The three suspects admitted they committed the crime and expressed regrets for their negative lifestyle.

Earlier in the briefing, the Police narrated, “On April 14, 2016, a young girl of about 14 years was kidnapped while he was on her way back from Church and was taken to an uncompleted building in Elimgbu, Port Harcourt. Her captors kept her there for about four days while they were calling for ransom from her parents.

“While the kidnappers were fast asleep in the day time, the girl saw a ladder and used it to scale through the fence and escaped. She walked through the forest till she began to hear sound of vehicle and traced it to the road where she waved a vehicle to stop.

“The driver stooped and she told the driver that she escaped from kidnappers’ den and would want to contact her father, who is a pastor in Bayelsa State.

“The Good Samaritan called the victim’s father who directed that she be taken to any nearby Police station. Before then, the kidnappers had already called the victim’s demanding N10 million ransom. They equally forwarded an account detail to the victim’s father.

“One of the kidnapers (Godwin Pina) went to the bank immediately he noticed that the sum of N50, 000 had been paid into the account for the upkeep of their victim, pending when the ransom demanded would be raised. Before then, the police ensured that the account was blocked. He was arrested at the bank.

“When the suspect was arrested, he then opened up that their boss, Mitchel was staying in Okrika. Then the Anti-kidnapping unit moved to Abam in Okrika and arrested Mitchel and 10 other boys in his house. Two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him. On interrogation, he (Mitchel) said he had other two AK 47 rifles with one Iyalla Appolos somewhere in Ozuboko area of Abuloma, in Port Harcourt City local Government Area of the state. We moved in there and Iyalla was arrested and the two AK 47 rifles were recovered from him.

“Iyalla does not participate in kidnapping, but his only task is to release the guns to the gang for operations, but whenever they embark on any successful operation and are back, they give him (Iyalla), part of the ransom.”

“Muhammad continued, Pina confessed that the kidnap gang also planned and executed a female oil mogul in the same Abuloma area and collected N9 million ransom.

“They also disclosed that Mitchel’s Toyota Camry was always used to move their kidnap victims, including one Chief Ajie from Abuloma and Pina’s Uncle’s wife also. Pina gave information to kidnappers for his uncle’s wife to be kidnapped. N5 million was paid before she was released,” he said.

  • El-Rufa’i promises to end kidnapping in Kaduna

El-Rufa’i promises to end kidnapping in Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State has promised to end incessant cases of kidnapping to guarantee the safety of lives and property of the citizens in the state.

El-Rufa’i made the promise on Saturday during a town hall meeting in Kachia, Kachia Local Government Area of the state.

He said the state government had noted with concern the spate of kidnapping, especially in Kaduna metropolis, adding that “the ugly scenario would soon be a thing of the past’’.

He said the state had recorded significant stride in addressing indices of insecurity, including killings of innocent persons and cattle rustling.

The governor expressed regrets that perpetrators of such acts had resorted to kidnapping of persons.

He said that the police recently arrested a kingpin of kidnappers in the state and arms were recovered from the suspects.

“We have put in place as part of our statutory function, security measure to put an end to the menace once and for all,’’ he said.

In another development, El-Rufa’i has said the state government will launch a tree planting campaign as a measure to secure the environment.

El-Rufa’i said the state government had concluded plans through the Ministry of Environment to engage women throughout the Local Government Areas in the state.

“The aim of this initiative is to safeguard our environment for the generation yet unborn,’’ he said.

He assured the people that plans have been concluded to construct 255 new health facilities throughout the state to guarantee the health of the people.

“We are concerned about reducing maternal mortality rate, especially among pregnant women,’’ he said.

On agriculture, the governor assured that fertilisers would be made available to farmers to boost farm produce.

“We want to ensure that our farmers compete favourably with modern agricultural practices.

He said the Kachia Ginger Company would be opened for bidding for interested investors to revive its production.

El-Rufa’i urged the people to be patient, and assured that electricity, provision of drinking water, accessible roads and payment of salaries and wages among others would be addressed.

NAN reports that the meeting had in attendance, government officials, including, commissioners, permanent secretaries, local council chairmen, traditional rulers, youths and women groups, among others.

  • Kidnapping worsens Kaduna violence

    Kidnapping worsens Kaduna violence

Abduction for rituals has crept into Kaduna State, which was hitherto ravaged only by cattle rustlers, robbers, sectarian strife and Boko Haram insurgency. ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE writes

Once upon a time, Kaduna State made the wrong headlines but only for robbery attacks, cow theft, ethno-religious violence and lately Boko Haram attacks. Now, add kidnapping to the list. The toll on the capital of Northern Nigeria is heavy.

Before mid 2015, the state was always in the news for several attacks on villages, leading to death of many, especially in the southern parts. In the central areas, armed robbery and cattle rustling, particularly in Birnin Gwari axis, were the order of the day.

The Nasir el-Rufai administration swung into action. It halted organised crime in the south, kept cow rustlers quiet in the central areas, and celebrated its achievement. But just then, kidnappers sprang up, as if to get their share of crime proceeds before it was gone. And it seems they are hitting it big.

Security experts have attributed the rising cases of kidnapping to the crackdown on killings, robbery and cattle rustling. Governor el-Rufai also said recently that criminals were resorting to kidnapping after insurgency, armed robbery and cattle rustling have been defeated.

But unlike other parts of the country where kidnapping began, the crime has turned bloody in Kaduna, sending a chill in the spines of Kaduna residents, especially the rich.

Although, a few kidnap cases were earlier reported, it climaxed with the abduction of three Kaduna pastors in early March, one of whom died in the kidnappers’ den, and the subsequent abduction and killing of an army colonel.

However, unlike the Niger Delta experience, some of the Kaduna kidnap cases were not targeted at getting ransom, but done for ritual purposes. The case of four-year-old Sadiq Usman is an example.

The little Usman’s eyes were plucked out by his abductors for suspected rituals in Zaria. The Nation gathered that the boy was wandering in the neighbourhood of Ban Zazzau when the ritualists abducted him.

According to reports, the suspected ritual murderers soon after kidnapping the boy on his way to the evening Islamic school, took him to an uncompleted building and forcefully removed his eyes.

It was gathered that some residents of the area heard the commotion, but before coming to the boy’s rescue, the hoodlums had fled. He was subsequently treated at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria, but the fact remains that his abductors have left the poor boy blind for the rest of his life.

Unlike the little Usman’s ordeal, three grown-up HEKAN pastors were kidnapped in commando-style by masked gunmen along Kaduna-Abuja Expressway.

The pastors were the President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria, the Reverends Emmanuel Dziggau, Vice President, Iliya Anto and Yakubu Zarma, who were on the church permanent site about 17km away from Kaduna when they were whisked away.

Another pastor, Jubrailu Ibrahim Wobiat, who  escaped the attack by the whiskers recounted the ordeal.

He said, “We went to clear the land to start building our seminary school. We finished work of the day and were about leaving. The Vice President was to take off to Abuja, suddenly we saw men wearing masks armed with AK-47 rifles. They were about six. They blocked the small access road leading to the main road as our President, his Vice and the other clergyman were driving out of the place.

“They ordered them out of their cars, but one of the drivers who was driving  the Vice President escaped and ran back to those of us who were still behind at the site to tell us about what had happened.

“We quickly abandoned our cars and ran into the bush for our dear lives and got to the Express Way to the town. The police later escorted us to pick our cars.

Their abductors later demanded for N100 million ransom. But unfortunately enough, the Vice President, Reverend Iliya Anto, who was just recuperating from a surgery died in the kidnappers’ custody.

Pastor Wobiat told newsmen: “They demanded for N100 million, they also told us that the Vice President is sick and they described a location where we could pick him. But when we went there with the police, we couldn’t see him. Somehow, they were monitoring us.

He said the HEKAN President Reverend Emmanuel Dziggau and Retired Reverend Yakubu Dzarma were freed by their abductors. Reverend Anto was later found dead.

However, it was not clear as to whether a ransom was paid to secure the release of the reverend fathers or not.

Another bloody abduction was that of Colonel Samaila Inusa of the Nigerian Army. The gunmen suspected to be kidnappers whisked away Colonel Inusa in his Mercedes-Benz car around Kamazo, along Kaduna Refinery Road, in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.

  • Kidnapping stifling N’Delta development, says NDDC

Kidnapping stifling N’Delta development, says NDDC

Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Tuesday, lamented the negative effects of kidnapping saying violence against contractors was stifling development of the Niger Delta region.

Acting Managing Director of NDDC, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, was particularly unhappy over the recent killing of two soldiers and an abduction of an expatriate attached to a construction firm, Setraco, in Bayelsa State.

An expatriate, Ramzi Bau Hadir, 53, was kidnapped by gunmen along the Nembe-Ogbia road last week after a gun duel that left two soldiers dead.

Semenitari said the attack could stall the inauguration of the Ogbia-Nembe road, a joint project between NDDC and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

A statement signed by Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seriake Dickson, said the NDDC boss spoke in Government House Yenagoa when she paid a courtesy visit to the governor.

She said the purpose of her visit to Bayelsa was to assess ongoing projects and identify areas of immediate intervention according to needs.

She said the NDDC has awarded 28 regional projects from its inception, out of which two had been inaugurated.

She explained that 658 other projects had also been awarded in the areas of shore protection, repair of roads, sand-filling, construction of jetties and electrification.

She said the abandoned Akenfa bridge project was awarded at the cost of N800 million out of which 50 per cent mobilisation has been paid.

In his remarks, Dickson warned NDDC against being used as platform for servicing political interest.

He also suggested that the NDDC should collaborate with state governments in the region to execute priority projects that would serve as a catalyst for the socio-economic development.

The governor commended the NDDC for the award of contracts in Bayelsa states, but  decried the number of abandoned projects in the state, which he attributed the development to the over-politicization of the activities of the commission.

He said, “No doubt, contracts were awarded for development projects in Bayelsa but they were abandoned after the payment of mobilization fees. So, in Bayelsa State, you have a litany of abandoned projects in every community, which is not fair.

“Beneficiaries of these contracts, who thought that the NDDC was just there as a cash cow for them to enrich their pockets at the expense of the impoverished people, who are in need of development is very unfair.”

Kidnapping: Police declare State of Emergency in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command on Tuesday declared a State of Emergency to stem rising cases of kidnapping in the state.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Zubairu Abubakar, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna, that a special team of anti kidnap squad has been formed to track and dislodge the criminal gangs.

He said the declaration of the state of emergency was on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase.

NAN reports that several people in towns and villages have been kidnapped for ransom by criminals in the last three months across the 23 local government areas of the state.

In some of the recent high profile kidnap cases, a Colonel in the Nigerian Army, Samaila Inusa, was reportedly killed by his abductors hours after he was held on March 25.

Similarly, Rev. Iliya Anthony, vice-president, United Church of Christ in Nigeria, died in the hands of his abductors recently.

The man was kidnapped along with the President of the Church, Rev. Emmanuel Dziggau and Rev. Yakubu Dzarma, who were later released.

A former Executive Director, NNPC, and now a Director in Dangote Group, Mansur Ahmed, also regained his freedom after he was abducted recently in Kaduna.

Abubakar acknowledged the cases and said that the police had made several arrests and commenced prosecution of some of the suspected kidnappers.

According to him, 13 suspects have been charged to court while 15 others are under investigation.

He said the deployment of the new squad was to heighten the search for the criminal gangs and make the state safe from their nefarious activities.

The police spokesman appealed for more support from the general public in the renewed effort to rid the state of criminals.

Kidnapping: IGP directs AIG Zone 7 to relocate to Kaduna

Following the increasing rate of kidnapping and other forms crime in Kaduna State, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has directed the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge Zone 7 AIG Ballah Nasarawa to relocate to Kaduna State.

While in Kaduna, AIG Nasarawa is expected to effectively supervise the security situation in the State.

The IGP also charged the AIG to devise means of stopping the incessant kidnapping as well as other forms of crimes, especially in Jere, Kagarko Local Government Area of the State.

The Police Chief in a statement in Abuja on Monday by the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole also urged the AIG to develop new intelligence gathering and crime-fighting techniques and methodologies to suit the local challenges.

Jonathan visits freed foster father, laments kidnapping

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Wednesday, lamented increasing trend of abductions for ransom across the country particularly in the Niger Delta region.

Jonathan was said to have condemned kidnapping when he visited the home of his freed foster father, Chief Nitabai Inegite, who regained freedom after spending about a month in kidnappers’ den.

It was gathered that the former President paid the visit in the company of some prominent traditional rulers from his Otuoke community in Ogbia Local Government Area.

He reportedly appealed to security agencies to stem the tide by doubling their efforts.

Relieving his ordeals, Inegite, said though he was not maltreated by his abductors, he was happy to be home.

He expressed sadness over the killing of his nephew Samuel Oki by the kidnappers.

He said he appealed to the kidnappers, who stormed his residence on two speedboats, to leave Oki alone.

Inengite who said he was not aware that they later killed his nephew, thanked his sympathisers.

King Lot Ogiasa, Paramount ruler Otuoke, King Lawson the clan head of Ogbia kingdom of chiefs were among the traditional rulers who accompanied the former President.

Inengite who was abducted on February 17, was on Tuesday released from captivity.

  • Bishop laments incessant kidnapping of clerics

The president/founder of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Bishop Francis Wale Oke has condemned incessant kidnapping of clergymen in the country.

Bishop Oke spoke Wednesday when he paid a courtesy visit to new Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji (Aje Ogunguniso 1) at his palace.

Part of his entourage include; Bishop Dapo Ogunsola, Pastor Henry Otoibi, Pastor Sola Ogundeji, Pastor John Fagbemi, Pastor Lekan Akindele and Pastor Bisi Adetifa.

He said: They have turned kidnapping into a business to extort huge money from people. For instance, I read in the Newspaper today that three clergymen in Kaduna were kidnapped and their kidnappers are demanding for N100 million ransom. I appeal that they should be released immediately.

“The nation is degenerating to the extent that people no longer fear God. The other time it was a bishop of the African Church in Lagos that was kidnapped; now they kidnap school pupils.”

According to him, In the Bible death penalty was recommended for kidnapping and with the way things are going now, it will be better if the government adopt this method.

Bishop Oke said government at all level must rise up to the occasion and tackle this menace by making kidnapping a capital offence, adding that:” if you kidnap anybody and you are caught, then you are gone.”

On the reason for his visit, the clerics said he was in the palace to congratulate the Olubadan and to pray for longitivity and sound health for him.

In his remark, Oba Adetunji thanked Bishop Oke for his visit, appealing to him to join him in prayer for the creation of Ibadan State and upgrading of Ibadan airport to an international standard.

  • Kidnapping, Plc.

    Kidnapping, Plc.

My freedom can and should therefore not be taken away from me by anyone just because he is unemployed, greedy for great gain, aggrieved, poor, or just plain wants to marry me

Today, my blood is boiling. I am therefore boiling mad because my family and town were threatened by the activities of kidnappers. But, I get ahead of myself.

This morning, I received this message on my phone and I am taking the liberty to reproduce it for you here. As usual, I have tinkered with the spellings and all to make it readable.

Please pay attention; something is happening in Abuja and Lagos now. People dressed like policemen stop cars and ask for particulars. Please on no condition should you let them in your car, they are kidnappers. Once they enter, they tell the driver that they are going to the police station. They end up taking the person elsewhere and ask the person to call someone to come and bail them with a ransom. It just happened to two people this morning. Also be cautious when taking cabs at night…

Just a few weeks ago, we wrote on this subject of kidnapping on this column and since then this dastardly trade has expanded. Obviously, very little has been done about it; this is why it is now operating like a fully established and registered company would – in the open. I am not giving up; I will continue to write about this in the hope that others will join me to shout about it until the police wake up and do something, if only to clear their name from the stink.

Often, I muse to myself that each regime we have had in this democratic leg has left something distasteful for us to swallow in this nation. Pa Olusegun Obasanjo’s era left us the Okada commercial motorcycle to strain at, and it has been a very hard swallow for us all since then. At that time, Obasanjo as the president really needed something to show he had the people in mind all the while.

The problem then was that the electricity situation was dismal indeed and people were watching each other dozing over their tools in their shops – carpentering, vulcanizing, pepper milling shops, etc., — and also cursing their situation. Unfortunately, rather than give us good train services, the then presido chose to liberalise transportation ‘so that many people would be employed’. I think I heard someone mutter something like it was cheaper for him. Anyway, that is how it came about that those Okada people have perpetually been getting between our feet, or err… tyres.

Then the era of ex-presidents Yar’Adua and Jonathan came. The Yar’Adua years were too brief for him to have left something for us to get stuck on but the President Jonathan era was too full of glitz and glamour not to have left something in our throats. In that era, electricity was still scarce; people were however no longer staying to doze in their shops. They had their Okada business to fill the roads with like termites.

With so much money flying around (dollars, pounds, and sometimes Naira) in the Jonathan years, it was too much to ask some of us not to think up ways of catching some of it. It came down to a choice between begging Jonathan to allow them join in the spraying circle and taking to kidnapping. With hindsight now, methinks it would have been cheaper to have begged, but I thought I heard someone mutter again that the circle was too small. Today, the unfortunate effect of the Jonathan glitz and glamour has metamorphosed into Kidnapping, PLC.

Kidnapping is now a business for many, complete with veterans. People don’t even think twice about just getting up and depriving others of their liberty, not minding that this is a highly criminal offence comparable to murder. All too often, the kidnapping leads to murder but the state is not making as if it cares. Many families are grieving over this issue but the state is too silent for my liking. I can bet you that right now, many families are running around looking for money to ransom a family member from kidnappers. AND THE STATE IS SILENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last week, my family (and my town, never mind where it is), was thrown into that anguished running around over the kidnapping of not one but three citizens of the town, including my family member and everyone felt so helpless. They had been travelling along a Nigerian route between Edo and Kogi States. What astonished and frightened me most was the information that the kidnappers could not turn up at first at the agreed point to collect the ransom they demanded because they were busy trailing the relatives of another victim they had just ‘taken’ and from whom they hoped to get more money. Can you just imagine this?!

What the deuce is going on? Is this a country or what? How is it that the mother or father (I cannot recall which one now) of a serving minister is kidnapped and the country cannot rise up against that crime to stamp it out once and for all? How can a former minister be kidnapped and the state get him released, then become somnambulant over the crime?!!! I don’t get it! It is definitely not enough for the police to suddenly swing into action in the case of a kidnapped known figure and leave the remaining families in this land of 170 million people to their own fate. This is not fair. Someone said Nigeria is now officially a failed state; that is why this kind of thing can go on. I find myself agreeing reluctantly.

Now, it has got that people are using kidnapping to solve their problems. To solve unemployment problems, turn to kidnapping; it requires no capital or credentials. Can’t get a girl to marry? Kidnap one, a la the story of Ese. Soon, everyone will be kidnapping everyone else in this country till you become either a kidnapper or a kidnapped. Indeed, before you know it, wives will be kidnapping husbands until those ones release sufficient housekeeping funds. I tell you, this is no laughing matter.

There’s a theory that says the police are heavily complacent over this matter because many of them are involved. Don’t ask me how, I don’t know. I don’t even know how sound that theory is. All I know is that the police have not done much to get to the root of this problem. They are not giving me sufficient confidence that when I go on the road, I will not be kidnapped along the way; and when I sit in my house, no one will enter and ask me to come and be kidnapped. Seriously!

My freedom is already guaranteed in the Nigerian Constitution, like many other constitutions. It tells me that it is my inalienable right as a citizen of this country. This means that it recognises that I am a human being not a goat or a chicken that has no will but only that of the person who pays for it or steals it. The constitution is thus acknowledging that I cannot be stolen away by some philistine for any reason. My freedom can and should therefore not be taken away from me by anyone just because he is unemployed, greedy for great gain, aggrieved, poor, or just plain wants to marry me.

Most importantly, we citizens should insist that the police, National Assembly and Presidency beam their search lights on some hot kidnapping spots. For instance, in many recent kidnappings, Okene in Kogi State seems to have featured prominently. Remember a justice, a trade unionist, and many others have been taken while travelling through and around the town in recent times; so were my family member and townsmen. Right now, there is a part of Kogi State being terrorised by kidnappers. Someone should give us some answers soon.
