  • Robbers kill policeman in Ekiti

    A man identified to be a policeman was yesterday shot dead in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, while trailing robbers who had attacked a business premises.

    The Nation gathered that the hoodlums had robbed a petrol station on Fajuyi-Secretariat Road and were escaping through the old Iyin-Ilawe Road when the police officer in a white Hilux van sighted them and gave them a hot chase.

    An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the police van trailed the robbers to NTA junction, where they were said to have waited and blocked the way in readiness for a gun duel.

    “When the police van chased them to that point, the robbers used their vehicle to block the way and rained bullets on the car.

    “The bullets hit the driver of the vehicle and he died on the spot, after which the robbers entered their car and sped off,” he said.

    Police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu said: “The attack on the police officer could have been a reaction of criminals to the cleansing operation being carried out by the command.

    “You know that since our new police commissioner, Mr. Asuquo Amba, came on board, he has set up a Joint Task Force to carry out Operation Make Ekiti Safe, and many criminals have either been arrested or killed.”

  • Gunmen kill policeman in Edo

    Gunmen have kidnapped the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly candidate for Owan West Constituency in Edo State, Michael Ohio-Ezomo.

    He was abducted yesterday at his home in Eme-Ora village.

    The kidnappers killed his police orderly.

    Ohio-Ezomo was a member of the assembly between 2011 and 2015.

    The Chairman of Owan West Local Government, Mr. Frank Ilaboya, who confirmed the incident, said it happened around 1am.

    “We got the information early this morning. His police orderly was killed. They shot him.     “The driver said they shattered the window with bullets and entered the room, kidnapping him.

    “We don’t know his whereabouts. He went on campaign yesterday. He went to some camps with Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, the House of Representatives candidate and we even spoke after the campaign. They were supposed to continue the campaign today, but for this unfortunate incident.”

    Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu, who mobilised a special squad to the area, said it was a case of kidnap and murder.

    He said: “They broke into the compound and first went to the boys’ quarters where the police orderly was sleeping and killed him. Then they went to the four- bedroom bungalow where the victim stayed and broke the window to gain entrance. Three of them went inside the house, while the others stayed outside the building. One of those who went inside wore a hood and hand gloves, which means there is an insider that is likely to know the terrain and don’t want to be identified.

    “We have started investigation. They went away with the victim’s phones. We have ordered for the embalmment of the body of our fallen man so that we will do the necessary processes before we inform the family.”

     

  • Gunmen kill policeman in Delta

    Gunmen have killed a police officer during a shooting at a police checkpoint in Asaba, Delta State.

    The Nation gathered that the policemen were on stop and search duty.

    It was learnt that the gunmen stole two rifles and a pistol belonging to the policemen.

    The Nation gathered that other policemen sustained injuries.

    An eyewitness said there were sporadic shootings during the attack.

    Police Commissioner Mustafa Muhammadu confirmed the attack.

    He said: “The incident occurred between 7pm and 8 pm. A policeman died during the attack. The gunmen carted away two rifles and a pistol. We are investigating the attack. I assure you that we will get to the root of the matter.”

     

  • Bandits kill policeman, five others in Zamfara

    No fewer than six persons including a police corporal were killed on Friday by bandits at Gurbin Bore village, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    It quoted the   Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state,   Mohammed Shehu, as saying the bandits numbering about 100 attacked the community at about 10 pm on Friday.

    He said three other persons were severely wounded and had been taken to hospital where they were receiving treatment.

    “Eleven vehicles including a police vehicle, three motorcycles and five kiosks were set ablaze by the hoodlums,” he said.

    The command spokesman said the bandits who were suspected to have come from Dumburum forest were engaged by a combined team of counter terrorists, comprising police Mobile Force, Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) personnel stationed in the area, which repelled the criminals.

    He said however that the footpath of the bandits were being trailed in the bushes and assured that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.

    Also speaking  on the matter, the Vice Chairman of Zurmi Local Government Council, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran, said a total of 13 shops were burnt while 15 vehicles were set ablaze.

    An eye witness and a resident, Mr Manir Salihu, said his family had always been threatened by the bandits including two attempts to set his house on fire while members of the family were inside.

     

  • Gunmen kill policeman in Ogun

    The Assistant Head of the Anti-robbery Squad in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Mr. Tosin Oyekan, has been killed by gunmen.

    It is not clear if the gunmen are robbers or cultists.

    A source, who pleaded for anonymity, said Oyekan was killed at his home yesterday during a gun battle with robbers in Irewon, Ijebu-Ode.

    He said the area was no longer safe, adding that three people were killed recently.

    The victims include a student of the Tai Solarin University of Education, simply identified as Olawunmi; a secondary school teacher and a business man.

    Police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi said the command was investigating the killing.

    He said it was not clear whether the gunmen were robbers or cultists.

    Adejobi said 11 suspected cultists were arrested yesterday in Ijebu-Igbo, adding that two guns and some charms were recovered from them.
