Owoseni, who addressed reporters in Makurdi, said the herdsmen attacked Olegobiudu in Agatu, killed three and rendered thousands homeless.

Owoseni confirmed that two persons were killed on Sunday in a renewed attack on Agatu by suspected herdsmen. Two others were killed in Tse Semaka, Guma and one person in Makurdi.

He said the Agatu situation was controlled through  community policing and intelligence gathering.

Governor Samuel Ortom, who lamented the situation, urged security agencies to improve on their surveillance and be proactive to curtail the killings.

The governor also said the people were being killed because they chose to follow due process in the regulation of livestock business.

He spoke yesterday when the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative to Nigeria, Antonio Tose Canhandula, visited him at the Benue Peoples House.

The governor reiterated that ranching law remain the only solution to farmers and herdsmen crisis.

He said it was practised in African countries and should be done in Nigeria too.

Ortom acknowledged the efforts of security agents in containing the crisis, but said more should be done to bring back displaced persons.

He thanked the UNCHR for its support to IDPs, through donations.

Canhandula, who was accompanied by the Regional Representative in West Africa, Liz Ahua, commiserated with the government and people on the killings.

He said their visit was to donate relief materials to Cameroonian refugees in Kwande, adding that they could not do so without identifying with the governor and providing relief to displaced persons.

Items donated include buckets, sleeping mats, toilet soap, blankets, solar lanterns, cooking pots, jerry cans and insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

Gunmen kill driver in Akwa Ibom

    •Passengers robbed

Suspected cultists yesterday killed a commercial bus driver at Edem Akai axis of Iwukem-Etim Ekpo-Abak highway in Akwa Ibom State.

The hoodlums, said to be members of Iceland cult, set ablaze the vehicle, which belonged to Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC).

They robbed passengers. Eight escaped with bullet wounds.

It was learnt that the cultists, who blocked the road, rained bullets on the bus.

An eyewitness said: “The hoodlums blocked the road and robbed people. The AKTC bus ran into them, but tried to escape. About six cultists shot at it.

“The bullets ignited fire, which burnt down the bus. When I heard gunshots, I escaped into Edem Akai Primary School with my motorcycle and watched the incident from there.

“After robbing the passengers, the cultists snatched a Toyota Camry car and escaped with it.

“They took the untarred road through Udianga Enem to their hideout at Okoyo village. Others followed the stolen car on their motorcycles.

The hoodlums robbed nearby shops. Policemen, who usually block Ikot Nya section of the highway, escaped in their van.”

  • Gunmen kill two policemen in Bayelsa

Gunmen kill two policemen in Bayelsa

Guns boomed yesterday at Ogbia waterside, Bayelsa State, following an attack on a police marine base by suspected pirates.

Two policemen attached to the base were reportedly killed.

The gunmen stole two rifles and a 200-horsepower engine belonging to the Ogbia Local Government Area.

Leader of the marine team, an assistant superintendent of Police (ASP), was said to have sustained injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

It was gathered that the bandits fled with their casualties after the incident, which occurred at 2 am.

A police source, who spoke in confidence, described the exchange of gunfire as massive, adding that a G3 magazine, with 17-live ammunition was recovered from the hoodlums.

“Eighteen expended ammunition was picked on the scene. The hoodlums came to steal the General Multipurpose Gun. It is a big gun mounted on a boat. But the policemen protected it with their lives”, he said.

Commissioner of Police Asuquo Amba said the police were combing the creeks to locate the criminals.

Describing how the attack was carried out, he said: “About 2 am, some unknown suspected sea pirates that came in with two boats from different directions attacked our men that were anchored at marine base at Ogbia and obviously there was a lot of exchange of fire.

“We tried to be as defensive as possible. In the cause of that we lost two policemen who were shot in action and they were able to make away with two of our riffles and a 200-horsepower engine belonging to the Ogbia Local Government Area.

“We were able to recover a G3 magazine, which was used by them with 17-live ammunition and 18-expended ammunition. The firing was not from one direction. It was through separate direction.

“Prior to this time, we had secured our GMP gun which I think was one of the main thing they were looking for. So, they could not steal it and that was why we lost two police officers in action and the officer that led the team, an ASP was equally injured.”

Amba said the police had been able to curtail activities of sea pirates but explained that reports showed a resurgence.

The police boss said he visited the scene with other senior officers, promising that they will fish out the killers.

He said: “For a while we have been able to curtail but it is really rearing its head again. We have appealed to our sister agencies to help. We are all out to ensure that these pirates are checked.

“We have intelligence report that they are trying to increase their activities to sabotage the efforts of the government to secure the highway. This is a recent development and it has given us a cause to sit up. We will restrategise and secure our base and the water areas.

“We have spread our dragnets. We have informed other security agencies and all efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects”.

  • Imo masqueraders kill two in vengeance

Imo masqueraders kill two in vengeance

    •Octogenarian died, son injured

Two persons were killed when aggrieved members of a cult in Umutogume, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, invaded the village to avenge their colleague, who died during a festival at the weekend.

Many were injured by the hoodlums, who were allegedly armed with AK 47 and other dangerous weapons.

Among the victims were an octogenarian, Priscilla Chije, and her 44-year-old son, Onyeka Chije, who died instantly.

A cameraman was shot in the head. He later died. Chidel Chije, a cousin to Onyeka,  was left with a severe wound. Others were also hit by stray bullets.

It was gathered that a masquerader, known as Udebube, from Abatu village,  collapsed and died on the spot, fuelling suspicion that he was killed by the charm of the host masquerade.

Sources said members of the deceased’s team went back to their village, and allegedly brought gunmen to attack the village two days later.

Narrating the incident, the son to the injured octogenarian, Mr. Samuel Chije, said the gunmen, accompanied by members of the masquerade (Mmanwu) cult from Abatu stormed their village and killed two people.

According to him, “the masquerader from Abatu village collapsed and died while performing during the festival and the members claimed he was killed by our village masquerade with voodoo. So, when we sensed what was going to happen, our village masquerade did not come out to dance on the day of the attack.  They went and hired gunmen with AK 47 and stormed our village and started shooting, killing two persons, including my jounger brother, Onyeka Chije and injuring my mother, Pricilla Chije”.

“My brother was at his place of work when he heard that our mother was hit by stray bullet; he rushed home. When he got there, the gunmen, who had retreated to reinforce, saw him and shot him; he was riddled with bullets. My cousin, Chidel Chije, sustained gunshot wounds and is in critical condition in a hospital.

“A cameraman, shot in the head, died instantly, while others were injured. But we know the gunmen because we have the video clips. They were accompanied by some prominent men from Abatu village. We suffered more because our house was by the road”.

Another indigene of Umutogume, said: “I know the dead masquerader . He is not in the best of health, he may have died from heart attack as he is almost obese but the members of the masquerade cult from the other village believed he was killed with voodoo and came for revenge. They were armed with sophisticated weapons. It was like a theatre of war. I have never seen anything like that in my life”.

Commissioner of Police Chris Ezike, said: “We have made some arrests and investigation is on. We have also met with the traditional ruler  and other stakeholders. We also deployed policemen to the communities to avoid reprisal attacks”.

  • I want police to kill my father’s killer, says daughter

I want police to kill my father’s killer, says daughter

A Nine-year-old girl Abigail Olayiwola, has urged security agents to execute the man who killed her father on the New Year’s Day.

Abigail’s dad, Stephen Olayiwola, a driver, was stabbed to death, with a broken bottle by his friend and a co-tenant, Mr Ibrahim Adetunji, during a quarrel in his 66, Lafunke Street, Ijegun, outskirts of Lagos home.

The Nation gathered that a quarrel broke out between the two friends when the victim was brokering peace between Adetunji’s wife and other tenants.

Adetunji was said to have got angry with the way  Olayiwola was addressing his wife when mediating in the dispute.

An eyewitness said the incident happened at about noon.

A neighbour, Mr Sharafa Ogunbisi, said  Stephen was first treated at a nearby hospital from where he was referred to the State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja due to excessive bleeding.

Ogunbisi said Stephen died on the way to the hospital and his body was deposited at the Isolo General Hospital mortuary.

Adetunji has been detained at Isheri-Oshun police station.

When The Nation visited the home of the deceased, Olayiwola’s widow, Abidemi, a tailor, was just returning from a holiday trip to Ekiti State with her three children.

Mrs Olayiwola and Abigail were weeping.

The widow thereafter was quiet, talking to no one.

Family members, friends and neighbours came to condole with the family.

Abigail said: “I want the government or the police to kill the person that killed my daddy; he must not go free. I also want the government to do for me all that my father would have done for me if he was still alive.”

She described her father as “nice, caring and lover of children.”

“My daddy has always been responsible for our feeding, accommodation and education among others. He was a responsible man. He was a gentle man and he would never fight with any one; he would play and carry all the children that come around him.

“I would miss my daddy for everything. He is the one that is taking care of me, my mother and my younger ones; he pays our school fees and takes good care of us,” she said.

Ogunbisi said Adetunji’s wife, fondly called ‘Iya Fathia’ fights with everybody in the compound.

Ogunbisi narrated how the incident occurred: “On January 1, Olayiwola told Iya Fathia not to greet him again because she always fights with everyone. Iya Fathia held Olayiwola but he pushed her back and she fell. When Adetunji got back, his wife told him that Olayiwola beat her and it led to another quarrel.  Adetunji  later went to the police station to report. Though, Olayiwola did not beat her. All of us in the compound and other neighbours outside the compound came out and settled the quarrel. Olayiwola and about five of other men prostrated and the whole matter ended, even Adetunji said everything was over and we all went back to our apartments.

“The next thing we learnt was that Olayiwola was sleeping by the front of his apartment when an elderly woman called Iya Adura told him that he assaulted a husband and wife, Olayiwola said he did not. Adetunji met them there; Olayiwola pushed him away that they should let him continue his sleep. The next thing was that Adetunji took a broken bottle and stabbed Olayiwola. Olayiwola ran out of the compound, Adetunji chased him and said he would kill him. While Olayiwola was on the motorcycle rushing to the hospital because he was bleeding, Adetunji was pulling him by the trouser. Adetunji did not allow anyone to come in between them; he was ready to stab anyone who tried to save Olayiwola from him.”

Ogunbisi explained that Adetunji and Olayiwola were good friends in the compound and even if Adetunji wanted to kill anyone, nobody would have though it would be Olayiwola, because of their closeness, adding: “They had never fought before; it is only Adetunji’s wife that is quarrelsome. There is no day she will not fight somebody; she would curse everybody, she has no job. Adetunji is an Okada rider and he is also a marketer with a wine firm. He is from Oyo State. They have three children and their last child clocked a year the day the incident happened. They moved into this compound about a year ago. Before they moved into this compound, there was peace here, no one ever fought with anyone, and we were always playing with one another.

“After the incident, we discovered that Adetunji had been a long time criminal, killing several people and had been to Kirikiri Prison three times. He had at one of the times spent three years in Kirikiri Prison. That was the first time we heard such about him, because he does not talk to anyone in this compound except Olayiwola. We learnt he had committed several offence before, and his coming here to rent an apartment was a hideout, which none of us was aware of. Even when we got to the police station, some of the police officers identified him as a criminal, saying he has been hiding in our apartment all the while. The police came here on Tuesday January 2) to search his house. ”

A neighbour who pleaded not to be named said many people identified Adetunji as a criminal but neighbours never knew that side of him.

She said Adetunji does not drink but he carries charms, saying that must have led him to do what he did.

“When the police came here on Tuesday, they found a living lizard, tied with three pieces of cloth moving round his room, they also found something like a black calabash with a stone inside.

“When Adetunji stabbed Olayiwola, residents put him on the bike, this man was pulling him by the waist, saying he must die. His daughter was in between them, telling his father not to kill the man but he did not listen.  His wife was also there at the scene. While all of these were ongoing, Iya Adura, who instigated Adetunji to kill Olayiwola, told him not to allow Olayiwola to go free, else he will suffer for it. She said it loud on the street and everybody was surprised. Adetunji’s wife is a bad person, even the husband looks like a hired killer.

“The wife did not show any remorse seeing her husband killing someone neither did she feel any how when the news spread that Olayiwola was dead. She only called someone on the phone and said it had happened again, that her husband had killed someone. It is obvious that they are doing charms because we noticed that the man was always wearing one ring that has turned into black.

“There has never been robbery in this compound until when the Adetunjis  joined us.  His wife will always fight everyone in this compound every week. She instigates her husband to do evil,” she said.

  • I didn’t kill my neighbour, defendant tells court

I didn’t kill my neighbour, defendant tells court

A 31-year-old man, Ibrahim Tijani, who allegedly macheted his neighbour, Bashorun Okanlawon, to death,  has denied the allegation.

Under cross examination yesterday by Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice Mr Adeniji Kazeem, Tijani said though he had a fight with Okanlawon, he did not kill him.

Tijani is facing a one-count charge of murder, which is  punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The defendant, who lives in an uncompleted building with the deceased, at Okun in Ajah ,  Lagos, pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned on  January 21, 2016.

He told Justice Adedayo Akintoye that on the fateful day, the deceased poked his eye with a stick and it became red. He claimed that he was also injured in the stomach.

The defendant said the deceased never complained about fume from his generator, which was the cause of their January 21, 2016 fight.

He said before the fight he never had any disagreement with the deceased.

Tijani claimed that the deceased had also finished a bottle of dry gin and taken Indian hemp before the fight.

The defendant said the cutlass he wielded only fell on the deceased’s foot, stating : “I did not kill anyone, I was surprised when they said he died.’’

When the prosecutor asked him if he was in court the day the pathologist testified that the deceased died of a deep cut, Tijani said he did not understand  the English that the doctor spoke.

Justice Akintoye adjourned  to January 11, 2018.

On October 24, the deceased’s son, Adeola Okanlawon, told the court how the defendant killed his father with a cutlass.

Adeola, the first prosecution witness, said Tijani killed his father following their  disagreement over  fume coming from the defendant’s generator.

According to Adeola, his father asked the defendant to change the generator’s position  to stop the fume from entering his room, but the defendant refused to do so.

“Disagreement between my father and our neighbour over fume coming out from the neighbour’s generator set, caused the death of my father. My father had to push the generator away from its former position, but did not throw it away.

“The defendant fought with my father which led to his death.

“When the defendant was cutting my father with cutlass, I pleaded with him not to kill my father, but he refused to listen to me,” Adeola said.

  • Robbers kill bus driver

    Robbers kill bus driver

One-chance robbers have killed a commercial bus operator at Rainbow Bus Stop on Oshodi-Apapa expressway near Mile 2, Lagos.

The driver was shot on November 19 while trying to retrieve his bus from the robbers.

He was rushed to the hospital by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives, who chased the robbers and retrieved the bus.

The driver died on Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Another victim of the robbery incident, Liberty Whitney, 20, from Warri, Delta State, had her valuables recovered from the robbers by the RRS.

Whitney, an International Relations graduate from Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State capital, was coming from the school around 9.30pm.

She boarded the unpainted bus from Oshodi to Mile 2.

According to her, more passengers joined the bus. On getting to Rainbow Bus Stop, two men boarded the bus and that was when pandemonium struck.

She said: “The two men in white native attires pointed guns at us, telling us to remain calm and do as we were told. Other passengers were screaming and jumping down from the bus, I was held by a man  that  joined the bus at Cele Bus Stop unknowing to us that he was a member of the gang, he pulled me back.

“As I made another attempt to jump down, one of three robbers brandished a gun in my face with threat of shooting if I didn’t comply. One of them asked me for my phone, bag and money and when I was reluctant, he hit me with the gun butt. I couldn’t breathe well for some minutes. I handed over all I had with me instantly, my travelling bag, polythene bag, laptop, phone, chargers and school certificates. Afterward, I was allowed to jump down from the vehicle. Some minutes later, I heard a gunshot; then man was thrown off the bus. He had been shot. He hung on the back of the bus. I don’t know why he did that; it was at this point that RRS men chased the vehicle with bikes. The robbers shot several times in the air but the policemen went after them.

“The robbers on getting to Mile 2 abandoned the bus. I followed the bus and the police at a reasonable distance on a bike until the robbers stopped and ran away. I was able to get my valuables and documents back except for my phone that the robbers took with them.

“I later realised that the man shot and clung to the back of the bus was the driver. He was fighting for his bus which, I learnt, was his only source of livelihood.”

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Superintendent (SP) advised that people should not drag valuables with robbers especially when they are armed.

The case, Oti said, has been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland.

  • How internet could kill business

    How internet could kill business

Internet may kill some businesses, even if they reside on the web. The year was 2001 when Marketing Strategist, Michael E. Porter wrote in Harvard Business Review that internet will jeopardise competitive advantage. Fast-forward to 2016 when almost everybody is on the internet, everybody on the internet claim to be a professional, facebook is seen to be more efficient than billboards and twitter breaks news faster than cable-based televisions.

The internet has brought a bank of data nearer to companies than researches have ever done. Companies may now be victims of extreme competition, as all information about them, their strategies, product portfolio and clients can be gleaned from the internet. It is easy for competing companies to copy each other and whatever Unique Service Proposition (USP) means is sunk in competitive convergence. Therefore, the need for digital capabilities emerged as the trends change faster. Only companies that are fast developing new capabilities will survive.

Perhaps the worst harm the internet is doing to the business landscape is the opportunity given to everybody to be whoever  he/she wants to be on the web. Amateurs can launch a website, which is even more competitive in contents than the websites of professionals. Online content has superimposed the need for value and structures; social media savoir-faire is the new professionalism; and copied pictures and false testimonials seem more adequately credible.
