    Police kill Ekiti ‘robbery kingpin’

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ekiti State yesterday   killed a “robbery kingpin”, Gbenga Matthew, popularly called Orimeji Omo Bose.

Orimeji was killed at 3 am in a gun duel between his five-man gang and the SARS team at Akodi-Edemo in Odo Ado.

His body, which was tattooed with his nickname and other signs, was paraded at the police headquarters before being taken to the mortuary.

Command’s spokesman Alberto Adeyemi addressed a news briefing on the development at 7 am.

The deceased has been terrorising Ado-Ekiti and environs for over 12 years and was believed to be the mastermind of many robberies.

Orimeji was arrested several times in the past and charged to court. He was among those that escaped  from the Ado-Ekiti prisons on November 30.

Acting on a tip-off, the police swooped on the area a few minutes after being informed of a robbery operation.

Orimeji and his gang was operating in the neighbourhood when the SARS men arrived. A gun duel ensued affter the gang fired at the police.

Adeyemi described the killing as a “breakthrough”, urging the public to cooperate with the command by giving information leading to the arrest of criminals.

He said: “Early yesterday morning, the officer in charge of SARS got a tip-off that robbers were operating in Akodi Edemo. The team got to the area and met a gang of five in operation. The robbers opened fire on the SARS team, which arrested them alive.

“Two SARS officials were injured in the gun battle. Orimeji jumped down from the house and was trying to reload his rifle; it was at that point our men were left with no choice but to shoot him.

“The other members of the gang escaped with injuries. We are appealing to the public and hospitals not to treat anyone with bullet wounds; they should instead call the nearest police station.

“Leader of the gang, Gbenga Matthew, alias Orimeji, was a notorious robber with a 12-year track record.

“We have arrested him on several occasions and charged him to court. He was among those that escaped in the last prison break in Ekiti.

“We understand that Ekiti has three robbery gangs. We have smashed one by killing  Orimeji. We are intensifying efforts to get the other two.

“About N120,000 and $3 were recovered from him. His rifle, a locally-made one, is also there with him”.

  • Gunmen kill three policemen, others in bank raid

Gunmen kill three policemen, others in bank raid

It was like a movie scene. Gun-totting robbers dressed in military camouflage invaded yesterday a First City Monument Bank (FCMB) branch in Lekki, Lagos, shooting sporadically.

Customers, motorists and road side vendors scampered for safety.

The robbers trained their guns on a police van parked beside the bank.

The policemen fought back, but three of them were killed.

Police spokesman, Ken Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed casualty figure, but eyewitness said no fewer than eight persons, including the policemen, and a banker were killed.

Many motorists abandoned their vehicles on the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge for dear life during the gun battle between the police and the robbers around 5pm.

The robbers were said to have entered the bank, held customers hostage and carted away a large sum of money.

Eye witnesses said on their twitter handles that the gunmen came prepared and overwhelmed the police.

One Akintayo Disa (Teeboy), who posted pictures of the robbers allegedly taken through his Hi Resolution Canon EOS 1100D, claimed that they escaped through the waterways.

He said the gunmen left after shooting sporadically for over 10 minutes and holding people hostage

“The armed men, he added, shot someone around the waterfront.

He said: “It appeared somebody got ‘whacked’. Crowd gathered around the waterfront. “The guys came prepared.  Car to car assassination taking place at Lekki 1, Road 14 Junction.”

An eyewitness, told our correspondent on the phone that the robbers raided a bank at Lekki Phase 1 and attempted to escape through the link bridge to Ikoyi when they encountered policemen.

Another witness, Ijeoma Okolie whose office is a few metres from the bank, said more than three people were killed.

She said the robbers escaped in a speed boat after the bank operation.

“It happened around 4:50pm or 4:55pm. We have closed for the day but we wasted about three minutes before leaving. It was while we were still waiting that we started hearing gunshots. So, we did not leave again.

“It was terrible. The armed robbers were just shooting anyhow. They killed three policemen and one other person. They took their time and it seems they have studied the area very well because they just jumped into a boat and left.

“The attack caused serious traffic on the road because most people abandoned their vehicles and ran for safety. So, for the robbers to have left through the water, it means they planned their movement thoroughly, “she said.

One Oludayo said about four policemen and three civilians were killed by the robbers whose number he gave as 12.

The civilian casualty, he said, included a member of staff of the bank, a nearby fish seller and a passerby.

One Rose-Mary Motunrayo, who said she passed through the road more than an hour after the incident, described it as “really bad”, adding: “May God continue to help us.”

But FCMB’s spokesperson, Louis Ibe said he was not aware of any attack when The Nation contacted him on telephone.

Nwosu said the robbers sustained gunshot wounds, appealing to the public to report anyone with such injuries.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, had visited the scene, adding that investigations are on.

  • Troops kill 70 Boko Haram insurgents

At least 70 members of the Boko Haram sect have been killed by Nigerian troops and civilian vigilance groups.

The killings occurred as the Army foiled the plan of a would-be suicide bomber to attack Konduga, near Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, witnesses told AFP.

Soldiers engaged in a six-hour battle with 150 fighters, who had entered Konduga, disguised as cattle herders.

“At the last count, 73 Boko Haram insurgents were killed in the foiled attack,” a civilian vigilance group member, Butari Mala, said.

“Among those killed was a suicide bomber, who was shot inside his car loaded with explosives before he could reach his target.

“The rest fled into the bush, but were pursued and bombarded by a fighter jet deployed from Maiduguri.”

A military source in Maiduguri, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed Mala’s account, including the death toll.

Another resident said: “Unknown to the Boko Haram gunmen, herdsmen in Konduga had been asked to keep away from some designated no-go areas.

“So when the gunmen came in through these designated areas, it was clear to soldiers they were not genuine herdsmen and they met the soldiers waiting for them.”

Boko Haram’s planned attack was foiled weeks after the Army announced that the fight against the insurgents was almost over.

The announcement followed the government’s decision to delay elections amid security concerns.

Last month, African Union troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin were deployed to halt the insurgence.

At the beginning of this month, Boko Haram released a video showing the interrogation and beheading of two Nigerians, described as police informers. The video spread fears that the group is merging with Islamic State (Isis) insurgents, who are renowned for releasing footage of fighters decapitating hostages.

  • Uniformed men kill two, injure others

Uniformed men kill two, injure others

    …Killers were robbers, says GOC

Some uniformed men have shot dead two persons and injured three others in Lagos.

The incident occurred between 9.15pm and 9.45pm last Wednesday at Majidun near Ikorodu, Lagos.

Two of the victims, who are in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASAUTH) in Ikeja, said the gunmen were in military uniform.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division in Lagos Maj. Gen. Tanmi Dibi, told The Nation yesterday that the gunmen were not soldiers.

He said: “There is no way such thing would happen and I will not know. Moreso, I have just inquired now and they told me none of our men was involved in that act.”

Alhaji Aminu Salis, an engineer and his wife, Toyibah, who were alone in their car, said they were flagged down at Majidun Bus stop, and before they knew what was happening, one of the men opened fire on them.

About five bullets pierced through his arm and legs, his wife was hit on her left leg.

Their car was also riddled with bullets.

Three other vehicles coming behind them were attacked.

Two of the victims have died; others are in hospitals.

Salis described the incident as traumatic.

“We saw two men; one dressed in military uniform, another in mufti, checking vehicles. From a distance, we could see them flagging down motorists, looking into their cars and allowing them to move on. This led to traffic snarl around Majidun Bus stop. On getting to them, the one holding a gun asked me to come down, I thought they were on a routine check, as I opened the door, placed one leg on the floor, he cocked the gun and opened fire on us. I quickly told my wife awon ole leleyi, awon ole leleyi, (These are thieves, these are thieves); before I could put my leg back into the car, five bullets have hit us; I managed to drive and he pointed the gun at us. After driving past him, he faced back and opened fire at the vehicles behind us. By the time we reached Ogolonto where some Naval officers are stationed, I stopped and they (Naval officers) told me to keep going,” he said.

“I had to come down to inform them of what happened,” Mrs Salis said.

“But they were not ready to listen to us, saying they do not want to have any issue with the military men over there. It was after some drivers and passengers of other vehicles coming behind mounted pressure on them that we have been attacked that they decided to allow us stay there.

“When their boss arrived and was told of the incident, he asked my husband to drive himself to the General Hospital, after all he drove the car up till that point. My husband told him he could no longer continue driving. I had to call some of our friends that left the place not quite long for help,” Mrs Salis, whose left leg was bandaged, said.

Mr Sanni Kabir, an engineer, said he saw the two uniformed men between Itowolo and Majidun shooting sporadically, forcing motorists to slow down for checking.

Kabir said five minutes after passing the gunmen, he got a distress call from Mrs Salis.

“She told me that armed robbers have shot at them; I quickly turned back and met them at the place where the Naval men were stationed. From there, we took them to General Hospital; the medical personnel demanded for police report, I rushed down to the nearest police station where I saw other victims with their vehicles at Ipakodo Police Station. Later on, after first aid, the hospital referred us to LASUTH. We got here (LASUTH) some minutes past 12 in the midnight,” he said.

According to Salis, one of the policemen who saw some of the bullets in my car said they belonged to the military and not the police.

Salis said the incident was first reported at Ipakodo Police Station where they met six other victims. Officers at the station, he said, directed them to Owode-Onirin Police Station.

When contacted, Lagos State police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent, promised to check and get back.
