  • Fulani herdsmen kill nine in Niger village

About 100 suspected Fulani herdsmen on Wednesday night killed nine people in Kushaka village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

They were said to have also injured several other residents and stolen valuables.

The attack on the farming community was reportedly carried out at 2am by the armed herdsmen from neighbouring Kaduna State.

A survivor, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, explained that the attackers caught the villagers napping.

He said: “All the villagers had retired into their homes by 8pm. They were suddenly awakened by the gunshots of the invaders. The bandits ransacked the village, house-to-house and shot indiscriminately. They also inflicted machete cuts on their victims.”

The resident said though some of the villagers managed to escape into the bush, he added that the elderly, mostly women and children, were felled by the fire power of the invaders.

The Chairman of the local government, Abdullahi Yerima, called for the reinforcement of security in the area.

He urged the residents to remain calm, adding that the council would ensure that the marauders are apprehended and brought to justice.

Police spokesman, Richard Oguche, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said it was too early to attribute the incident to any terrorist group.

“We cannot draw any conclusion now but, we are monitoring the situation but no arrests have been made,” Oguche said.

He, however, confirmed the casualty figure, saying preliminary report attributed the attack to the herdsmen.

Oguche said the command had deployed three truck-loads of mobile policemen in the area to investigate the cause of the disturbance and arrest the culprits.

Niger State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeder Association, Alhaji Samaila Rebe, said the attackers were Fulani herdsmen from another part of the country.

He said: “The attackers are indeed Fulani and I can say they are not from Niger State.”

  • I’m ready to kill myself if I don’t know if he loves me

Dear Adeola, I love reading your page a lot. I’m Treasure, I’m 18 years old

and am dating a guy whom I love but I don’t know if he loves me due to my shyness. Please reply. I am confused and ready to kill myself.

You claim to love reading my column but sometimes, the things I feel like saying would make you dislike me. If you feel like killing yourself just because you’re not sure of a guy’s love, then maybe you’re welcome to do just that. You don’t have to seek the counsel of

a soothsayer before you know if a guy loves you. I have treated that many times on this page and I have published hints of knowing if he just wants a fling or a serious relationship.

In these times when some of your mates are battling with how to survive cancer, hunger, lack of funds for education and family neglect, you want to die because of a guy. Okay o, do what your mind tells you. I’m out of it. But in case you want to touch base with reality, let me just say this: Learn to love yourself first. When you love yourself, you won’t be bothered about so many trivial things.

  • Ways to kill boredom

    Ways to kill boredom

And if you’re so bored stiff that you can’t help it, here are things you can do when staring boredom in the face, and none of them involve checking the internet.

Cook a nice meal. You won’t know how much fun it is to cook something you’ve never tried before. Check out cook books or try out something you see on TV. It’ll take up so much of your time that boredom will fly away.

Watch your favourite movie. Nothing breaks the monotony for most people better than kicking back and popping in their favourite movies. For me, it’s Tyler Perry. I get a good laugh watching his (her) antics.

Read a book. There’s probably one you’ve been meaning to pick up for the last few months. Or one you’d like to read again. So open up a good book and get lost in another world.

Make a to-do list of short-term goals. It often feels like there’s not enough time to look past right now, or later today. But if you’re bored, you clearly have time, so why not make a list of things you’d like to accomplish in the near future?

Clean out your closet and drawers. This may not sound like fun, but it actually is kind of refreshing once you get into it, and the feeling you have at the end is worth it. Throw away all your clutter, get organized, and throw away or donate those things you haven’t worn in six years to charity.

Load music onto your i-Pod or MP3 player. Pretty self-explanatory, but it’s a good way to spend your time that doesn’t involve reading up on Britney Spears’ latest mishap.

Call or write that person you’ve been meaning to call or write.

There’s always that one person you know you need to get in touch with but never seem to get around to contacting. “I’m so busy,” you say. “I don’t have time.” Well now that you have time, get in touch. They’ll be glad you did, and you’ll thank yourself afterwards.

Work Out. Always a good choice when you’re feeling a little sluggish.

Pass the time and perfect your physique in one swift motion.

Take a Walk: As for me personally, taking a walk or doing some minutes on my mini-stepper boosts my mood and makes me happy. By the time I’m through with walking, I take time out in the bathroom and feel really

    good afterwards. Try it.

  • Gunmen kill two policemen in Kaduna

Unknown gunmen, who were said to have been terrorising Kaduna villages for some time, have killed two policemen at a road block in Tudun Wada, Kaduna, the state capital.

The Nation learnt that the gunmen, who rode a motorcycle, opened fire on the policemen at about 10pm on Tuesday.

The critically injured policemen were said to have been rushed to a hospital where they later died.

While one of the injured policemen was said to have died at the St. Gerard’s Catholic Hospital, the other reportedly died at the Army Reference Hospital, both in Kaduna.

Police spokesman, Aminu Lawan, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said he was attending a function in Akwa Ibom State when our correspondent called him for confirmation last night.

Lawan said he was not in a position to comment on the incident. Also, Police Commissioner Adenaike Olufemi did not pick his calls when our correspondent called for his comment on the incident.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of St. Gerald’s Catholic Hospital, Mr John Sunday, confirmed that one of the policemen died shortly after he was brought to the hospital.

Gunmen have been on the prowl in Kaduna villages since the beginning of the current insecurity in the North. They have attacked mainly southern Kaduna villages. The recent attack has been blamed on Fulani herdsmen.

Though the Kaduna State Government, in the last one year, has banned the movement of motorcycles after 9pm, investigation showed that the ban has not been effectively obeyed.

Commercial motorcycles are always seen carrying passengers from one point of the city to the other.

  • Robbers kill two policemen in Lagos bank raid

Robbers kill two policemen in Lagos bank raid

Two policemen were allegedly killed by robbers yesterday in a dawn raid of a new-generation bank in Ifako, a Lagos suburb.

One of the slain policemen was simply identified as Inspector Nafiu.

The hoodlums, numbering about 16, were said to have gained access into the bank by scaling the fence which separates it and a Conoil fuel filling station. They came in two vehicles.

Some of them laid ambush for the policemen outside the bank, while others attempted to break into the bank.

Sources said the robbers tied all the security men on duty while attempting to break into the banking hall.

When they could not break into the hall, they tried to dismantle the bank’s ATM machine with an equipment.

Sources said it was in the process that some policemen from Area ‘G’ Command, Ogba, on routine patrol, stumbled on them.

On sighting the policemen, the robbers opened fire, killing one of them instantly and injuring another.

The police fought back, leading to the killing of another policeman. Four of the robbers were reportedly injured.

Residents said they took cover in their homes to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

Two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and some policemen from the Area ‘G’ Command, moved to the scene, but the robbers had fled, leaving the slain.

Lagos command spokesperson Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), however, said only one policeman was killed.

The injured policeman, she said, was in hospital.

Braide, who said a gas cylinder and some drilling equipment were recovered, advised the public and hospitals in Lagos to alert the police if anybody with bullet wounds comes to them.

  • Gunmen kill ex-Oyo SSG’s guard

The Ibadan home of a former Secretary to the Oyo State Government (SSG), Mr. Ayodele Adigun, was on Tuesday invaded by gunmen.

The gunmen killed Adigun’s night guard, simply identified as Pa Olapade. They reportedly stormed the house in Akobo at night.

The former SSG, who is a chieftain of the Accord in the state, was away in Ekiti State.

The body of the guard was discovered yesterday morning by the day guard, Mr. Wasiu Adeniran, when he resumed duty. He said the late Olapade was blindfolded and gagged.

Adeniran said: “My shift is from 7am to 7pm. When I resumed yesterday, I knocked the gate for about 30 minutes, but there was no answer. There was no sound coming from Baba’s radio, which he normally leaves on. A neighbour’s guard, Usman, saw me there and told me to knock harder. That was when I used my hands to pry the gate open and was Baba’s body lying near the entrance. He was tied. I raised the alarm and called Oga’s secretary and special assistant.”

Adeniran said the assailants must have jumped over the fence, adding that a ladder was found by the fence.

Adigun said he must have been the target of the gunmen because nothing was stolen from the house. He said they did not break into the main building.

Adigun said he had no clue why anyone would be after his life, but suspected it might be political.

“I do not have deals. I owe no one and no one owes me any money”, he added.

  • Gunmen kill 20 in Plateau

Twenty people have been killed by gunmen in Jos, Plateau State, when people suspected to be Fulani invaded two villages in Riyom Local Government.

A member representing Riyom Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Daniel Dem, who confirmed the attack, said: “Some armed Fulani have just launched an attack on two villages in my constituency, killing at least 20 people and burning several houses.”

The Chairman of Riyom Local Government, Mr. Sam Gyang Audu, an engineer, who also confirmed the incident, said: “From the figures made available to me by my people, the casualties could be more than 20 because the area under attack is divided between Plateau and Kaduna states.”

Police Commissioner Chris Olakpe confirmed the incident, but said no life was lost.

He said: “I am in charge here and I am telling you that no life was lost in Riyom. My men are on ground there, led by the DPO of Riyom. They have restored peace.”

The Chairman of Riyom Local Government has asked the Federal Government to withdraw soldiers from the peace-keeping operation in the area and replace them with police.

He spoke at a news conference in Jos.

The council boss alleged that peace would have been restored to the local government long ago, but for the activities of the soldiers attached to the Special Task Force (STF) on Jos crisis code-named ‘Operation safe haven’.

Audu said: “Having carefully followed the activities of the STF members in Riyom Local Government, the council and its people believe the STF has overstayed its usefulness.

“The call is arising from the unpatriotic activities of some of its personnel in the course of performing their duties.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to set up a machinery to ensure the gradual withdrawal of soldiers from our locality, replacing them with police and other security agents.

“We believe peace between the Fulani and the Berom can be achieved through dialogue and not by peace enforcement.

“We have enough facts to prove that the STF is not interested in promoting peace between the Fulani and the Berom. It is rather fuelling the conflict, to enable them remain in the state.

“Soldiers should be returned to the barracks to ensure peace in our communities. They are fuelling conflicts, they are behind the protracted crisis between the Fulani and the Berom.”

Said he: “They were killed near the Maiduguri International Hotel (MAIH) and Shehuri Ward. The Joint Task Force (JTF) and police barricaded the areas for over an hour to prevent further attacks and killings. The politicians have been buried according to Islamic rites at the Gwange cemetery.”

Speaking on the motive for the assassination, he said: “Prior to their killings by the gunmen, Gula and Gambo participated in the Town Hall meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan last Friday at the Government House Multipurpose Hall on the Boko Haram insurgency and withdrawal of JTF from Borno State.

“These killings are a clear case of cold-blood murder and are condemnable. Security agents must unravel the circumstances that led to the killings of these PDP politicians in their homes in Umarari and Shehuri wards.”

Gunmen kill 16 in Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe attacks

Gunmen killed 16 people in attacks across three north’s states at the weekend.

Seven people were killed in Zamfara, six in Yobe and three in Kaduna states, between Saturday night and yesterday.

Gunmen numbering about 30, attacked Beni village in Dansadau emirate of Maru Local government area of Zamfara State. They killed seven people and injured many others.

Six people were killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram members in Yobe State, according to the Joint Task Force (JTF).

The JTF spokesman, Lt. Eli Lazarus, said yesterday that the attack on Ngalda town, took place on Saturday night. He said no arrest had been made.

The Police in Kaduna yesterday confirmed that gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen killed three people in a night attack on Aduwan Gida village in Zangon Kataf Local government area in the southern part of Kaduna. But the community put the dead at five.

It was gathered that an unspecified number of people were injured in the attack which began at about 10pm on Saturday when the villagers were mourning the death of an elderly man.

Sources said the people were dancing late into the night celebrating the passage of the old man when the gunmen struck, shooting sporadically at the crowd.

“You know as part of our culture, just like in other cultures, when an old man dies at a very ripe age, we celebrate him by dancing. So our people were dancing at the residence of the deceased and at about 10:00pm, some people came and started shooting at the crowd.

“Five people, including a woman and her three months old baby, were killed on the spot. Many other people were injured and were taken to the hospital in Zonkwa.

“The community was thrown into confusion as people ran in different directions for safety. We were so terrified because we had nothing to defend ourselves with and these people came shooting at us” the source narrated.

The source added that the youths staged a mass protest against the attack, accusing the military and police personnel manning the numerous checkpoints in the area of not doing their work.

Kaduna state police commissioner Olufemi Adenaike, who confirmed the attack, said three people, including a nursing mother and her three months old baby, were killed while many others were injured.

Adenaike said: “there was an attack on Aduwan community in the night on Saturday by some armed gang suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. We are not sure they are Fulani herdsmen because we have not established who could have been responsible for the attack.

“The community was mourning and some people attacked them for no just cause. This morning (on Sunday) we learnt that the youths in the area were protesting, but we have deployed our men there to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order. I can assure you that the area is calm and people are going about their normal duty peacefully”.

He said no arrest had been made.
