  • Expectant mum killed, four injured in cult clash

    An expectant mother  was shot dead and four others were injured, at the weekend, during a cult clash at Ebute-Meta.

    It was gathered that the fight between the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities followed the killing of a member of one of the gangs.

    His colleagues were said to have gone after the other gang, wreaking havoc Jebba Street.

    The injured have been taken to hospital.

    It was gathered that the gang was planning another attack yesterday afternoon, before the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) for Ebute-Meta Station, Saheed Quadri, a Superintendent of Police (SP), received a tip-off and swooped on them.

    One of the gang members identified as Baba Jara was arrested at their hideout in Kano/Odunfa.

    It was learnt that there was jubilation over Jara’s arrest, by residents, who  described him as an armed robber and one of the late Sunday Terror’s strong men.

    Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, Superitendent, said the suspect was assiting with investigation.

    She said: “Yes, I confirm that at about 2:45pm on Friday, clues led the DPO to a notorious member of the gang. He was arrested at Kano/Odunfa, Ebute-Meta. The suspect was the gang’s armourer. He confessed to being a member of the late Sunday Terror’s gang. He also said that their gang led by one Itakun, shot five persons at Jebba Street, killing a woman. We shall not relent till we flush them out. Effort is ongoing to arrest the other members.”

  • Two Nigerians killed in South Africa

    The President, Nigeria Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, has confirmed the killing of two Nigerians in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa.

    Anyene reportedly told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Port Harcourt in a telephone interview from Pretoria that the two men were killed on July 29 at different areas in Johannesburg.

    According to him, the first victim, Gideon Ogalaonye, an indigene of Onitsha, Anambra, was allegedly shot dead at 7pm on the way to his daughters residence.

    He said that the second victim, Nnamdi Michael, an indigene of Enugu State, was allegedly stabbed to death by a suspected Zimbabwean national at Yeoville at 8pm on the same day.

  • Six killed, 12 injured in Kogi crash

    Six persons died and 12 others injured in an accident on the Anyigba-Ajaokuta road at Ojuwo-Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State last Saturday.

    The accident involved a Toyota bomber bus (MKD 841 XA) and Golf (LKJ 335 CV).

    Assistant Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mrs. Amobi Modupe Stanley, who confirmed the accident, said it occurred at 1.15pm.

    She said her men got to the scene at about 1.59pm; six of the passengers died on the spot while 12 others sustained injuries.

    The injured are receiving treatment at Rima hospital and the bodies have also been deposited there.

    She identified dangerous overtaking as the cause of the accident and advised drivers to be patient on the highway, especially during festive periods.

  • Five killed in Cross River

    FIve people have been killed in a renewed communal crisis between Adadama community in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State and Amagu community in Nko Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, The Nation gathered yesterday.

     There has been a protracted conflict between both communities, who are neigbours, due to a land dispute.

     A source said on Tuesday, some women from Adadama went to their farms to harvest cassava but were chased away by some youths from Amagu.

     When they returned to their community to report the situation, some Adadama youths went back to the farm with them to sort out the situation, but a fracas ensued that led to five of them being shot.

     Four of them died on the spot, while one later died in the hospital on Wednesday. Three of them sustained gunshot wounds, it was learnt.

     Cross River State Security Adviser, Mr Jude Ngaji, confirmed the incident, saying his had reached his counterpart in Ebonyi State to address the matter.

    According to him, they have been responsive to the matter and 80 mobile policemen have been drafted to the area for the next one month, to maintain peace, while the government of both state meet to resolve the issues.

    The family of a slain 38-year-old commercial driver, Wasiu Fasasi, has urged security agencies to fish out his killers and prosecute them.

    Fasasi was allegedly butchered by yet to be indentified persons shortly after he went out to meet some unknown friends on May 11, 2016.

    The incident happened in the Konto area of Ayete community in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State.

    It was learnt that the deceased was relaxing at home with his family when he suddenly received a call on his mobile phone at about 5 pm.

    He was said to have told his wife that he was going out to see some friends for an important meeting at Konto near Ayete community in Ibarapa.

    It was learnt that he did not disclose to his wife the identity of his ‘friends’ and their meeting place.

    A search party was launched for him when his pregnant wife, Risikat, raised the alarm several hours after he did not return home or answer phone calls.

    His mutilated body was allegedly discovered by the roadside with his motorcycle and GSM phone intact.

    The incident was reported to Ayete Police Division, while the case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, for proper investigation.

    One of his brothers, Mr. Ayandele Fasasi, said:”The gruesome death of my younger brother has brought untold grief not only to me but our entire family. His death is unfortunate because he was the one taking care of our 80-year-old father in the village.

    “His mobile phone’s call log has been obtained but no arrest has been made so far by the police. Therefore, I want to urge all security agencies to unravel his killers and prosecute them in the interest of justice, so his death would not be in vain.”

    It was learnt that the father of three has since been buried in Ayete, while the state Commissioner for Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, has promised that his killers would be arrested.

    Oyo Police spokesman, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, was not available for comments at press time as he did not answer his call or return a text message forwarded to his mobile phone by our correspondent.

    Gunmen kill five Police officers in Rivers

    Unknown gunmen early Monday killed five Police officers at Okogbie community in Ahoada West Local Government Area (LGA), of Rivers state.

    The victims Nasiru Halidu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and four other rank and file were serving in Bayelsa state, under  30  Police Mobil Force(PMF), Yenagoa, the state Capital.

    The victims, who were reportedly ambushed and killed around 3am early Monday, around a military check point in the area,  were reportedly coming back from a special assignment in Yobe state.

    The River state Commissioner of Police (CP), Musa Kimo expressed sadness o the murder of the five officers, describing the killing as senseless.

    Kimo in a statement by the spokesman of the state Police Command, Ahmad, Muhammad, a DSP, vowed to finish out their killers and ensure they are prosecuted.

    He said, “We are deeply pained by the senseless and barbaric killing of our colleagues attached to 30 PMF Yenegoa, who were ambushed in the early hours of today at Okogbie enroute Yenegoa, Bayelsa state.

    “Today’s tragedy has again demonstrated the enormous calamities we face and witness in the course of doing our job. We put our lives on the line everyday to confront crime and violence in our communities.

    “We will stop at nothing to bring the perpetrators of this dastard act to justice.” He promised.

    They team from the special work, were said to be travelling in two vehicles, the first vehicle passed successfully but the second was waylaid and all the five occupants including the DSP and driver killed.

    Ahoada axis o the state has been a hot bed of violent crimes, killings and cultism in the past years.

     

  • Five suspected robbers killed

    Five suspected robbers have been killed and others injured in a clash between the robbers and the Inspector General of Police Anti-Robbery Squad, which partnered a hunter, Ali Kwarra, in Bauchi State.

    Police spokesman Haruna Mohammed told reporters yesterday that arms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.

    He said the battle followed an intelligence report received by the police and Kwarra’s partnership team.

    Mohammed said: “The incident occurred at Kunjin/Lodio forest, Bursari, in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The suspects were attacked while preparing for an operation.”

    He said four AK 47 rifles, one locally-made revolver pistol, 164 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition, nine rounds of .9mm ammunition, seven empty magazines, two expended ammunition and N17,000,cash were recovered from the suspected robbers.

    The police spokesman said their bodies were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Azare morgue and investigation was on.

    Kwarra said the suspects terrorised residents.

    He said they killed people and imposed levies on the villagers, ranging from N400,000 to N1 million.

    The Secretary of Miyetti Allah, Alhaji Adamu Gidado, said: “The robbers snatched over N41 million after killing seven people. I hope and pray that now that they are dead, we will experience peace.”

    Unknown gunmen Thursday killed a Police Sergeant Sunday Adoga, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

    Also killed by the suspected criminals was a man whose identity was yet to be known. He was hit by stray bullet.

    The state Police command confirmed the deaths.

    The Police spokesman, Ahmad Mohammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the hoodlums laid ambush and opened fire on Adoga’s patrol Van, killing him on the spot.

    The incident reportedly happened between Garrison and waterlines junction between 9 and 10 am. The Police have vowed that the perpetrators of the dastardly act will never go scot-free, although they are yet to be apprehended.

    The statement by Mohammad said, “We are deeply saddened by the senseless killings of Sgt. Sunday Adoga, and the other innocent citizen, who were ambushed at different locations by the marauding gang Thursday, along Garrison and waterlines junctions.

    “Sadly, today’s event once again demonstrated the profound danger our men face and witness in daily bases. Police officers put their lives on the line every day to confront crime and violence in our communities and society at large.

    “As for the criminals, they can run but it’s just a matter of time, we will caught up with them and bring them to justice.”

    The incident Thursday led to commuters and motorists in the area of crime to scamper for safety as the gunmen shot sporadically, between the busy Garrison and waterlines area of Port Harcourt/Aba road. Both passengers and motorists reportedly abandoned their vehicles and ran for their lives.

    Some of the passengers who were close to the scene of crime jumped through bus windows some of them sustained injuries especially on their legs and arms. They thought the boys invaded the INEC office which is close to the waterline junction, where the Police officer was reportedly killed.

    One of the passengers who narrated his ordeal to the Nation said, “We boarded the coaster vehicle at Park, going to Eleme junction. When we got to close to Garrison junction we began to hear sound of gunshots, before we got there (Garrison), we noticed that vehicles ahead of us had all parked and none was coming from Waterline area. We also parked, after a while, the sound dowsed and movement continued.

    “When we got to waterlines we saw boys with guns alighted from a bus, and began to shoot, carelessly, everybody began to look for escape route, passengers, drivers; private car owners abandoned the vehicles and ran. I jumped through the coaster window other followed, i ran into a small hideout everybody came and fail on me, I am now in serious pain.

    “A policeman and another man were killed by the suspected hoodlums,” he said.

     

  • Five killed, others injured as truck crashes in Osun

    At least, five people on Friday evening lost their lives in an accident at Akoda junction, Ede, about ten kilometers from Osogbo, Osun State capital.

    It was gathered that the accident occurred when a truck coming from Gbongan end of Osogbo Gbongan road lost control as result of over speeding.

    It was further gathered that the truck lost its break and ran into people hawking at the road side, killing five and injuring another five.

    The Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps, Osun Sector Command, Mr. Rufus Ajibola Adewumi, who disclosed that the accident was caused by over speeding, said the casualties include two male adults, one female adult and one male child strapped to her mother’s back.

    He added that four people were injured while one person who was trapped in the crash escaped unhurt.

  • ‘I know those who killed my son’

    FATHER of Monsuru Alapini, the commercial motorcyclist aka Okada rider, allegedly killed by cultists in Oworonsoki, Lagos, on Valentine’s Day has urged Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase to bring the killers to book.

    Chief Anida Fowotade Alapini, in a statement yesterday, said he knew those who killed his son.

    Monsuru was stabbed on the chest at ferry area of Oworonshoki and died on his way to Gbagada General Hospital.

    His father identified one Sondoko as the leader of the  group that killed his son, saying: “There was a Valentine Day party somewhere very close to the Oloworo of Oworonshoki Palace, one of the secret boys members who had been having running battle with my son, simply identified as Small engaged him in an argument and within minutes, he drew out a dagger and stabbed my son in the chest. He slumped immediately.

    “Small ran and was pursued by a group. He escaped into a place where Sondoko led Obasanjo, Bayo, Labaika, Idris, Kabiru, Waidi and a host of other thugs to ward off those pursuing Small.

    “They came out with guns and opened fire on the crowd. A lot of people sustained gunshot wounds.

    “This led to the crowd retreating and they visited their anger on a two-storey building. The situation eventually got out of hands as hoodlums hijacked it, spreading to adjoining streets like Miyaki, L&K, Akerele etc. “

    He accused the police of arresting the wrong people and of also taking side in the dispute.

    “Sese, a cousin to the deceased who tried to help him when he was stabbed is among those being held by the police,” Alapini said, adding: “The Police at D4 (Homicide Section), Panti stepped in. They invited a top chief to their station and within hours, he was back in his house. We understand he was asked to produce Sondoko and the rest of them, but till date, nothing has happened. It is like justice has been murdered. I call on the Inspector –General of Police, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Oba Rilwanu Akiolu to please intervene to ensure that those who killed my son are brought to book.

    The late Monsuru’s widow, Damiliola, is also demanding justice, saying: “Those who killed my husband deserve to die.”
