Killers in Southern Kaduna will face God’s wrath – Emir

Emir of Jema’a, Alhaji Muhammadu Isa Muhammadu has said that, those responsible for killings in southern parts of Kaduna will face God’s wrath.
The Emir stated this at his palace in Kafanchan on Saturday when he received Kafanchan Peace Forum, a voluntary group working for genuine reconciliation among people of the troubled areas of Southern Kaduna.
The Emir who received the forum, which consists of Muslim and Christians from different tribes of Southern Kaduna with excitement, said he hopes to a Kafanchan and the entire zone return to their old glory of peaceful communities.
According to the Emir, “Kafanchan used to be a very peaceful and hospitable town where people from different walks of life enjoyed to work and live. All of a sudden, we don’t know what happened that people start killing one another. We don’t know the people doing this but we condemn it
“All those killing will face God’s judgment and wrath, because no religion preaches killing of fellow human being. So, we must hold ourselves together irrespective of our ethno-religious background and work together for peace.
“We must realise that, it is we people of faiths that are killing ourselves. When you inquiry about people who have been killed, they are either Christians or Muslim. So, we must stop these killings and put an end to this indigene/settler dichotomy, because no one group can displace the other,” he said.
He however expressed support for the forum, urging them to take the peace efforts very seriously.
Earlier, another First Class Chief, the Agwan Bajju, Malam Nuhu Bature while receiving the forum in his palace in Zangon Kataf, said patience and forgiveness are the solutions to the cycle of crises in the zone.
He urged the group to sensitize the youths to desist from rumour mongering, saying, that was partly responsible for some of the crises. “What happened have happened, but we must forget the past and forgive ourselves for peace and development to reign”, he added.
Meanwhile, leader of the forum, Alhaji Samaila Barau Maigoro said, Kafanchan Peace Forum was formed to compliment government efforts, especially in the area of reconciliation through reaching out to the youths.

  • Ijaw to FG: fish out Admiral Ikoli’s killers

•‘His death is a big blow to us’

Ijaw leaders have expressed anger over perceived silence of the Federal Government on the assassination of the Fleet Commander, Western Naval Command, Lagos, Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli. Ikoli, who was also a member of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement (CADEP), was found dead in a mysterious circumstance in his apartment at Apapa, Lagos, about two weeks ago.

The umbrella body of the Ijaw, the Ijaw National Congress (INC), described his death as a big blow and asked the Federal Government to investigate the circumstances surrounding his killing with a view to finding the perpetrators. The Chairman, INC, Central Zone, Chief Kennedy Odiowei, said the government should either set up a commission of inquiry to investigate his death or use its intelligence network to find his killers.

He said the Ijaw held the slain general in high esteem adding that the killers must be fished out and made to face the wrath of the law. Odiowei said: “It was a big blow to the Ijaw nation because he was one of the sons we we held in very high esteem.

We are very sad. We want the Federal Government to investigate the immediate cause of the death of General Ikoli. We have heard many controversies surrounding his death. “We were not there and cannot ascertain the actual thing that happened.

But we don’t want this matter to be swept under the carpet. The INC and the Ijaw Nation want the government to properly investigate this matter and come out with the perpetrators. “The Government should set up a panel of inquiry or investigate through their intelligent network to unmask the identities of persons responsible for this murder.

The killers must face the wrath of the law. “We don’t have enough people in the military. We have been shortchanged by the state. Even in the quota system, the north always hijack the process and use their names to fill the quotas. So, the few ones we have we don’t want to lose any of them”. Mr. Abiodun, leader of Edo Amnesty phase 3, said Ijaw youths and Niger Delta youths in general are not happy with the murder, adding that report that said he shot himself was to cover up those who committed the heinous crime.

“For me, there is no way he can kill himself, that is the main reason why most of us are not happy over the drama. Don’t forget he is an Ijaw man and nobody can kill an Ijaw son and go free. On his part, Comrade Victor Ben Tari, President Eye for Niger Delta said his organization is planning to sue the Federal government and the Nigerian Navy over the murder of Rear Admiral Daniel Teikumo Ikoli.

He said by next week, “We are going to gather on this issue; because our brother is not a mad man, and never exhibited any sign of a man who is abnormal; we are going to issue an ultimatum to that effect. “We are calling on Federal government to expose the killers or attract our anger. “Let me expose some of our agenda, we are going to order the Federal government to investigate the suspicious killing of our Ijaw man. We also want the federal government to involve Niger Delta leaders in the investigation of the death of our brother.

This is our position, that was why we want to hold meeting by next week.” Comrade Bristol-Alagbariya Emmanuel, former Ijaw Youth leader and National President/CEO Ijaw Young Entrepreneurs and Investors Network Worldwide said nothing has been done to apprehend the murderers of the naval officer. “Till date nothing has been done in that regard.

We talk about marginalization, consciously by the wisdom of those who designed the constitution; they designed it in such a way that there must be equity and equal participation so that it will create position and patriotism. People will want to commit themselves into Nigerian projects. “But as it stands today it is an unfortunate situation that a military man, an Ijaw son of such a cadre could be murdered in his house.

And supposedly he should be staying in the barracks or even if he is staying in his house, that house ought to be adequately protected and secured. “He was promoted recently, he is yet to enjoy his privileges and contribute his own quota to Nigerian government before he was murdered.

And till date there is no statement from the president to condemn the act despite the fact that Nigeria has invested so much money training him. “Despite the fact that he is an Ijaw man, it sends a negative precedents that nothing has been done till now, he is just or been left to his family and kinsmen and probably one or two investigations going on which the public is not aware of.

The Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) also joined other Ijaw voices to call for a thorough and wide-reaching investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Rear Admiral Teikumo Ikoli. President of the IYC, Eric Omare, in a brief reaction to the development, also demanded that the IYC be allowed to be part of the investigating team, adding that all Ijaw youths are demanding justice in the matter.

“My demand on behalf of the Ijaw Youth Council is for the federal government to carry out a detail investigation to unravel the cause of the death and bring to justice those responsible for the cause of the death. “We also demand that the family and representatives of the IYC should be part and parcel of the investigation team.

This death must not be swept under the carpet under any circumstances. Justice must be done”, he said.

  • Slain woman’s son accuses police of shielding ‘killers’

Slain woman’s son accuses police of shielding ‘killers’

    •’We’re interrogating our personnel’

Family of slain yam cake (Ojojo) seller, Kudirat Adebayo, yesterday accused the police of attempts to shield their men who allegedly killed her.

The woman was hit on the head by stray bullet from policemen who were chasing some internet fraudsters popularly known as Yahoo Boys at Mushin tollgate on Tuesday evening. She died on the spot.

Her son, Abayomi alleged that the Olosan Divisional Police Officer (DPO) is trying to exonerate his men of the alleged dastardly act.

Abayomi, who is Lagos State Coordinator for Christian Youth Association of Nigeria (CYON), said the DPO told him that he cannot pinpoint the policeman who fired the fatal shot.

The DPO, he claimed, said the deceased might have been killed by the criminals’ bullet.

He said he was told to await the result of an autopsy that would be conducted on his mother, adding that the DPO said she might have died of heart attack and not bullet wounds.

Abayomi said:  “When we got back to the station the DPO told us he could not give us the true picture as he was still investigating. He said he could not pinpoint the person who shot the gun. He said the autopsy would indicate what killed my mother. The policeman who shot my mother is popularly known as Chiboy and he was with a guy called Prince.

”The DPO admitted they were his boys but said he could not give us details until they remove the bullet in my mum’s body and confirm it was that of policemen. The mortuary management said the autopsy will take three weeks. They also said I have to sign to pay N1000 daily for accommodation. The DPO has changed the case. He said it was hooligans that were fighting but there was no fight at all.”

Reliving his last moments with his late mother, Abayomi said: “I was at her shop around 3pm but she had not prepared her Ojojo. She said she felt weak and was not ready to fry. So I told her I was hungry and she said I should go home that my sibling had cooked. I left there and went for a meeting close by. I was still at the meeting when I heard gun shots. ”We felt it was from a party of Yahoo guys and didn’t bother. I did not know my mother had been gunned down. They said the shooter was attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Olosan Police Station and his duty was to arrest Yahoo guys. As he was chasing the guys, he shot sporadically and killed my mum.

”My last word to her was that I would be back. I had finished eating and was going back to her. I even told her I was insolvent and she said I should see her when going to collect some Ojojo for her grandchildren.  My children were in church then if not they would have been with her on holiday and might have been hurt as well.”

Abayomi appealed for justice, noting that he neither has the resources nor voice to fight alone. He said: “My case is like a crippled person that wants to clap.  How do I do it if I don’t know people who can help me fight for justice? I don’t have money. My youngest sibling is in SS2, the other one just finished shoemaking training and is trying to gather money for freedom.

”So, the burden is on my neck. Do I want to train my siblings or sponsor a case without back-up? I am a social media person and I help people with their own cause with some results. So this happening to me is like a dream I don’t expect. I believe social media and the press can help me fight this. I don’t know what to do.”

Salamoni Akeem, an aide of former House of Representatives member, Kako Are, who visited the bereaved family yesterday, said: “We have been together for over 10years now. We were together with the mother even on Friday at the exact spot she was shot dead. I even tried to buy Ojojo from her. I sent a proxy because if she knew I was the buyer, she wouldn’t let me pay.

”She prayed for us before I left that night. I was so shocked when I got a call around 9:30pm that she was shot. One of the reasons we are here is to get to the bottom of this thing and stop this attitude of our policemen. I still believe we can trust our policemen but we need to remove the bad eggs among them first. If they see a culprit that they need to apprehend, that doesn’t warrant them to be shooting sporadically in the midst of innocent lives struggling to survive.

”Our policemen need orientation. Many people have tagged Mushin as a den of hooligans, which I don’t believe is true. The citizens need to be protected at all costs and not harassed or threatened.”

The command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said: ”We are investigating, trying to get behind the scene information. We are trying to know the best way to handle the matter. We are currently interrogating the policemen allegedly involved and have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

”We cannot say for sure what happened and who was involved until the completion of investigation. The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) at Panti, Yaba. You would get details as soon as we have concrete facts.”

Cynthia Osokogu’s killers to die by hanging

•Facebook stalker, nephew found guilty of ex-general’s daughter’s murder

Two of the four men tried for the 2012 murder of a general’s daughter, Cynthia Osokogu, are to pay the supreme price for the offence.

Okwumo Echezona Nwabufo and his nephew  Olisaeloka Ezike are to die by hanging, Justice Olabisi Akinlade of the Lagos High Court said yesterday.

Justice Akinlade found them guilty of drugging, chaining and strangling Osokogu, who was a Nasarawa State University post-graduate student, to death at Cosmilla Hotel, Festac Town, Lagos, on July 22, 2012.

Orji Osita, 37, and Ezike Nonso, 29, were discharged and acquitted of the charge of recklessness, negligence and possession of stolen goods.

Osita, a pharmacist, had been accused of supplying Nwabufo with Rophynol, a sedative which was allegedly used on the deceased, without a prescription.

While Nonso was accused of buying her stolen Blackberry phones from Ezike.

Nwabufo, 37, Ezike, 27, Osita and Nonso were arraigned on February 8, 2013, on a six-count charge of conspiracy, murder, stealing, recklessness, negligence and possession of stolen goods.

    They pleaded not guilty.

Delivering her judgment which began at 10:53am and ended at about 3:20pm, Justice Akinlade held that the state had proved the counts of conspiracy, murder and stealing beyond reasonable doubt.

She held that with its 10 witnesses and 17 exhibits, the prosecution’s case against Nwabufo and Ezike was uncontroverted and that the circumstantial evidence brought by the state was “cogent, complete, unequivocal and compelling.”

But the judge resolved in Osita and Nonso’s favour, doubts in the prosecution’s evidence against them.

Relying on the witnesses’ testimonies, Nwabufor’s and Ezike’s confessional statements and the circumstantial evidence, Justice Akinlade said: “The court has no doubt that the first and second defendants killed the deceased and if there are contradictions in their case, they are minor contradictions.”

Before passing judgment, the judge asked the defendants if they had anything to say.

Their counsel, Victor Okpara and Emeka Eze pleaded for mercy. Okpara added that Nwabufo was a first time offender who has “tremendous energy to do something worthwhile with his life. I urge this court to grant him a reformative sentence.”

In her response, Justice Akinlade said: “I have listened to the plea of counsel (allocutus). Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State says clearly that a person who commits murder shall be sentenced to death.

“In judgment, justice is required not only for the victim, but also for the society. In their attempt to steal Cynthia’s property, the first and second defendants stole her life. They were not even remorseful. But for the efforts of the police and the Ministry of Justice we wouldn’t have been able to do anything. This court cannot change the law.”

She sentenced Nwabufo and Ezike to 14 years imprisonment for stealing on the first count and three years imprisonment on the two counts of conspiracy to steal and commit murder.

On the second count of murder, Justice Akinlade said: “I pronounce the sentence of this court upon you, Okwumo Echezona Nwabufo and  Olisaeloka Ezike, that both of you be hanged by the neck until you are dead and may God have mercy on your souls.”

In reaching its decision, the court considered, among others, whether the prosecution proved that there was a murder, the cause of death and whether it was the defendant’s actions that led to Osokogu’s death.

The prosecution, the judge said, not only proved beyond reasonable doubts that the deceased died, it also showed that she did not die a natural death and that her death was the direct result of the first two defendants’ action.

She said the witnesses’ testimonies were corroborated by the exhibits, which included the first convict’s laptop containing nude pictures of the deceased and those of other victims.

Nwabufo, who disowned his confessional statement in court, stated that the deceased was his fiancée, adding that he did not know how she died.

He said: “The late Cynthia was my girlfriend; we were close as the way lovers are before they get married.

“I promised her that I would marry her and she accepted but told me it is still early that I should wait till Christmas when I would visit her parents in Delta State.”

But the court held, among others, that his failure to provide basic information about the deceased, such as her hometown, her university and course of study, the date he proposed to her and the fact that he had never met or spoken to her family, suggested that his answers were contrived.

Reading from Nwabufo’s and Ezike’s disowned confessional statements, which were admitted after a trial-within-trial, the judge said it was immaterial whether they intended to kill the deceased or not, because they could be taken to intend the natural consequences of their action.

On Ezike’s statement, the court said: “There is ample evidence that he participated in the crime. He assisted in tying down the deceased. He bought the chain with which the deceased was chained. He acted in concert with the defendant. In such a case, it does not matter who did what.”

  • My son’s killers must not go unpunished, says dad

My son’s killers must not go unpunished, says dad

Family of a late technician with LG electronics, Uyi Uwagboe, have called on the Nigerian Police to as a matter of urgency investigate the death of their son, who was found dead in his pool of blood in Satellite Town, Lagos.

The late Uwagboe, 31, an Edo State indigene, died on January 24. He was buried last Friday.

According to the deceased’s father, Mr Kennedy Uwagboe, a trader, his son went to work in the morning but by 9:30pm, he received a phone call asking him to come that his son has been attacked by hoodlums in Satellite Town.

He said: “The person also called his younger brother and fiancée. We were thinking if he could have been kidnapped. So the police patrolling Satellite area from Agboju Police Station accompanied us to the scene. We met Uyi dead in his pool of blood. His phones, laptop and money were taken away. He was seen with the young man that called us to inform us of the incident.

“We later moved to Agboju Police Station. From there, we took his body to the morgue of the Nigerian Navy Hospital in Ojo, around 1am.

“I went back to the police station the following day, wrote a statement and the officers sympathised with us, saying they will see what they can do on the matter but, till today (last Thursday), we have no information on what the police has done about the case..

“My wish is that government should do something on the issue, because I want to know who would have cut his life short, a young promising, upcoming boy, who the whole family is looking up to, and was supposed to get married this year.”

He said the family has ordered the release of the man who called him to tell him of the incident, saying the man may be innocent to have stood by his dying son.

“The man said he met Uyi in his pool of blood begging for help, and that if they had picked him earlier, he would have probably survived. But, everybody was running because of bad boys in the area. By the time we got there about an hour, it was too late. Uyi was the one that gave the guy our phone numbers.

“The only information we have so far is that the police have arrested one person, who knows the people that killed my son. The person mentioned five names to the police officers who told us they have taken the suspect to the houses of the other suspects, arrested another suspect and father of one of them.  So the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, Panti, Lagos Mainland.

“They said they will pursue the case so as to get the hoodlums, but we have not heard anything from them. I would have loved if those people were apprehended and prosecuted.”

He described his son, who will turn 31 this year, as easy going.

“He hates trouble, he will never fight, he loved peace and he is always concerned about everybody,” he said.

The deceased’s fiancée, Fatimah Junaid, said she has lost hope in what government can do on the matter.

She described Uyi as a good person, God fearing and loyal.

“He had a giving spirit, he forgives and forgets. He was always there for me and my family. We have been dating for about eight years and we hope to get married this year,” she said.

The late Uwagboe’s younger brother, Henry, described his late brother as the best in all ramifications, saying he would miss him for everything.

He said his brother’s journey to and from work does not usually have anything to do with Satellite area, wondering how he got there.

  • Southern Kaduna ‘killers’ to be prosecuted, says El-Rufai

Southern Kaduna ‘killers’ to be prosecuted, says El-Rufai

Those found culpable in the Southern Kaduna killings will be prosecuted, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has said.

Many people have been killed in the crisis in the area.

Describing the killings as unfortunate and condemnable, El Rudai spoke when the Council of Traditional Chiefs and Emirs, led by Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, visited him.

Giving an outlook of his plans for the volatile part of the state, El-Rufai said “Those involved in attacking and killing people and those behind the violence are being tracked and we hope, with the arrests, they will be prosecuted.”

He continued: “We have to go back to the dialogue and reconciliation efforts we have started in the past. We have a Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue that has been working in southern Kaduna in the past two years.

“They have done similar work in Jos in reconciling the conflicting communities in Plateau and when they completed that assignment we invited them to come to Southern Kaduna. They facilitated the signing of Kafanchan Declaration in April 2016.

“This is not something to talk about because I am not the first governor to receive this kind of treatment, every governor in the last 15 years in this state has been treated this way and it is part of the challenges and burden of leadership. So I am not disturbed.

“As you know, leaders especially in any political dispensation, must learn to tolerate a lot of things because you have those who like you and those who oppose you because of political differences.

” That is why I did not take this personal, but what we will do is to prosecute all those responsible for the killings. And we are working hard with security agencies to ensure our citizens are safe and secure,” the governor said.

He said the biggest assignment was for the citizens to unite and should do their best to see that they have peace and unity, which is prerequisite for progress and development.

“Besides security challenges, we are faced with poor infrastructure, poor social amenities, poor schools, bad roads, lack of power and potable water and that is what this government is working to provide for the people.

We have cut down the gains and monetary profits people get in government just to be able to provide democratic dividends to the people. In your domains, you can see on-going projects at various stages of completion.

“We are also committed to demonstrating fairness and equity in the way we execute projects all over the state. I and my deputy and all those who work under this administration, have taken oaths with either the Quran or the Bible that we will be fair and just in our affairs. I am giving you my promise that we will be guided by this oath in all our dealings.”

He said the government had adopted measures to tackle the persistent crises in the area.

“I have met the Chief of Army Staff and he has approved the establishment of two battalions in Sothern Kaduna; one in Kafanchan and the other one in Kachia.

“I thought the one in Kachia will be sited elsewhere because of the presence of both the Nigerian Army and Navy Schools but I know the military has a reason of putting it in Kachia.

“Kaduna state government is looking for a temporary place in Kafanchan to provide the army a temporary settlement before a barrack will be constructed for them.”

He said, they are starting with Kafanchan, then that of Kachia will follow.

“We hope that this will douse the fear in the mind of people and that the military presence will build confidence and we hope that their presence will help in confronting the attackers, especially with the added surveillance aircraft.

“We also know that this is a harvest period for farmers so we are asking the traditional rulers and community leaders to arrange with security operatives to plan how soldiers and police drafted in these areas will provide cover for farmers to go and harvest their crops.

“Our royal highnesses, I want to let you know that drafting security men alone will not give us the desired peace we want, except people are ready to tolerate and embrace one another, as well as choosing the path of forgiveness and unity.”

Alhaji Shehu Idiris said the council condemned the cycle of killings and reprisals in parts of southern Kaduna  describing them as senseless and inhuman.

The council appealed to security agencies and government to urgently tackle hate speech, divisive rhetoric and incitement.

“Killings and counter killings are senseless and ungodly; they are not solution to any problem.  It is quite disheartening and worrisome. We must work hard against these threats to our peace and unity,” the leader of the delegation said.
