Trump and North Korea leader to hold ‘milestone’ meeting

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un and United States President, Donald Trump, are to meet in person as early as May, it has been announced, an extraordinary overture after months of mutual hostility.

News of the meeting was delivered by South Korean officials after talks with Mr. Trump at the White House, the BBC reports.

They passed a verbal message from Mr. Kim, saying the North Korean leader was “committed to denuclearisation.”

South Korea’s President, Moon Jae-in, said the news “came like a miracle.”

“If President Trump and Chairman Kim meet following an inter-Korean summit, complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula will be put on the right track in earnest,” he said.

China has welcomed the development, saying the Korean peninsula issue was “heading in the right direction” and calling for “political courage.”

However, the BBC says the North has halted missile and nuclear tests during previous talks, only to resume them when it lost patience or felt it was not getting what it demanded.

The latest announcement came days after the South Korean delegation met Mr. Kim in Pyongyang.

Speaking outside the White House after briefing Mr. Trump, South Korean National Security Adviser, Chung Eui-yong, said he had passed on a message that Mr. Kim was “committed to denuclearisation” and had “pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests.”

North Korea leader ‘wants closer ties’ with South

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has said he wants to “vigorously advance” closer ties with South Korea, according to state media.

The report followed a rare visit to Pyongyang by senior South Korean officials, who had dinner with the normally reclusive leader, the BBC reports.

They are the first officials from Seoul to meet Mr. Kim since he came to power.

It’s part of a fast-moving wave of rapprochement on the Korean peninsula surrounding the Winter Olympics.

South Korea has only commented briefly on the meeting, saying the two sides had reached a “satisfactory agreement” on holding future talks.

The delegation is expected to visit Washington later this week to brief United States officials on their talks in the North.

The U.S has said it is “cautiously optimistic” about improving North-South contacts, but ruled out formal talks with Pyongyang unless it is ready to give up its nuclear weapons.

Throughout the Olympics the U.S maintained that North Korean gestures of rapprochement would carry little weight without such a commitment.

  • …of friends and friendships on campus

…of friends and friendships on campus

    “I don’t really miss people.”

“Are you joking? What about those times you say, especially to the female friends of yours that you miss them.”

“I only said that to keep the conversation going. I don’t really mean them, not that I deceive them though.”

That’s a candid expression by Tunji, a six-month old graduate of the University of Ibadan when he was asked about his friends back in school and if he missed them.

That brings to mind the true worth or value of campus friendship. Is it just meant to stop in the campus or probably after some days after the whole campus thing?

So many people are friends simply because of a circumstance or situation. Oh, she has a material and I need it, so let me ensure that we are on talking terms before I ask her about it. Then afterwards what happens, nothing!

“I see now that most of the friends I made then were just because of the situation at hand. Now I can’t say I have friends, though I thought I had some in school. It’s as if I will always make friends and dump them. If possible, I wouldn’t even make any at all, ” Tunji said.

You may not have seen any sense in what am saying. Just take a hike and think about your friends now, definitely something brought you together, what then happens when what brought you together elapses? Chasm?

Don’t you think you can feel the same way Tunji is feeling now? Or you are the real culprit of the menace.

Someone thoughtfully said that no one goes to the opposite direction of where his or her friends are headed. What happens when you don’t even have friends, when you are alone as Tunji perceived himself to be, what direction would you go?

“I know I need friends but am just tired of momentary friends, especially the female friends. They never reach out to one first, I don’t know if they thought I would take them for granted if they do.” Tunji continued.

I know the number of times I have complained about my friends not doing anything to keep our friendship, especially the females. Even the guys too sometimes are the same. Some would even say they are busy and I will be like, so I’m the jobless one.

No friendship can last if only one party contributes to its survival. We all need friends, and we mostly need them under some circumstances, but what about when the circumstance is off, no more friendship?

“What even makes me angry at myself sometimes and makes me feel I’m selling myself cheap is when I have no rest of mind if I haven’t called someone I remember I have spoken to for a long time. I don’t have peace until I call the person and that to me is a punishment for a crime I didn’t commit. I wonder if they ever felt that way too.” He lamented.

Friendship is so important that we can’t overemphasize it. It is the fabric that holds this world together. No two true friends will ever act in order to make the other fall. Assume that Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump are friends, no one will ever abuse the other. There wouldn’t be an old or a short and fat person.

If making friends is easy but keeping them a bit hard, then it’s time we focused on keeping, not just making to meet our immediate need.

Take out time to reach out to friends, you may be hurting someone if you don’t. Never say you are busy to call, it costs nothing to take out one minute to say Hi. Start today!

North Korea: 2 women plead not guilty to killing leader’s half-brother

Two women accused of assassinating the estranged half-brother of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un with a banned nerve agent pleaded not guilty at the start of a high-profile murder trial in a Malaysian court on Monday.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, a Vietnamese, are charged with killing Kim Jong Nam by smearing his face with VX, a chemical poison banned by the United Nations, at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport on Feb. 13.

Police have also named four North Koreans as suspects in the case and an Interpol red notice, an international alert just short of an arrest warrant, has been issued for the North Koreans, who remain at large.

Prosecutors said the four North Koreans helped the accused women carry out several practice runs in Kuala Lumpur shopping malls.

“The prank practice carried out by the first and second accused with the supervision of the four who are still at large was preparation to see through their common intention to kill the victim,” the prosecution said in its charge sheet.

Defense lawyers demanded that the prosecution immediately name the four other suspects, who have also been charged, so they could prepare their case.

“The charge must be clear,” said Siti Aisyah’s lawyer, Gooi Soon Seng.

Judge Azmi Ariffin dismissed their request.

Both women wore bullet-proof vests as they were led into the court on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital. They face the death penalty if convicted.

The two women nodded their heads when the charges were read out to them by two interpreters in the Shah Alam court on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital. The interpreters said both women pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution said their actions showed “intent to kill the victim” by smearing his face and eyes with VX nerve agent, which a post-mortem confirmed had killed Kim.

The women told their lawyers they did not know they were participating in a deadly attack and believed they were carrying out a prank for a reality TV show.

The two women sat quietly during the opening day of the trial. Siti was dressed in a black floral suit, while Huong wore a white long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans. The courtroom was packed with embassy officials and media.

Juliana Idris, who works at the airport, told the court a man later identified as Kim Jong Nam approached her and asked her to take him to a police station. Kim later went to the airport clinic but died there within 20 minutes.

She said the man, who spoke English, told her he had been “attacked by a woman from behind … another one closed his eyes”.

“His hands were shaking a bit, I don’t know why,” she said.

Police Lance Corporal Mohd Zulkarnain Sanudin, who was on duty at the Kuala Lumpur International airport on the day of the killing, said Idris had brought Kim Jong Nam to him.

He said Kim told him a substance had been wiped on his face. Kim’s eyes were red and he could see some liquid on his face, Zulkarnain said.

He also said the he had wrongly recorded Kim Jong Nam’s nationality as South Korean.

“The police report I made showed the nationality as South Korean, while on the passport, it was written DPR Korea, whereby I did not know what DPR meant. I was only sure that Korea was South Korea,” he told the court.

DPRK is the acronym for North Korea’s official name, the Democratic Republic of North Korea.

Trump, North Korean leader in hot exchange

North Korea leader, Kim Jong-un, has said remarks by United States President, Donald Trump, have convinced him he is right to develop weapons for his country.

In an unprecedented personal statement, Mr. Kim said Mr. Trump would “pay dearly” for a United Nations speech where he threatened to “totally destroy” the North Korea if the U.S was forced to defend itself.

Mr. Trump responded that the “madman will be tested like never before.”

The two countries have engaged in ever more heated rhetoric in recent months, the BBC reports.

Mr. Kim ended his statement by saying he would “surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged U.S dotard with fire.”

China responded to the war of words, warning that the situation was “complicated and sensitive.

“All relevant parties should exercise restraint instead of provoking each other,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lu Kang.

Russia also urged restraint. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was “deeply concerned by an escalation of tensions”.

Nigeria’s 4-0 first leg win over Cameroon in the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers, dominated searches this week on Google.

Google’s spokesman Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade made the announcement in a dispatch to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

According to Kola-Ogunlade, this week’s top trending search terms on Google range from sports to celebrity news.

He said that sports-loving Nigerians got excited over the Eagles’ performance against their counterparts in the qualifiers.

The Eagles are now leading their group with 10 points from matches played so far.

“Their 4-0 win over Cameroon on Friday and 1-1 draw by the Lions of Cameroon on Monday has gotten fans, sport experts, coaches and speculators predicting that the Super Eagles might qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“Excited fans raced to Google search to get more details about upcoming matches for the qualifiers.”

Kola-Ogunlade said that the American professional tennis player, Serena Williams, who was reported to have given birth to a baby girl on Sep. 1 also attracted searches on Google.

He said that the announcement of Serena’s first child with fiancé, Alexis Ohanian, was made by reporter Chris Shepherd via Twitter.

“Though the couple have not officially announced the birth, the tennis star’s fans and celebrity friends have since taken to Google to share their congratulatory messages.”

The Google manager said that concerned Nigerians also searched Google to read more about the distressing news of the North Korea missile test.

“North Korean President Kim Jong-un was pictured during yet another round of nuclear missiles testing over the weekend.

“The images have sparked tension in South Korea, the U.S. and Europe.

“Han Tae Song, the Ambassador of North Korea to the UN, the North Korean Supreme Leader vowed to send more “gift packages” to the U.S.,” said Kola-Ogunlade

The Google image maker said that American singer, songwriter and actress Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, turned 36 on Sept. 4.

“The pop star celebrated her birthday in spectacular fashion by starting an awareness campaign to support hurricane relief efforts in her hometown, Houston.

“Beyoncé, wearing one of the iconic outfits from her “Formation” video, shared images of her friends and family on her website.

“Beneath the images was a message and link asking fans to support the Hurricane Harvey disaster relief efforts.

“While Nigerian Beyhive’s congratulated and commended the singer for the effort, others criticised her, which made Nigerians interested in the debate go to Google to get the full gist.”

  • North Korea accuses U.S of planning to kill Kim Jong-un

North Korea has accused United States and South Korean agents of plotting to kill its Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un.

A North Korean referred to only as “Kim” was paid to carry out an attack with biochemical substances, the ministry of state security said.

The plot was foiled, it said, but gave no details on the fate of “Kim.”

The CIA declined to comment and South Korea has issued no statement so far, the BBC reports.

The North’s claim comes amid continued high tension on the Korean peninsula.

U.S President Donald Trump has promised to “solve” North Korea and stop it from developing nuclear weapons.

The ministry of state security statement, carried by state news agency KCNA, said the CIA and South Korean intelligence services had “hatched a vicious plot to hurt the supreme leadership of the DPRK.”

It did not mention Kim Jong-un by name, but he is widely referred to as the supreme leader.

N/Korea accuses U.S. of plot to assassinate president

North Korea is accusing the United States of America (USA) and South Korean of a joint plot to kill its leader, Kim Jong-un, according to state media report.

The ministry of state security said a terrorist group backed by the CIA and South Korea’s intelligence agency had entered the country to attack Kim with a bio-chemical substance.

It said North Korea would find and “mercilessly destroy” the terrorists.

It comes amid high tensions in the region.

North Korean news agency KCNA claimed the alleged plot included the use of “biochemical substances including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance”.

The Supreme Leader would have been targeted at a military parade and public procession, with the results not visible for six to 12 months afterwards, it said.

It alleged that a North Korean, identified only by the surname “Kim”, had been “corrupted and bribed” by South Korean intelligence services while he was working in Russia.

It listed several payments made to him, and said on his return to Pyongyang he was instructed to provide detailed information about a frequently used event ground and to assess possible methods of attack.

“Korean-style anti-terrorist attack will be commenced from this moment to sweep away the intelligence and plot-breeding organisations of the U.S. imperialists and the puppet clique,” Pyongyang said.

A war of words between the West and North Korea has escalated in recent weeks, with the communist enclave   threatening to carry out a sixth nuclear test.

A week ago, North Korea conducted its second failed ballistic missile test in two weeks.

The U.S. has sent a warship to the region and installed a controversial anti-missile defence system in South Korea.

  • Trump willing to meet North Korean leader

United States President, Donald Trump, has said he would be “honoured” to meet North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, in the right circumstances.

“If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would – absolutely. I would be honoured to do it,” the BBC quoted the U.S President as saying to Bloomberg on Monday.

The previous day he described Mr. Kim as a “pretty smart cookie.”

The comments come amid escalating tensions over North Korea’s nuclear programme.

The White House issued a statement following Mr. Trump’s remarks, saying North Korea would need to meet many conditions before any meeting between the two leaders could take place.

Spokesman Sean Spicer said Washington wanted to see the North end its provocative behaviour immediately.

“Clearly conditions are not there right now,” he added.
