Kanu’s kinsman seeks his repatriation from UK to face trial

For fear that Nnamdi Kanu’s sureties may be held responsible should he fail to return for his trial, a Federal High Court in Abuja has been asked to compel the Federal Government to have him brought back to the country.

The request is contained in a suit filed on October 5 by an indigene of Abia State, Ugochukwu Kenneth, through his lawyers Obor John and Tersagh Unande.

Named as de?fendants are:  the British High Commission, the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

Kanu and some other member of his defunct group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), are being tried before Justice Binta Nyako (also of the Federal High Court, Abuja) for alleged treason.

The court granted only Kanu bail on health grounds on April 25. In meeting the bail conditions, three individuals, including Senator Eyinanaya Abaribe, stood surety for Kanu to guarantee that he would attend court until the trial is concluded.

But in a suit filed in his name on September 26, also before the Federal High Court in Abuja, his lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, accused the Army of abducting Kanu.

Ejiofor stated, among others, that Kanu had not been seen since some soldiers invaded his home on September 14, during which shots were fired and people allegedly died. Some were injured, he said.

Kanu’s lawyer’s claim about his whereabouts was, however, countered in an interview by former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, who said Kanu had escaped to Britain through Malaysia.

The plaintiff in the fresh suit, Uguchukwu Kenneth, agreed with the ex-governor’s position on Kanu’s whereabouts and requested that the NIS be compelled to repatriate him to enable him face his trial, which is expected to resume on October 17.

Kanneth stated, in a supporting affidavit, that “Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, representing the good people of Abia South Senatorial District of Abia State; Tochukwu Uchendu and Jewish Chief High Priest Immanuel -El Shalom Oka-Ben Madu perfected the bail bond which facilitated the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Upon the perfection of the bail and consequent released of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from prison custody, Mazi Kanu has, to the best of my knowledge, breached all the bail conditions to wit; granting press interviews while on bail, participating in any rally, or being found in a crowd of more than ten persons in the course of the bail.

The case has been assigned to Justice John Tsoho. It is fixed for October 12 for its first mention.

  • How Evans derailed, by dad, kinsman

How Evans derailed, by dad, kinsman

IN the sleepy village of Inyaba in Akamili area of Nnewi town, Anambra State, the arrest of kidnap kingpin, Chukwudi Dumeme Onwuamadike aka Evans has brought shame to his family and kinsmen. His father, Stephen Onwuamadike, who relocated to the community after his business empire collapsed in 1985 after he was defrauded, battles poverty. The fair-complexioned Onwuamadike told The Nation that since he suffered a reversal of fortune about 32 years ago, he had gone through the pains and agony of suffering without any form of help from anywhere.

The only thing sustaining him for now, he disclosed, is a small poultry business in his compound. Narrating his son’s upbringing to The Nation in his residence tucked behind Immanuel Anglican Church, Evans’ father said he was the youngest millionaire in Nnewi before his business misfortune. He said people like Innocent Chukwuma (Innoson group) were using their pick-up vans to pick goods from his warehouse located inside his compound, where he was storing motor-spare parts back in the days. “I used to go to Japan, Singapore, Germany, London, Korea among other countries to import generating sets and motorcycle spare parts. I found myself in this condition in 1985 when I was duped by 419ners(fraudsters) from Aba in Port Harcourt.

“I built this house in 1984; by that time, this my son Chukwudi (aka – Evans) was only three years old. I took them to many places to give them the good things of life. The problem of that boy started with his mother in 1986 when I started having problems with her and she was junketing from pillar to post. “Chukwudi my son was enrolled in good schools from nursery to secondary.

I put him in Merchant of Light Boys High school in Oba Before then, he had gone through Summit Nursery School to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School in Awka. I removed him from those schools when I noticed that the mother was visiting him because I did not want her to infect him with bad spirit” He said his wife Chinwe, 50, left his house in 1986 leaving her four children behind, with his mother, Margret Onwuamadike, 78. He explained further that Evans’ mother later came back to his house two years later.

He said that when his son left Oba Boys Secondary school (Merchant of Light) after two years, he did all he could to persuade him to further his studies to no avail. He said: “My son (Evans) insisted that he would trade in spare parts and I made arrangement with Cosmas Maduka, through his elder brother, to take him to Lagos, but the boy later rejected the plan, not knowing that he was being negatively teleguided. “But in 1998, I left Nnewi for Lagos and I was living at Ikotun and started worshipping at T.B Joshua’s church, Synagogue, and when the boy came to me, I gave him money to go back to Nnewi after he found his way to Lagos where he said he had started learning a trade “So, in 2005 again, he called me that he wanted to marry and I asked him how manage, because I was aware that he was not doing anything tangible, but he told me not to bother, that he needed my presence, which I obliged him.

“Chukwudi Onwuamadike who is being paraded as a kidnapper is my first son; there are other 10 of my children; eight boys and three girls, they were to be 12 but one died. “After his marriage in 2005, he moved back to Lagos with the wife and since 11 years, my brother, I will tell you that I don’t know his whereabouts. “The only person who can tell you in and out of his movement, his connections and his dealings is his mother (Chinwe) because they are always discussing on phone and he does not call me.

“Anytime he wanted to call me, he would hide his phone number or any time his mother would be around, he would instruct his mother to give me her phone for me to answer. “I met him in 2006 when I went for prayers at TB Joshua’s church (in Lagos). the last time I set my eyes on him was in 2012 during the birthday party of Prophet T.B Joshua in Lagos and I asked him what he was doing, he told me he was dealing in drugs. “My son was a nice young man before he came under strange influences.”

However, he said if Evans was released, he would be the happiest father. According to him, “he is still my son, blood is thicker than water. Since I was told about this incident on Monday by some people, I have not been sleeping and I have refused to allow my old mother to know about it because she would die immediately;” Stephen Onwumadike narrated. Also speaking with The Nation, the Obi of Akamili, 81- year-old Edwin Oduonye, who could not stomach what he called the insult brought on them by their son, slumped on his seat and started crying like a baby. It took the reporter some minutes to calm him down, but he managed to clean his eyes and told The Nation that the boy was nice when he was growing up.

The old man popularly known as (Nnanyelugo), said his late wife was the younger sister to the wife of the late Onwuamadike. “He was a good boy when he was a child, but I believe that he derailed when he started mixing with bad groups. “This is painful because the boy in question is from my domain and Nnewi at large. Our people are not known for something like this; they are hardworking people. “I have never seen such a thing before, only God can adjudicate on an issue like this.

The present condition has not only put his family in confusion but the entire Nnewi clan. Whether dead or alive, he has brought shame to our people,” Oduonye said. Also, 38-year-old Ezenwa Oduonye, who resides in Guinea, told The Nation that the arrest of Evans was a shocking news to them. He said when he knew Chukwudi (aka- Evans), he was learning spare parts in Lagos, adding that they had never communicated on phone or seen each other in the last nine years. Another community leader in the village Chinaedum Obanye told The Nation that what the man did in Lagos was a taboo in Nnewi kingdom. He said the people of Nnewi were not known for things like kidnapping or armed robbery, adding: “Whatever you sow, you shall reap”.

  • Community hails Buhari on kinsman’s NDDC job

The people of Obibor Asa community in Ukwa West council area of Abia state have given kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari for making their son Chief Nwogu Nnah Nwogu a commissioner on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board.

The people also expressed their thanks to Chief Ikechi Emenike for making it possible for their son to be nominated and presented to Mr President for appointment as NDDC commissioner.

Speaking at Umukabia Ohuhu in Umuahia North council area of the state, the country home of Emenike during a thank you visit to him, the leader of the group, Mr Chinwe Uruakpa, an engineer, said that the present administration has wiped away their tears with the gesture.

Uruakpa said that what President Buhari has done by appointing their son as one of the NDDC commissioners has put a stop to the suffering of their people which has been going on for several years.

He explained that God in his mysterious ways used a man who they do not know (Chief Emenike) to make it possible for them to smile again, stressing that this man from nowhere decided to project their son despite all odds.

The Obibor Asa leader said, “It is on that note that the entire people of Obibor Asa community left their homes to thank Chief Emenike for what God has used him to do for us even no one expected our so Nwogu to be the nominee”.

“There were several people with better academic qualifications and the financial muscle who were lobbying for the position but you told us that you did not spend any money to place our son where he is right now”.

“This wonderful gesture of yours has shown us that you love the people of Asa area of the state and we want to assure you that this good deed that you have done for us will not be forgotten and we will pay you back when the time and need arise” .

In his own speech Anselm Eletuo the youth leader of the community said that they came to thank him for making the change mantra of the APC to come to their place when no one has ever remembered them in the scheme of things in the state.

Eletuo said, “Sir if not for God using a person like you we would still be where we have been all these years as nobody would have remembered our place and son for such an appointment”.

“We want to assure you of our total support in any endeavour you would want to venture into in future and also assure President Buhari of the support of our people at all times, we urged you to tell him not to relent in doing good for the people of the country”.

“We had always insisted that the NDDC commissioner comes from our place as we produce 90% of the crude oil that makes the state to be a member of the NDDC states, yet we have never been reckoned with in the scheme of things in the state”.

Responding, Emenike said that it is special blessing from God that when you go to a community one will be able to see good people like Nwogu who everyone will accept when an opportunity like this comes up.

Emenike thanked the people for coming to appreciate his little effort in ensuring that their son is appointed into the board of NDDC, “But I would rather you thank and appreciate President Buhari who made it possible as I was only the facilitator and not the one who appointed him”.

He reminded them that the law that established NDDC made it clear that appointments into their board should come from the oil producing community and not anybody from outside such community.

The Abia APC leader said that Nwogu who is now a member of the NDDC board from the state deserved the appointment and that when the appointment issue came up that people Nwogu never believed that he would be nominated not to talk about appointing him.

Emenike noted that during the lobbying time that many people who were not from the oil producing community, “Were brought to me to be presented to Mr President for the appointment, but I insisted that NDDC board member must come from Asa community”.

He said, “When Nwogu came with a Prof to present to me I ask him why can’t he be appointed and he answered that he has only his school certificate and I told him that many people in the country are where they are today with less qualification”.

“After he was nominated a lot of petitions came against him saying that he is nobody and I told them that the only qualification required for the appointment is that he hails from the oil producing community of Asa and that killed such petitions”.

“I want to plead with the youths of Asa not to put too much pressure and to much expectations from him as he will not empower everyone at the same time, just give him time and all the wrongs will be corrected”.

Emenike described Nwogu as a very humble man saying that he brought about four different people to him for consideration for the post be is right now occupying but I insisted that he must be the one for the post.

The community presented Emenike with such gifts as crude oil, palm oil, a copy of the Bible and assorted drinks in appreciation of what he has done for them. They urged him to present the crude oil to Mr President as it is what comes from their area.

  • Tompolo, kinsman trade accusations over pipelines bombings

Tompolo, kinsman trade accusations over pipelines bombings

Embattled former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta Chief Government Ekpemupolo has disavowed threats to attack oil facilities in the Niger Delta.

Some groups recently vowed to resume attacks on oil facilities, unless the EFCC drops fraud  charges against Tompolo.

But Tompolo not only dissociated himself from the threats and links with the groups, he fingered one of his opponents as the mastermind.

Speaking through his media consultant , Comrade Paul Bebenimibo, Tompolo “unequivocally dissociates himself from this threat as he did not send anyone to attack oil facilities in the Niger Delta region because of his case with the EFCC”.

He fingered his kinsman and an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Chief Michael Johnny as being behind the allegation.

The allegation, he noted,  ”is coming two days after one Michael Johnny accused Tompolo in a television programme, ‘State of the Nation’, of being behind the bombing of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region.

“Information at the disposal of security agencies indicates that a suspect in their custody had confessed that Michael Johnny sent him (the suspect) to bomb oil facilities.

Tompolo said he has instructed his lawyers to sue Johnny for “malicious damage”.

“Tompolo has said in many occasions that he would not resort to violence and bombing of oil facilities because of his case with the EFCC.”

However, in a telephone conversation with our reporter, Chief Johnny, who is chairman of the Egbema/Gbaramatu Communities Development Council, insisted that Tompolo was culpable, daring him to turn himself to the security agencies  to refute the allegations.

He said: “Tompolo is behind the bombings; he has been deceiving Mr President that he is the only one that can call the boys (militants) to order.

“Security operatives will confirm what I am telling you and everybody knows. I am a Gbaramatu man. I cannot destroy my own community for any reason.

“He wants to bomb his way out of problem.

“All those arrested in connection with the bombing are his boys; even the one who is now claiming as the person who accused me was his commander that has been used to threaten my life in the past,” Johnny added.

Besides, Johnny noted that he had no reason to cripple an APC government, stressing that even while he was in opposition against the past PDP administration he did not attack oil facilities to make his points

“The antecedent of Tompolo would confirm that he is known to create problem to benefit from it. This has now become an APC/PDP problem. They want to cripple the APC-led government,” Jojnny added.

  • Youths attack Imo community over kinsman’s death

Angry youths on Christmas eve attacked Umuochi village in Ihitte, Ngor–Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, following the death of their kinsman, Ikechi Eke.

The deceased was allegedly stabbed to death by Obinna Opara, who was said to be from neighbouring Umuochi village.

The youths from Umuohie village, it was learnt, invaded the neighbouring village to avenge the death of their kinsman.

The youths, it was learnt, torched the home of the suspected killer.

They were also said to have invaded the homes of other villagers and destroyed their homes and property.

A resident of Umuochi, Mr. Mike Nkwocha, said nobody expected what happened.

He said the villagers were preparing for Christmas when the incident occurred.

According to him, there was pandemonium in the village following the youths’ invasion.

Nkwocha added: “About 8pm, the late Ikechi Eke, who had attended a social function in Umuochi, was accosted by the murder suspect and an argumen ensued. It led to a fight.”

The villager explained that passersby settled the squabble.

He said nobody knew the suspect had gone home to take a dagger.

The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim to death.

Nkwocha said it was the cry from Ikechi that attracted the villagers to the scene.

    Opara allegedly went into hiding.

But Ikechi’s kinsmen stormed Umuochi, looking for Opara, who was said to have fled the village.

The Umuohie youths reportedly began the search for the suspected killer in the homes of the villagers.

Opara was reportedly apprehended by his kinsmen yesterday when he wanted to board a Lagos-bound bus.

Efforts to reach police spokesman Vitalis Onugu on the matter were unsuccessful.

He did not answer his calls.
