  • Recent APC victory is sign of things to come -Buhari

…Says APC will win 2019 elections

President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura on Friday said that the string of victory recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in bye-elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi States is sufficient proof that 2019 elections will be won by the party.

He spoke while receiving the representatives of the 34 Chairmen of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Katsina State.

Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said: “coming against the backdrop of the victory in Ekiti governorship election, the string of victory by our party, the APC, is a clear indication of the way things will go in 2019.

‘‘For those who are discerning; those who have ears and eyes they will see, hear and understand. Those who don’t understand are entitled to their mistaken assumptions.” he said

Buhari, therefore, emphasized that the victories in the recent polls are indeed “the sign of things to come.”

He thanked the leaders of the association for paying Sallah homage to him and for their message of congratulations on the performance of the party and the administration, assuring them that he would continue to do his best for the nation.

Speaking on behalf of the members, the Chairman of ALGON in the State, Alhaji Mohammed Na’Allah, expressed their support and commitment to the success of the Buhari Administration.

At another meeting with the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Katsina State, President Buhari expressed his continued determination to respect the diversity of the country, saying that he will run a government that is fair and just to all Nigerians.

The President thanked the CAN leadership in the State for living in peace and harmony with other religious groups, and for supporting his administration in its policies and programmes

The CAN leaders who spoke during the visit, the State Chairman, Rev. Nelson Onyeakachukwu, and an elder and coordinator of the Christian Pilgrimage in the State, Haruna Danjuma expressed happiness with the President’s performance.

They described him as the State’s good ambassador who had made everyone proud.

“Christians in Katsina are happy with both Governor Masari in the State and yourself at the center. We will continue to support both of you,” the CAN leaders told the President.

  • Bauchi, Katsina, Kogi: APC waxing stronger, says Presidency

The Presidency is celebrating the victories of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in last weekend’s election.

The APC won senatorial bye-elections in Katsina and Bauchi states and a House of Representatives seat in Kogi State.

Briefing State House correspondents, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, described the victories as an indication that President Muhammadu Buhari and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo have a better chance in next year’s election.

He also faulted the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for carrying out its actions in a militant manner rather than following laid down procedures.

Shehu said: “I like to speak to you about the fabulous shows of the APC in Katsina, Bauchi and Kogi, and even to some extent in Cross River states. All of these coming against the background of Ekiti State.

“It is clear that from election after election, Nigerians are reposing confidence in the Buhari/Osinbajo presidency. Each of these election victories is considered to be epic in nature because none of these elections was an ordinary election.

“We are happy that we have won and on behalf of the President and the Acting President, we’ll like to say thank you to Nigerians who continue to repose their confidence in the leadership of the APC administration.

“We also want to thank the leadership of the party at the national level, but equally important, to thank all the party’s apparatchiks deployed to all the campaigns who ensured that all the elections were won handsomely by APC.

“So, we are expressing our gratitude to everyone for these that had happened and to say that with this increasing confidence reposed in the President and the Acting President, who are determined more than ever before to leave no stone unturned in order to bring the promised change to Nigerians.”

“For a quick review, maybe one, two, three or four lessons can be taken from the victories that the party has been recording.

“First of all is to say that these decisive victories are indications that clearly, Nigerians have spoken that President Buhari maintains his momentum. That these victories place Buhari/Osinbajo presidency in very good stead for next year’s election.” he added

Advising the National Assembly, Shehu said: “It is a statement of the fact that the APC will go into election next year with every confidence that the elections will be won and that Nigerians, by this statement, will also  say that they no longer have time for politics of insult and diversion, mudslinging and ‘monkey dey work, baboon dey chop’ politics of the PDP, and equally important is that these election victories are a clear message to the National Assembly that all that Nigerians are interested in is that the business of government should go on.

“That Nigerians are saying that they are not interested in the drama; they are not interested in the grammar, the subterfuge and all of the games that are being played in the National Assembly.

“I think it is appropriate this time to appeal to the National Assembly to be on the same page with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration so that we can deliver on all of these things. There are urgent matters that need to be attended to, including matters of shortfall in money supply for the execution of the budget.”

Urging the opposition party to desist from operating like a militant organisation, Shehu said: “Secondly, I think that it is not the right attitude for a political party, a so-called opposition leader to conduct their affairs like a militant organisation , a political party cannot be run like a militant organization. If you have disagreement on the outcome of an election, they know the process and they know it because they abused it before. You can see this is the clear difference of the kind of democracy the APC administration is trying to put in place from what they are used to.

“Willie Obiano of Anambra, same afternoon President Buhari said congratulations and welldone, we were happy we came second in the elections, that is the way it is. We lost a Senate seat in Osun, we didn’t try to bring down the roof, and this that has happened in Cross River, did you hear Adams Oshiomhole say he wanted to shoot people? I think this is the difference we need.”

Shehu also charged Nigerians who are raising allegations of votes buying during the bye-elections to help the law enforcement agencies with the information.

“One is to say that bribery of voters or vote buying is an offence in this country, I think that citizens who have evidence regarding this have a duty to report to the law enforcement agencies. This is the way to help the country,” Shehu said.

The APC also in a statement by its acting publicity secretary Yekini Nabena, said: “The hat-trick victories following weekend’s by-elections for Katsina North; Bauchi South Senatorial seats and the Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat have again powerfully demonstrated the confidence and trust by our people in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“While we thank the electorate for coming out enmasse to vote for our candidates in the weekend by-elections, we also congratulate Hon. Ahmed Babba-Kaita (Katsina); Hon. Lawal Yahaya Gumau (Bauchi) and Haruna Isa (Kogi) on their victories.

“Since assuming office, President Buhari has demonstrated the political will and remains solidly committed to the task of building a new Nigeria in line with the Change Agenda we promised to the electorate and the progressive ideals we stand for.

“As a political party, we remain genuinely committed to address our challenges, reconcile legitimately aggrieved interests and emerge as a more united and stronger political fighting force as we face General Elections in 2019.

“Like every other country, we have our challenges, but they are surmountable. We have an administration working day and night to surmount them and put the country on the right pedestal. With the continued cooperation and support of Nigerians, we have good reason to look forward to the future with great hope.”

  • Kogi Youths Endorse Prince Audu For Senate

A non partisan interest group, Kogi Youth Advocates of Good Governance, KYGG, has endorsed the younger brother of the late former Governor of Kogi state, Prince Yahaya Audu to contest as Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District in the next election.

Delegates of KYGG made the request when they paid a solidarity visit to the palace of the paramount ruler of Igala Kingdom, Attah of Igala, HRH Ameh Oboni the II and HRH, Alhaji Tijani Audu the Orego Attah / District Head Ogbonicha who is also a member of the family.

Briefing journalists after the visit in Lokoja on Sunday, the convener of the forum, Comrade Jerry Ochada said there is an urgent need to compensate the Audu’s family to ensure political harmony in the state.

According to him the forum is poised to agitate for justice for the dissatisfied and marginalised people across the state.

He urged the incumbent leadership of Kogi state to remember the legacies of the former governor, Prince Abubakar Audu by immortalising his dreams.

    The statement reads in part:

“KYGG is a credible mouthpiece preaching the absolute engagements of good governance and political compensation when and where necessary.

“In line with KYGG ideology of promoting justice and fairness for all, we have deliberated on the lingering poltical abnormalities trending sour in Kogi state.

“In our thorough research and assessments, we keenly observed that every region in Kogi state is fighting to curb the ugly menace of marginalisation, oppression, political intimidation and the negative inclinations of political supremacy.

“This is not a good development especially for our nascent democracy and it is gradually denting the political history of Kogi state.

“To this end, this is an ample time for Kogites to unite by burying their differences in preparation for the next General Election, which we anticipate to be free and fair. However, the burden lies on the peaceful political atmosphere that MUST be established before the poll.

“For justice and fairness to prevail in the affairs of Kogi Politics, the winner of the November 22 2015 election, Prince Abubakar Audu’s family MUST be compensated in no distant time to ensure a level playing ground.

“The forum also resolved to task and support the emergence of the leader of Audu Oyidi’s family, Prince Yahaya Audu to contest for the position of Senator, representing the good people of Kogi East in the hallowed chamber.

“The group further seek to advice that the best way to immortalise the political legacies of the fallen hero, Prince Abubakar Audu is to unite efforts to ensure that a credible candidate like Prince Yahaya Audu who has displayed rare leadership qualities of unity and peace-co-existence amongst all political affiliations in the state is supported to make the late Prince Abubakar Audu proud of his legacies and service to the people of Kogi East Senatorial District,” he said.

It will be recalled that Prince Abubakar Audu died at the verge of winning the 2015 election in Kogi state.

  • FG to take delivery of N10.7bn rice mill Dec 2019

The Federal Government has said the N10.7 billion integrated rice milling machines procured by the Federal Government will be delivered in December, 2019.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed this Monday at the pact signing with MV Agro Engineers, suppliers of the farm equipment, in Abuja.

Ogbeh explained that the benefiting states would indicate interest as off-takers, make 10 percent down payment and express technical capacity to own and operate a mill.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) in April approved N10.7bn for the establishment of 10 new rice mills in the six geopolitical zones.

The 10 participating states include Kaduna, Anambra, Kogi, Benue, Bayelsa, Niger, and Bauchi. Others are Kebbi, Ogun, Zamfara while the mills are expected to produce 100 tons of rice per day.

The Bank of Agriculture (BoA) is expected to take over the loan repayment in the next 10 years.

“As these people arrive, they will install these mills and the BoA will take over the loans repayment over a period of 10 years,” Ogbeh said.

Asked if the 18 months deadline could be reviewed upward, the minister noted that, “building machines is not cheap. It’s a scientific thing. These people say they may do it faster but we give them 18 months, so there won’t be issues for delays.”

According to him, there are about 16 existing large rice mills from the already procured 100 mills.

The minister added that 16 large machines would mill 100 tons of rice paddy daily while others could mill about 300 tons daily.

“Dangote just brought in 10 milling machines which will produce 1 million tons of rice per annum but there are smaller ones we gave out, about 200 mills of 10 tons and 20 tons per annum operating in villages and small corners equipped with the stoners.

“We are buying smaller mills and giving them out because the smaller mills produce more rice than the big mills added up but they are scattered all over the country. Virtually every state has small rice mills somewhere, Niger, Bayelsa, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Ebonyi, Katsina and Jigawa,” he stated.

He commended the contractors advising them to supply adequate quality spare parts.

In his remarks, the Managing Director, Bank of Agriculture, Kabir Mohammed restated commitment to ensure the project is successful while meeting the delivery targets.

He said the project financing would not be a challenge.

The Managing Director, Jamu Babba Dan’agundi, leader of the delegation commended the federal government for the gesture.

He promised to deliver the machines as scheduled.

  • Kogi communities hail Dangote’s road initiative

The multiplier effect of having in place standard infrastructure, such as roads, was at the weekend espoused by some communities in Kogi State. These communities, located on the 43-kilometre long Obajana-Kabba road in Kogi State under construction, were upbeat at the prospect the road will bring to their settlement upon completion.

Markets and commercial activities are now springing up and booming along the road as communities can easily transport their produce to consumers.  A yam trader at the Ayegunle  market, located on the reconstructed road, Mr. Muhammad Salihu, expressed satisfaction that the road is almost completed. He revealed that his yam business, which was in comatose before now, is now booming.

Basking in the euphoria of the commercial activities that have started springing up along the Obajana-Kabba road, traditional and community leaders of the once sleepy towns took turns to eulogise Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote for bringing “this massive road project in our land.”

For instance, the Bajana of Obajana Land, Oba Idowu Senibi, revealed that Obajana was like a village before the coming of Dangote Cement Plant. However, with the siting of the palnt in the community, it has grown the community’s population to about 70,000 residents, all eking a living from the activities in the plant. He added that the firm’s operations  have further raised the standard of living in the environment.

The royal father described the project as “gigantic and the first of its kind” anywhere in the country. “Dangote is our son. We would protect his huge investment and gigantic concrete road. I am happy that this is happening in my lifetime and in my Kingdom. This is a great opportunity for us and many generations to come. Our community will be opened; as you can see, vehicles and commercial activities have started coming up, so it is a boost for our community and economy,” the monarch said.

Corroborating Oba Senibi, Akpata Land traditional head, Frederick Durojaiye Balogun, said his people are very proud of project, adding that Dangote Cement plant in Obajana has brought honour and respect to their kingdoms. “Dangote’s presence has brought a total turnaround to our lives. Also, permit me to appreciate the Federal Government for this joint effort. We are very grateful,” he said.

Speaking in the same breath, Okebunku land traditional ruler in Kabba-Bunu Local Government, Timothy Omonile, while commending the company, urged other corporate bodies to emulate what the Group has done as it is the “only way Nigeria can develop its economy and infrastructure.”

Commuters were also not left out in the praise for the Dangote Group. A commercial driver, Adeniyi Adeniji, said he has been plying the road for several years. According to him, prior to the reconstruction works on the road, it commuters usually spent over two hours to ply the 43 km road, a journey which now takes them less than 45 minutes. This, he said, has improved people’s turnaround time, passengers’ comfort, and reduced vehicles’ wear and tear tremendously.

Ayegunle Igun Bunu Kabba Local Government youth leader, Albert Monday, expressed his group’s satisfaction  with the road, especially as accidents’and criminalities’ rate has reduced on the axis drastically.

Another resident, a Septuagenarian and retired Police officer, Mathew Robinson, could not hide his joy with the work done on the road. Pa Robinson, who resides at Kilometer 29 end of the road in Ayegunle Igun Bunu Kabba Local Government, expressed optimism that when the road is completed, kidnapping and armed robbery incidences will be completely wiped out in the region. “Even unborn babies are very happy and proud of this road now,” he added.

The Project Director, AG-Dangote Construction Company Limited, the firm handling the project, Olatunbosun Kalejaiye, explained that 29km of the road has so far been completed. He said the road project was part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) of Dangote Cement Plc.,  adding that the road will be delivered by December this year.

The Project Manager, Akhimienho Emmanuel, said when completed, the road can last for more than 50 years.

It would be recalled that Dangote had expressed concerns over the huge sum of money used in road repairs, hence, the decision to revolutionise Nigerian roads with rigid concrete pavement (concrete roads). He said once the concrete road revolution is in place, resources used in road repairs and maintenance would be channeled to other more important needs of the nation.

“We are going to be building concrete roads in the country so that anytime we build a road, we do not have to go back to repair after the third raining season, but move on and use the resources to address other pressing needs of Nigeria,” Dangote had said.

  • Reps to probe Abacha loot from 1998 to date

The House of Representatives is to investigate monies allegedly looted by late Gen Sani Abacha  but repatriated back to Nigeria from 1998 till date.

An ad hoc Committee mandated to carry out the assignment would be responsible for determining the source of the looted money as well as its utilisation till date.

In addition, the committee is to establish if and how much was paid to lawyers and consultants.

The House is also desirous of establishing if procedures were followed in the recovery or not,   in addition to identifying all agreements entered into by the country  and if the agreements were in accordance  with the constitution.

Though yet to be constituted, the ad hoc committee has six weeks to carry out the investigation.

This followed a stiff opposition by most of the lawmakers to Federal government’s decision to directly distribute the latest tranche of $322m Abacha loot among most vulnerable Nigerians.

The lawmakers were angered by an alleged agreement (which they were not privy to) with the Swiss government on how the money was to be utilised.

The lawmakers’ anger followed a motion of urgent national importance by Sunday Karimi  (PDP, Kogi), who said the Executive erred and breached the constitution by failing to remit the fund into the Consolidated Revenue Account  (CRA).

Karimi in his submission noted that the Transparency International (TI) estimated that about $ trillion public revenue was snatched abroad by late General between 1993-1998, when he ruled the country.

He said following a plea bargain with the government by Abacha family in 2014, the loots were forfeited to the Federal government in exchange for dropping of all charges against Abacha’s son.

He said: “These Funds have been released to the Federation in several tranches by Swistzerland Government but without much disclosure to the public by Government.

“Recently, the Attorney General of the Federation signed an Agreement on behalf of the Government of the Federation on the release of the last tranche of $322m belonging to Nigeria.

“The Special Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Justice Reforms, Juliet lbekaku-Nwagwu was reported to have said that in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Switzerland Government and the Nigerian Government, the $322m will be paid directly to the accounts of the poorest Nigerians without recourse to the National Assembly.

“By virtue of Section 12 (i) of the Constitution, no treaty between the Federal Government of Nigeria and any other country shall have the force of law except to the extent to which such treaty has been enacted by the National Assembly.

“Consequently, no Agreement or Memorandum of Understanding purportedly signed by the Federal Government with the Switzerland Government can have any force of law in Nigeria, except approved and enacted by the National Assembly.

“Cognizant that by virtue of Section 80(1-3) and 81 of the Constitution all revenue raised and received by the Federal Government shall be paid to the Consolidated Revenue Fund. Section 80(3) stipulates that no such monies raised shall be withdrawn from the CRF unless the issue of such funds has been authorised by the National Assembly.

“As a result, no monies can be paid or expended without National Assembly approval”.

Karimi implored his colleague to adopt his prayers as resolution of the House that the $322m to be released by the Switzerland Government be paid to the CRF and be distributed to the federating units in line with the current revenue sharing formula.

Also that the Federal Government should come up with a Supplementary Appropriation Bill, earmarking the funds due to it from the Abacha loot to the completion of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex Project.

In addition, that the Federal Executive should present to the National Assembly immediately, how much has been released from recovered loot and how they have been expended.

The prayers were discarded for Abdulmumnin Jubrin’s amendment that the loot be investigated from 1998 to date.

In their contributions, Uzoma Nkem-Abonta  (PDP, Abia), Sunday Adepoju (APC, Oyo), Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje  (PDP, Abia), Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta), Rita Orji (PDP, Lagos), Abubakar Adamu (APC, Niger) and Johnson Agbonayinma  (APC, Edo) argued that the money should be paid into the CRF and then be used for the completion of Ajaokuta Steel company.

They also argued that the agreement with the Swiss government was void and of no consequence as it was not endorsed by the National Assembly.

They also said the Swiss government has no right to dictate to Nigeria how to spend its money.

Kayode Oladele (APC, Ogun) cautioned that the Swiss agreement was not entirely out of place but that the fund should be routed to the CRF.

Ahmad Keita (APC, Katsina) disagreed with his opposing colleagues saying it was reported in the past that recovered loots were relooted whereby most Nigerians were denied benefits of the repatriated money.

He wondered why his colleagues were complaining about the decision of the Executive, saying , “The federal government is doing the right thing and people are shouting here.

“Agreements are agreement, yes we aren’t under the Swiss goveternt but if we are trying to recover the money, there must be agreements”.

His colleagues shouted him down but he remained resolute in his argument saying “If the government is trying to do something for the most vulnerable, it is not wrong. If this opposition continues, we might end up not getting it again”.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara said there is a need for more clarification on the Nigeria – Switzerland Agreement on the loot and called for Jubrin’s amendment that was unanimously adopted.
