Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has sustained an injury leading to the encasement of his right leg in Plaster of Paris (POP).

He was treated at an Abuja hospital.

Bello sustained an injury last Thursday before the burial of the Deputy Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Buba Jibril, in Lokoja.

Eyewitnesses said the governor, while alighting from his vehicle, missed his step.

He was reportedly moved to a private hospital in Abuja for treatment, and was represented by his deputy, Elder Simon Achuba.

A statement by his Director-General on Media and Publicity, Kingsly Fanwo, said Bello injured his left foot while alighting from a vehicle.

He, however, debunked news that the governor was hospitalised.

The statement reads: “We wish to refute rumours that the governor is either hospitalised or otherwise incapacitated. The governor missed his step last Friday while alighting from a vehicle and injured his left foot.

“He was treated by his doctors, who bandaged the leg and discharged him.

“We thank supporters and well-wishers who reached us to ask after his wellbeing. The governor is doing very well and will be at work after the Easter holidays.”

  • DSS arrest major financier, armourer of kidnap gang in Kogi

The Department of State Services ( DSS ) said it had arrested Lawal Mohammed, a suspected major financier and amourer of the dreaded Basalube kidnap gang in Kogi.

A statement issued by an operative of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo, on Tuesday in Abuja, said the suspect was arrested on March 23, at Japama in Obajana Local Government Area of Kogi.

Opuiyo said that the suspect was apprehended with two other members of the gang, Mohammed Tukur and Abubakar Ibrahim, by the joint team of the Service and the Military during the operation.

He said that Tukur was identified as the Chief surveillance officer of the gang who coordinated the gang’s movement across Rivers, Edo, Delta, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory, preparatory to the execution of their operations.

The operative said that items recovered from the suspects include: three cell phones and 25 bottles of psychotropic inducers.

In a related development, the DSS said it had also arrested five suspected members of the Basulube kidnap gang at Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta.

The suspects are: Ali Abubakar, a top ranking member of the gang, Abubakareem Idrisa,Bashir Tsoho, Sanusi Abubakar, Nuhu Muhammadu and Abubakar Abdulhammeed.

“This arrest was effected while Abubakar was perfecting plans to carry out kidnap operations in Obajana, Kogi,“he said.

He said that in its determination to decimate the gang, the Service on on March 26 arrested Abubakar Danlansu, driver and weapon courier of the group at Dikko area of Niger.

“The suspect was arrested enroute Edo from where he was to convey weapons to Obajana in Kogi for the gang’s planned kidnap operations.

He said that the service had arrested Matthew Ekam, 39, in connection with the kidanap of Obianuju Onyema in Yenagoa on March 12 and later released by the kidnappers on March 18.

Opuiyo said the suspect is a native of Ogoja, Cross River and a driver of a heavy duty truck operating between Bayelsa and Rivers.

He said that on March 24, the service arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Mohammed Bello on the outskirt of Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State.

He said Bello was believed to be carrying out surveillance activities for the extremist group in the area.

“At the point of his arrest, several handsets, multiple identity cards including those of a Police Constable and neighbourhood vigilante member and N37,857.00 were recovered from him,“he said.

“The arrest of these suspects hold major significance for law and order and safety of persons.

“It is instructive to note that the activities of kidnappers and armed robbers on the Lokoja-Okene and Abuja-Kaduna corridors have relatively reduced as a result of sustained counter operations of the Service and sister security agencies,“he said.

Opuiyo said that the recent arrest of Abubakar and other members of the dreaded Basalube kidnap gang would apparently result in the complete elimination of violent and other allied crimes in those regions.

“The successes so far recorded by the Service are geared toward providing a safe and peaceful environment for law abiding citizens to pursue their legitimate endeavours.

“We wish to reassure the public that the tempo of these operations will be continually reviewed, strengthened and sustained.

“The Service, therefore, wishes to reiterate its stance that all perpetrators of violence and criminality against the Nigerian State and its law-abiding citizens will be made to face the full course of law no matter how long it takes, “he said.

  • Melaye travels abroad, alleges threat to life in Kogi

•Senator petitions IG, UN, others •’I’m willing to be quizzed in Abuja’

EMBATTLED Chairman of Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator Dino Melaye yesterday raised the alarm over alleged threat to his life.

Melaye, who made the allegation through his lawyers, Messrs Ricky Tarfa & Co, claimed that he is abroad “on an official trip”.

His lawyer said the plot was brought to Melaye’s notice abroad and he :immediately informed us yesterday that the plans to set him up and frame him on spurious gun-running charges have been perfected and that some suspects would be paraded as having named him as their sponsor yesterday”.

He alleged that a plot has been hatched to “murder him extra-judicially” by his “political enemies” in Kogi State in collusion with men of the state police command.

The Kogi West senator made the allegation in separate petitions to the United Nations (UN) Resident Representative, members of the diplomatic corps – including the Ambassadors of the United States, Germany, Canada and the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom.

Others he sent the petition to include Amnesty International, Transparency International and the Human Rights Watch.

He also forwarded the petition to Inspector General (IG) Ibrahim Idris.

He urged the police boss to raise a neutral police team to investigate the allegations of “gun running” levelled against him by the Kogi State Police Command and the Kogi State Government

He sought for the intervention of the IG, members of the international community and human rights bodies to save him from what he described as “willful, intentional harassment, oppression, political victimisation and threat to life”.

Melaye prayed the UN and other envoys in Nigeria to help guarantee his fundamental human rights to liberty and safety from fear and harm to his person as well as threats to terminate his life allegedly by agents of the Kogi State Government.

Part of the petition reads: “As things stand, I live each day in constant and reasonable fear for my life, looking over my shoulders and being harassed by the named politicians. The police are a willing tool in the hands of these politicians.”

Melaye, who endorsed one of the petitions, said: “I am a law-abiding citizen, who voluntarily submitted myself before the FCT High Court to answer to charges, which I know are unsustainable.

“However, the situation I am in right now gives me reason to believe that the law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, are in cohorts with my political enemies and can even go to the extent of terminating my life extra-judicially.

“I, therefore, seek your intervention in the circumstances to ensure that my fundamental human rights, which both Nigeria and your countries are party to, are guaranteed and my life protected.”

Tarfa, SAN, in another petition to the IGP on behalf of Melaye, said: “The fact that our client is now the one alleged to be a gun runner by the police in Kogi State is, therefore, extremely suspicious and with all due respect smacks of a set up.

“Our client who is abroad on an official trip had it brought to his notice and immediately informed us yesterday that the plans to set him up and frame him on spurious gun-running charges have been perfected and that some suspects would be paraded as having named him as their sponsor yesterday…”

Melaye, in his “save my soul letter” to the UN and members of the diplomatic corps in Nigeria, traced his present ordeal to his vocal stance in the Senate.

  • Miyetti-Allah denies involvement in Kogi killings

Says Anti Open-Grazing law is unfavorable

Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Socio-Cultural Organisation has denied involvement of Fulani herdsmen in the recent killings that occurred in Kogi State.

National Secretary of the association, Engr. Salleh Al-hassan, who spoke during an interview at the Federal High Court, yesterday in Abuja alleged that Fulani people were murdered by members of Kogi State Vigilante groups for killings that were carried out by criminals.

He blamed the unlawful killings of Fulanis on unnecessary labelling of his members as being responsible for all insecurity cases in the country but his members were not involved in the Kogi killings.

He accused the media of unfair reportage stressing that Benue killings were allegedly perpetrated by political thug to the Benue state Governor, Samuel Ortom.

Al-Hassan said: “They tag every form of insecurity now to the herdsmen. But when you go and look at the police report you won’t find it like that. Look at the recent incident in kogi, criminals killed vigilante leader and the following day youths that are members of the vigilante descended on Fulani people and started killing them and nobody is reporting that side of the story.

“The Fulani people are killed in every corner and because there is this gang up and media Propaganda profiling and stereotyping us.

“The issue of insecurity in Nigeria is largely the responsibility of government, they have failed to provide security particularly in the rural areas and some governors now have resulted to outsourcing our security to vigilante groups who are made up of criminals and political thugs. They have now assumed a live of their own by killing people even their own. Most of the killings in Benue State were done by Gana who is a political tug that was working for Governor Samuel Ortom and he is still at large in spite of the police and military we have there.”

According to him, State Governors have taken advantage of Federal Government’s inability to provide security at rural areas stressing that it was outsourced to states to vigilante groups, allegedly made up of political thugs and other criminal elements.

He complained about the delay in the delivery of justice in the cased between his organisation and Benue State Government at the Federal High Court, which has lasted over a year.

The case was adjourned till 23rd May, 2018.

He claimed the delay in justice was handwork of wicked and desperate politicians citing Ortom as an instance.

According to him, the governor was attempting to take advantage of the farmers/herders crisis to secure his second-term bid.

“Why is Gana still at large and not arrested, he led the killings in Vandakia. Even the latest killing is attached to the militia he is leading. Today the livestock guard is headed by on Ali Tishako a retired Boko Haramist and not arrested up till now and the Governor is using him as head of livestock guard.

“Look at the number of killings they have done to the Fulani people, 727 in Mambila Plateau not a single person was arrested. A local Government Chairman and Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly were fingered there and nobody was arrested. He is guilty of that massacre and he is still walking free. In Jere here they killed 87 Fulani people there and even in Numan. Nobody is arrested

“Today, one year now we took our case to the federal High court because we don’t like that law Ortom put in place, one year ago, we have not gotten justice. Somebody is deliberately trying to push the Fulani people into rebellion.

“I see it as an agenda by very wicked desperate politicians. Look at Governor Ortom 14 months without paying salaries and pensions and no single physical project. His only political project is to demonise the herders for him to get re-election. It is open, it is a propaganda they go and do ceremonial burials of empty caskets.” He added.

Earlier, President of the socio-cultural group, Bello Bodejo said the anti-grazing law of the Benue state was unfavourable to the herders but supported the cattle colony recommended by the federal government.

He noted that it restore peace among farmers and herders.

“The federal government has many ways to address the problem. The anti-grazing law says they can’t sell land for Fulanis instead they will hire the land to Fulanis for one year. They can do the cattle colony and we will accept it. We have our own practice like the cattle colony before now, but the difference is just the name given to it. We appeal to the federal government to give us cattle colony but we don’t need this anti-grazing law because it is not favourable to us.

“We have lost almost 40, 000 cattle. The problem is that the Fulani men do not have access to media, if they tell you what has happened to them you will just cry.” He added

  • Kogi monarch, eight others killed in ‘herdsmen attack’

Nine persons, including a traditional ruler, were killed in attacks on Agbenema, Ajichekpa, Opada and Iyade villages, in Omala Local Government of Kogi State.

    Several houses were burnt.

The Onu of Agbenema, Musa Edibo, and his wife were burnt in the palace, with the home of ex-Vice Chairman of Omala council Adofu Stephen, also torched.

Former Majority Leader of the House of Assembly Azania Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said the indigenes were unsure whether or not to call on security operatives for help.

The attackers were said to have hidden in bushes around the villages from where they attacked their targets.

According to sources, the herdsmen’s mode of operation is to set houses ablaze and  shoot fleeing inhabitants; slit their throats and cut them with machete.

The administrator of Omala, Ibrahim Aboh, escaped the onslaught.

Residents said soldiers deployed to curtail herdsmen attacks allegedly refused to assist.

One of them said: “We were surprised when we approached soldiers at the Guest House at Abejukolo for help. They refused to act professionally and instead used their vehicle to block us from moving to the troubled spot to help our people.

“It is clear that the aim of the Fulani herdsmen is to kill us and take over our ancestral homes. They have razed Ojuwo, Ajomayeigbi, Iyade, Agbenema and Opada villages, so that they could use our land for their cattle colonies.

“We want the world to come to our aid before the Fulani exterminate and inherit our land. We have lost confidence in the security agencies deployed here. We believe they have been instructed to adopt the ‘siddon look’ approach, while we are massacred.

“Right now, a coordinated war is raging simultaneously in most villages in Omala, Dekina and Bassa councils. Our people are being killed and houses burnt; our women are being raped while many children, who ran from the theatre of war, are still missing.”

Governor Yahaya Bello last Saturday visited Oganenigu where many were killed and houses burnt by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

“We were surprised when we approached the soldiers who were stationed at the Guest House at Abejukolo, for assistance. They refused to act professionally as they used their vehicle to block us from advancing to the troubled spot to help our people.

  • Kogi, unlawful importation and Customs

THE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recently confiscated some security items allegedly imported by Kogi State government and flown in through the Abuja International Airport. No end-user certificate accompanied the consignment, though the clearing agent insisted he had one in his possession. Having identified the importer through the clearing agent, the Service gave them a one-month ultimatum to produce the end-user certificate from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). Should it take so long to produce a document they claimed was in their possession? Kogi State will naturally hope that by their fawning relationship with the presidency, that certificate would be procured within the time frame given them by the generous Customs. But whether the ultimatum and the claims of the agent explain and justify the importation of restricted security items without the requisite end-user certificate in the first instance is not clear. In addition, both the Customs and the NSA will have to convince themselves that by their lenient handling of this delicate matter, other importers with a predilection for skirting the boundaries and confines of the law would not take to deliberate and affronting racketeering.

According to the Customs, the agent claimed to be in possession of the end-user certificate, and in addition alleged that the Kogi State government was the client/importer. The state has not officially reacted. The items unlawfully imported, according to reports, include military camouflage, camouflage jungle boots, plastic knives, black bullet proof vests, black boxing gloves, arctic hunter bags, training mats, black batons, black T-shirts, protective glasses, black sunglasses and black uniform belts. Against the background of fears that the state government might be trying to raise a squad of militant enforcers for the next elections, the importation of security items in flagrant contravention of importation rules may indicate the terrible dangers the state is being exposed to.

The Kogi State government knows nothing about the law or democracy, and it cares nothing for the great values and virtues that underpin decent and civilised society. Its legislature has become a rubber stamp, the labour unions are overwhelmed, and civil society hardly exists. Both the ruling party and the federal government have turned a blind eye to the state government’s repeated infractions and constitutional illegalities, with the governor himself a product of brazen affront to the law and constitution. By yielding continually to the state’s chicaneries, the federal government, not to say the misdirected All Progressives Congress (APC), may unwittingly be laying the foundation for lawlessness and arbitrariness in Kogi.

The Customs assert that investigations into the unlawful importation of the security items are progressing. (But another government agency, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), last May promised to prosecute Governor Yahaya Bello for double voter card registration only to turn round to perfect his registration and issue him a temporary voter card in February. In Nigeria, black is not always black). Meanwhile, the Customs declined to arrest the agent, and the importer is reportedly making strenuous efforts to procure the end-user certificate. No one knows what the bright minds in Abuja are capable of, or how cynically they regard and respond to the rule of law. But if both the Customs and the NSA validate Kogi’s alleged importation of security items, considering that the state has become reckless, lawless and anti-democratic, they must not look for other explanations if democracy and the Fourth Republic wobble very badly.

The Customs may not be best placed to investigate why Kogi State allegedly needs those security items. But the NSA and the Department of State Service (DSS) should feel obligated to find out why those items were imported and for what purpose. They must take care to get to the bottom of the matter, for Kogi State officials are accomplished liars who treat truth and facts contemptuously. The situation in Kogi is dire, for its government is leading that state to collapse. Consider, for instance, its approach to the cattle grazing controversy, especially its forwardness and abominable lack of proaction. Now with the attacks on Dekina and Omala Local Government Areas of the state by herdsmen, during which some 25 people were said to have been killed and many villages sacked, the state is reaping the fruits of the governor’s brashness.

It is not certain that the House of Representatives’ probe of the illegal importation of security items allegedly by Kogi will be accomplished with the urgency it demands, but all things considered, the state appears to be primed in the coming months for violence and sundry crises. The ruling party of course specialises in fomenting discord; just as it it has no talent in managing it. Meanwhile, the presidency has not shown the neutrality expected of it. On its own, the Customs have done well to bring the issue into the open, even though they have not taken far-reaching steps to handle the matter with the aplomb that is consistent with their powers. Hopefully, instead of waffling, the NSA will not only decline to issue the end-user certificate, he will, together with other security agencies, find out whether the law had not been flouted and by whom.
