  • LG, bus operator’s dispute lingers in Kano

New road Luxury park operators in Kano now load passengers along the roadside, following the sealing off of their park by Fagge Local Government authorities over a disagreement bordering on imposition of exploitative charges on East and West bound buses.

Addressing reporters in Kano on Wednesday on the development, the leader of the Luxury Bus owners, Chief Uche Megwalu, who is a co-founder of the association, disclosed that despite the monthly remittance of N300, 000 monthly by the Luxury Bus Owners Association to Fagge Local Government, the new revenue collector’s Group MD, Muhammadu Sanusi Umar has just imposed a fresh N12, 000 daily fee on each fully loaded bus departing the park for its respective destination.

Following the imposition of the fresh charges, a development, which did not go down well with the Luxury Buses Association, its leadership made fruitless efforts to reach out to the Revenue Collecting MD to rob minds and amicably resolve the pending dispute but regretted that the MD has remained evasive.

Meanwhile, the impending situation has compelled the Luxury Owners to commence loading South East and Westbound passenger’s right in front of the sealed gate, thereby resulting to a perpetual hold-up on motorists, plying the New Road route to link Airport Road and environs.

For a peaceful resolution of the lingering clash between the Luxury Bus Owners and the Revenue Collector, the Leadership of the Luxury Bus Association, led by Chief Uche Megwalu is calling on all stakeholders to give peace a chance, so as to amicably resolve the impasse.

According to Megwalu, the crisis started from the Fagge Local Government Chairman, who imposed charges, more than the agreement reached between the LG and the Luxury Bus Owners Association.

‘’We have an agreement with the Local Government Chairman, which was signed by both parties in 2001. We reached an agreement with Fagge LG to relocate St Stephen’s Church, original owners of the park and compensate them, which we are part and parcel.’

“Unfortunately, our agreement is N30, 000 per month, translating to N5, 000 per bus to our surprise, he imposed N12, 000 daily per bus, a situation that informed our decision to contact him for an amicable resolution of the dispute but unfortunately, he was nowhere to be found.

“Instead, he contracted the revenue collection to a private collector to be collecting N12, 000 daily per bus, that in essence is the cause of the lingering crisis.’’

Already, Megwalu told newsmen that the Luxury Bus Association has instituted a legal action, but disclosed that no date has been fixed to commence hearing from the parties on the dispute.
