Reasons for bad leadership, by Kolade, Bishop, ex-UNILAG VC

Former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Dr Christopher Kolade has blamed citizens for bad leadership in Nigeria.

Kolade said many Nigerians have forgotten values.

He was the Chairman at a symposium of The Venerable Henry Johnson Foundation for Theology and Social Transformation, held in Surulere, Lagos, Mainland, yesterday, with the theme, “An antidote to a defective leadership”.

Kolade said: “A leader is expected to represent and serve the people; why should I be paid to vote someone to serve me; should it not be the other way round? Our constitution only says the Nigerian leaders should have educational requirement, but did not insist that they have passed the exam. There is also the age requirement and the political party to sponsor. No requirement of track record performance. We followers must take a lead to define what we want in the constitution and we must begin to make the leaders accountable for them. We followers have something in us that we can apply to help defective leadership get better.”

The Rt Revd Akinpelu Johnson, Bishop of the Dioceses of Lagos Mainland (Anglican Communion), noted that followers in Nigeria have a say to determine who leads them. “There must be a system to hold our leaders accountable. The essence of this symposium is to promote theological research into provision of good governance in Nigeria.”

Former Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof Ibidapo Obe, noted that “if we will make progress in Nigeria, the country must be merit based and not on whom you know”.

He said it is the responsibility or leaders to develop their followers.

“Leaders need to sustain and mentor the followers. A leader must have knowledge and passion of seeing a transformation in the followers. A leader must be self-regulated,” he said.

To former Deputy Governor of Lagos State Mrs Sarah Sosan, all Nigerians are to blame for whatever is wrong in the society.

“All Nigerians have a role to play in effective leadership in the country. We should be able to manage him or herself well, must be competent, committed, take responsibility and be a thinker.

“Followers must be focused, have discretion and the courage to call the leader to order. Nigerians must be able to put away sentiment and ensure things are done aright. Many of us do not talk or question our leaders because of the benefits we derive from them,” she said.

  • Kolade, others: Nigeria better in unity

Southern elder statesmen yesterday affirmed their belief in Nigeria’s unity.

They dismissed agitations for disintegration and secession, saying no one stood to gain from the dismemberment of the nation.

The elder statesmen, led by former Nigeria’s former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr Christopher Kolade and former Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Prof. Anya o. Anya, spoke in Lagos.

They met under the aegis of YIIEGBA, an inter-ethnic coalition established to ensure unity, progress and good governance in the nation.

Other prominent members of the coalition include: Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Senator Ebenzer Ikeyina; Gen. Ike Nwachukwu; Rear Admiral Alison Madueke; Senator Oladipo Olaitan and Amb. Uche Okeke.

Others are: Mr. Nathaniel Okoro, Captain Prekeme Porbeni(rtd) and Mr. Shyggle Wigwe,  among others.

Kolade said: “We believe that staying together and working together is the only viable way to go.

‘’There is no alternative to one Nigeria. As elders, we shall do everything necessary to keep the nation as one.’’

He said those who have witnessed war will never stay quiet when some elements are pushing to the nation to the precipice again.

He described the coalition as a think-tank to keep Nigeria as one and indissoluble.

‘’We are facing current challenges with the wisdom of the past for a better future,’’ he stated.

Kolade warned against hate speeches and other acts capable of disintegrating the nation, saying the price for peace are always cheaper to that of war.

Anya, who is co-chair of the coalition, said the nation must restructure to avoid the looming conflagrations.

He said with the coalition, the journey for a new Nigeria birthed with equity, fairness and progress has begun.

Nwachukwu said the nation was in dire needs of a new format to survive the numerous agitations and unresolved issues.

He supported calls for restructuring, saying there was no better alternative to keep the nation as one.

A strategic thinker, Ladi Thompson, said elders statesmen must quickly rally round to save the nation from the self-reproducing programme of fractal failures by colonial leaders.

He argued that ethnic groups in Nigeria were programmed to live in mutual suspicion and hostility by colonialists, saying there must be reversed engineering to redirect the nation to the path of progress.

Kolade to students: show interest in politics

What role do students have in the 2015 general elections? Dr Christopher Kolade, former Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, who spoke at a symposium organised by BrandiQ Magazine, wants the youth to drive the process, reports BALIKIS MOYOSORE.

Do students have a role to play in the 2015 general elections? Former Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Dr Christopher Kolade said apart from participating in the exercise as voters, students must drive the process to ensure hitch-free elections.

The former envoy spoke at the 2014 BrandiQ Magazine Symposium with the theme: Politics, business and 2015 general elections: Driving stakeholder’s participation through deliberative engagements, held at the Civic Centre on Victoria Island, Lagos. In attendance were students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Redeemer’s University (RUN), Bells University of Technology (BELLS), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and Lagos State University (LASU).

Other speakers at the event included the Dean, School of Media and Communications of Pan-Atlantic University, Prof Emevwo Biakolo, Editor-in-Chief of BusinessWorld Mr Ray Echebiri, former Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) Registrar Dr Josef Bel-Molokwu, former Lagos State Commissioner for Environment Dr Muiz Banire, and former Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) chief, Apostle Hayford Alile, the chief host.

Kolade advised the youth to drop their apathy for politics and election, saying: “You must not sit back and say that you have no business in politics and leave it for the politicians. Whatever the results from the game of politics will affect everybody, including students.”

Politics, he said, is one of the most important stakes the people have in Nigeria. “You should not allow yourselves to be deterred by the antics of people who are called practitioners in politics. It is when we have good governance that everybody will have chance to actualise our stakes. If activities leading to good governance are being carried out without your participation, then you will blame yourself eventually for the bad outcome, because you failed to participate,” he said.

The Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of BrandiQ, Mr Desmond Ekeh, said the aim of the magazine was not only to report brands, but also the packaging and content of the Nigeria. He said: “The paucity of skilled hands in the industry necessitated the magazine to go into training of students to equip them with skills that will make them function optimally in the industry.”

Prof Biakolo examined the idea of a nation-state in relation to Nigeria, stressing that there were many misconceptions that accompany it. He observed that only a few states could claim to be nation-states, which, he said, were not sustainable in a multi-ethnic and plural society. While pointing out how difficult it would be to attain cohesiveness among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria and drive political participation among Nigerians, he said the idea of cohesiveness itself was foisted on the country by colonial regime.

Speaking on the effect of politics on business, Echebiri blamed the present woes of the NSE on politics. He noted that trading in the stock market was becoming weak because of the forthcoming elections. He lamented the rate at which foreign investors were selling their shares and leaving the country, saying the implication would be grave on the economy.

Echebiri explained how government policies affected business climate in the past, saying privatisation policy saw many government enterprises including banks privatised.

He, however, welcomed some government policies, such as the ban on importation of drinks and poultry products, which, he said, had helped to grow local production. In his submission, Echebiri said since government politics affects business, every Nigerian must participate in politics to formulate quality policies, which make the economy to grow stronger.

A social media strategist, Ms Chioma Agwuegbo, urged the youth to walk the talk in politics. She identified voters’ registration as the first step in the process of political participation, urging them to go for the exercise. She said: “We can’t be stakeholders if all we do is go on social media and tweet out our thoughts and complaints. We must take advantage of our demographic superiority to effect changes in government through our participating in politics.”

  • Challenges of leadership, by Kolade

    Challenges of leadership, by Kolade

HOW to find the right people to work with, gain and retain their commitment, have interpersonal skills, know the right balance of power and authority, and use both to achieve desired objectives, are part of the major challenges former Nigeria’s High Commissioner to United Kingdom (UK), Dr Christopher Kolade highlighted at a lecture by Caleb University, Ikorodu in Lagos.

The Pro-Chancellor of the Pan-Atlantic University spoke on the topic: The management of leadership opportunity.

He said: “We start with a natural capacity for learning through imitation, and if we develop this, the seed that was planted in infancy may show up as leadership traits when the need arises in later life. However that may be, we will become successful and effective leaders if we seize every opportunity to learn the right things, and to develop our capacity for applying what we learn to the leadership activity,” he added.

Dr Kolade, who is also the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Caleb University, said Nigeria needs leaders that will use the God-given resources of this country in building a nation that will, once again, earn the respect of the rest of the world.

“Leaders should always remind themselves of the National Pledge, wherein we offer to serve the country rather than ourselves, and wherein we volunteer to use all our strength and other resources to uphold the dignity of our fatherland – So help us, God!

“Leaders must be able to find credible ways of pursuing the organisation’s objectives within the time and the resources available. Leaders must be able to come up with acceptable and effective ways of improving the organisation’s ability to find or generate additional resources when such resources are needed to ensure the attainment of the standards to which organisational effort has been committed. Leaders must see the selection, appointment, development and retention of good quality people as one of their main responsibilities.”

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Ayodele Olukoju, said the academy, which has been existing since 2011, was formed to train students to be good potential leaders. He said he was passionate to emulate the leadership skills enunciated by Kolade.

  • N500b SURE-P cash not missing, says Kolade

N500b SURE-P cash not missing, says Kolade

The outgoing Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), Dr. Christopher Kolade, said yesterday N500 billion is neither missing nor unaccounted for.

The former Nigerian Ambassador to the United Kingdom (UK) said his imminent exit from SURE-P was not the fallout of the controversy generated by the alleged missing funds.

Kolade said he, in September, wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan that he wished to retire from the programme.

The former envoy advised that to make the subsidy fund more effective and beneficial to Nigerians, its management should be included in the determination and formulation of programmes for identified areas of intervention.

Kolade spoke at the plenary of the committee in Abuja where he said the reports of the missing funds were unfounded.

He said: “The allegation of missing N500 billion remains a rumour because there is nothing like that. It is only sad that efforts were not made to find out the truth from SURE-P. The report was mischievous because it was written out of ignorance.

“There should be arrangements for finding out the truth rather than writing out of ignorance. We have a report with the Senate Committee where details of our funds are contained.

“The Federal Government’s share of the reinvested subsidy fund is 41 per cent while the states and local government were to share 54 per cent between them. The rest five per cent was for the Ecological Fund. This means that the committee is only responsible for 41 per cent of the fund.

“Whoever started the rumour said the committee appeared before the National Assembly and could only account for N300 billion of the N800 billion. In other words, we have probably accounted for our 41 per cent.

“So, what we are saying is: does the remaining N500 billion truly unaccounted for or missing? The answer is no, because we know that the 59 per cent is allocated to the states, local governments and the Ecological Fund. That shows that the fund is not missing.”

The SURE-P chairman regretted that the alleged missing funds could generate an editorial in a national newspaper (not The Nation).

He said: “It is regrettable that a respected newspaper could do that and I see it as a waste of editorial energy.

“This is because the readers have been betrayed by not finding out the truth. We have always been open with our finances and the Minister of Finance has often published in the press the amount of money allocated to each state and local government every month.

“For the records, we have written reports and have presented it to the National Assembly.”

  • Shema, Kolade urge accountable leadership

    Shema, Kolade urge accountable leadership

Katsina State Governor Dr. Ibrahim Shema has said government must ensure transparent management of resources, to maintain peace and ensure economic growth.

Speaking yesterday through the Head of Service, Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed, at a lecture organised by the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) in Lagos, Governor Shema said his administration operates an open door policy to clear doubts in people’s minds.

The governor, who is a guest speaker on the topic: “The Challenges of Political Leadership,” said government’s agencies, which complement, sustain and support the maintenance of peace in the state, have imbibed the culture of tolerance and accorded the indigenes their rights under the rule of law.

He went on: “This has created an atmosphere of ambience, giving a platform for religious leaders to meet government and its officials on the issues of mutual concern.”

Governor Shema said his administration had struck a balance among the arms of government. “As the chief law officer of the state, government, as represented by the executive arm, has institutionalised the independence of these arms in the administration of their finance, among others,” he said.

The Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), Dr. Christopher Kolade, said leadership was about sacrifice.

He said leaders should offer selfless service in whatever capacity they found themselves.

Dr. Kolade said Katsina today stands out among the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-controlled states because of its pro-people’s policies and accountability.

He said the plan by lawmakers in the National Assembly to put themselves on pension was self-serving, adding that it would have a negative effect in the long run.

“We have allowed politics to obscure governance. Members of the National Assembly, who want to put themselves on pension, should think of the cost and effect on the economy. If you accept it this way, not only will you suffer for it, but your children will also face the consequence. We must make sacrifices to return our country to the path of glory,” Dr. Kolade said.

  • 40 million Nigerians jobless, says Kolade

40 million Nigerians jobless, says Kolade

About 40 million Nigerians translating to 23.9 per cent are unemployed, Chairman, Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) Dr Christopher Kolade has said.

He spoke yesterday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital at a sensitisation forum for firms in the state.

Quoting the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), he added that one of the challenges of graduate unemployment is the “inability of the system to absorb the about 300,000 graduates churned out of our tertiary institutions.”

Kolade, who was represented at the forum by the Assistant Director and Head of Services, SURE-P, Anthony Kalu, said:“Firms readily blame lack of experience, high cost of maintaining a large work force and the need to maintain profit above the red line as the reason for not employing the graduates. GIS provides a way out of this dilemma by developing a skill base that firms can benefit from among our graduates at very minimal cost.

He added that the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) of the programme aims to employ at about 50,000 unemployed graduates in 36 states and FCT in one year.

He said the scheme is targeted at improving the skills unemployed graduates through work placement in registered firms.

The chairman SURE-P, who lamented that only 35 per cent of 2,000 registered firms had met minimum requirement for participation, said over 96,000 unemployed graduates have registered on the GIS portal.

The SURE-P chief, therefore, described the forum as a call to action for the participating firms, urging them to partner with the Federal Government and contribute their quota to addressing graduate unemployment.

“In Kwara State, 46 organisations have registered and five have been approved to take interns. Also, out of the 3,290 graduates that have registered in the state, 21 have been matched to firms and only three have been hired.

“Clearly, there is an urgent need for more firms to participate in this programme and take graduates out of the labour market,” he said.

Kolade said graduates will be placed in profit, non-profit organisations and selected government agencies on a one year internship, adding that the interns are expected to acquire professional skills, training and work experience to improve their job placement opportunities.

He said the Federal Government will pay a monthly stipend of N25,000 to the interns while participating institutions will be expected to provide adequate opportunities for work and mentoring, including personal accident insurance.

“Government is concerned about high unemployment rate and is doing everything possible to reverse it. It recognises the fact that stakeholders- Federal Government, state governments, local governments, organised private sector, development organisations, and religious organisations must also resolve to reverse this trend for it to change,” he said.

  • Corruption is real, says Kolade

    Corruption is real, says Kolade

Chairman of Subsidy Recuitment and Empowerement Programme (SURE-P), Dr Christopher Kolade, has said that President Goodluck Jonathan was wrong to claim that corruption is exaggerated in Nigeria.

Speaking at the conference of the Nigeria International Book Fair (NIBF) at the Multipurpose Halls, University of Lagos (UNILAG) yesterday, Dr Kolade said evidence of corruption abound in Nigeria.

He said those who know should go public to convince Mr President of the extent of corruption in Nigeria so that he becomes convinced that it is thriving. He described the story of websites which provided candidates that wrote the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with fake answers as an example of corruption.

He added that former President Olusegun Obasanjo admitted that corruption is Nigeria’s number one enemy.

He said Jonathan would be convinced about corruption “by all of us who know that corruption is not exaggerated going in public and saying so. You see, you must remember that the President lives in a protected environment. So, many things that are happening in the real world he doesn’t have contact with. So, he forms his opinion from where he is sitting. Those of us who have a different experience should also go public and say that corruption is not exaggerated; we should try and do something about it.

“When Olusegun Obasanjo was President, he said corruption is our enemy number one. It has not changed. In fact, it has gotten worse. So, we should say so publicly. The country is as much your own as it is mine.”

Former Anambra State Governor Mrs Virgy Etiaba, who was special guest of honour, lamented the dwindling fortunes of education, saying that the government is not investing in the sector.
