  • Kogi flags off delivery of free drugs to flood victims

    The Kogi State government said it has commenced with the delivery of free drugs to flood victims in the nine affected local government areas.

    The exercise which flagged off on Friday in Koton-Karfe, Kogi LGA, by Governor Yahaya Bello, will see to the delivery of drugs worth millions of naira to flood victims in the affected areas.

    The Special Adviser to the governor on local government and chieftaincy affairs, Hon. Abubakar Ohere, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Engr. Usman Dan Victor, while flagging off the exercise at the St. Pius Primary School, in Koto, said that the governor was much concerned about the wellbeing of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

    He expressed sympathy with the flood victims, noting that the governor will continue to improve on the health delivery system of the state in order to meet the health challenges of the people.

    He applauded the efforts of the 21 LGAs, for joining resources in procuring the drugs for the flood victims, and donor agencies, for coming to their aid.

    The leader of the medical team, Dr Gabriel Enefu said that they will be at the affected nine LGAs to deliver free drugs and conduct medical checkups to the victims.

    He said that they will provide water treatment drugs, insecticide treated mosquito nets and various drugs to the flood victims in the affected areas.

  • Melaye: Verification peaceful, low turnout in Lokoja, Koton-Karfe

    The verification exercise as part of processes for the recall of Sen. Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial District began peacefully on Saturday, but with low turnout.

    The newsmen correspondent, who monitored the exercise, which started at 8.00 a.m. in the two local governments reports that less than 20 per cent of petitioners had come out as at mid-day.

    At Ukwo-Okoriko Compound in Koton-Karfe, Ward A, unit 003 with 440 petitioners, only 18 had their signatures verified at about 11.00 a.m.

    The electoral officer, Musa Iliasu, said only 18 had been verified but added that it was only INEC that would say which signature was genuine or otherwise.

    At the Ohogabi polling unit near the public tap, 500 petitioners out of the 991 registered voters, only 43 petitioners had their signatures verified by 11:37 a.m.

    Similarly, in Banda, Lokoja Local Government, Oworo Ward 8, Unit 012 with 512 petitioners out of 1005 registered voters, only 40 were verified at about 12:09 p.m.

    At Oworo Ward 8, unit 004 with over 3,340 registered voters and 815 petitioners, none of the petitioners had shown up for the exercise at the time of filing this report.

    At Lokoja Club polling unit, Ward A, unit 016, with 875 petitioners only two had registered their presence at the unit and both complained that their signatures were forged as they were never part of the petitioners.

    One of the petitioners at Lokoja Club polling unit Ward A, unit 016, Samuel Olukotun, threatened to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) for allegedly listing him and his wife as petitioners in the recall bid.

    Doris Ndakwo, a member representing Lokoja II at the State House of Assembly, said the process was new and people did not quite understand.

    She added that some people came out but could not find their names. Ndakwo, however, commended the peaceful disposition of the people.

    Koton-Karfe agog for Audu

    Koton-Karfe, the headquarters of Kogi Local Government, was agog yesterday as members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held a solidarity march to mobilise voters ahead of the November 21 governorship election.

    The event, tagged: “Ten Thousand-Man March, Walk for Change”, started at Tatu Hotel about 2:20pm, moving through the Ohimege Igu Palace Road to the village square where the people converged to listen to messages.

    Addressing the supporters, one of the APC leaders in the area, Saidu Akawu Salihu, said the wind of change blowing across the country would soon sweep away vices in Kogi State.

    He urged the electorate, especially youths, to resist attempts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the elections.

    Salihu, a former member of the House of Assembly, said what he saw showed the end of the PDP in the area.

    The President, Abubakar Audu Vanguard for Change, Comrade Abdullahi Jibrin Babalauya, said the people were tired of failed promises by then PDP and were ready to vote it out.

    La Campagne Beach Resort will opening its second property in Nigeria at Koton Karfe, Kogi State.  To achieve this, the community recently hosted a team of  La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort management led by the president and founder of La Campagne, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye.

    It was a mix of culture and glamour at the palace of the  Ohimege Igu, Koton  Karfe, Alhaji Gambo Abdulrazak Isa Koto . The occasion was to formalise the birth of La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in the community and the presentation of the Certificate of Occupancy (CoF O) site and survey plan for the 90 hectares of land ,approximately 270 acres of land that the community has donated for the building of the resort.

    Addressing the emir and his people, Akinboboye, disclosed that the development was not only gratifying, but a historic event given that 30 years after La Campagne berthed at Ikegun Village, near Lekki, Lagos, as a solely African themed resort, the people of Koton Karfe is the second community to realise the importance of having La Campagne resort in their midst and had graciously gone ahead to donate an expanse of communal land for the project.

    He spoke glowingly of the uniqueness of the African themed resort, which he said is focused on promoting African cultural values and tradition, insisting that when people come to Africa and Nigeria by extension, they have come to experience the culture of the people hence he said that:

    ”We must take our culture and polish it and then take it into our hotels and resorts but we have so far failed in doing this and the people (tourists) are disappointed when they come because we only treat them to the cheap imitation of their own culture,” adding that ”it is only when you get other people to buy into your culture and experience it that you prosper and your culture endures.”

    Akinboboye spoke of the enormous economic benefits of hinging tourism development on the country’s culture, saying that ”when you build around your culture, you will empower your people.” Therefore, he said that the emir should be commended for his foresight and dedication to the welfare and development of his people and community.

    ”It is the empowerment of the people that the emir is promoting through the La Campagne project. The prosperity that will come to Koton Karfe will come from the visitors from the various parts of the world because we are going to build the resort around the culture of the Koton karfe community,” he said, adding that ”the advantage will be for the people of Koton Karfe because they are the owners of the culture.

    ”It is when you take advantage of your advantage, which is your culture that you have advantage over others. Nobody can promote your culture more than yourself and that is what we want to do with Koton Karfe culture,” he stressed ,even as he disclosed that the community would be the one to drive the project as it will create employment for them in every spheres.

    Citing the instance of the Ikegun Village where the resort in the last 30 years has brought tremendous physical and economic developments to the people with over 80 per cent of the personnel drawn from within the community.

    ”Eighty per cent of our staff are from Ikegun Village and they have been enriched and empowered through the services of the resort to the extent of having their own personal houses and many other economic benefits,”he said.
