  • Legacy party members accuse Kwara APC of unfair treatment

Some members of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) yesterday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State of unfair treatment. The aggrieved members, under the aegis of Caucus for Progressive Change in Kwara, alleged that appointments and party positions in the state had been tilted in favour of the nPDP group within the party.

But Spokesperson of APC in the state, Sulyman Buhari, dismissed the allegations as false and untrue. He urged party members with grievances to always channel such through the appropriate channels to the state secretariat. “The allegations are not true. They are just being mischievous. They just want to destabilise the peace we have been enjoying in the party in the state,” he said.

Addressing reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, chairman of the faction, Samari Abdullahi, said “it is regrettable that the nPDP family in our marriage has not only behaved as a superior partner but had done so with impunity.” Abdulahi, who is the former caretaker secretary ACN in the state, added that “the party leadership in Kwara State and nay government are allergic to alternative advice and constructive criticisms and has deployed everything within its powers to stifle party members.

“Most of the APC (legacy) aspirants for the last local government election in the state were technically suppressed because of the way the party has been deliberately structured down to the wards, to fence away presumed distrusted members. So far, appointments to the state from the federal are lopsided. 95 percent of federal appointment including the recently released board memberships only went to the nPDP members within the APC in Kwara State.

While we await response from the relevant authorities, we are constrained to announce men and women of proven characters to lead this reformation group to warm the party back into the hearts of the electorate and cause justice to reign in the party.”

  • Investigate alleged defection, group urges Kwara APC

A group within the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), known as the Progressive Caucus (PC), has called on the leadership of the party to investigate the alleged defection of the Special Adviser to the Senate President, Hon. Moshood Mustapha. Stories of Mustapha dumping the ruling APC for the opposition PDP went viral on social media during the week.

Rising from a meeting in Ilorin, the state capital, on Thursday, the group said the online news has caused disquiet among members of the party in Kwara State, particularly when it has not been debunked by the person involved. It therefore called on the party to look into the matter and establish the truth or otherwise of the matter in order to calm frayed nerves within the party.

“We are concerned that the leadership of our party in Kwara State has abdicated its primary roles for mundane and pedestrian moves. The personality involved is not a small fry in the party, so this story cannot be wished away for whatever reason. The party has suffered huge image battering in recent times while the leadership of the party in Kwara State appears to be on vacation.

“Since Honourable Moshood Mustapha has not denied the report or counter those claims in the online report it behoves the party to find out the true state of things from him,” the statement, signed by Kayode Sullyman, said.

Efforts by The Nation to get the reaction of Hon. Mustapha to the story proved abortive as calls and text messages sent to his phone line got no response from him.

Calls for Saraki’s resignation unfair, says Kwara APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has described calls by some people for the resignation of Senate President Bukola Saraki as unfair and unnecessary.

It alleged threat to his life.

A statement by the party’s spokesman, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, said the calls were sponsored by those opposed to Saraki’s emergence as the Senate president.

The statement said: “We wish to condemn, reject and dismiss the calls for the resignation of Senate President Bukola Saraki by sponsored, faceless groups and bought souls. The calls were politically-sponsored.

“Nigerians should make no mistake about it. The call for the resignation of the Senate president by agents of certain politicians is an ill-fated agenda that cannot serve our country any good. It is designed to suit the selfish interests of some desperate politicians.

“We wish to express concern about threats to the life of the Senate president. We are not unaware of the desperation of some politicians to pull him down at all costs and we are concerned that they may resort to assassination.

This constitutes a threat to the Senate president’s life.

“The calls for Saraki’s resignation by sponsored, faceless groups confirm that the case against the Senate president is not an anti-corruption driven matter and cannot be part of the moves aimed at fighting corruption. It is simply a malicious and a politically- motivated prosecution aimed at undermining the person and the office of the Senate president.

“With the collective resolve of Nigerians for a peaceful and a prosperous country with regard for the principles of separation of powers and the independence of the legislature, and the uprightness of the judicial system, this devilish plot against the Senate president is doomed to fail.

“We urge the good people of Kwara State, friends and supporters of the Senate president to remain calm and embrace tranquility, as we believe the judiciary is alive to protect the Senate president from the trap orchestrated by desperate politicians.”

Saraki’s wife’s invitation by EFCC politically motivated —Kwara APC

The Kwara State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the invitation of the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for interrogation as ill-timed and politically motivated.

The party also cautioned the anti-graft agency not to allow itself to be used by political gladiators for their selfish ends.

State Chairman of APC, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, told reporters in Ilorin yesterday that the state capital that Kwara women might take to the streets in solidarity with their ‘mother.’

Balogun-Fulani said: “We as a party received the news of the invitation of the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, as a shock. After five years of leaving office as the governor of Kwara State, it is now that the EFCC thought it necessary to invite the wife of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for questioning. Kwara APC thought the invitation is politically-motivated.

“Everybody is aware that the emergence of her husband as the Senate President did not go down well with some people. Her invitation is a way to throw mud on the person of the Senate President and the senate in general.

“It is also a political way of discrediting the person of Mrs. Saraki and her husband.

“Although we in the state would not ask the anti-graft agency not to do its lawful duties, it should be mindful of how it does it. I urge the EFCC not to politicize the invitation of Mrs. Saraki.

“We have to calm the nerves of Kwara women. Otherwise they would have been on the streets demonstrating against the malicious invitation by the agency. I want to appeal to EFCC to please tread softly not to ignite political turmoil in Kwara State, North-Central and Nigeria at large.

“The Senate is there for the whole of Nigeria and the Senate president is representing the whole of Nigeria. This too should be extended to the wife. The EFCC should not allow itself to be used by political gladiators.”

Kwara APC, PDP bicker over firm

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State are bickering over the status of the state-owned transportation corporation, Kwara Express.

PDP alleged that APC was planning to incapacitate the corporation and acquire the land for private use.

APC’s spokesperson Sulayman Buhari said: ”We reject the PDP’s claims as desperate, callous and an insensitive attempt to incite the public against the APC-led government through disinformation and misrepresentation.

“Coming at a time Kwara Express has returned to profitability, the PDP’s claims are mischievous, anti-progress, and calculated to impede the government’s turnaround of the company.

“There is no truth to the claim that government is trying to incapacitate Kwara Express by selling off its property. Only a misguided party as the PDP will expect government to incapacitate a successful company.

‘’It is equally untrue that Harmony Holdings, Kwara Express’ supervisory company, is owned by any individual.

“It is typical of the PDP’s intellectual laziness to make such outlandish and false claims when a search at the Corporate Affairs Commission will have revealed that the government owns the company.

“We warn the PDP to abstain from this campaign of calumny and focus on how to stem its dwindling fortunes.”

PDP’s spokesman Mohammed Alhassan said: “It is, however, surprising that the Kwara APC is embarking on unclean and dubious policies of transferring the ownership of the land.

“It is also saddening to note that the Corporation had between September 2012 and February generated over N 511million while it still find it very difficult to pay the salaries of its workers.”
