    Detergents gone in Kwara fire

    The fire caused by burst tyre on Monday has consumed detergents packed in a truck in Kwara State.

    It was gathered that the incident happened about 1:25 pm at Lasoju community on the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Expressway.

    It was also learnt that the detergents packed in paper cartons were worth millions of naira.

    Spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident.

    He added that the incident involved an articulated truck with registration number ALK 625 XA.

    Adekunle added: “The continuous friction between the damaged tyre and hot tarred road generated excessive heat, igniting the tire. The fire quickly spread to the detergent products, which were packed in paper cartons.

    “On Monday, May 5, about 13:25 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service promptly responded to a distress call regarding a truck fire at Lasoju, ON the Ogbomoso Expressway, Kwara State. The affected vehicle was an articulated truck transporting detergent with registration plates number ALK 625 XA.’’

    “Upon arrival, the dedicated firefighters swiftly commenced operations to contain the blaze and prevent further damage. Their efforts were commendable, as they worked tirelessly not only to extinguish the fire but also to salvage the goods being conveyed. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.

    “Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident was triggered by a tyre burst while the vehicle was in motion. The continuous friction between the damaged tyre and the hot tarred road generated excessive heat, igniting the tire. The fire quickly spread to the detergent products, which were packed in paper cartons.

    “The Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urged the public to remain vigilant and safety-conscious, especially, when transporting flammable or heat-sensitive materials.”

    Livestock traders count losses after Kwara fire

    Livestock traders at the popular Olusola Saraki Market at Ita-Ama, Kwara State, Ilorin, the state capital, are counting their losses after last Friday’s fire outbreak.

    Vice Chairman, Livestock Sellers Association, Alhaji Yakub Oloso, said: “We were called around 8 p.m. after closing hours yesterday that our animal stalls were on fire. We thank the fire service because they came around 9 p.m., but before then, a lot of goods had been damaged, including our animals, like goats, rams and chickens.

    “About 15 shops owned by our members were affected by the fire.

    “We, therefore, appeal to the governor, Mallam AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, to have mercy upon us and come to our aid because our members whose goods were affected suffered huge losses and they need money to restart their business.’’

    Another trader, who gave his name as Saliu Kelebe, called on the government to assist them with trading capital , saying: “The loss is too much, we beg the government to help us.”

    A woman trader in the market, identified as Iya Abu who was a provision dealer, said she lost three refrigerators to the inferno, adding that she had restocked her shop on Thursday while the  incident occurred on Friday night.

    Chairman, Ilorin West Local Government, Babatunde Ladan, during a visit to the market, said: “I sympathise with the traders for the loss of their wares in the fire incident. I’m sure that the Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, who is our father, will come to our rescue and will surely provide succour to the traders in this market.”
