  • C of O ‘ready in 30 days’ as Kwara Governor launches digital land administration

C of O ‘ready in 30 days’ as Kwara Governor launches digital land administration

Kwara turned the page on manual processing of land matters on Monday as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq unveiled an automation system which enables applicants to get titles for their land between two weeks and 30 working days — once all conditions have been met.

“Today marks another bold step in our commitment to innovation, transparency, and efficiency in public service delivery,” the Governor said at the launch of the Kwara State Geographic Land Information Service (KW-GIS)-based digital land information system, in Ilorin.

“For decades, the process of land administration in many states, including Kwara, has been characterized by manual records, inefficiencies, and delays that discourage investors, slow down property transactions, and create room for abuse.

“Our administration made a decision to change that narrative. The KW-GIS Digital Land Information System represented a complete transformation in how land records are managed in Kwara State. It provides a modern, automated, transparent platform that ensures every parcel of land in the state is digitally captured, documented, and easily retrievable.”

He said the new system eliminates duplication and loss of land records, shortens processing time for C of O and other land documents, enhances revenue generation, and promotes investor confidence by ensuring the certainty and security of land ownership.

He called the launch a milestone in the state’s ease of doing business reforms, urging all stakeholders to embrace the new system.

Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of the Kwara State Ease of Doing Business Council (EODBC), Dr Hauwa Nuru, said the initiative positions the state as a national leader in several World Bank–supported programmes, including NG-CARES, SABER, and the HOPE Program (HOPE EDU, HOPE PHC, and HOPE GOV).

“This outstanding progress is a testament to Your Excellency’s unwavering commitment to institutional reforms, accountability, and sustainable development,” she said.

Nuru commended members of the Council for their dedication, and the KW-GIS team and consultant and  technical partners for working tirelessly to bring the vision to life.

Executive Chairman, State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), Mrs Folashade Omoniyi, said the new system “bridges longstanding gaps in land administration, documentation, and record accuracy by leveraging modern technology to establish a transparent and efficient land management system”.

She said the integration of KW-IRS online payment platform with KW-GIS system further complements the digital advancement.

“Investors, titleholders, and the general public can now register land, process CofO, obtain building approvals, and make all related payments online, seamlessly and transparently reducing bureaucracy and strengthening public trust,” she said.

“In tandem with this progress, the State Government has reviewed and harmonized existing laws governing land administration to align with modern standards. These reforms guarantee clarity, fairness, and efficiency in property rights, title documentation, and investment transactions.”

Executive Secretary, KW-GIS, Alhaji Sulyman Abdulkareem, said the launch of the digital platform is a milestone in the history of land administration.

Speaking on the Kwara Smart City project, Abdulkareem promised to digitize the land and ensure that all necessary documents are archived for future generations, saying this will guide against encroachment.

He also commended AbdulRazaq for approving the release of N560 million as compensation for parts of the land acquired for the Smart City project.

Project Consultant, Dr Paul Adepelumi, said with digitalization of KW-GIS the administration has set a new national standard, explaining that the digital platform will ease online application for land, make the processing of C of O faster and more efficient, and remove all forms of bottleneck in land administration.

“KWGIS is not just a platform but a revolution. It takes us from files to digital records, from delay to speed, and from opacity to transparency,” he said.

Project Manager for the digital initiative, Engr Ali Muhammad Kalot, said the digital geographic land information service has some features and advantages, including digital parcel mapping and querying, land records integration, generation of revenue, as well as user access and security control, among others.

He said over 200 staff of KW-GIS have been trained and equipped to handle all processes.

“We have scanned more than 1000 layouts. We have also digitized all the plots in our KW-GIS platform, numbering about 20,000 plots. And this is a key achievement of our project,” he said.

  • Kwara governor hailed for dropping senatorial ambition for incumbent

KWARA State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has been hailed for dropping his senatorial ambition for one of Senate President Bukola Saraki’s die-hard loyalists, Senator Abdulrafiu Ibrahim.

After a week of dilly-dallying, including a high-level meeting in Abuja, Senator Ibrahim confirmed yesterday that he has been given the slot.

Abdulrafiu, who praised the magnanimity of the governor for relinquishing the ticket, said he was grateful to Saraki for granting the request of his people.

The concession of the ticket to Ibrahim put a seal on the controversy within Kwara State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) after the loss of the November 17 by-election in Ekiti/Oke Ero/Isin/Irepodun Federal Constituency to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although Saraki bowed to pressure from PDP governors and some eminent Nigerians in conceding the ticket to the governor, he was upset by the outcome of the by-election, which made the PDP to suffer defeat in an area dominated by Igbomina/Ekiti kinsmen of the governor.

According to a top source, who spoke in confidence, the SenatePresident was not prepared to “take anything for granted because Kwara South Senatorial District is strategic to PDP’s electoral chances in 2019.

“The decision to snatch away the ticket from the governor was not really based on political exigencies but more of anger because we allowed Ekiti/Oke Ero/Isin/Irepodun Federal Constituency to slip away from PDP to APC.

“We got an early jolt for 2019 polls and we have to re-strategise for the main election.”

The Nation had exclusively reported that Saraki might move against the governor.

In  a statement last night, Ibrahim confirmed that the slot has been retrieved from the governor and given to him.

The senator said: “I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the national leader of our great party and Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for granting the request of the leadership of Ibolo division of Kwara South that the senatorial ticket be retained in the axis.

“Ultimately, this was done in the interest of fairness and equity, as both Ekiti and Igbomina divisions of Kwara South have both produced senators, who served two terms in the Senate.

“I also thank all the stakeholders within Kwara South and the state at large for their efforts and support. Likewise, I extend my profound appreciation to my constituents, party members and advocates for their support and confidence in me. I will always be grateful to you all.”

He, however, clarified that the  retrieval of the ticket from the governor had nothing to do with November 17 defeat of PDP.

The statement added: “The decision of Governor Ahmed to cede the senatorial ticket following the pleas by Ibolo elders is highly commendable and this has further affirmed his reputation as an advocate of fairness, equity and inclusion. This is indeed leadership by example.

“I think it is also important I clarify that Governor Ahmed’s decision to relinquish the ticket has nothing to do with the November 17 by-election in Ekiti/Oke Ero/Isin/Irepodun Federal Constituency. The outcome of an election that was characterised by rigging, harassment and intimidation of voters could not have led the governor to withdraw from the senatorial race.

“You will recall that last week, on the floor of the Senate, I raised concerns about the conduct of the poll and the use of security operatives by the Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to intimidate voters as well as harass members of the PDP.

“It was on this basis the Senate directed its Committee on Police and National Intelligence to investigate the matter. I have no doubt that the PDP would have won the election if it was conducted in a free, fair and credible manner.”

  • Kwara gov drops Senate ticket under pressure

    •Why I am quitting the race–Ahmed

The Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday admitted that he might forego his senatorial ticket for Kwara South Senatorial District for the incumbent Sen. Abdulrafiu Ibrahim. He said the talks within the Dr. Bukola Saraki political family for him to step aside had been on for a while.  He clarified that forsaking the ticket had nothing to do with the November 17 by-election into Ekiti/ Oke Ero/ Isin/ Irepodun Federal Constituency.

But findings confirmed that Saraki, who is the governor’s godfather, directed Ahmed to forget his ambition after the defeat. Although Saraki had initially favoured Abdulrafiu but Ahmed sent many PDP governors to his godfather to concede the ticket to him. The governor’s first political test after securing the ticket was election into the Federal constituency which was fatal for PDP.

A PDP source said: “Our leader has taken the senatorial ticket away from the governor because he cannot afford to take any risk. The slot is now for the present occupant of the seat, Sen. Abdulrafiu Ibrahim. What we are trying to do is to give the governor a soft landing. We do not want it to appear as if the governor is being humiliated.  To get the ticket, the governor sent emissaries to our leader. It has now turned out that the shoe is bigger than him because 2019 poll is really testy for us.

“Our leader has been in the state in the past 48 hours to put things in order since he will serve as the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council of PDP. If you leave your pot unwatched, your food will get burnt.”

But Governor Ahmed has denied speculations that the Kwara South Senatorial ticket has been “retrieved from him on account of the last House of Representatives bye-election results in the state.”  Ahmed, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, described as “politically motivated mischief the rumours that he has been asked to step down due to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s loss of the Ekiti/ Oke Ero/ Irepodun bye-election.

The statement said: “The Governor said, on the contrary, consultation had been going on before the November 17 elections within the political family to consider the request by the leadership of the Ibolo division of Kwara South, from where the current Senator hails, for a second tenure at the Senate

“Furthermore, he said that the ongoing consultation was based on the view that the Igbomina and Ekiti divisions had successfully served two terms in the Senate as opposed to the Ibolo division whose representative had served only one term in the Senate.

“While describing the last by-election as a farcical exercise marked by voter intimidation, widespread disenfranchisement and the use of security agencies against PDP supporters and members, Ahmed said the result of such a disputed election could, therefore, not have formed the basis of a review of his candidacy for the Kwara South Senatorial elections. He assured that PDP will win the general elections in the state as the people of Kwara have resolved never to allow such harassment by security agents again.”

A separate statement by the State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Tunde Ashaolu, confirmed that the party was weighing options on the demand of Ibolo people to give a second term ticket to the incumbent Sen. Abdulrafiu Ibrahim. The statement said: “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has been drawn to a misleading media report insinuating that there is panic in the camp of Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki and that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed is under pressure to withdraw from the Kwara South senatorial race as a result of the aftermath of last Saturday’s by-election in Ekiti/Oke-Ero/Isin/Irepodun federal constituency.

“This is totally untrue, ridiculous and a deliberate mischief orchestrated by some unscrupulous elements and political jobbers who are bent on causing confusion within the party and among our leaders. For the avoidance of doubt, there is no tension whatsoever within the fold of the PDP in Kwara State and there is no pressure on Governor Ahmed to drop his senatorial ambition because of the outcome of the recently held bye-election in the state.

“The party however, notes that there are ongoing consultations and pleas by leadership of the Ibolo axis of Kwara South, where the current senator representing the senatorial district, Dr Rafiu Ibrahim hails from, for the party’s senatorial ticket to be retained in the axis in the interest of fairness and equity in the distribution political offices within the district.

“It is instructive to note that these consultations and pleas preceded the November 17 by-election and are based on the understanding that the Igbomina and Ekiti divisions of Kwara South had produced senators who served two terms in the Senate as opposed to the Ibolo division whose representative had only served one term.

“This was the sole observation raised by the stakeholders during all their consultative meetings with the national leader of our party and Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and other leaders of the PDP in the State.

“It is, therefore, ridiculous for anybody to think that the outcome of an election that does not reflect the will of the people, as it was marred with widespread irregularities including intimidation of voters, ballot box snatching and illegal arrest of PDP members, could lead to the withdrawal of Governor Ahmed from the senatorial race.

“The party thereby urges members and supporters of the PDP as well as the general public to disregard the fake report which was sponsored and planted in the media by unscrupulous elements and fifth columnists.

“Ahmed is a prominent leader of our party and has always placed the party’s interest above his personal interest. More so, he has provided exemplary leadership since he assumed office in 2011 and has created enduring legacies that have placed Kwara on a path of sustainable development.

“Among the enduring legacies of Governor Ahmed, which are products of foresight and vision, are the establishment of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) and the Kwara Infrastructural Development Fund (IF-K). Without doubt, these initiatives have had great impacts on the development of the State.”

  • Senatorial ticket: Kwara governor may lock horns with Saraki’s godson

•Ahmed may lose right of first refusal

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of  Kwara State yesterday obtained the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) nomination form for the senatorial primaries in Kwara South.

Ahmed who recently defected from the  All Progressives Congress(APC)  alongside Senate President Bukola Saraki is expected to slug it out in the primaries with Saraki’s  godson, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim.

It was expected that the governor would be given the right of first refusal for the ticket on account of his defection from the APC.

It was gathered that some associates of the governor are upset by the development.

He is said to have been calming them down.

The fate of the governor is causing ripples in PDP in the state.

Confirming his purchase of the from yesterday on his Twitter handle, Ahmed said:”In response to calls by my people and in keeping with my strong desire to upscale the excellent work we have done in all three zones of the state, through effective, purposeful representation, I have picked up the PDP nomination form for Kwara South Senatorial District.

“Besides demonstrating our commitment to the well-being of our people through affordable health insurance, @KwaraCare testifies to value of continuity in governance.”

A party source said Saraki is  trying to live up to his pledge to “ensure fairness” for old and new PDP members in the state.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that Sen. Rafiu, who is a close ally of Saraki and one of his strategists in the Senate, has obtained nomination form for the Senatorial seat when the governor was expecting the ticket to be his as of right.

A well placed party source said: “All attempts by the governor to earn the ticket automatically have failed.

“Associates of the governor are insisting that  the agreement reached with  the Liyel Imoke Committee should be applicable to the governor. All defecting governors have been given the right of first refusal.

“Some PDP stalwarts are also seeking ticket concession for Ahmed for keeping the home front for Saraki, with untainted loyalty, in the face of hostility at the centre.

“Any occasion the governor goes to these days, his supporters chant “Senator lola,” meaning ‘Our Senator tomorrow.’

“But those opposed to senatorial ticket for the governor claim that he has no legislative experience unlike Sen. Rafiu who was in the House of Assembly and House of Representatives before moving up the ladder to the Senate.

“Records have also shown that Sen. Rafiu has performed creditably and done a lot for his constituents in the district.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “The governor is also rated as unpopular in the Senatorial District, especially among his own people, forcing him to be meeting with different communities in Irepodun, Ifelodun, Oke Ero, and Ekiti local government areas in the last four weeks.”

But associates of Ahmed   say most governors who left for the Senate never had legislative experience.

A source said:”With two terms of eight years, the governor (who is from Ifelodun Local Government Area) will also be short changing Offa-Oyun Local Government Areas (Ibolo) if he is given the  senatorial ticket. Conceding the ticket to him might prove fatal for PDP’s victory in the state.

“But there appears to be no end in sight to the stalemate because Sen. Rafiu has collected the nomination form also, a development which has caused disquiet in the camp of the governor.”

The governor is said to have been sending emissaries, including his fellow governors, to Saraki to prevail on Rafiu to forego his return to the Senate.

A top source in PDP said:  “The Senate President and most of our party leaders are in  a dilemma on how to resolve the logjam over the Kwara South Senatorial District ticket.

“It will be dangerous to deny the governor the ticket because he can rock the boat with the power of incumbency. And at the same time, Sen. Rafiu is a worthy godson.

“We are all confused but we are waiting for how Saraki will untie the knot. What we heard was that Saraki has asked the governor to go for primaries with Rafiu but we regard it as a parlour talk.

“It is a slippery case and if it is not well-handled, it can cause a setback for us.”

A source in Rafiu’s camp said: “The Senator has obtained the nomination form. I think he read Saraki’s body language and went to collect the form.

“Since the PDP started selling forms, Saraki has never asked any aspirant not to obtain any in line with his policy to ensure fairness to all whether old or new PDP. Yet, he cannot run away from looming crisis in any part of the state.”

The senator also confirmed his own purchase of the nomination form on his Twitter handle.

He said: “The general elections are here already. With declarations hitting us from all sides, my people have ascertained their position and they’ve echoed it very loudly to my hearing: “We want you to continue the unprecedented good work.”

  • APC will produce next Kwara governor, says Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, spoke with reporters in Lagos on the achievements of President Mohammadu Buhari, defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and preparations for next year’s elections.

What is your reaction to the gale of defections in the APC. Was it an event you were expecting or it took you by surprise?

I don’t think anybody who has been a close watcher or observer of this political landscape should be taken aback by the defections. I think that it even came so late, we shouldn’t be surprised. A Yoruba adage says, ‘If we build a house on spittle, the first fog will demolish it’. The foundation for what you see today was laid the day the Senate President forced himself on the party as Senate President. That was the day the day the foundation for what you are witnessing today was laid because traditionally it is the party’s prerogative who becomes the presiding officers in the two houses. Here we were met with a fait accompli when Dr. Bukola Saraki, against the wishes of the party, did the unthinkable by aligning with the opposition and making them an offer they could not refuse.

I can’t quite remember the number but in a situation whereby almost the entire 40 plus Senators in PDP voted for him. So he needed only a minority from the APC. So we were all waiting for Mr. President to come and address us on this issue at the International Conference Centre, it was announced that he (Bukola) has emerged as the Senate President.

From that day, we know we had two problems. Number, we had a Senate President who imposed himself on the party and to make it worse as an insurance, he arranged for an opposition person to be Deputy Senate President and that makes it impossible for us to remove him. ‘If you remove me, you are going to have a PDP Senate President’. I think from that day we had a problem. I think this is not a surprise at all. Of course you could see the behaviour of the National Assembly since then. We have a National Assembly in which we had a clear majority in both houses but which treated the Executive with contempt and who actually slowed down the work of government. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, our budgets were delayed. We can understand 2015 budget because we came in, in the middle of the year. But 2016, 2017, the earliest we got our budgets was June. Key appointments, nominations and confirmations for key organizations that could move the government forward like the CBN, like the NDIC, were delayed. Really, it couldn’t have been worse if the PDP had a majority in the National Assembly.

Some are also blaming the APC for its refusal to zone those positions before and after the elections were won and lost…

It is not exactly the same thing. In 2011, there were two aspirants from the PDP. Each of them knew that they needed the opposition to emerge. So the kind of horse-trading that took place in 2011 is normal in any democracy since the party did not succeed in getting one candidate. Now when they approached us, we looked at the offer and we believed that the other party didn’t do as much. What we did in 2011 in helping him to come to power was a normal thing in democracy because once you don’t have absolute majority, you would need the support of the other smaller parties. And in 2011 we were the biggest minority in the House of Reps. The difference is this. Tambuwal did not destroy his party in the process. He didn’t offer Gbajabiamila Deputy Speaker, that is the difference. I don’t know what took place in PDP then. In our own case we tried to get all parties together, we called meetings which were boycotted by their group and at the end of the day when we realized this thing was getting so bad, Mr. President was to address all of us. We were waiting for Mr. President to come with majority of our Senators there when it was announced. So it is not the same thing.

What is the difference between Tambuwal’s defection in December 2014 and Saraki’s defection this time? At that time you issued a statement as the party’s spokesman that it was justifiable and he needed not resign. Now, the party is asking Saraki to resign. What is the difference?

You see in 2014, the political climate was completely different. By 2013, three major political parties and factions of two had collapsed into a new party. We had ANPP, CPC and ACN and a faction of APGA that came together to become a new party. In 2014, there were internal wranglings within the PDP and they decided to defect to meet us in APC. Even now nobody is saying people can’t defect. Mr. President said it that many of the people who defected did so for selfish purposes because many of them want to come back to the National Assembly but many of them too when they were coming reached understanding with their local people as to the arrangement. You know a Senator sometime represents up to eight local governments, sometimes 10 and there are some unwritten rules that if this side of the Senatorial district produces a Senator for four years, it has to go to the other side in another four years. So many of them are facing re-election problem because they can’t go back to their constituency and say they want to run again. At the party level they know themselves. If you are going to do a primary to be a Senator and you have agreed that it has to come from Shomolu this time around and Mushin says it wants it, they will tell Mushin it can’t get it and they won’t vote for it. So there are so many reasons why some of them defected and probably they can get the ticket in another party. Defection is as old as politics itself even in the First Republic.

The fundamental thing is that for us, it would have been better that they left a long time earlier because they have strangulated this government for too long. When you are now being betrayed by your own party is more painful because we can’t fight back as much as we want to fight back.

I just want to establish that the foundation of what you are seeing today was laid as far back as the day he became Senate President.

As you are going into election, what do you want to tell Nigerians that the Buhari administration has done that would warrant them to renew its tenancy?

We have delivered all promises we made. We came in and we promised we were going to fight insecurity. At that time, the major threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria was the Boko Haram insurgency and despite what anybody says, we have decimated Boko Haram. We brought Boko Haram under complete control because when we came in on May 29, 2015, 24 local governments in the North East, an area three times the size of Lebanon, were under the effective control of Boko Haram and what this means is that they were running the administration. As a matter of fact, once we got to Maiduguri, that was the end of Bornu State. If you move outside, either to Kaure, Konduga or Bama, they were under the control of Boko Haram. By 2014, 2015, nobody in Abuja could sleep with his two eyes closed. They came and attacked This Day headquarters with casualties, they attacked the UN Headquarters, they attacked the IGP office, Nyanya park was bombed twice, they were active in Suleja, Kaduna, Sokoto, Plateau, Nasarrawa, Kogi. As a matter of fact, there was hardly any state in the North that Boko Haram was not operating. It was nipped in the bud in Kwara.

But today, there is relative peace. We have been able to recover all territories and today no single inch of Nigerian territory is under the Boko Haram control. Yes, there have been suicide bombings, that is what terrorism is all about. A couple of weeks ago in US, we saw terrorist attack. About a month or two months ago, we saw what happened in Texas. Terrorists killed many children. This is not a sign of renewed threat rather it is a sign of desperation and weakness. Look at the regularity it used to occur and now. It is all about intelligence gathering. Yes, you would talk about herdsmen-farmer clashes, was it not something we inherited. The first farmers-herders’ clash was in 1947 even before Nigeria became independent but over the years we have been able to manage it.

What has aggravated the farmers-herders’ clash today is the government’s position, its stand on fighting corruption.

    How?

We found out that in Benue State in particular that some people facing corruption charges are the ones that have armed Militia. Is it not interesting that Terkula that was arrested is actually a government appointee? And since his arrest, these killings have gone down. The suspects arrested for killing those priests were not Fulani herdsmen. They are militia men from Benue State.

Now we have politicians who are afraid that any re-election of Buhari, they would end up in jail and they are now fueling this herdsmen crisis especially in Benue state.

In Zamfara, one of the senators accused the government of sponsoring the attacks. What is your reaction to that?

I would not know the validity of that allegation, it might be purely political, it might be real. It just confirms my position that in Benue state in particular that corrupt politicians who are facing trial are also aiding and abetting this. When you look at Benue state, this is a state where civil servants have not been paid any salary for 11 months. So it is quite easy for the governor to focus people’s attention on the herdsmen-farmer crisis so that they would have no time to think about the fact that they have not been paid.

What future for Kwara APC, following the defection of the Senate President, the governor and members of the National and State Assemblies?

What we have today is some members of APC decamping to the PDP. I say some members because many members have refused to go but we have gained more from those who say rather than stay in the same party with Bukola Saraki, they would rather come to APC. I was home last weekend primarily to reassure our people that there is no cause for alarm. I was amazed at the kind of reception I got. At the time I went home, Dr. Bukola Saraki was yet to announce his resignation from the party. As far as the people of Kwara State are concerned, it was as if finally, the state was being liberated. The excitement today in Kwara State is akin to how Nigeria felt on the eve of Independence.

I have received and consulted with delegations. As a matter of fact, I am meeting on the 19th of this month if it is convenient for me with about 200 leaders of Kwara PDP ranging from former Speaker in the Second Republic, Community Leaders across the state. To answer your question, I think APC can only go stronger in Kwara State. People have forgotten that Saraki joined APC after the merger. Merger took place 21st of July 2013, they came in 2014 to come and join. The moment he joined the APC, the former ACN, former ANPP, former CPC members who are in APC, many of them left APC because they could not be in the same camp with him. So what we are witnessing today in Kwara State is like a liberation and from the support I have received so far including the entire leadership of the party led by the Chairman, Akogun Oyedepo Iyiola who met with me and the National Chairman with 17 other leaders including Professor Oba Abdulraheem, Senator S.S Ajibola, all the three Senatorial district chairmen of the PDP in the state gives me confidence that Saraki’s days in dominating Kwara politics are limited. I also met with the 16 PDP candidates in the last local government elections in my home town in Oro on Monday and those 16 candidates actually claimed they won the Local Government elections but something is clear they changed the status quo. They had a rally on Wednesday in Ilorin and everywhere was a lockdown. You see there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Already from the back channel, some of the so-called decampees are reaching out to us. it is on record that some of them can’t go back to their constituencies in Kwara especially in Kwara North.

The truth of the matter is that the APC in Kwara today can only be stronger, the era of one man dominating the party is over. Kwarans, young and old, male and females are itching to take possession of the party and I am very confident that we are going to route him in the next election.

The defector said the Federal Government abandoned their states in appointments. The Senate President said out of 200 appointments made, himself and Dogara were not allotted anything. Tambuwal said he cannot find anything the Federal Government has done in his state. Do you think President Muhammadu Buhari government has not done enough in those states? Do you see the President winning in Kano, Kwara, Sokoto, Benue giving the developments in those states?

I think it is a blatant lie that Kwara State was not considered in appointments. There are 26 appointees to boards, parastatals, either as members or DG to Kwara State and of these 26, I recommended only two. The other 24 were done by Dr. Bukola Saraki.

    Who did you recommend?

The DG of NBC and the GM of National Theatre. We are not even talking about ambassadorial post, which I absolutely had no input from. When I give you the list, you will know that all other appointees are his people.

In terms of development, the arterial road of Ilorin, Jebba, Mokwa, Birnin Gwari road is 80 per cent completed. It is one of the major roads that links the state. On the other hand, it is this same government that awarded the contract for Lokoja-Omu Aran-Ilorin road. In terms of housing, we are building many two bedroom houses in Ilorin. Again, in terms of appointment, one of the chairmen of parastatals, is the out-gone chairman of APC, Ishola Balogun Fulani. So it is blatant lie.

On whether we can win in Sokoto, Kano and Kwara. People forget very easily that in 2014, in Lagos Buhari roundly defeated both Atiku and Kwankwaso at the primaries here. Now in Kano any contest today between Buhari and anybody, Buhari is going to win. I am not in doubt about it. In Sokoto 12 out of 30 House of Assembly members refused to go with Tambuwal, that is very significant including the Deputy Governor and you can see that the next day people went on the streets in Sokoto sweeping them out. Benue is dicey but people forget that it was Senator George Akume that brought Ortom. When the whole of the North Central was in PDP, Akume fought and won election on the platform of APC.

In Kwara, I am very confident that…the only thing that can make us lose Kwara is if we don’t manage the situation well – ego and ambition and that is why the first thing I said was that I am not contesting for anything so that I can be a honest broker.

  • APC has failed to meet our aspirations, says Kwara governor

Youths, artisans, local government chairmen and associations yesterday urged Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to take them out of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They spoke in Ilorin, the state capital, during a meeting with the governor.

Ali Baba, who spoke on behalf of the youths said: “Your government has empowered and prioritised the youths. Therefore, the only structure we know in Kwara is (Bukola) Saraki. Everywhere you, our leaders go, we are with you.”

Leader of the market women Idiat Lambe said: “Take us to where our welfare will be guaranteed and our expectations met.”

Ahmed said: “We are gathered here to consult with our supporters, market women, artisans, youths and women on how to guarantee our people’s interest and our state’s progress.”

He said the APC had failed them, adding that “Our leader Senate President Bukola Saraki will soon come home to announce where we will go. APC has not met our expectations.”

The governor added: “Stakeholders have come to tell us here today that you don’t want to remain in APC. You have told us that they have not met your aspirations as a people in APC. You have come to tell us that you want us to move on to a new platform that will give us room to meet our aspirations for the good of Kwarans.

“By the grace of God almighty, you will have a response very soon and very clear. But one is as clear as crystal you the stakeholders have told us to move out of the APC and because we run an inclusive process, that is why we have come to sit here and seek your opinion which you have expressed.

“And certainly your decision is our decision. So whatever you want is what we will do. God will guide us aright.”

The governor recalled how key stakeholders in the ruling APC in the state built the party in 2014 alongside other notable Nigerians with high expectations but were disappointed about the failure of the government at national level to address insecurity, economy and unemployment challenges confronting the nation.

He said: “Ee formed APC together in 2014 with the hope to meet the needs and aspirations of the people in critical areas of our national life”.

He said the leadership of the APC had failed to intervene on critical issues affecting the party and its members, pointing out that injustice within the party is unbearable.

  • Kwara governor: no link with suspects

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has cautioned against being linked with the suspected cult-killers in the state, some of who have been arrested and transferred to the Police Headquarters in Abuja.

The governor described as “false and misleading”, the insinuations linking him and Senate President Bukola Saraki with the suspected cultists.

On Wednesday, the police moved six suspected cultists arrested in Ilorin to Abuja.

Saraki said the move was intended to implicate him and the Kwara governor by Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris “to settle scores” with him because of the resolution of the Senate that the IG is unfit to remain in office.

But the IG dismissed his claim as “a ruse and unfounded”, capable of truncating the police investigation into killings by suspected cult members.

In a statement by his Media Adviser Muyideen Akorede, the governor said the political leadership in the state “has never used violence as a political tool”, adding that neither him nor the Senate President  nor any of their aides is linked with the suspected cultists or their alleged activities.

He also denied any knowledge of or any intention to harm any individual and referred the general public “to the parade of the suspects by the state commissioner of police, Mr. Aminu Pai Saleh on Thursday, May 10, 2018 in Ilorin, during which he announced that the suspects were arrested for alleged murder and membership of cult groups but made no mention of any confessional statement linking their activities to any sponsors. “

The governor described the alleged killings as the outcome of clashes between rival cults in the state as most victims were been identified by security agencies as members of cult groups.

The statement said “the growing problem of cultism and cult-related criminalities formed the basis of the governor’s charge to Kwara State Commissioner of Police Saleh to focus on ending the menace on his resumption last month.

According to him, “the state government sees cultism as a serious security issue requiring urgent attention and has accordingly amended the State Cultism Law to prescribe stiffer penalties for convicts and those who aid and abet them, besides providing operational support to all security agencies in the state in their fight against all forms of criminalities, including cultism.”

The Governor warned that cultism is a serious security challenge which should neither “be trivialised nor turned into a political tool nor be treated with levity”.

Also yesterday, the Kwara State House of Assembly flayed the transfer of six suspected cult members to Abuja which it described as “an afterthought”.

The House added that it was an attempt to manipulate the criminal justice system to implicate  Saraki and Governor Ahmed.

The legislature added that many other suspected cultists had their matters pending before the judiciary.

A member representing Ilorin North West Constituency, Abdul Rafiu Abdul Rahman, moved the motion, titled ”IGP versus  KWSG: A dangerous attempt to undermine the fight against crimes, especially cultism in Kwara State”.

Reading the resolutions of the House, Speaker Ali Ahmad said that the call became expedient to prevent unnecessary disharmony between the state Ministry of Justice as prosecuting agents, the police and other investigative authorities which, according to House, will affect the fight against crime and cultism in the state and the general maintenance of law and order.

The House called on the National Assembly to alert the United Nations Human Rights Commission on the dangers of misusing the criminal Justice system in targeting independent voices in a democratic system of governance.
