    Police arrest man in Kwara for alleged N300m political appointment scam

    The Kwara State Police Command has arrested one Adeola Badru for allegedly defrauding a businessman, Joseph Olugbenga, of N300 million under the pretext of securing him a federal government appointment.

    Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Ilorin on Friday. He said the suspect, who posed as a seasoned politician with strong political connections, promised to facilitate Olugbenga’s appointment to the South West Development Commission.

    Based on trust, he said, the complainant released, in tranches, the sum of N300 million to the suspect, believing his promise to facilitate his appointment into the SWDC.

    “Subsequently, the suspect blocked all communication channels, preventing the complainant from reaching him.

    “Upon receipt of the petition, operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department swung into action and traced the suspect to his hideout in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he was arrested.

    “During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily admitted to the crime. The command is carrying out further investigation, and at the conclusion of our findings, the suspect will be duly charged in court,” said Ojo.

    The command urged members of the public to be wary of fraudsters parading themselves as political powerbrokers, noting that no genuine appointment process requires such payments.

    The Kwara State Police Command has disclosed that it has not effected any arrest in connection with the murder of ex-Federal Works Controller, AbdulRazaq Ajani in Ilorin, the state capital.

    The suspected assailants numbering about four reportedly hacked the victim to death in the full glare of his family members.

    The incident happened moments after Ajani returned home with his wife and children from a trip to his hometown, Offa.

    The incident allegedly occurred at about 3 p.m. at Dele Gege Street, off Awolowo Road, in the Tanke area.

    Spokesperson of the command Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi in a statement said:  “No arrest has been made as of this moment. Our detectives are working assiduously to unravel this tragic incident.

    Police dismiss three over ‘murder’ of poly student in Kwara

    Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three policemen for alleged murder of a student.

    The deceased, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, was on September 4, this year shot dead by trigger-happy policemen at Fate, Ilorin.

    In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said after an investigation and an internal disciplinary trial, the three officers –AP/No 233828 INSPR. Abiodun Kayode, AP/No 287410 INSPR. James Emmanuel, and F/No 497868 SGT. Oni Philip – were found guilty of offences ranging from leaving beat, corrupt practices to unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority.

    “Consequently, they have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, with effect from 4th October, 2024,’’ he added.

    They would be arraigned in court soon, he said.

    LG poll: Kwara police restrict vehicular movement

    Ahead of today’s local government elections, Kwara State police command has restricted vehicular movement throughout the state from 12am and 6pm today (Saturday).

    The police said the measure has been put in place to ensure the security and smooth conduct of the election.

    Police spokesperson, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, however said exceptions would be given to persons rendering essential services, including accredited electoral officials, authorized media personnel, electoral observers and emergency responders.

    She said that armed security personnel on VIP protection/escort duties have been restricted from escorting their VIPs to the polling boots.

    Kwara police parade 37-year-old suspected killer hotelier

    Kwara State Police command has paraded a 37 -year -old member of Eiye Confraternity for allegedly killing a 43-year-old hotelier, Anthony Kayode Balogun, in Ilorin.

    Anthony was killed by gunmen suspected to be cultists on August 8, 2024 in front of his hotel located in Olunlade area of the Ilorin metropolis.

    The suspect whose other two accomplices are on the run is Abolarin Samuel Idowu aka Sam Caro.

    Parading the suspect, the state Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya said: “Abolarin Samuel Idowu was arrested at his hideout near Conoil Filling Station in the Italamu area of Ilorin.

    “A search conducted at the time of his arrest led to the recovery of a locally fabricated gun and three live cartridges.

    “The suspect admitted to being a member of the notorious Eiye secret cult. Further investigation revealed that Abolarin Samuel Idowu, along with his accomplices Alowonle (aka Aloo) and Samuel (aka Sam Febee-Kay), was responsible for the murder of Anthony Kayode Balogun.

    “The killing was reportedly a revenge mission for a 2022 cult anniversary celebration during which the deceased allegedly ordered the killing of an Eiye Confraternity member named Abbay.

    “Additional searches at various criminal hideouts led to the recovery of other exhibits such as two locally made shotguns, one cut-to-size locally made gun, one multipurpose battle axe, eight live cartridges, one locally made sword, one cutlass, one pair of pliers and two bottles of an unknown liquid, suspected to be a hard drug.

    “Despite these advances, challenges were encountered during subsequent operations. On August 18 and 19, 2024, tactical teams faced significant resistance from other cult members while attempting to arrest additional suspects and recover further evidence.

  • Kwara police justify arrest of serving senator

    The Kwara State Police Command yesterday justified the arrest of the senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District, Dr Rafiu Ibrahim.

    The command added that the senator, who doubles as the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in today’s election, was arrested in connection with the bloody shootings in Ojoku, Oyun Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.

    Addressing reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital in preparation for today’s presidential and National Assembly elections, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Kayode Egbetokun, said that the shooting incident led to loss of one life.

    He added that in the process, six persons were also injured, and they are still in the hospital.

    Representatives of the Army, Air Force and the Civil Defence Corps were in attendance at the joint press briefing.

    He said the Air Force helicopter had been hovering around the state capital on air surveillance.

    He said: “You have seen the Air Force helicopter moving around. It is in the air for aerial surveillance. It is for your protection. There is no need for any panic,” he said.

    “It is true that we have a senator in our custody and his arrest was made in connection with the incident at Ojoku on Tuesday, 19th of this month.

    “Don’t forget; a life was lost in that incident. That cannot happen and we just fold our arms.

    “Let me again reiterate our resolve to be fair to all. And I am assuring that no innocent person will be arrested. And in the event that any innocent person is arrested, the person will be released immediately.”

    He added: “We are however, jolted by two incidents that happened in the last few days. On Tuesday 19th of this month, at the palace of Olojoku of Ojoku, an ugly incident occurred.

    “One of the senatorial candidates for the election was in the palace of the monarch for a visit. Unfortunately, armed thugs attacked his convoy.

    “At the end of it, one person was declared dead and six people injured. The injured people are still receiving treatment in the hospital.

    “While we were still managing that, yesterday (Thursday) when the Vice President visited us, something unfortunate happened.

    “As the convoy of the Vice President left Isale-Aluko, the crowd behind was shot at by a yet-to-be-identified person. At the end of it, two people were injured and they are receiving treatment in the hospital.

    “Eight persons have been arrested in connection with the Ojoku killings and the Isale-Aluko incident. More of these suspects will still be arrested and they will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

    “The eight arrested are undergoing investigation.

    “Let me add that when we carry out arrests, we don’t consider the party those arrested belong to.

    “Criminal suspects are treated as criminal suspects. We don’t even want to know the party they belong. We are security agents.

    “We are neutral and non-partisan and we have resolved to continue to maintain our neutrality.

    “I assure all members of the public that adequate security deployment for the conduct of this election has been made.

    “We are committed to nothing but hitch-free election. We are committed to the protection of lives and property.

    “Law-abiding citizens who are eligible should please come out and exercise their civic rights.”

    On the allegation that security agents are used to harass the opposition, Mr. Egbetokun said”that has been the usual rumour. Let me tell you, before this election, there was no arrest by any of the security agencies.

    “If the botched election had held, no arrest would have been made. It will be unfortunate for anybody to now consider the arrests we have made as an attempt to intimidate the people in opposition.

    “We don’t know who is in opposition and we don’t want to know.”

  • Kwara police confirm attack on APC senatorial candidate, others

    The Kwara state police command on Wednesday confirmed the attack on the campaign train of the Kwara South senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Lola Ashiru by suspected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) thugs loyal to the PDP Kwara south senatorial candidate Senator Rafiu Ibrahim in Ojoku, Oyun local government area of the state.

    Spokesperson of the command, Ajayi Okasanmi said “we received with astonishment the reported attack unleashed on Arch Lola Ashiru, the APC senatorial candidate for Kwara South and his campaign train in Ojoku, Oyun local government area of the state on Tuesday evening.

    “Immediately the report was received, the Commissioner of police Kwara state Kayode Egbetokun dispatched to the scene of the attack at Ojoku a team of policemen led by the DPO Ilemona and the squadron commander
    68 PMF, Offa.

    “The teams successfully brought the situation under control, rescued the candidate unhurt and arrested suspects who were actively involved in the attack and also restored peace.

    “Manhunt for the remaining fleeing suspects had since begun, while discreet investigation of the incident is ongoing.

    “For the umpteenth time, the command is restating its commitment to the safety of lives and property of the people of Kwara State. While warning sternly that hooliganism, thuggery, unlawful possession of firearms and other dangerous weapons will be met with superior forces and suspects arrested will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

    “Political party leaders are reminded of the peace accord they signed with respect to political campaigns in the State.

    “The command is appealing to the victims of this attack and their sympathizers not to result to self help but to have confidence in the Command that justice will not only be done but will be seen to have been done in this case.”

  • Kwara police arrest couple, others with 11 human skulls

    Kwara police command on Friday paraded a couple and three others for allegedly being in possession of 11 human skulls and several human bones.

    Addressing reporters in Ilorin, the state capital, the commissioner of police, Bolaji Fafowora said eight of the human heads found at the home of the suspects were already dried while the remaining three were fresh. Investigators also found suspected human hair in possession of the suspects.

    He listed the suspects as Azeez Yakubu, Salima Azeez, Isiah Wasiu, Abubakar Isiaka and Soliu Yakubu. The chief suspect, Yakubu is 37-year old and works as a commercial driver.

    The police boss said: “Acting on intelligence available to the command about suspected ritual killings around Adewole area of Ilorin by some ritualists, detectives from the police command swooped on a building located at No. 20, Ile-Opa area of Aromadu, Adewole and one Yakubu Azeez and four other suspects were rounded up, a search was conducted in the building and 11 human skulls, several suspected human bones, a bunch of suspected human hair and other items were recovered. ”

    Some of the skulls were said to have been recovered from the ceiling where Yakubu and his wife lived while the others were recovered from the wife’s shop.

  • Kwara police parade robbery suspects

    The Kwara State Police Command yesterday paraded four robbery suspects who specialise in attacking petrol stations.

    Commissioner of Police Aminu Saleh said the gang was busted by officers in conjunction with the Inspector General of Police (IGP’s) Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

    Saleh said the gang leader, James Obaje (34), a native of Dekina in Kogi State, confessed to being a trainee and lieutenant of Zakari Yau, a political thug in Kogi State.

    Other members of the gang include Nelson Yakubu (31); Ibrahim Mutari (33) and Gboyega Olaoye (35), all from Kogi State, but resident in Ilorin, except Gbenga Olaoye who is from Kwara State.

    Saleh said: “Sequel to reports received from some filling stations within Ilorin metropolis and its suburbs, the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) deployed in Offa, arrested James Obaje. He confessed to being the leader of a gang of robbers and also a trainee and lieutenant of Zakari Yau, a political thug in Kogi State.

    “Yau was arrested in an earlier operation and his confession led to the arrest of the other gang members.

    “Exhibits recovered from the suspects include three AK-47 riffles; one K2 riffle; one Pump Action riffle; 311 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition; 286 rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition; a Blue Mazda 626 (KEY 627 DS); charms and plate numbers.”

    He added that efforts are on to arrest other members of the gang after which they would be charged to court.

    Also paraded were seven suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity, including the Vice President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.

    Saleh said: “On May 7, the command alerted the public on plans by cult groups to mark the cultism day on July 7. We also warned any person or group of persons from any such act, but being the devil’s advocate, the suspects from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, refused to heed the warning, and were arrested by the Anti-Cult Unit of the SCIID, Ilorin, while trying to initiate new members.”

  • Robbery: Police arrest seven suspects in Kwara

    The Kwara State Police Command said it has arrested seven persons in connection with Thursday’s robbery attacks in Offa.

    The state’s Commissioner of Police, Ado Lawan, disclosed this to journalists on Saturday in Ilorin, the state capital.

    He said 17 persons comprising nine police operatives and eight other persons were killed during the attacks.

    The state government has also offered to give N5 million to anyone with useful information that would lead to the arrest of the fleeing robbers.

    Lawan said five banks and one finance house were attacked by the robbers.

    He said: We have arrested seven suspects in connection with the incident. One of them was arrested at Igosun road and six others at different locations in Offa. They are helping us in investigation.”

    “Seven vehicles abandoned were recovered from the armed robbers. Details on the injured victims have not been ascertained as they are receiving treatments in different hospitals. Some rifles were carted away by the robbers.

    “In conclusion, the Inspector General of Police has ordered a full investigation into the incident and has directed his Intelligence Response Team and others to assist in getting the hoodlums arrested.

    “The command wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims while also wishing the injured quick recovery.”

    In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the state Governor, Dr. Muyideen Akorede,  the state government urged anyone with useful information on the incident to contact the state police command on the following numbers (0803 739 1280 and 0803 236 5122).

    “While we mourn our dead with a heart full of sadness, and care for the injured by paying all their medical bills, we will do everything in our power to bring the attackers to justice and ensure that never again does any community or people in our state experience such tragedy,” the statement quoted Governor Abdufattah Ahmed as saying on the incident.
