    Kwara closes Polytechnic over unrest

The Kwara State Government has ordered the closure of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, following unrest that broke out on campus over the use of the institution as a temporary orientation camp for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The directive was issued by Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq for protection of lives and property after tensions escalated and police intervened.

In a statement by the Acting Registrar, AbdulHafis Aminl, the Polytechnic management said the State Government had earlier designated the institution as a temporary NYSC orientation camp due to prevailing security challenges in the State.

It explained that during the first orientation exercise, students were on break, while during the second, academic activities had not fully resumed.

However, for the ongoing exercise, students were fully in session.

To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the management said it granted students a three- week break from Monday, January 19, 2026 to allow for the smooth conduct of the NYSC camp.

The decision, according to the statement, was met with resistance by some students who protested, citing their recent resumption from the Christmas and New Year break.

The protest led to tension at the institution’s main gate, prompting police intervention.

The management alleged that while police officers were initially deployed to disperse the crowd, some officers exceeded their brief by firing tear gas canisters into the Polytechnic premises, including student hostels.

The action reportedly affected several students and staff, while the institution’s Chief Security Officer was injured during the incident.

“In view of the development, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of the State, Mallam Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, has directed the closure of the Polytechnic to ensure the safety of lives and property of the entire Polytechnic community,” the statement said.

The management appealed to students, staff and other stakeholders to remain calm as efforts continue to engage relevant authorities to resolve the situation.

  • How we tackled cultism with 182 security personnel–Kwarapoly

The Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Alhaji Mas’ud Elelu, says the institution has succeeded in tackling cultism with the deployment of 182 security personnel.

Elelu told the News Agency of Nigeria  in Ilorin on Tuesday that cultism was a serious challenge to the polytechnic community and its environs.

He said those who were in charge of security in the school then were not well trained and could not tackle the scourge.

He further that the school’s authorities had banned the use of motorcycles by students on campus so that cult members would find it difficult to escape after perpetrating their nefarious acts.

The rector said that there were ongoing projects in the school premises in order to further improve the academic standard of the institution.

He appealed to students of higher institutions across the country to shun cultism and face their studies so they would become useful to the nation.

Kwara polytechnic debunks rumours of fee hike

Authorities of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, yesterday denied allegations of hike in the tuition fee of the school.

The rumors have generated a serious tension in the state, as some members of the public were reportedly asking the students to resist the hike while many students were reportedly preparing for a showdown with the management of the institution.

The rumour had it that a new tuition fee of N75, 000 as against N58, 000 charged the students last session has been pasted on the  portal of the school.

Both the state government and management of the institution condemned the brain behind the rumour and those allegedly inciting students to cause crisis over the matter.

The state commissioner for Information and Communications, Babatunde Ajeigbe, alongside Registrar of the Polytechnic, M.O Salami briefed briefed on the matter as representatives of students at the briefing corroborated the explanation of the authorities.

Ajeigbe who said that a government delegation led by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Amina Mohammed met with management of the institution over the matter explained that their findings showed that it was just a rumour spread by social media and about  which some people in the state were making mischief.

He said that there was no increase of fee for the returning students who are now either HND 2 or ND 2 students and this was corroborated by an HND 2 students at the meeting who said he paid the same N58,000 he paid last session when he was an HND 1 student.

Ajeigbe however explained that the institution has not yet determined what tuition fee of students with fresh admission for ND 1and HND 1 would be saying this would be determined by realities on ground.

The institution Registrar who expatiated on this said though the school has spent more money on accreditation of its courses this year it would not allow that to be a major influence on  the amount to be paid by fresh students.

Alleged N5m bribe: ICPC arraigns dropped board nominee in court

Barely two months after being dropped as a nominee into the board of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), a former Chairman of the Governing Council of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Dr. Saadu Ayinla Alanamu, has been charged for allegedly collecting  N5million bribe from a contractor.

Alanamu was arraigned with the Chief Executive Director of Namylas Nig. Ltd, Salman Sulaiman.

The two suspects are facing eight -count charge before Justice Mahmud Abdul Gafar of the Kwara State High Court 7, Ilorin.

A statement by the Spokesperson for ICPC, Mrs. Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, said the charge sheet indicated that Alanamu, who was also the Chairman of the Kwara State Polytechnic Tenders Board, allegedly collected N5million bribe from a contractor Salman Sulaiman as kickback for the award of a contract.

The statement said: “The counsel to ICPC, Sunny Ezeana, told the court that Dr. Alanamu received the bribe money through his First Bank account on 11th February, 2015 from Namylas Nig. Ltd, a company owned by Sulaiman who is also his friend.

”The court heard that Alanamu ensured that the contract for the construction and furnishing of an auditorium in Kwara State Polytechnic, at the cost of N182, 369, 625.00, was awarded to Namylas Nig. Ltd, even when it was found that the company was not qualified to execute the contract.

”ICPC’s investigation into the petition revealed strong evidence of collusion, bid rigging and corrupt practices against Namylas Nig Ltd in the bid process.

“The company used falsified, forged and doctored PENCOM Compliance Certificate, Tax Clearance Certificate and ITF Certificate of Compliance to submit its bid during the bidding process.

”Sulaiman on his part, was accused of bribing a government official when he paid N5 million through a Guarantee Trust Bank account to Alanamu, as a reward for the award of contract to his company, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 9(1) (a) and punishable under Section 9(1) (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

”Their offences are also in violation of Sections 8 (1) (a), 10(a) (i), 18 (b), 19 and 22(1) (a) (i) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and punishable under the aforementioned sections.

”The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them.

“The trial judge, Justice Abdul Gafar then granted them bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum each; and that one of the sureties for each of them must have a landed property in Ilorin.

”The matter was then adjourned to 12th October, 2017 for pre-trial hearing in line with Section 3 of the Kwara State High Court Practice Direction, 2013, after which a new date for trial would be set.”

Following petitions, the presidency had on August 6 dropped Alanamu and Maimuna Aliyu as board members of ICPC.

A tweet by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande said: “We are stepping down two of the new ICPC board nominees who have ongoing investigation issues with the commission as this presents a conflict.

“While existence of allegations or petitions against someone shouldn’t necessarily disqualify them from considerations for appointments, this case presents a peculiarity as we have confirmed that the agency in which they are to serve is indeed investigating the two of them.

“A basic check showed no court convictions against them; but when weighty petitions come up, this administration will always do the right thing.”
