  • Absence of principal suspect stalls Offa robbery trial

Absence of principal suspect to the Offa robbery on Wednesday stalled the commencement of trial of other suspects at the Ilorin High, Kwara state.

Daredevil armed robbers on the 15th of April this year attacked some banks in the ancient city of  Offa, killing scores of people in the process.

Prosecution represented by Kwara state Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) told the court that he got information from the police high command that the principal suspect in the case, Michael Adikwu is dead.

Five of the accused persons in court on Wednesday include Ayoade Adebosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Niyi Ogundiran, Saliu Azeez and Adeola Abraham.

The suspects, who said they were served evidence of charge sheet on Monday this week.

They added that as a result they could not meet with their lawyers for representation in court.

The sheet contains exhibits, suspects’ statements and government’s witnesses.

Advancing reasons why the trial would not continue, Mr. Ajibade said “there are two complaints. One, the suspects do not have legal representation; two, we were informed by the police headquarters in Abuja that the first accused person, Michael Adikwu is dead.

“Taking a look at case’s dairy, we discovered there is statement from the first accused person. I directed the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to contact the force headquarters and he spoke with one Abba Kiyari and he told us that the first accused person is dead.

“In this circumstance, we are constrained to amend the charge to remove his name from the charge sheet. We are therefore, applying for a short adjournment. We will write the police requesting for evidence of Michael Adikwu’s death.”

In her short ruling Justice Halima Salman urged the Legal Aide Council to come to the assistance of the accused persons for legal representation.

Justice Salman added that there was no evidence of the first suspect’s death before her court.

She said that the court is poised to give the case accelerated hearing in the interest of justice.

Justice Salman adjourned the case to November 30th, 2018 for hearing.

  • Drama as suspected placenta thieves trade blame

There was mild drama on Thursday as suspected ritualists blamed each other over the theft and sale of baby placenta in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The state police command paraded one Suleiman Fatima, hospital attendant and Salaudeen Ibrahim (Islamic cleric) for allegedly conspiring to buy/sell baby placenta.

Mrs. Suleiman, who was working in a private hospital reportedly was said to have sold the placenta to the Muslim cleric sometime last week.

Parading the suspects, the state Police Commissioner Kofowora Bolaji said that “upon successful surgery the doctor of the private hospital handed over the new born baby to one Suleiman Fatima of Agaka area, Ilorin to give to the biological father of the baby, but instead the suspect delivered the placenta to one Alfa Salaudeen Ibrahim to use for charm with a view to getting monetary reward from Salaudeen Ibrahim.”

Mr. Bolaji added that investigations are still ongoing, saying after the conclusion of investigations “the suspects would be charged to court.”

Fielding question from reporters, Mr. Ibrahim said: “I read Islamic Studies from the Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin. I graduated in 2016.

“A month ago, she came to me to ask if baby placenta can be used for ritual purposes and I answered in the affirmative.  And that was the last thing I discussed with her. And she left. Because she is an attendant in a hospital she told me that some people would leave their baby placentas for them to throw away.

“Later, I had even forgotten and she came with one about five days ago. She dropped the placenta, after her departure something told me to call her to come and take the something away, and that I would not do the ritual. I called her to come and pick it away she refused to, not until she called me that the incident had been reported at the police station.  Not to be implicated I packed the placenta and threw into a nearby river. I thought with that I would get myself out of trouble but here am I.”

The hospital attendant denied collecting any money from the cleric, adding that she is a close friend of the wife.

Said she: “He did not hand over any amount of money to me, but he told me to help him get baby placenta since the wife is my friend. It is because of my closeness to the wife that is why I acceded to his request. This is the first time I would engage in such nefarious activity.

“I have three kids and my children placentas were handed over to my husband. I never gave him my children’s placentas. When I called him the story had taken a twist he said he had thrown into the river.

He added that the placenta would not be efficacious as the baby was delivered via caesarian section (CS).”

  • Unite to end misrule in 2019, Kwara APC urges members

Group seeks solution to primaries’ fallout

Preparatory to 2019 general elections, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state has charged its members to put their act together in order to end misrule in the state.

The party added that bad governance has bred impunity over the years in the state.

APC also hailed governorship candidate, Alhaji Abdulraham Abdulrasaq and other candidates of the party on their emergence.

“They must continue to bear in mind that, they have been pushed forward to help in ending mal-administration, incompetency and high handedness in the corridors of power,” the party said.

Also, a group of intellectuals under the auspices of Kwara People’s Network (KPN) has urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC to bridge the loop-holes created in the just concluded primaries of the party in the state.

State Chair of APC Hon Bashir Bolarinwa “we can assure our members, supporters and good people of the state that every aggrieved person or member will be reached in the coming days, so as to present a united front that will dislodge the pretenders in government.

“We will continue to rely on the support, counsels and prayers of our members, supporters and the good people of Kwara state as we walk into  2019 to elect true representatives for our people.”

Hon Bolarinwa said: “However, we are grateful to party members for displaying high level of commitment, dedication and readiness to make our political liberation struggle in Kwara State, a done deal.

“We shall continue to accord our party leaders, members of the executive council at all levels and the teeming supporters their pride of place in the scheme of things.

“We have a duty to appreciate our aspirants for all offices whose efforts put more life into the party. You moved round the state, propagating the ideals of our party. You committed your hard earned resources to the process. We don’t have enough words to appreciate you.

“We are grateful to the father of the party, President Muhammadu Buhari for finding time out to meet with our governorship aspirants and stakeholders in the party from the state. KPN added that a correction of the deficiency created by the primaries would ensure inclusive governance and give every Kwaran a sense of belonging. It added that that would give APC a landslide victory in the 2019 elections in the state.

In a statement, National Coordinator and Secretary of the forum Busayo David and Abdulazeez Lukman said that APC “has the qualities and manifestos that can lead our dear state to the Promised Land, which made us to support the APC in kwara and Nigeria so that we can enjoy the dividends of democracy.”

The statement reads: “The sharing formula used in distributing the elective positions majorly at Kwara Central and Kwara South senatorial districts, is a bit deficient. In kwara central that comprises of four LGAs; Asa, Ilorin east, Ilorin south and Ilorin west, which are divided into two federal constituencies; Asa/Ilorin west and Ilorin East/Ilorin south. Asa and Ilorin east have been given House of Representatives, Ilorin west has both governor and senate while Ilorin south has none. Based on the fact stated, it will be fair enough to consider Ilorin south for senate.

“Similarly, Kwara South comprises of seven LGAs; Ekiti, Oke-ero, Offa, Oyun, Irepodun, Isin and Ifelodun. Kwara south has two federal constituencies which are Offa/Oyun/Ifelodun and Ekiti/Isin/Irepodun/Oke-ero. Offa has the Senate seat, though Oyun has none but Ifelodun should be considered with the House of Representatives.

“We hereby humbly call on NWC of APC to treat this matter with utmost urgency. Irepodun local government area has been represented at the House of Representatives for16 years. The only Christian that won House of Representatives from Ekiti local government area should not be denied.”

  • Tunde Idiagbon was a rare example of loyalty – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said that his deputy as a military head of state, the late Major General Tunde Idiagbon, was a very rare example of what loyalty to fatherland and to a superior should be.

He made the remark while receiving APC governorship aspirants and members of the party from the three senatorial zones of Kwara State at State House, Abuja.

“Tunde was strong, loyal and extremely committed to the cause of positively changing the narrative about Nigeria, which the administration set out to do at that time,” the President said.

He recalled how his former deputy, who, while on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia when the administration was overthrown in 1985, insisted on returning to the country despite the political uncertainty especially as he had learnt that he, as Commander-in-Chief at that time, had not been killed in the take-over.

The President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, added that the late Idiagbon rejected the offer from the King of Saudi Arabia to bring members of his (Idiagbon) family from Nigeria to the Kingdom, as he was his guest at that time, and eventually returned to Nigeria to suffer arrest like he (Buhari) did.

Buhari further enjoined Nigerians to remain faithful and loyal to the country in all their dealings.

“You don’t have to be in uniform to be loyal.  What I said long ago in 1984 is still valid today. We have no other country but Nigeria. Others who feel they have another country may choose to go. We will stay here and salvage it together,” he said.

The President thanked the APC stakeholders for the position they have taken to continue to support the party regardless of the outcome of the primaries.

He assured them that, with the unity displayed so far, APC will form the government in Kwara State after the 2019 elections.

  • Reps: All peaceful on first day of resumption

Why Dogara’s removal may not be easy – Lawmakers

All was peaceful on the first day of resumption in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The lawmakers were returning from a long recess that spanned over two months.

Contrary to expectations, there was absolute peace and quietude as Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara came into the chamber at 11:38am.

There was no murmuring, grumbling or any act of discontent. This may be due to the honour accorded, late Hon. Funke Adedoyin who died on September 28th.

Proceedings of the House was adjourned till Wednesday in honour of the lawmaker who represented Irepodun/Oke-ero/Isin/Ekiti federal constituency of Kwara state in the House.

However, lawmakers Tuesday expressed doubt on the ability of the touted impeachment plan against Dogara to succeed.

According to Mohammed Tahir Mungonu (APC- Borno) the plot cannot see the light of day as it would be difficult as the APC caucus may not be able to garner 240 members as stipulated by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Presently, APC is estimated to have 190 members while PDP has 157, APGA 5 members, ADC 4 members, SDP 1 and Accord Party has 1. However, 2 vacant seats exit due to the death of two members.

Monguno said: “The parliamentary conventions and norms is that the majority party produces the leadership of the party except Nigeria will be an exception.

“My only advice is for the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to honorably resign their positions
since they are now members of the minority party.”

This, he said is in consonance with best democratic norms and values that is obtainable all over the world.

“Based on moral situation but with regards to the constitution, we need two-third to remove them and if the APC can muster that two third majority, I wish APC members good luck,” he said.
The lawmaker added that for the opposition to occupy positions of principal officers of both chambers will directly affect not only the legislative business but also the policy direction of the APC  government.

“It is going to definitely disrupt legislative business because they are not members of the ruling party so the manifesto as well as the programme of the party they belong to is directly in conflict with the programme and objective of the ruling and majority party of the National Assembly therefore there is going to be conflict of interest in the way and manner they are going to pursue the agenda of the ruling party.”

Such a situation he said might lead to sabotage.

He however said: “If we are sure that we are going to muster the two-third majority, we are going to count ourselves, definitely we are going to move ahead and then remove the speaker that is if we can muster the two-third majority in consonance with the provision of the constitution that requires two-third majority to remove the speaker. Why not, we will move. But if we cannot get the two-third majority, there is no need to embark on an exercise in futility.”

Another member, Sergius Ogun (PDP-Edo) was confident the APC cannot come up with the necessary figure to impeach Dogara.
He said: “If APC members in the House follow the constitution, they don’t have the figure and that presently, no party has the figure to produce any speaker.

“We were elected by Nigerians to come and represent them. If we want to follow the business of representing our people that will
be the last thing on the mind of anybody right now.

“So he remains the speaker till the expiration of the 8th National Assembly.”

According to the lawmaker, many members  in both parties were denied return tickets so it would be difficult for PDP to align with APC to impeach Dogara.

Monetary inducement to impeach Dogara would also not work, he said.
But a member who spoke under condition of anonymity warned that there may be dire consequences if the APC goes ahead with the impeachment plan.

According to him, some of the APC lawmakers who are principal officers may lose their seats over the plot.

“A list of such lawmakers is being compiled to be forwarded to the Ethics and Privileges Committee if need be,” he said.

Also listed on this week’s Notice Paper, for the House are: a bill for an Act to amend the National Tobacco Control Act, 2015, to address the lacuna that may be easily exploited by tobacco industry in Nigeria and to cure certain defects in the Act, ensure its effective implementation in Nigeria.

An Act to establish the national security trust fund which seeks to provide for the maintenance of a Trust Fund that will cater for the procurement of military security infrastructure and technology for security agencies in Nigeria.

A bill for an ‘Act to provide for the management, administration, operation, regulation and supervision of payment, clearing and settlement systems in Nigeria’

Others are: A bill for an Act to repeal the Advertising Practitioner’s (Registrations, etc) Act and enact the Advertising Practitioner’s

  • ‘I believe in Buhari’s change agenda’

Dispels rumours of being a mole

The governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kwara State, Hon. Mashood Mustapha on Monday declared his total support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s change agenda.

The ex-special to Senate President Bukola Saraki on parliamentary affairs dispelled the rumour making the round that he an agent of Saraki in APC.

The governorship aspirant said this in Ilorin, the state capital when he formally declared his intention to contest the 2019 governorship election in the state.

He added that if elected, he would consolidate on the efforts of the Federal Government in sustaining and adding value to the development Nigeria is currently enjoying.

“I reiterate my unwavering loyalty to President Buhari, the good people of Kwara state, the national and state leadership of the APC. I however, want to implore the leadership of our party to give room for internal democracy within our party. Every aspirant should be given a level playing ground so as to achieve a rancor free primary election.

“Whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer should bear in mind that there is no victor or vanquished; we have a common goal and we must unite to make our goal a reality,” he said.

Said he: “I want to use this opportunity to address the rumour of me being a mole in APC. When I first heard that allegation I waved it off thinking it will fade out when my party members see my efforts and commitment to the party. Ironically, some elements within and outside our party have seen that as an opportunity to dent my image owing to the fact that I have an unblemished record asides my past relationship with the Senate President.

“It is on record that virtually all politicians in the state have had one form of relationship or the other with the Saraki’s until political differences tear them apart. Mine is not an exception. I worked

Senator Saraki right from when he became the governor of the state up till when he became the Senate President, but I had to quit after all efforts to allow for internal democracy failed and I could no longer cope with the way he imposes his decision on others. I have a mind of my own and I cannot be a puppet to anyone.

“For those who say I am a mole to Senator Saraki in APC, I want you to search your hearts deeply and ask yourselves if a mole bears the kind of persecution I suffered in hands of the Sarakites. I also want you to sincerely ask yourselves if a mole can openly criticize the policies of the incumbent government of the state and also take a position when some opportunists attempted to exhume our defunct nPDP platform to derail the president and his administration through the formation of illegal and irresponsible Reformed APC.”
