Kwara okays N10,000 as upward review of monthly pay for pensioners

Kwara State Government says it has approved the upward review of monthly pension by N10,000 across board for pensioners.

“The implementation of this agreement for pension review in Kwara State Public Service shall be effective from 1st May, 2025,” Finance Commissioner Dr Hauwa Nuru has said.

She added that the review was contingent on an agreement the government signed with the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) at the instance of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) last Friday.

In a statement, Dr Nuru said at least 73.2 per cent of state pensioners had not registered with the Kwara State Resident Registration Agency (KWSRRA) in spite of government’s nearly one year advocacy for them to enrol.

“We have been on this campaign for nearly one year. Kwara State started almost a year ago. The government has given enough windows for all workers and pensioners to enrol.

“Now, we are left with no option but to pay only those whose details we can verify, in line with our commitment to further clean the payroll and free up resources,” she said.

The commissioner said the government had discovered some disturbing evidence of payroll fraud perpetrated by a cartel, adding that this had been reported to the police for further investigation and prosecution of the suspects.

“This cartel is deploying every trick to frustrate the KWSRRA process and the verification of authentic workers and pensioners. We are getting them,” she said.

Monarch to governor: fulfil your campaign promises

The Ohoro of Shao, in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Job Obalowu Atolagbe, has urged Governor Abdulraman AbdulRazaq to fulfill his campaign promises to the state.

Oba Atolagbe also urged the governor to provide infrastructural facilities for Shao.

The monarch said this in Shao at a thanksgiving service in honour of the late All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and elder Chief Wole Oke.

Oba Atolagbe urged the governor to honour the late Second Republic Kwara State House of Assembly leader by bringing development to his community.

He said: “Chief Wole Oke was a man of foresight. He has been challenging one political hegemony.

“He was the only force of hope that time.

Oke moved the motion for the establishment of the current Specialist Hospital in Ilorin. Government Day Secondary School, Shao was his handiwork.

“He demonstrated his politicial sagacity and genuine horse trading for Shao to get electricity. The late politician stood solidly behind the current government.

“He was humility personified. I want an establishment of Chief Wole Oke Foundation to sustain his legacies.

My question is who is going to fill the gap.

“The labour of this great hero must not be in vain. “I urge all our politicians to eschew all forms of unhealthy rivalry. Our votes in the community should always be in one place.”

Saalu added that “the governor is emotionally touched by the death of the politician who was known to all as a father to the governor.

“For half of a century our late father had a very cordial relationship with the AbdulRazaq’s dynasty. Our late father was a role model in Christendom, a detrabilised Nigerian and a distinguished community leader. One whose footprints in human capital and community development were legendary.

“The governor and the entire government and people of the state will miss the late politician. He left at a time when he was mostly needed. It is the governor’s that God will stand by the immediate and extended family he left behind.”

“Kwara State is one of the most peaceful states, but this fact does not mean that we should relent. It only requires that more efforts are made so that the peace continues and improves in the future,” he said in Ilorin at an interactive session with top government officials on Tuesday.

“It is on this basis that we are here to hear what the government has been doing to achieve the peace the state enjoys.

“After hearing that we will go back and analyse whatever we got and see what we are going to come up with for Kwara State to sustain and possibly improve in the peaceful security it is enjoying.”

  • Kwara and the challenge of past failures in healthcare

Kwara and the challenge of past failures in healthcare

    • By Babajide Fadoju

Sir: For far too long, the healthcare sector in Kwara State suffered from the neglect and mismanagement of past administrations. Up until the most recent tenure, the state’s medical training system was left to rot.

Facilities deteriorated, accreditation was lost, and young people who aspired to become healthcare professionals were left stranded. It was a damning legacy of abandonment that forced many Kwarans to seek training opportunities elsewhere, draining the state of potential and talent.

That dark era has since ended. Under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Kwara State has reclaimed its place as a serious player in the healthcare sector.

The recent approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to allow Sobi Specialist Hospital, Ilorin, and General Hospital, Offa, to train nursing interns is nothing short of a landmark achievement. For the first time, Kwara will be able to groom its own nurses rather than watching them leave for other states in search of training opportunities.

This is not just about infrastructure; this is about restoring dignity to a profession that had been disregarded by previous administrations.

Let’s be clear: the decay did not happen overnight. The previous political leaders had nearly two decades to build a robust healthcare training system, but they failed spectacularly. Instead of investing in critical manpower development, they focused on politics of patronage, leaving the healthcare sector in shambles. Nursing schools struggled for accreditation, hospitals lacked the personnel to provide quality care, and patients bore the brunt of a failed system.

The absence of proper training institutions meant that Kwara had to rely heavily on importing medical personnel from other states.

The result? A fragile, unsustainable system that left communities vulnerable. It was an avoidable crisis, but past leaders simply didn’t care enough to fix it.

Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration has rewritten the script. Unlike his predecessors, he recognizes that investing in healthcare is not just about building hospitals—it’s about ensuring those hospitals are staffed with well-trained professionals. His administration’s efforts in securing accreditation for the training of both pharmacy and nursing interns speak volumes.

For the first time, Kwara’s young, aspiring nurses have a home-grown path to professional excellence.

This means better healthcare services, reduced brain drain, and greater employment opportunities within the state.

And it doesn’t stop at nursing. Governor AbdulRazaq has prioritized the overall revitalization of the health sector, from equipping hospitals to improving staff welfare. The government has been intentional about fixing dilapidated health centres, upgrading medical equipment, and recruiting more healthcare workers.

The implications of this achievement cannot be overstated. With an expanded capacity to train nurses and other medical professionals, Kwara is positioning itself as a healthcare hub in Nigeria. In the coming years, we can expect improved healthcare delivery; more trained nurses mean better patient care across the state. Young people who previously had to leave for other states can now build their careers at home. A well-functioning healthcare sector attracts investment and boosts the local economy. With better-trained personnel, health outcomes will improve, saving lives and reducing preventable deaths.

The accreditation of Kwara’s hospitals for nursing internships is not just another policy move; it is a bold step toward securing the state’s future.

Kwara’s healthcare sector is on the rise, and for the first time in decades, we can say with confidence that the future looks promising. The failures of the past are being corrected, and Kwara is finally getting the healthcare system it deserves.

An Islamic cleric, Abdulraman Bello, yesterday told the Kwara State Magistrates’ Court how he murdered and disemebered a female student of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, Yetunde Hasfoh Lawal.

The deceased and cleric were said to be Facebook friends.

Abdulraman said this during his arraignment with four others. He therefore pleaded for the release of those who were arraigned with him, claiming they did not commit any offence as alleged by police. Earlier, the state Ministry of Justice announced its intention to take over the case.

Counsel from the ministry, Issa Zakare, informed the court that the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) was out, adding that the defendant (Bello) had a case to answer following his subsequent proper arraignment at a state High Court.

The counsel to the family of the deceased, Dr. Folorunso Ahmad Hussein, did not oppose the ministry’s application but pleaded for justice for the murdered girl and family.

Speaking with reporters after the sitting, Hussein said the state ministry had sent a principal counsel to take over the case from the police prosecutor, adding that the application was granted.

“The counsel informed the court that DPP’s advice had been released and proper charges preferred at the High Court and filed while parties were served on Thursday morning with the charges at the High Court,’’ he added.
