  • No agreement to zone governorship ticket to Kwara North in 2027, says Ashiru

No agreement to zone governorship ticket to Kwara North in 2027, says Ashiru

The Senator representing Kwara North District, Lola Ashiru, has refuted claims of an agreement to zone the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Kwara North or any specific part of the state in the 2027 general election.

He emphasized that the three zones traditionally engage in competitive processes, asserting that victory goes to whoever strategizes effectively and does his homework well.

Ashiru, an architect, spoke in his Offa country home when he hosted reporters as part of his constituency outreach initiatives.

He said: “In the history of Kwara state, the governorship ticket has never been zoned to any particular senatorial district. There has never been a time when at general elections, candidates from all parts of the state have not contested in an election.

“All the time that Kwara Central, Kwara South, and even Kwara North have contested and won gubernatorial elections in the state, there was never a time anyone sat in a corner and zoned the ticket. Rather it has always been fought for and won based on merit, reach-out, and consensus.”

The Senate Deputy Chief Whip said although he sympathised with the Kwara North Senatorial District for being disadvantaged, power is not served a la carte.

Ashiru said the ticket would not be decided out of sentiments or at the whims of a single individual.

Ashiru said Ilorin-Omuaran-Kabba Road rehabilitation would receive deserving attention from the Federal Government soon.

The Senator said he’ll do everything within his possible best to relate with his colleagues at the 10th Senate emphasizing the economic importance of the road projects to the Nation at large.

Ashiru said bad road infrastructure is a log in the wheel of the socio-economic development of the country.

Strike threat: ‘We’re doing reviews to accommodate labour’s demands’

    • Kwara govt to dialogue with labour leaders

Kwara State Government says it is  doing some reviews to  accommodate organised labour’s demands.

The aim, it said, is to stave off any strike being contemplated by organised labour.

Organised labour had on Tuesday served the state government 14-day ultimatum strike notice over non-implementation of N35,000 minimum wage palliatives as a result of fuel subsidy removal and other sundry agreements.

In a statement, Commissioner for Communications, Mrs Bola Olukoju, said the state government preferred to dialogue with the unions.

“The administration favours dialogue, mutual respect, collective bargaining and commitment to sustainable economic growth over any other thing.

“Already, the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mahe, has been asked to initiate a new round of dialogue with the unions,” Olukoju said.

She added:  “From the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff to the Governor and Office of the Head of Service, among others, the door of the government is always open to leadership of the labour unions for constructive engagement.

Kwara State Government wishes to restate its commitment to promote the welfare of workers and the people of the state.

“This administration, despite being among the third lowest recipients of federal allocations, has fewer rivals in the country in terms of prompt payment of salary and general welfare of workers.  “In the wake of and since the removal of subsidy by the Federal Government, the administration has committed additional N1,392,135,000.00 every month to payment of palliatives to the workers alone.”

“As things stand today at the state level, an average of 74.06 per cent of federal allocation to the state goes into payment of salaries and allowances of workers alone.

“This does not include the cost of providing government services or any public emergency. At the local government level, between 80 per cent and 95 per cent of their monthly allocations go into paying workers’ salary alone.

“This leaves just a pittance for the rest of the population and developmental projects. It is worse at the local government level.

“This often forces the government to resort to different financial strategies, including loans, to maintain or expand existing infrastructure and develop new ones to ensure socio-economic growth and human capital development.

“Regardless, the administration understands the critical roles  workers play in the implementation of projects, policies and programmes of government, and will continue to pay attention to the welfare of workers in a sustainable way.

“We therefore urge the labour unions to embrace dialogue and continue to reciprocate the goodwill of the government over the years in the overall interest of the taxpayers and the public.”

  • Kwara cabinet okays teaching hospital for KWASU, huge infrastructural projects

Kwara cabinet okays teaching hospital for KWASU, huge infrastructural projects

Kwara State Executive Council has approved the setting up of a teaching hospital to support the training of medical students and related professionals by the Kwara State University, a major step that involves huge facility upgrades at the General Hospital Ilorin (GHI) which has been adopted for the purpose as well as legislations to guide its operations.

Commissioner for Health Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam told a press conference on Wednesday that the council observed that recent facility upgrades under the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration had earlier qualified GHI as a postgraduate training health institution and went ahead to approve additional N906.7m seed fund to push through the historic transition.

“The proposed seed fund will meet cost of infrastructural facelift and construction of new ones, equipment upgrades, administrative changes, and address manpower needs to support training of medical students, which is complementary to the ongoing postgraduate training,” El-Imam told reporters, adding that “this will be of immense benefits to the people of Kwara State and the nation at large.”

She said the council approved for the government to present a bill on ‘establishment of the Kwara State Teaching Hospital and related matters’ to the House of Assembly.

At a council meeting on Wednesday, the government also approved the award of redesigning and wholesale rebuilding of the iconic Kwara Hotel to Craneburg Construction Company Limited to a five-star hospitality facility at the sums of N17b.8bn for a duration of 24 months, according to Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology Hon. Damilola Yusuf.

To be done through contract financing model to ensure prompt delivery, the construction and furnishing will be the most comprehensive since the legacy was constructed by the Brigadier-General David Bamigboye regime in 1975, clearly giving it an edge over any other facility in the entire North Central.

“The contract award followed a long procurement process that began in September 2023,” Yusuf told reporters.

That comes as the Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport also announced immediate reconstruction works on the Wahab Folawiyo (Unity Road) Road in Ilorin, the state capital, following the state executive council’s approval of the overhauling of the major artery road that empties into downtown Ilorin.

Coordinating Commissioner for Works and Transport AbdulQuawiy Olododo told reporters that phased works on the road, such as asphalt milling, will begin from next week with minimal drags on vehicular traffic at every stage of the work.

The contractor will complete work on one lane before working on the other to reduce traffic gridlock, Olododo added.

He said dozens of traffic management officers will be deployed while government — to lessen the impacts — will also divert traffic through Obbo Road, Coca Cola Road, and Police Road. Some bad spots on the three are to undergo immediate fix, Olododo added.

He said further information on traffic management will be communicated to the public as preparation gets underway, assuring the people of adequate care while the work lasts.

“We are not demolishing any private properties and business premises not sited on government’s setbacks will not be eaten into in any way,” according to Olododo.

The road, which history began in 1976, is a great legacy of late Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo and George Agbazika Innih.

The cabinet observed that the artery road has outlived its lifespan as it has started failing after decades of heavy use.

The council approval of the work fell under the urban renewal and developmental road projects of the administration, conceived to lessen travel time, boost economic growth, give a new look to the capital city, and improve the living conditions of the people.

Following extensive briefings, including procurement details, the council approved the total reconstruction of the busy Wahab Folawiyo four-lane dual carriageway (Unity Road) in Ilorin — a major step that aligns with the concerns of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq that many of the roads in the capital city have long outlived their engineering lifespan, Olododo said.

The contract was awarded to the A-list Craneburg Construction firm at the cost of N1,513,528,195.18.

In what is a preparation for the future of one of the major traffic-prone axis of the metropolis with a concentration of banks and other businesses, the cabinet has also approved the award of construction of a modern flyover to collect the traffic at Unity roundabout to Craneburg Construction at the cost of N8.4bn for the duration of 12 months.

The approval comes with a clear instruction to the contractors to have careful plans to execute the project in manners that lessen the typical hitches of any urban renewal projects, Olododo quoted the Governor as telling the council.

“Because of the peculiarity of that axis of the metropolis, the Governor directed that contractors are to devise means to as much as possible avoid outright closure of the road. They are to pay extra attention to this. This is to ensure convenience for the people amid this huge development,” the commissioner said.

The cabinet, Olododo stated, observed that the costs of the urban renewal projects in Kwara are characteristically modest, compared to similar infrastructural projects in other parts of the country.

The council also approved the revocation and re-award or review of some ongoing road contracts, including Ilesha Gwanara and Owode-Ofaro-Alabe road, for poor performance or delay in their delivery, while it called for speedy completion of others, including the Orisa bridge in Oro Ago in Ifelodun local government area of the state.

The Governor has also directed that the approaching sections of the road to the Orisa bridge be fixed as soon as possible, while the Iyana Shonga Road in Edu local government are to be evaluated for rehabilitation works, according to the commissioner.

The government has secured multibillion naira road projects that connect different parts of the state, especially Kwara North and South, the Commissioner added.

“His Excellency informed the cabinet that work is to begin shortly on some major roads in Kwara North and Kwara South as contractors have been mobilised to site with at least N40bn. This is what His Excellency has attracted as our major gain from some recent policy initiatives of the Federal Government,” according to the commissioner.

He listed the major roads as Kosubosu-Kaiama-Bode Sa’adu (130km); Lafiagi-Shonga-Bacita (83km); Okuta-Gwanara-Bukoro (32km); and Offa-Ojoku-Afin-Eiyenkorin (49km) which will burst out at Odo-Otin local government in Osun State.

The commissioner also said that some of the roads and river crossings captured under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project will soon begin, including Afon -Sapati Oko-Igbotele; Mondala-Yowere-Agbonna; Kpandarako-Ginda-Kusomunu-Kachitako-Tsakpata Lealea-Gulufu-Bacita; Lafiagi-Effagi-Pututa; Ajase Ipo-Igbonla-Agbamu-Osun boundary; Ojoku-Illa market; Ijagbo-Aperun-Adeleke-Igbawere; Igbaja-Ofarese-Wale-Agbeku; Gerewu-Eiyenkorin-Okolowo-Express-Peeke-Dongari-Ogundele; Kaiama-Kemanji; and Oro-Sanmora, among others.

Olododo, meanwhile, also gave updates to the council on some ongoing construction works, saying the General Tunde Idiagbon Flyover is going on steady and will be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

The government has also continued massive rehabilitation works on at least 70 roads within and outside the capital city in the first phase. The roads include Sawmill Garage; Olorunshogo; Adabata; Emir’s Road; Taiwo-Surulere; Sefura Junction; Airport Sawmil-Taiwo; Ita Merin-Offa Grammar School road; Offa General Hospital; and Irra Road, among several others.

  • Kwara targets two percent of global garment market, begins Ops Q1 2024

Kwara targets two percent of global garment market, begins Ops Q1 2024

Kwara State is positioned to capture at least two percent of the global garment market when it begins full operations with daily production of 10,000 garments from its newly set up factory that is the biggest in West Africa subregion, a top official has said.

The garment factory is one of the many initiatives of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to drive socioeconomic growth in the state.

“There is a huge gap for ready-to-wear garments. Most Nigerians depend on imported goods.  It is disheartening that we have a lot of creative talents in Nigeria, but they do not have the opportunity to mass produce. This is one of the gaps we intend to fill,” managing director of the state’s garment factory Olubukola Kifayat Adedeji told reporters on a tour of the facility in Ilorin, the state capital.

“Here, we redefine garment production in Nigeria and West African as a whole. We will be involved in designing and manufacturing of ready-to-wear garments for local, international brands and corporate organisations. The global garment factory is largely dominated by the Asian countries, particularly China that has 31.3% of total market. But Africa has 6.7% of the market share and Nigeria has 2.7%. With this garment factory, we will command at least 2% of the market.”

Adedeji said the factory has some of the most sophisticated machines used in ready-to-wear garment production, including the Oshima automatic fabric cutting machine, which she said is the first of its kind to be commissioned in West Africa at the moment.

She said production of garments will begin from the first quarter of 2024 as the factory is currently hiring its first set of workers, adding that she is impressed by the quality of talents who have shown up since the exercise began.

“We are at the recruitment stage. We have all our equipment in place. All the machines have been tested. We  have recruited supervisors. We are going to the next phase of recruitment, which will be recruiting the production workers. At this stage, we intend to employ 300 workers at the moment and at full capacity, we intend to employ 4,000 workers,” Adedeji said.

“This is a much bigger one, compared to anyone that existed before. For the people of Kwara State, the coming of this factory means more revenue will be internally generated. It will open up the economy of the state along different value chains. When we start, there will be a boost in all sectors of the state economy from transportation to and fro within the town, catering services, supply of raw materials, and the likes. It is a boost to the state economy. And when we start exportation, it will be a source of foreign exchange revenue for the state.

“Backward integration is part of the future plan. Our technical partners will be with us for some months, and they are providing raw materials. But eventually, we intend to back integrate and source for our raw materials locally. Part of what we are looking at is setting up a farm to produce our cotton so that prices of our products will be more competitive in the global market at any time. Once we have stable competitive prices, we are sure that we will be available for all markets.

“We have set up a department for high quality control. There is a place to stack finished products. The products will not be allowed to leave this factory if they have not met the standard we put in place. So, at any point in time, quality control officers will be trained and rotated continuously so that our high standards are maintained.”

She said the setting up of the factory followed a clear feasibility study, which shows different gaps and the way to tap into the market and ensure sustainability.

“We are aware there is a gap and we are looking to filling the gap,” Adedeji said, adding: “We are looking at 10,000 garments daily because we’ve got a cutting machine which is one of its kinds in West Africa, at the moment. It can cut 10,000 outfits in an eight-hour shift. So, on a daily basis, we intend to produce 10,000 garments.

“Here, we have over 1500 machines and of course we will have to employ up to 4000 workers. It is a source of empowerment and employment for the people. We are particularly sensitive to unskilled women and youths. We have a lot of talented youths, and it is an opportunity to them. It will not just be a garment factory; it will be a hub for creativity. We will encourage the youths to come and unleash their talents. It will be a place where creativity meets implementation. We will help them develop their talents.

“There is also going to be training opportunities for people who will not be working at the factory. We have training facilities for people who will just be trained for one or two months and use the talent elsewhere. Already, we have volunteers among fashion designers who are willing to come and train youths free of charge. We don’t need to pay them. But we will provide the facilities for them to do this that will be mainly for export.

“Our future sustainability plan is to go into public-private partnership. We believe that once the private sector is involved, their money is involved, and they are profit-driven, they will do anything to make sure it is sustained. That is what we are looking up for in the future to ensure that it doesn’t slide into redundancy.

“We are aware that Ilorin is synonymous with Aso-Oke and some of the designers we have spoken to intend to use Aso-Oke materials for their our production and ready to use garment for exports. We are definitely going to tap into the Aso-Oke market and industry. Aso-Oke will be one of our main brands because it is our heritage.

“One of the main objectives of Kwara State Garment factory is to redefine the Nigerian garment manufacturing environment and achieve global recognition. KWSGF will manufacture all types of clothing according to specifications provided by customers placing bulk orders. KWSGF will deliver its services based on two contract types: mass production and small-scale production. KWSGF will be involved in the designing and manufacturing of ready-to-wear garments for local markets, brands, corporate organisations, and international markets.”

He noted: “With this success, the institution has been placed in the lead of rethinking her environmental culture and developing new paradigms for solving problems and ensuring global environmental sustainability.

“We consider it a major achievement, not just for our Green Initiative, but for our determination to add value to the economy of the state and her populace.

“This initiative ensures higher efficiency in powering automobiles, helps our environment to be less polluted, and has attracted partnerships with the Kwara State Government and private institutions”.

He called on the state government and individuals who have scrap vehicles to bring them for conversion at moderate charges.

He also said that the institution had commissioned a plastic recycling plant of the Centre for Entrepreneurship, adding that with the initiative, “tons of plastic waste that would have polluted our environment are currently being converted to pavement stones.”

Kwara Gov directs distribution of 20,000 50kg bags of maize as palliatives

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the distribution of another 20,000 50kg bags of maize at more than 50% subsidised rates to residents of the State.

The distribution commenced on Sunday by the state palliative committee that oversaw the sharing of the first 25,000 bags a few months ago.

The gesture received huge commendations from the public as it eased the difficulties faced by different categories of farmers and ordinary citizens who use maize for animal feeds or food.

The committee is giving out a 50kg bag of the maize at N10,000 per bag, exactly 38.46% of the current market value of N26,000, significantly reducing the cost of the prized item and bringing ease to the general public.

The maize palliative was one of the many layers of support the government has provided to the people in the wake of the fuel subsidy removal and the attendant shocks to the economy and cost of living.
