Continental applause as Kwara Gov bags Lifetime Achievement award on gender inclusion

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Wednesday won a lifetime achievement award for his transformational gender inclusion policy in the state as prominent women leaders from across Africa commended his remarkable feats.

The Governor called on development agencies to design a ‘programme for result’ initiative which rewards any community or subnational that intentionally votes certain percentage of women into legislative offices, saying this would drive up gender inclusion and promote sustainable development.

At the ongoing 7th Voice of Women (VOW) Conference and Awards in Abuja, the Governor received a plaque specifically honoring his historic inclusion of unprecedentedly high number of women in key leadership positions, including having the highest number of women in cabinet in the history of Nigeria.

The award was a “big surprise” to the Governor by the Women Radio 91.7fm whose chief executive officer Toun Okewale Sonaiya called AbdulRazaq a historic figure in Nigeria as far as gender inclusion is concerned.

“This award recognises an individual, female or male, who has contributed in a profound way to gender empowerment during their lifetime or posthumous,” according to the organisers.

The event, enriched by fireside conversations around issues of women empowerment and victimization, was attended by First Ladies from different states, female federal and state parliamentarians, ministers from across the continent, and dozens of gender rights activists, among others.

Kwara First Lady/Chairperson of Governors Wives’ Forum Ambassador (Mrs) Olufolake AbdulRazaq led her colleagues to the event; while Minister of Youth Dr Jamila Bio also briefly took the floor to point out how the Governor has mainstreamed gender inclusion in political leadership.

Two Kwara commissioners — Women Affairs’ Hon. Abosede Olaitan Buraimoh and Education and Human Capital Development’s Hajia Sa’adatu Kawu-Modibbo — are attending the conference, which is supported by MacArthur Foundation.

Erelu Bisi Fayemi, former First Lady of Ekiti State and author of the African feminist charter, said the Governor of Kwara has truly earned his stripes for giving women a voice in a way never seen before in Nigeria’s history.

She also commended her husband former Governor Kayode Fayemi for his efforts in gender inclusion, and urged Governors in Nigeria to emulate the Kwara helmsman.

“If you check all the recent indices, the truth is that Nigeria is not doing so well in gender equality or women empowerment. It remains difficult for women to access political leadership,” she said, singling out AbdulRazaq for “using his platform as a Governor to promote women inclusion. He has shown adequate political will that is worth emulating.”

Maureen Hinda-Mbuende, Namibian Deputy Finance Minister, said at the event that she is humbled by how much “the Governor of Kwara State has deployed the goodwill of his office to support women empowerment”.

In 2019, the Governor appointed a cabinet that had 56.25% female — apart from keeping some 50 % slots for women permanent secretaries. He currently has a 50% female cabinet, including young commissioners.

He has also introduced a legislation that mandates Kwara to have at least 35% gender parity in appointive political offices, including in the state bureaucracy.

The Governor received a standing ovation from the large crowd, especially when the plaque was officially presented to him.

AbdulRazaq, for his part, thanked the organisers and wives of the Governor for their great efforts to put the issue of women empowerment on the front burners.

“This august gathering reminds us of the noble role that the Women Radio, organizers of this event, has played over the years in spotlighting every issue that concerns women, the girl child, and general wellbeing of our community,” he added.

“I am personally proud to associate with the management and staff of Women Radio. I congratulate you for this wonderful initiative. Women Radio has been a major cheerleader for what our administration has done in gender mainstreaming in Kwara State. This support dated back to 2019 when we nominated a 56.25% female majority cabinet in Kwara State.

“But we have gone beyond just appointing women as a matter of choice. We have enacted a legislation that compels any government in our state to have at least 35% gender representation in all government appointments, including at the level of permanent Secretary or boards of parastatals.

“This policy has had appreciable effects in the larger political space in our state. Today, we now have the youngest female lawmaker in Nigeria. This is apart from the other female legislators in the House. It is our intention that this will tear down all barriers against the girl child and spur them to reach for the stars!

“To make this possible, we have keyed into different educational and sanitation programmes that will encourage the girl child to enrol in school and complete her education. One of them is the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), which we have keyed into.

“We have similarly introduced a policy of six-month maternity leave to encourage women to nurture our children without losing their professional status or abandoning work.

“I’m optimistic that many other states of the federation are in the race to break new positive grounds in gender mainstreaming. Together, we can influence national legislations that support gender parity and empower women and the girl child to fulfil their destiny.

“Once, again, I congratulate Women Radio on its successes over the years. I specially thank you for the honour done to me and to our state so far. I promise that we will not drop the ball.”

  • Kwara Gov exemplary in Nigeria’s fight against malaria, says FG, Global Fund

Kwara Gov exemplary in Nigeria’s fight against malaria, says FG, Global Fund

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Wednesday came up for national applause by the Global Fund as the body rated the administration as one of the best in the fight against malaria.

The commendation came as Governor AbdulRazaq personally launched the statewide distribution of integrated Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention and insecticide Treated Nets (SMC/ITN) across communities in the state.

“Today’s event again testifies to the commitment of our administration to the wellbeing of our people, especially in the fight against malaria. Our malaria elimination programmes and strategies are complementary to the multipronged approach we are using to address health care challenges in the state,” the Governor said in Ilorin at the flag off ceremony of the integrated SMC/ITN campaign for 2023.

Dwelling on the huge success recorded by the administration during the implementation of 2020 ITN campaigns, AbdulRazaq promised to continue to pay prompt attention to the health needs of the masses.

The Governor said the mosquito net is an effective tool to tackle the menace of malaria through the barrier it provides against mosquito bites, especially in the night when used as prescribed, urging Kwara residents to collect and put them to good use.

“The remarkable success of our last outing in November, 2020 was not limited to the 99% state-wide coverage and its attendant socioeconomic impacts. It also contributed to the overall improved health indices that we are celebrating and have been rewarded for in the state,” he said.

“It has been established that these interventions have helped to bring the prevalence of malaria to as low as 20%. This is far from the 27% that was recorded in 2018 before we came on board and even below the current national average of 22%.

“The success in the implementation of the SMC strategy since 2021 where we have been administering malaria preventive tablets to our under 5-year-old children has also crashed the incidence of severe malaria among this age group to as low as 6%.”

He congratulated every member of the team and partners on the huge feats made, and pledged to continue to create an enabling environment to encourage and support partnership and collaborations to achieve a lot more.

The Governor earlier on Wednesday received on a courtesy visit a delegation comprising representative of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and Team Lead for Global Fund Programme Management Unit for National Malaria Elimination Programme, Federal Ministry of Health Dr. Issa Kawu; Nigeria Country Manager for Global Fund Dr. Jean-Thomas Nouboussi; Managing Director Society for Family Health Dr. Omokhudi Idogho; and State Coordinator for World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Salihu Abdullahi; among other dignitaries.

They were received at the Government House alongside Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi; Secretary to the State Government Prince Abdulkadir Mahe Aliyu; and State Commissioner for Health Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam; Commissioner for Communications Hon. Bola Olukoju; Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology (BIT) Yusuf Damilola; Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs Abubakar Bata; and Commissioner for Energy Abdulganiy Abdulazeez Kola; among others.

Dr. Issa Kawu, who represented the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, said malaria, according to the 2022 World Malaria report, remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with the country contributing 27 % to the global malaria burden and 23% to malaria deaths globally.

He commended the Governor for his proactiveness that has resulted in the huge success recorded in the state’s response to malaria prevalence.

Dr. Kawu said malaria prevalence has dropped drastically in Kwara State under the watch of the Governor owing to his commitments to the antimalaria campaign in the state.

Dr. El-Imam, for her part, said some 2.2m nets worth $11.6m and SPAQ (malaria preventive drugs) worth $36.1m are to be distributed in this round for the benefit of the people.

She attributed the feat the government has recorded to the government’s passion and responsiveness to the welfare needs of the citizens, hoping to achieve greater results for the current SMC/ITN campaign.

The Commissioner said the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) activities are already ongoing in 11 LGAs of the state that were selected based on rainfall pattern information for 4 consecutive months.

Dr. Jean-thomas, country manager for Global Fund, hailed the Governor’s leadership style and dynamism that he noted led to the state’s landmark achievements in the health sector.

He said AbdulRazaq’s passionate drive of the health sector accounted for the choice of Kwara as the first state to receive the new and effective LLIN and SMC/ITN nets.

“Before the end of the year, our Executive Director will organise a mission to visit Kwara. He wants to visit Kwara because of all the successes that we have been telling. It is not only the Global Fund secretariat, but the whole world is telling good stories about Kwara, on the story of Kwara regarding the successes and elimination of Malaria in Kwara,” he said.

“This (first-of-its-kind event) is to compensate your effort in mobilising your colleagues and health workforce in putting some resources in this campaign. Kwara is one of the best states playing its part by putting its counterpart resources as and when due. It has been quite exemplary.”

Highlights of the event were the symbolic presentation of insecticide Treated Nets to some families in the state and the Governor demonstrating the use of the net by briefly sleeping in it.”

Justifying this good gestures, Alhaji Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode, a native of Offa, who is founder the MOK Foundation, said it is his own modest way of giving back to the society.

Founded in 2023, MOK has carried out series of impactful projects aimed at enhancing the overall well-being of the Offa community.

Undergraduate lifts physically challenged Kwara pupil

University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) 400-level Faculty of Law student Hauwa Usman has splashed a cash award on a deaf and dump primary three pupil of the Kwara state School for Special Needs, Sofiat Othman.

Sofiat Othman is said to the best pupil in her class.

Hauwa, who recently contested for the presidency of her law faculty, also marked her birthday with some of the pupils of the school.

Rather than throw a big and lousy celebration, she opted for a low-key celebration with the pupils by sharing cakes, drinks and taking snapshots with them.

Hauwa said:: “I am by this act, encouraging the kids to know that education is very important. That they should not leave here for anything.

“Many of them have potential but because they do not have anybody to believe in them they become dropouts while others become beggars on the streets.

“I am showing love for the pupils because I have seen instances where people with disability had been written off.

“Therefore, I am using this avenue to encourage them, show love for them, as they are part of the society. It is necessary for us to include them in whatever we do.

“I see so much greatness in these kids. In everything we do we should remember them. We should carry them along, include them and encourage them to be better persons that can make addition to the society.

Kwara hotel owners lament over multiple taxes

The Association of Hotel Owners in Kwara state has accused the state Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) of multiple taxes, intimidation, harassment, and locking up of facilities.

The association therefore threatened to “approach court of competent jurisdiction for redress if locking up of the hotels of our members without due process continues.”

It appealed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to “save the hotel business in the state from total collapse as a result of harassment, coercion, intimidation, extortion and unlawful locking up of hotels.”

A statement signed by the President and Secretary of the association Alhaji Dauda Akande and Babatunde Oladunmoye said: “Complete lack of synergy between KWIRS and the MDAs that are responsible for fixing and negotiating taxes and levies has resulted in crazy bills being served our members as demand notices.

“Currently our members pay over twenty taxes and levies to federal, state, and local governments.

“Over-regulation and multiplicity of taxes is currently a huge disincentive to investments in Kwara state hospitality and tourism industry.”

The hoteliers urged the state to “set aside erroneously generated bills and demand notices being served our members by KWIRS; commercial properties paying commercial land charges to Kwara State Geographic information service (GIS) annually should be exempted from payment of business premises levy because this amounts to double taxation on the commercial property; agencies established for social services like KWEPA and Fire Services should be well funded by the Kwara State Government and should not be converted to revenue generating agencies with yearly revenue targets.

”Payment of 50 percent of hotel tourism registration fees as annual renewal fees should stop forthwith; fixing of taxes and levies should involve those who will pay, those who will collect (KWIRS), and the MDAs to prevent unnecessary friction and rancor and KWIRS should stop locking up of hotels without a court order since they cannot be the judge in their own case.”

To stave off any confrontation with the hoteliers, top brasses of the KWIRS convened a meeting with executives of the association on ease of doing business and ways to improve revenue generation in the state.

Speaking during the meeting, KWIRS Executive Director of KWIRS, Mrs. Shade Omoniyi, represented by the Director of Administration and Operations, Olatunji Balogun, and Director of Legal and Compliance, Shehu Mogaji, said that the parley aimed to address ways in which both parties could enjoy more productive relationships through the creation of an atmosphere that would enable ease of doing business and also improve the IGR of the state.
