  • 23 Kwara Assembly members defect to PDP

Twenty three members of the Kwara state House of Assembly on Wenesday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defectors were led by Speaker of the House, Dr. Ali Ahmad.

Former chairman of Offa local government area of the state on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Prince Saheed Popoola did not quit APC.

Dr Ali announced the defectors decision at the floor of the house

The defection of the lawmakers came less than 24 hours after Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and Governor AbdulFattah Ahmed had announced their respective defection from the ruling party. Ali said the decision was permitted by Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution and that it was reached after wide consultations with their constituents who have become disillusioned within the APC.

In the 10-paragraph statement, Ali said the defection brought to him a sigh of relief, having been ‘terribly sad’ about the decision to dump the PDP in 2014. “Today I am the happiest leaving the APC for good; I wish I was never a member of the party”, Ali said.

He noted that since the APC came into power in 2015, keen watchers of political events in the country had concluded that it was not a party that could lead Nigeria out of the woods. “Unarguably, the intrigues and power play that birthed the long drawn legal battle with key members of the party over phantom allegations coupled with the arbitrary use of government institutions such as the police and anti-corruption agencies for harassment and intimidation of perceived opponents in power since APC assumed power has dealt a heavy blow to governance”, he said.

The Speaker said such act of illegality has turned Nigeria into an object of ridicule among the comity of nations, adding that “with the current unprecedented spate of disobedience to court rulings, the present administration at the national level has redefined government as government of the cabal by the cabal and for the cabal thereby throwing the rule of law, the bedrock of democracy, to the dogs”.

He noted that while his group in the APC had been treading the path of honour and spreading the olive branch and offering the necessary guidance since the crisis within the party started, and in spite of their display of humility ‘some players have refused to be placated and are therefore heel bent on continuing to fan the ember of discord and disunity in the party’ which was built by joint efforts of labour and resources.

He concluded: “Today, as I and other members of the Kwara state House of Assembly dump the APC for good, I heaved a sigh of relief. In 2014, I was terribly sad leaving the PDP reluctantly with 36 other members of the House of Representatives. Today, I am the happiest leaving the APC fort good. I wish I was never a member of the party.

  • Kwara governor defects to PDP

Kwara state Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on Tuesday dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His announcement followed that of the Senate President Bukola Saraki who also declared his decision to quit APC in a tweet.
Governor Ahmed in a statement by his senior assistant on media and communication Dr Muyideen Akorede said “following due consultations with the people and in response to calls by major stakeholder groups in the state, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed today defected to the People’s Democratic Party(PDP), having realized that the All Progressive Congress (APC) can no longer serve as a platform for achieving the aspirations and expectations of his people. “

The National Working Committee of the APC on Monday  dissolved the executive committee of the party in Kwara State.

The NWC  asked a caretaker committee led by Hon. Bashir Bolarinwa to run the party pending the election of new leaders.

Caretaker committees will be appointed at the ward and local government levels.

The dissolved state executive committee, which is loyal to Senate President Bukola Saraki, is led by Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, who has been openly castigating the party along with other leaders in the state.

It was learnt that the decision was taken because of alleged disloyalty by the Balogun-Fulani led APC executive.

It was also gathered that the step became necessary to prevent Saraki from “hijacking” the party’s candidates who will be elected at the primaries of APC.

  • APC dissolves Kwara executives at levels

The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress rose from a meeting of its National Working Committee on Monday to announced the desolation of the State Working Committee and all elected party officials at all levels of the party in the state.
The party also announced the appointment of a caretaker Committee for the state.
The resolution of the party NWC signed by the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, said the caretaker committee will be headed by Hon.Bashir Bolarinwa while caretaker committees will be constituted in the wards and Local Government Areas.
The resolution, said that “the NWC at its meeting of 30th, July, 2018, examined the unfolding developments within the party in Kwara state, specifically the irregularities that characterized the conduct and outcome of the congresses that produced the leadership of the party at all levels (ward, Local Government and state).
“The Committee also reviewed that actions of some of the leaders of the party that emerged from the above congress who participated in an open rally calling on the senate President to decamp to the PDP.
“The NWC after a careful and exhaustive deliberation on this and other developments in the state chapter of the party, and pursuant to the provisions of article 13.4 (xvi) and (xvii) of the party’s constitution, invoked its powers as enshrined therein and hereby resolve to dissolve all party organs from ward, Local Government and state executive of the party in Kwara.

  • Defection: PDP battles crises in Kano, Kwara, Benue, five other states

•Panel summons Shekarau, Kwankwaso, ex-ministers •Ortom may get re-election ticket, PDP wades in Gemade-Suswam tussle for Senatorial ticket •Party hands over structure to Saraki, as Senate President woos PDP leaders in Kwara •Kogi: Melaye may get ticket, Yusuf likely back in the House of Reps •Dankwambo to determine ex-Minister’s fate, Nafada’s governorship ambition

The recent gale of defections by top ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sparked crises in at least nine state chapters of the opposition party.

Kano, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Gombe and Sokoto are top on the list of the affected states, The Nation can now report.

The rest are Imo, Adamawa and Bauchi.

Party sources said yesterday that beneath the euphoria that greeted the defection of one governor, 11 senators and 35 Reps, for now, is immense resentment toward the defectors by current members of the PDP.

Disturbed by the brewing tension, the PDP leadership has mandated the party’s Committee on Contact and Mobilization to wade in and hold talks with stakeholders.

The committee is headed by ex-Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke.

It is scheduled to meet with stakeholders from the affected states tomorrow in Abuja.

It is understood that the terms of engagement might be negotiated between old PDP members and defectors from the APC.

The last stage of talks is said to account for the delay in the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State.

Saraki has spent the last 72 hours to reach out to PDP leaders in the state who are opposed to his return to the party, especially the plan to hand over the party structure to his group.

Many of such PDP leaders are said to have now backed down on their threat not to accept him back into their fold.

Investigation revealed that the main challenges facing the PDP borders on party structure in the affected states and power sharing formula ahead of next year’s polls.

A highly placed source confirmed tomorrow’s meeting, saying: “the PDP leadership has mandated Imoke Committee to resolve the grey areas between defectors and old party members in order to put the party in good stead ahead of primaries.

“The committee has invited stakeholders in some strategic states like Kwara, Kano, Sokoto, Benue and others for a meeting on Monday.

“At the session the committee might broker agreement between the key defectors and old members of the party.

“The major fear is how to create a sense of belonging for all. The party does not want the defections to lead to more complicated problems.

“The terms offered some defectors had not helped matters. For instance, the PDP agreed to concede the right of first refusal to any incumbent governor defecting from APC to seek re-election.”

The case of Benue State, according to a party source, is particularly complex.

“We have a serious case at hand in Benue State where ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam has been sustaining PDP over the last three years,” the source said.

“But the way the  PDP national secretariat is managing the defection of Governor Samuel Ortom and Senator Barnabas Gemade might lead to Suswam losing out.

“While the PDP leadership has decided to cede the governorship ticket to Ortom despite protests, Suswam loyalists were shocked that the party is contemplating giving the Benue Northeast Senatorial ticket to Gemade who defeated the ex-governor for the same seat in 2015.

“We do not know how the party will appease Suswam, who is a key member of the Imoke Committee. The alternative for Suswam is to either defect to APC or engage in sabotage in 2019 if he is politically stripped naked.

“Having been a long-time associate of the Saraki dynasty, there is suspicion that the Senate President may have negotiated for Gemade.”

A similar situation is playing out in Gombe State  where Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo is said to be deeply interested in picking his successor.

His decision is unlikely to go in favour of a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Bayero Nafada who is interested in the governorship seat.

“All that Nafada has wanted since 2015 is the governorship ticket,” a source said.

But the governor is said not to be sure of Nafada’s loyalty post 2019 and is therefore not comfortable supporting his aspiration.

The source added:”the worst case scenario for Nafada is to return to the Senate which might put paid to his dream of governing the state.

“Also, a former Minister of Transport, Idris Umar, who left PDP for APC in 2016 has been holding talks to return to PDP. But stakeholders, especially the governor, who are suspecting that he is returning to the party for the governorship ticket have vowed to resist his defection.”

Atiku, Nyako want different candidates for Adamawa governorship race

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako are not on the same page on who should fly   PDP’s governorship flag in the state.

While Nyako  is tipping his senator son, Abdulaziz, Atiku is believed to prefer either Governor Jibrilla Bindow or “any other core loyalist in the mould of ex-Governor Boni Haruna who stood by him between 2003 and 2007 when he had conflict with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.”

On Kogi State, the source said: “it is apparent that our party might go back to our winning formula of producing the governorship candidate from Kogi East and deputy governor from Kogi West. Short-changing Kogi Central (the Ebira) might create an image crisis for PDP.

“While some of our leaders have opted for an automatic ticket for Senator Dino Melaye in Kogi West others said it might be a violation of the power rotation formula in the district.

“If Melaye gets the ticket, the Ijumu-Gbede axis will be occupying the seat for 16 years in a row.

“The last time Lokoja-Kotonkarfe-Oworo axis occupied the seat was between 1999 and 2007 when Sen. Tunde Ogbeha was their representative.

“Melaye became Senator with the huge votes from Lokoja-Kotonkarfe-Oworo axis.

“The emergence of a member of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Yusuf as a senatorial aspirant has added more problem for the Imoke Committee because the Representative is more acceptable to the people of Kogi West than Melaye. The alternative is to allow Yusuf to go for a third term in the House.”

PDP concedes Kwara structure to Saraki

A member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP said the party leadership has agreed to hand over the party structure, senatorial ticket and senate presidency to Saraki.

He will also decide those to fly PDP’s flag for the governorship and House of Representatives elections.

The source said: “the old leaders of the party are however tasking the PDP secretariat on what is on the table for them.

“It is unknown what will be the fate of stalwarts like former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, ex-Minister of Transport, Ibrahim Bio, Senator Simeon Ajibola (the party’s governorship candidate in 2015); the state chairman of PDP, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo; a former Vice Chancellor of UNILORIN, Prof. Abdulraheem Oba; Yinka Aluko and others.

“A safe option being explored by the party is for Saraki to reach out to these PDP stalwarts and open up negotiation with them. In the last 72 hours, the Senate President has opened talks on how to co-exist with old PDP members.

“The under-the-table discussion may  have informed the delay by Saraki and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed in announcing their defection.”

No meeting point yet for Kwankwaso, Shekarau, Wali, Gorozo

Kano State also looks like a hard nut to crack with no meeting point yet in sight for Senator Rabiu Kwankwanso who is returning to the PDP, and ex-Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, ex-Minister Aminu Wali and Senator Hayatu Gorozo.

“Kwankwaso is demanding 60 per cent of the party’s structure which means his group will produce the governor and other key positions. He also said he will finance the party during the 2019 poll,” a source said.

“Therefore, he is leaving the 40 per cent to the three other leaders (Shekarau, Wali, and Gorozo) to share. The three leaders have said a guest cannot dictate to the landlord.”

A source in Shekarau’s camp said: “To compound the challenge in Kano, Kwankwaso is yet to sit down with PDP leaders to discuss on mutual options.”

Dogara gets concession to return as Speaker, wants to install next gov of Bauchi

House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, according to sources, has been given the concession by the PDP to seek re-election in Bauchi State and return as Speaker.

“But Dogara is not stopping at this concession, he appears interested in installing the next governor of the state with strong backing for a former majority leader of the House of Representatives, Abdul Ningi as against a former Minister of the FCT, Sen. Bala Mohammed, who has been sustaining the party,” one of our sources said.

Mohammed, the source added felt “his probe by the House of Representatives, despite entreaties to Dogara, was a ploy to destroy his political career.

“Also, the party might favour Senators Misau and Nasif with automatic return tickets although  the PDP will be taking a great risk in view of recent revolts against their performance by their constituents.”

On Sokoto State, sources said Governor Aminu Tambuwal will be doing battle with a former Deputy Governor, Mukhtar Shagari who has declared his interest in the 2019 governorship race.

The source said: “Shagari and his loyalists cannot go far. This is more so due to the alliance between Tambuwal and ex-Governor Attahiru Bafarawa against ex-Governor Aliyu Wammako. The headache of PDP is how to rehabilitate Shagari, who has been a consistent PDP member in Sokoto.

“Concerning Imo State, PDP might adopt a 50-50 power sharing formula between its old members and anticipated  defectors from APC  like the embattled Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere, Senator  Ifeanyi Ararume, a former National Organizing Secretary of APC, Sen. Osita Izunaso and other heavyweights.

“But the original PDP members prefer a 70-30 power sharing ratio. And if Ararume defects to PDP, he would have foreclosed his governorship ambition. As it is now, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha is the aspirant to beat and he has a firm grip on the party structure in the state.”

  • N1b health insurance for Kwara expectant mothers

The Kwara State government will pay an average of N1.35 billion annually for the health care insurance premiums of poor expectant mothers, children, the aged and other special segments of the population in the newly launched state Health Insurance Scheme (KWHIS).

This will accrue from the state government’s contribution of one per cent of the annual consolidated revenue fund to pay for the poorest of the society through equity fund, Governor Ahmed has said.

He said that 40 per cent of the funds would come through the ‘saving one million lives performance for results initiative’— an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Health, supported by the World Bank and targeted towards the improvement of maternal and child health in Nigeria.”

Governor Ahmed said this during the launch of the KWHIS in Ilorin, the state capital He added that an initial N200m had been set aside as the state’s capitalisation of (Kwara Health Insurance Law (KHIF) to ensure the scheme is well funded.

With this development health insurance is now compulsory for all residents of the state.

He called on residents to register and take advantage of the statewide scheme to access affordable health care delivery in the state.

The governor maintained that the launching had taken the state closer to achieving the dream of universal health coverage by making the scheme accessible and compulsory to all citizens and residents.

The governor added that “the Kwara Health Insurance Law also provides for the establishment of the Kwara Health Insurance Fund, KHIF, which will pool resources from various sources including premium contribution from residents, the state government subsidy for the very poor, multi-lateral grants, donations, support from the Federal Government and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)”.

“I have no doubt that this scheme is primed for success not only because it is guaranteed to be sustainable, well-funded and well managed, but also because it will leverage digital technology to promote efficiency, and transparency”, Ahmed said.

Said he: “Between 2007and 2016 the state government in collaboration with the Government of Netherlands (through the Dutch Health Insurance Fund and PharmAccess Foundation) and Hygeia Health Management Organisation implemented CHIS which leveraged health insurance for healthcare delivery to the rural poor.

Under the Kwara CHIS, we provided the policy framework for the scheme as well as part funding of the premium subsidy to the tune of N1.1billion.

“The Dutch Government also funded the larger portion of the subsidies while the Hygeia HMO provided the administrative framework for the participation of both public and private healthcare providers.

By the end of 2016, Kwara CHIS had achieved the significant successes including the enrolment of 139,714 persons from low income rural areas in 11 local government areas.

“Based on the urgent need to improve access to universal healthcare, it became necessary to expand CHIS which was considered narrow in scope due to its selective focus. The old scheme, therefore, had to be replaced with a wider-spread, comprehensive, better-funded and managed scheme.

“Consequently, I signed Kwara State Health Insurance Agency Bill into law in November 2017. The law sets up the Kwara Health Insurance Scheme, which makes contributory health insurance mandatory for all residents of Kwara State.

“This law replaces the Community Health Insurance scheme and ensures universal health coverage to all citizens and residents of the state for a low annual premium.

Following today’s launch of the Kwara State Health Insurance Scheme, all citizens and residents of Kwara State are expected to enroll on the program as required by the law establishing it.

No more will citizens and residents of the state be unable to access critical treatment because they cannot afford to pay hospital fees or buy prescribed drugs.

“Thanks to its low, affordable premium and associated quality healthcare, the Kwara State Health Insurance Scheme takes us closer to our dream of universal healthcare for our people.

“Specifically, the benefit packages of the health insurance scheme will reflect preventive and curative components of health care delivery and will have minimum standards of care and service from participating health care facilities in the public and private sector.

“In addition, the law also provides for the establishment of the Kwara Health Insurance Fund (KHIF). KHIF will pool resources from various sources including premium contribution from residents, the State

Government subsidy for the very poor, multi-lateral grants, donations, support from the Federal Government and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“Furthermore, we are boosting the scheme with forty per cent of funds received through the “Saving One Million Lives Performance for Results Initiative”—an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Health, supported by the World Bank and targeted towards the improvement of maternal and child health in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Deputy Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands to Nigeria, Mr. Michel Deelen promised that the Dutch government would strengthen its partnership with the Kwara State government to achieve universal health coverage in the state.

Also speaking, the Lead Health Sector Specialist and Head of the World Bank Group’s Health in Africa Initiative, Prof. Khama Rogo announced that over four million dollars had been earmarked for Kwara State to strengthen the healthcare service delivery to the people.

Prof. Rogo who noted that many African leaders wanted to carry out health insurance scheme without success, describing the scheme as a restoration of dignity to the people of the state.

In his address, the Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme, Professor Yusuf Usman promised to partner the state to guarantee the success of the scheme.

The Executive Secretary, KWHIS, Dr Bunmi Jetawo-Winter had explained that the scheme was a well throughout and carefully planned scheme to ensure affordable and accessible health care service delivery across the state with each enrolee paying only N25 premium per day.

She said, “I must say that the transition to providing universal health coverage to Kwarans has not been a easy feat. Citical steps had to be taken to ensure that the scheme’s governance and administrative structures were stablished and sustainable.

“This means, that the health insurance law and mandate will become a sustaining feature in the lives of Kwarans from now on, and a major shift away from the status quo of fee-for-service type intervention, and unaffordable health care burdens placed on our people.”

  • Kwara to partner private sector on education

•Govt spends N6.5b on water reticulation

The Kwara State government will partner the private sector and corporate organisations to improve education.

Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development Bilikisu Oniyangi spoke at a news conference to herald the maiden Inter-Secondary School Mathematics and English Competition organised by the Saliu Mustapha Foundation.

She said the government is committed to improving the standard of education through adequate funding.

The competition, themed “Investment in Education, the solution to all Problems” was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.

Hajia Oniyangi said the ministry had designed policies and programmes aimed at rejuvenating education and accord it the place of pride.

The commissioner, who said all hands must be on deck to address needs in education, urged stakeholders to support the government in its quest to reposition the sector.

She said: “The government is committed to improving the standard of education through adequate funding and provision of necessary infrastructural facilities. The Ministry of Education has set out policies and programmes towards this direction.

“In advanced countries, education is seen as a collective social responsibility, where private individuals and corporate organisations contribute to the development of education through endowment, building of facilities, scholarship or through this kind of inter-schools competition.

“This initiative is laudable and worthy of emulation by individuals and corporate organisations, because to have a vibrant education sector, all hands must be on deck. The government is ready for a partnership that will advance education.”

Representative of Saliu Mustapha Foundation Yakub Isowo said the competition would begin on July 21 with preliminaries among 20 secondary schools in Kwara South; 20 in Kwara North and another 20 in Kwara Central.

“Ten schools would then be selected from each zone to participate in the grand finale. The first, second and third best schools would be awarded with their mathematics teachers at the grand finale on August 4 at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, Ilorin.”

The government spent over N6.5 billion on water reticulation between 2009 and 2018 to end the perennial water scarcity in Ilorin and environs.

Commissioner for Water Resources Abdulkadir Yusuf, who addressed reporters at the weekend, said N1.9 billion was also captured in the 2018 budget to be spent on tertiary water reticulation in some parts of the state.

The commissioner urged residents to be prepared to pay a token to get regular potable water in their homes.

He noted that the government of former Governor Bukola Saraki spent about N3.7 billion on water while the current government had spent over N2.4 billion on the scheme. About N858 million was spent through the government’s infrastructural funding programme.

A consultant on the water project, Prof Sulaiman Adeyemi, said the water challenge had lingered for so long because of the need to provide adequate water production, renewal of water distribution network, increase storage capacity, restoration of old pipes, and provision of adequate water treatment plant.

He said the project would be inaugurated in September.

  • Offa Poly suspends two students for alleged cultism

Management of Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Offa local government of Kwara state said it has suspended two students of the institution suspected to be cult members.

The names of the students include Tajudeen Selim and Temitope Omotosho.

The state police command had early in the week paraded some students of the polytechnic for alleged involvement in cult activities.

Management added that before the students were paraded by the police, it reported the incidence of forceful initiation to security agencies based on the complaint lodged by the student who was forcefully initiated.

In a statement, polytechnic spokesperson Olayinka Aroye said the police’s quick response and intervention was responsible for the arrest.

Mr. Aroye said: “The two suspected students were suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of the police investigation and further findings on the matter.

Adewusi Vincent who was mentioned along with the two had ceased to be a student of the institution having been withdrawn from the Polytechnic since 2017 for poor performance.

“The management wishes to state unequivocally that cases of cultism have been a thing of past in the institution as the new management under Dr. Lateef Ademola Olatunji had purged the institution of all forms of cultism, gangsterism and other anti social vices since he came on board as Rector in 2017.

“Other offences such as examination malpractices, sexual harassment are also gross misconduct at the Polytechnic which attract outright expulsion from the institution. Students found culpable are equally handed over to the law enforcement agents for prosecution.

“The management, through its directorate of students’ affairs has put a lot of measures in place to checkmate cultism with the introduction of the use of security form for newly admitted students; regular sensitization of students where they are admonished to steer clear of cultism, hooliganism and other forms of social menace.

“And that they should be of good conduct everywhere they are in order to ensuring peaceful co-existence within and outside the polytechnic campuses and maintaining harmonious relationship with other colleagues and the host communities.

Since then, the students union executives and other students have been well behaved and have not been found wanting both in character and
    learning.

It is on record that the Polytechnic enjoys a serene atmosphere, peace and tranquility than ever before.

“It was likely because of the institution’s zero tolerance for cultism and stern sanctions on offenders who contravene and breach the rule that led the suspects to have taken themselves outside Offa to perpetrate the acts.”

  • Defection: We await Saraki’s directive, says Kwara APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC)  in Kwara state has said it is awaiting Senate President Bukola Saraki’s directive on whether  to defect from the ruling party.

The party also prayed to God to lead Senator Saraki aright on his next line of his political action.

The state APC Chairman, Ishola Balogun-Fulani told reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital that members of the party remain committed to Saraki and would follow his decision.

Balogun-Fulani described the APC as a broken party, saying that the cord of unity amongst members has been severed due to internal wrangling and the unwarranted trial of the Senate President.

When asked to respond to a call last week by the party’s three senatorial chairmen in the state asking Saraki to lead them out of the APC,  he clarified that:”Everyone has a right to express what he wants.”

“But as for us, we wait on what our leader(Saraki) will decide ” quoting a Qur’anic verse to seek God’s guidance for the Senate President in taking any decision on the issue of defection.

Baligun- Fulani had  expressed relief, satisfaction and justification by the decision of the Supreme Court discharging and acquitting Saraki of allegations of false asset declaration, pointing out that the party has held the same position since the now ended trial began three years ago.

Said he: “As you are aware, on Friday, a five – man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Dattijo Muhammad unanimously ruled that the Senate President is innocent of assets declaration and sundry charges instituted against him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The Supreme Court further declared the evidence led by the prosecution as hearsay.

“As a party, we salute the Supreme Court for delivering that landmark judgement which represents victory for democracy. We are happy that the judgement has reinforced our expressed belief that the Senate President is innocent of all the trump up charges.

“You will recall that when the case began at the Code of Conduct Tribunal on September 22, 2015, I addressed press conference to alert the people of Kwara State and indeed, Nigerians that the case was politically-motivated. It was a clear case of political witch-hunting.

“During the 1018 days that the case lasted, we made it a duty to alert the public about the twists and turns. We once raised alarm that desperate politicians have hijacked the Code of Conduct Tribunal. We once said that the case was been remotely-controlled by politicians. At the end of the tortuous legal fireworks of 1018 days, we are satisfied that justice has been delivered on the case.

“We recall that the torturous political persecution of our leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki began because he exercised his constitutionally – guaranteed right to contest for the position of Senate President against the wishes of some political forces in the All Progressives Congress.

“All manners of extra-judicial strategies and unconstitutional measures were deployed to humiliate, vilify, embarrass and remove the Senate President from office. We thank Almighty Allah for his victory and we congratulate the Senate President for this hard-won victory.

“Like we have always maintained, no political party ever survived war waged against it self. Indeed, It is now clear that the bond of unity and cohesion in the APC has been weakened, damaged, fractured and severed.

“As a party, we extend gratitude to distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Honourable members of the Federal House of Representatives and the entire institution of the National Assembly for standing firmly with the Senate President.

“We also commend all Nigerians who are lovers of democracy and believers of rule of law for standing on the side of rule of law and democracy during the political persecution period.

“Particularly, we salute our political structure, all members of APC in Kwara State and Nigeria as a hole for keeping fate with the Senate President. May Allah continue to stand by you.

“Finally, we wish to reiterate and categorically declare our unconditional loyalty to the leadership of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON. Come rain, come sun, we will continue to stand by the Senate President.”

“We recall that the torturous political persecution of our leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki began in 2015 because he dared to contest for the position of Senate President against the desires of some political leaders in the All Progressives Congress.

“All manners of extra-judicial strategies and unconstitutional measures were deployed to humiliate and remove the Senate President from office. We thank Almighty Allah for his victory and we congratulate the Senate President for this hard-won victory.

“Importantly, we will not forget to acknowledge the fact that the judiciary demonstrated its independence and capacity to exercise uprightness and forthrightness when politicians attempted to manipulate the Court to settle political scores.

“During the course of the political persecution, Kwara APC once had reasons to declare that no political party ever survived war waged against self. Indeed, It is now clear that the bond of unity and cohesion in the APC has been weakened, damaged, fractured and severed. “
