  • Kwara urges civil servants to engage in alternative source of income

    The Kwara Government, says the civil service does not prohibit civil servants from engaging in alternative source of income, as long as it does not affect their primary assignments.

    Mrs Susan Modupe, the state Head of Service ( HoS ) made this clarification on Thursday during an interactive session with the female civil servants in the state.

    She explained that the import of the interaction with the civil servants was to instill in them the knowledge of savings and investment culture.

    According to her, this will prepare them for unforeseen future circumstances.

    Also speaking at the event, Mr Lekan Rotimi, a Resource Person, told the women that civil service law does not prohibit workers from having alternative source of income.

    Rotimi, the Director of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Kwara Inland Revenue ( KWIR ), said a survey recently carried out, revealed that only one per cent of retirees would not become dependent after service.

    He, therefore, urged them to abstain from uneconomic lifestyles of extravagant spending and engage in productive ventures.

    The director advised them to boost their active income to reduce spending and live within their means.

  • NYSC responds to corps member’s death

    The state coordinator Kwara, Mr Amaefule Remigius has condoled with immediate family of the late female youth corps member in Kwara state.

    NYSC gave her name as Amadi Eva Ichechukwu with registration number KW/18A/0135).

    The late corper hailed from Rivers state.

    The Kwara state Coordinator of NYSC Amaefule Remigius said that the entire NYSC family is saddened by the news of her sudden death.

    The late Amadi Eva is among the 2018 Batch A corps members recently deployed to Kwara state and presently undergoing orientation course at NYSC camp.

    In a statement, spokesperson of NYSC in the state urged members of the public to avoid unnecessary speculations about what led to her death.

    He said “this is not the time to hastily jump into conclusion about the root cause of her death.

    “We are still waiting for the medical findings and report from the NYSC referral hospital.”
    The state coordinator prayed that God should grant her immediate family and the NYSC, fortitude to bear the colossal loss.

  • Female corps member dies in Kwara

    National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kwara state has lost a female corps currently at its Yikpata, Edu local government area’s camp.

    The deceased, Hilda Eva Amadi was said to have died due to injuries she sustained during the “Man o War” drilling exercise at the ongoing orientation camp.

    The deceased who studied Oil and Gas at University of Port Harcourt, it was gathered was said to have been full of life before her mobilisation for the one year mandatory service to father land.

    Investigations revealed that the deceased was said to have fallen off the string in the course of Man o War drilling exercise at the orientation camp.

    A source said after falling of the string, she was hurriedly rushed to the NYSC clinic at the camp for medical attention.

    The added that medical personnel who are also corps members attended to her at the clinic.

    However, it was also gathered that when the deceased condition worsened NYSC management rushed to General Hospital in Ilorin, the state capital for further medical attention where she reportedly died.

    It was gathered that Miss Amadi’s life would have been saved if she had been immediately taken to a functional hospital.

    A source accused the NYSC management of negligence.

    State spokesperson of NYSC, Mr. Oladipo Morakinyo the death of the corper.

    He said that, the autopsy and corollary reports are being waited to know the real cause of her death.

    “It is true we lost a corper, but NYSC will soon issue an official statement to that effect,” Mr. Morakinyo added.

  • Kwara Speaker mourns Oyo State counterpart

    The Speaker of the Kwara House of Assemby, Dr. Ali Ahmad, has described the demise of his Oyo state counterpart, Mr Michael Adeyemo, as a ”rude shock and utter disbelief’’.

    Ahmad stated this in llorin on Friday in a condolence message signed by his special Assistant on Media, Shuaib AbdulKadir.

    The Oyo state Speaker died at the early hours of Friday.

    The Kwara Speaker, in his condolence message, described his late colleague’s death as “a bitter pill that is difficult to swallow for other Speakers and entire Nigerians’’.

    Ahmad said Adeyemo, while alive, was a prominent and active member of the Conference of Speakers’ Forum, who at all times brought to bear his legislative and political experiences into the scheme of things, to achieve results.

    He noted that the late speaker always earned his respect for being a colleague in the lawmaking business and more importantly, having served the forum together in various capacities.

    The speaker said, “without doubt, his death has dealt a huge blow to Oyo State, especially the State Assembly, where he presided over as the Speaker and functioned effectively.

    Ahmad stated that the deceased lawmaker believed in the tenets of democracy and legislative independence.

    He urged his other colleagues in the state Houses of Assembly to sustain his good legacies as a way of immortalising him for what he stood for.

    The speaker commiserated with Oyo State Government, members and staff of the Oyo state House of Assembly Assembly, people of his constituency, as well as his immediate family, over the loss.

    In the same vein, the Speaker commiserated with the Sokoto State Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, on the sudden death of his Special Adviser, Media and Public Affairs, Imam Imam.

    He prayed that Allah, in his infinite mercies, would sustain the deceased’s family, as well as provide them the fortitude to bear their loss.

  • FIDA Kwara flays alarming trend of incest

    The International Federation of Women Lawyers ( FIDA ) in Kwara on Friday advised parents to watch over their children, particularly female to guard them against incest, rape and indecent assault.

    Its Chairperson, Mrs Salmat Mohammed, made the appeal in Ilorin during a sensitisation walk to strategic public places in the state capital.

    This was as part of the activities marking the 2018 FIDA week.

    Mohammed expressed worry over the new trends of incest, rape and indecent assault cases in the society.

    She said that the trend had extended to some fathers allegedly impregnating their daughters, brothers engaging in sexual act with their sisters, step fathers with step daughters and uncles with nieces, among others.

    According to the FIDA chairperson, the high rate of rape and indecent assault gave the federation the clue to stage the walk to enlighten parents, particularly mothers on the social menace.

    She warned mothers not to entrust their daughters in the hands of any man, noting that the emerging trends had shown that even blood relations could not be overlooked in the act.

    Mohammed urged parents to always report cases of rape, incest and indecent assault to the relevant authorities, adding that the federation was poised to tackle all forms of violence against women and children.

    She said that the Nigerian law prescribed life imprisonment for anybody caught in such devilish act of indecent assault, rape and incest.

    Mohammed said that the walk was held across the three Senatorial districts in the state and the grand finale which would involved NGOs, civil society organisations and market women would hold later in the year.

    Speaking on the sidelines of the walk, Mrs Funke Balogun, the Chairman, FIDA Week Organising Committee, said that the federation would further intensify its campaign against all forms of sexual assaults against women.

    Balogun said that the major challenge in the campaign was failure of some parents to report cases of rape and indecent assault for fear of stigmatisation.

    She said that federation was offering free legal services for victims and lauded the state Department of Public Prosecution for always being helpful in prosecuting the cases.

    FIDA members in Kwara commenced the walk from their secretariat at Lanjorin road, Ilorin to Amilegbe, Ilorin South Local Government Secretariat, Ipata market, Opo-Malu to Post Office and terminated at the FIDA House.

    The members, who were accompanied by a band, carried banners with inscriptions like: “Sex against her Will is against the Law”, “Say No to Rape”, “Say No to Indecent Assault”, “Say No to Violence” and “Punishment is Life Imprisonment”.

     

  • Kwara health workers to begin strike May 2

    The Kwara State Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) will begin its indefinite strike on May 2.

    A statement yesterday by the Chairman, Mr Muritala Olayinka, noted that the indefinite strike will start midnight of May 2 because the 19-day ultimatum given to the government will lapse on May 1.

    They are demanding upward review of Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) from 50 per cent to 100 per cent, and promotion of workers with financial backing.

    Olayinka also cited unpaid arrears of council workers.

    He said the union would not go back on its decision until its demands were met.

    He said: “I don’t think the government will respond to our demands before that day because we have made series of moves in ensuring the government looks into our demands but it turned deaf ears.

    “If it makes a move now, it is likely going to be a meeting, but it is until when we see approval for our demands before we can make a u-turn on the industrial action.

    “Workers are not slaves so we have to make this struggle a totality until the government responds to our demands.”

    Olayinka called on his colleagues to abide by instructions from labour leaders.

    The governor’s media aide, Muideen Akorede, said the government was looking into the issue.

     

  • KSC host victorious athletes

    The Kwara Sports Council (KSC) on Tuesday hosted the athletes that did the state proud in the recent Handball and Squash competitions in Lagos.

    Speaking at the reception for the athletes in Ilorin, the Director of Sports, Tunde Kazeem, praised the athletes for their good performances, as well as being good ambassadors of the state.

    He thanked the state government for providing an enabling environment for the athletes and also urged individuals and corporate bodies to support sports.

    Kazeem also advised other associations to brace up, insisting that only vibrant athletes would represent the state at the upcoming Youth Games and the National Sports Festival in Abuja.

    He thanked the former chairmen of squash, handball, badminton, athletics and other associations for their support to their athletes.

    The Kwara director of sports disclosed that Saheed Shittu made Nigeria Handball team that beat Benin Republic in World Cup qualifier.

    He also poured encomium on Rukayat Oladunmoye, Musa Aminat and others that did the state proud in squash championship in Lagos.

  • Ahmed gets SA Fulani affairs

    Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has approved the appointment of Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Muhammad as Special Assistant, Fulani Affairs, to represent Miyetti-Allah in his administration.

    In a statement, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold explained that the appointment was driven by Governor Ahmed’s commitment to ensure harmonious relationship between herdsmen, farmers and other segments of the society.

    Alhaji Gold said that the appointment would also serve to ease communication between members of Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), the government and local farmers in the State.

    The SSG recalled that the decision to appoint a Special Assistant on Fulani Affairs was reached at the enlarged meeting of the State Security Committee held recently.

    He congratulated the new appointee and urged him to approach his new assignment with the diligence and dedication that recommended his
    appointment.

  • Kwara to encourage teaching, learning of mathematics–Deputy Governor

    The Kwara Government has reiterated its determination to encourage the teaching and learning of mathematics as a pivot for the development of the state.

    The state’s Deputy Governor, Mr Peter Kisira, gave the assurance on Thursday in Ilorin when the executive members of the state chapter of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit.

    Kisira, who stressed the importance of mathematics in development, described the subject as the engine room and basic instrument of science.

    He decried the lack of interest in the subject among students and called on parents to play effective role in partnering with relevant bodies to encourage its teaching and learning in Nigerian institutions.

    The deputy governor charged members of the association and relevant bodies to work toward producing mathematics teachers.

    Kisira also thanked the association for appointing him the “Pillar of Mathematics’’ in the state.

    Earlier, the Chairman of the association, Dr Funsho Bello, had described Kisira as a role model, saying this informed the conferment of the award on him.

    Bello explained that the association had been working with relevant organisations to initiate competitions which encourage the teaching of the subject.

    The chairman, however, stressed the need for awareness to sensitise Nigerians on  the importance of the subject.

    He also called for government assistance for its members to attend seminars and conferences in order to be abreast of the development in the profession.

  • Offa robbery: Hotelier, staff charged to court

    Proprietor and staff of the hotel where suspected Offa, Kwara state bank robbers lodged before launching their attack have been charged to court.

    The accused were arraigned before an magistrate court in Ilorin, for alleged conspiracy over the criminal act of the robbers.

    Staffers of the hotel arraigned are the accountant, a receptionist, a room keeper and a club house operator

    Also arraigned are four lodgers at the time the suspected robbers also lodged there.

    All the accused including the four lodgers are of residential addresses of the town.

    They were arraigned on a 2-count charge of criminal conspiracy and causing disappearance of evidence and giving false information to screen an offender.

    The police who arraigned them said the offences contravened sections 97 and 167 of the Penal Code Law.

    The police said on April 6, a team of operatives on investigation into the armed robbery attack extend their investigation based on intelligent gathering to the hotel located along Igosun Road in Offa with the view of securing information that could assist discreet investigation into the crime.

    They said the hotel staff could not however satisfactorily give account of questionable lodgers in their hotel prior to the robbery incident by their failure to maintain or keep proper official lodgers register expected to be presented to the police and other law enforcement agencies on demand.

    “Others found in the hotel during the investigation failed to give credible information to the police operatives to assist in the investigation concerning their observation in the hotel within the period in question,” says the Police First Information Report (FIR)

    The prosecutor, inspector David Wodi, told the court that investigation into the case was yet to be completed.

    The defence counsel, Joshua Ijaodola prayed the court to admit the accused to bail pending the outcome of the investigation as he submitted that the nation’s constitution presumed the accused innocent until the contrary is proved

    The prosecutor did not oppose the application for bail as he left the bail to the discretion of the court.

    The Magistrate, Mrs M.B. Folorunso admitted the accused to a sum of N200,000 bail each and two sureties in like sum.
    She then adjourned the case till May 3rd, this year for further mention.
