22 shops, others gone in Kwara market fire

An early morning fire yesterday gutted the popular Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The inferno consumed 22 plank shops and six containers.

The incident was said to have emanated from an improperly extinguished fire used for cooking.

Spokesperson of the state Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, who confirmed the incident, said the incident happened about 1:35 am.

“On arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered that out of a total of 323 shops in the market, comprising 22 plank shops and seven kiosks, the fire affected 22 plank shops and six container shops.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was caused by negligence, as one of the occupants of the plank shops failed to properly extinguish fire used for cooking.

“The fire later reignited, spreading rapidly to nearby shops.

“The timely intervention by the state firemen helped prevent further escalation and safeguarded hundreds of other shops and properties from destruction.”

He urged the public to ensure proper handling of fire and to take safety measures seriously, especially in marketplaces where combustible materials are in abundance.

Kwara, Nasarawa governors assure of states’ willingness to partner with private investors

The Governors of Kwara and Nasarawa states – Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Abdullahi Sule have assured that the nation’s sub-national governments are now more than ready to open up their doors and partner with private investors to explore the many investment opportunities in the nation’s 36 states.

While noting that the vast investment potentials at the sub-national level have been underexplored before now, the governors said it was time to reverse the trend.

They spoke in Abuja on Tuesday at the launch of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Investopedia, a compendium of investment opportunities in the nation’s 36 states.

Abdulrazaq, who is also the Chairman of the NGF, regretted that while Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, endowed with abundant human and natural resources, its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows over the last decade have averaged only USD 2 billion annually, which is less than 0.5% of GDP.

The Kwara governor, whose speech was read by Sule, noted that the few foreign investments recorded are mostly concentrated in oil and gas, telecommunications, real estate, and agriculture.

He said that although they are important, the FDIs have not reached the depth or breadth required to catalyse true subnational transformation.

Abdulrazaq added, “At the same time, African Direct Investment (ADI) into Nigeria has been steadily growing, with regional investors from South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, and Ghana expanding into sectors such as banking, fintech, agribusiness, and infrastructure.

“This intra-African capital is particularly important under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as it signals a growing confidence among African partners in Nigeria’s markets and opportunities.

“Yet despite these inflows, the annual infrastructure financing gap for Nigeria is estimated at USD 100 billion — a gap that states bear the heaviest responsibility to bridge. Public budgets alone cannot solve this.

“To unlock prosperity, we must mobilise both global and African capital to finance projects that create jobs, modernise infrastructure, and drive inclusive growth.

“This is the purpose of the NGF Investopedia: to serve as a one-stop shop for investors, providing credible, transparent, and curated pipelines of projects across all 36 states.

“It is not just a catalogue – it is an entry point, showing investors not only where to invest, but also how to invest in Nigeria with confidence.

“This vision would not be possible without the partnership of our sponsors and allies: Afreximbank, which will deploy innovative financial instruments to move state projects from pipeline to bankability and financial closure.

“The UNDP will support our states in building the institutional capacity needed to sustain credible investment pipelines.

“The Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), will pool post-launch resources to reinforce investor confidence and unlock blended finance opportunities.

“Together, these partnerships ensure that Investopedia is not just a publication, but a living platform that will drive investment into our states in the years ahead.

“Our vision is clear: to position Nigeria’s states as credible, competitive destinations for capital, and to unlock prosperity for millions of our people.

“When an investor builds a road, funds an agro-processing facility, finances renewable energy, or supports ICT infrastructure, the benefits extend beyond financial returns — they create jobs, improve livelihoods, and drive sustainable development.

“To our distinguished investors, both here in Nigeria, across Africa, and globally, I extend this invitation: Partner with Nigeria’s states.

“The opportunities are vast, the commitment is firm, and the time is now.

“With the NGF Investopedia, backed by strong partnerships and the NGF Fund, we are sending a clear signal: Nigeria’s subnationals are open, credible, and investment-ready.

“Together, we can bridge the infrastructure gap and unlock a new era of prosperity for our people,” Abdulrazaq said.

Before reading the NGF Chair’s speech, Sule drew participants’ attention to the many existing investment opportunities in oil and gas, mining and the agriculture sectors in the country.

He said, “In Nigeria, the prospects are enormous. The prospects are not only in oil and gas, there are prospects also in agriculture and mining. And I think this opportunity has opened up something for us, as Nigerians, to be able to start somewhere.”

Drawing from his experience while working for an oil and gas company in the United States, the Nasarawa governor said the sector in Nigeria, particularly the offshore, is still very much underexplored.

He said, “If you look at the Benue Trough that starts from Calabar, going to Gombe, through Nasarawa, Plateau, all the way to Lake Chad Basin, the opportunities there are not yet explored at all.

“The Anambra Basin is still open; it is unexplored. If you look at the Benin Basin, it is there. All of them are still underexplored.

“If Nigeria explores all these areas, we will have another Saudi Arabia. The reason is that most of these big fields in Nigeria – the Obonga, the Agbani – are all in the deep water. So, nothing is being explored in the deep ocean.

“But today, if you look at some of the discoveries that we are beginning to see – in Gombe, for instance, the NNPC has already drilled five wells approximately; in Nasarawa, they drilled one, in Lake Chad, they drilled two,” he said.

Sule advised those looking for where to invest in oil and gas in the country to look in those directions.

In the area of mining, the governor noted that every state in the country has potential for mining.

Citing examples from his state, he said, “What we did in Nasarawa State was to come up with what we called an Executive Order to say that anybody who is mining in Nasarawa must also process in Nasarawa State.

“By doing that, Nasarawa State is now home to the biggest lithium processing plant in Nigeria, and we are waiting for Mr. President to return and commission the next lithium processing plant, which will be, indeed, the biggest in Africa with 6000 tons per day.”

He also spoke about the many investment opportunities in the agriculture sector across the country.

Sule added, “There is no better time than now. The reform agenda of Mr. President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for which we are not giving him enough credit, has made more resources available in the hands of the Federal Government, the states and the Local Governments.

“And, for us in Nasarawa, we used the resources available to go into PPP. And so, we are not just looking for investors, we are looking for partners, so that we can also invest,” he said.

The Director General of the NGF, Abdulateef Shittu, explained that Investopedia will simplify investor access by consolidating credible projects into one gateway.

Shittu said it will also provide confidence through due diligence and transparent presentation of opportunities.

According to him, the initiative will equally mobilise partnerships that go beyond financing to include technical support, capacity-building, and risk mitigation.

He added, “This is why today matters: we are no longer just discussing potential, but presenting bankable pathways for global, African, and domestic capital to flow into our states.

“The prosperity that will follow — in jobs, infrastructure, and inclusive growth – will stand as a legacy for this generation of governors and leaders,” the NGF DG said.

“We, therefore, require assistance from the government in this regard too,” the traditional ruler said.

The monarch also appealed to indigenes of the town to return home, saying that the government has done everything to protect lives and properties.

He commended the Federal, state and local governments for their efforts to ensure peace and security in the community, assuring governments of the people’s support.

“I also wish to thank and commend our local vigilantes for their bravery and for coming out courageously to combat the bandits.

“Even with the limited firepower, you demonstrated the viliancy that this community has always been noted for. Posterity will always celebrate your role in the protection of our community.

“Let me equally appreciate my fellow traditional rulers and all lovers of this community for the sympathy messages. And to the entire people of Babanla, I say very big thank you for still remaining calm in the face of the attack.

“I thank you for your resilience, support and patriotism throughout this trying period. Babanla, as the home of the valiant, has in history always given refuge to people who were being persecuted.

  • Kwara viable for ICT infrastructure- Awodun

Kwara viable for ICT infrastructure- Awodun

Chief Revenue Consultant and immediate past Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS), Prof. Murtala Awodun, has restated the potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure in driving socioeconomic development and good governance in the state.

This, he noted, is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s achievements and challenges in its economy, education, and health sectors, among others.

Awodun, who spoke while featuring as a guest on Sobi FM in Ilorin, was analyyzing the 2024 state performance index (PSPI) across the Nigerian states, as published by a global economic and management firm, Phillips Consulting (pcl.).

According to the professor of business and entrepreneurship, harnessing the power of digital infrastructure, otherwise known as Information Communication Technology (ICT), can significantly improve the level of governance in Kwara and provide better services to the citizens.

He said the state performance index (PSPI) report, according to Phillips Consulting (pcl.), is intended to provide insights into the socioeconomic performance and risk profiles of Nigerian states, provided for reference purposes.

“By harnessing the power of digital infrastructure, otherwise known as ICT, Kwara state can improve its performance in terms of governance and provide better services to the citizens. Per Philips Consulting’s state performance index, in terms of ICT infrastructure, Kwara is viable in this parameter in order to drive socio-economic development, enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in governance.”

Awodun highlighted the economic reforms implemented under his watch as the pioneer chairman of the reformed Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS), which he noted has consistently ranked Kwara fifth in terms of Internally Generated Revenue per capita since 2016.

“Whereas when we talked of the Internally Generated Revenue per capita, Kwara has moved to fifth position, consistently over the past eleven years till date. For a layman, IGR per capita means that when you divide what Kwara has generated in terms of revenue by the number of citizens, the state population, and in economics, it’s called IGR per capita. I think these are viable strengths for our dear state in terms of state-level performances. It is soothing that Kwara has not dropped from the recent rankings.”

When quizzed on the objectivity of the Phillips consulting performance index report, Awodun, who is also the Chief Revenue Consultant at Treefour Consult, said the assessment was based on verifiable data from objective feedback across the strata of government, adding that Nigerian states must genuinely be guided by this report for national development.

“As the world evolves, verifiable data from objective feedback across the Nigerian states is crucial for national development. That is why the Phillips consulting state-level performance index must not be ignored. For instance, in terms of public teacher availability, Kwara has been consistently strong. These are things you can quantify in terms of the employability of teachers and lecturers in our public institutions. Also, in terms of the honesty of public servants in Kwara, Philips reports ranked number 36 out of 37. Likewise, in terms of the quality of roads, Kwara ranked 28. When you look at this parameter, it is not only in Ilorin that you will look at; there is going to be consideration of your roads against the landmass that you have.

“In terms of security of lives and properties, Kwara is ranked number 20. In terms of the quality of primary and secondary schools, Kwara is ranked number 21. In terms of the affordability of public hospitals, Kwara is ranked 26. In terms of awareness of government policies and programmes, Kwara is ranked 27. Government support for local businesses in Kwara is ranked 27. Affordability of safe public transport, Kwara is ranked 27, and the rankings go on like that.”

Awodun, meanwhile, charged the Kwara state government to essentially invest in ICT infrastructure and leverage technology to enhance transparency and accountability, for the state to remain relevant and competitive amongst the comity of states.

Abdulrazaq inspects ongoing rural roads, says govt committed to inclusive growth, access to market

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq inspected different rural roads under construction in Asa local government area on Tuesday, in what he called continuous efforts to spread development to every segment of the state.

The Governor visited the 17.7km Madi-Peeke and the 23.23km Okolowo Express-Sokoto-Tafatafa-Elere-Owode Oja-Baba Kudu-Akopari-Otte Oja Road, all in Asa.

He told the authorities in charge of the projects to deliver a good job within reasonable time.

The Governor said he keyed into the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) to deepen farmers’ access to the market and enhance sustainable life and businesses for rural dwellers.

RAAMP is jointly funded by the World Bank and French Development Agency, with the state government providing at least N4bn counterpart funds to date.

“There is a lot of work going on in the state in terms of infrastructure. This is a rural road project that seeks to link our people to the market and city centres,” the Governor told reporters after inspecting the 17.5km Madi–Peeke  and 23.23km Okolowo Express-Sokoto-Tafatafa-Elere-Owode Oja-Baba Kudu–Akopari-Otte Oja Road.

The tour gave him another opportunity to touch base with people in different rural communities, saying the government remains committed to their welfare.

“Access to the market means empowerment and increase in GDP for the people at the grassroots,” he added.

The Governor also visited a Garri processing centre in Owode Oja, where community folks commended him for staying in touch through different initiatives, especially social investment programme which has benefited them.

He also visited a Primary Health Care centre in the area.

“The most important thing for the government to do now is not just empowering those at the bottom but making sure that they have an active and sustainable life and sustainable businesses,” he said.

“That is why we visit this community where they produce Gari. The next step is to find a way to mechanise them without them losing their jobs and enhancing their productivity as well.”

AbdulRazaq said the implementation of the new tax regime initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was to enhance the overall development of the country.

“So, basically, we are to make sure that those at the bottom benefit from this great enhancement of the economy. With the liberalisation of the economy, especially the coming of implementation of the new tax regime, things are really going to change, and we should prepare for that,” he added.

“There is an increase in revenue at state and local government levels. We are here to make sure it passes down to the people at the grassroots. You can see that happening in different forms.”

State Coordinator of RAAMP, Engr Isaac Kolo said they are currently constructing line drains and culverts, adding that the earth works and surface dressing will commence as soon as the rain stops.

APC Women Leader in Owode Oja Community, Mrs Suleiman Hamdalat, and Chairperson for Gari Processing Association in that community, Mrs Khadijat Jimoh, appreciated the Governor’s commitment and his passion for the well-being of the people at the grassroots.

‘Power should shift to North district’

AbdulRazaq had in his first term assured of a power shift to the zone.

The aspirants said this in Ilorin, the state capital, at a stakeholders’ meeting.

They pleaded with other senatorial districts to concede the seat of governance in the state to Kwara North.

They spoke at stakeholders’ by Senator representing the zone at the National Assembly, Sodiq Umar, the House of Assembly Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Chairman Abdullahi Samari.

The APC deputy chair added that the meeting was convened “to put our house in order and let the world know that Kwara North is prepared and ready to take over from the current administration come 2027.

According to him, the senatorial district have resolved to continue with Abdulrazaq’s good work, assuring Kwarans that whoever emerges as the governorship candidate will perform wonders to the amazement of those who think we don’t have materials.

“We have also invited the aspirants today for them to sit down and work together so that those who claim we cannot work together will know it is not true. We are trying to put our house in order to the envy of others who never thought we can work in unity.

“Principally, APC has guidelines and that will be followed before a candidate will emerge.

“We want to assure Kwarans and Nigerians that those aspiring to govern the state from Kwara north are people with enough wisdom and experience; people with fear of God, love for the masses, and have resolved to work together.”

All the four aspirants took turns to express their resolve to rally round anyone that will eventually emerge as the governorship candidate in 2027.

Also, Senator Umar said the governorship seat is what the zone has been “hungry for in the interest of Kwara first and of course, our region.

“All we are asking is for Kwarans to trust us and give us this opportunity to also govern the state.

“There is no division between us. We are all working together. Kwara north is united and not divided. We are one people and the same family.”

Speaker Danladi-Salihu waxing spiritual, said the project is God’s and “by God’s grace, we will reach the destination.

“We are only pleading with Kwara south and central senatorial districts to support the northern zone to have the ticket in 2027.”

Another aspirant, Audu said that “we are all united in support of a single cause of producing the governor for our zone in 2027.

“I use this forum to implore Kwarans to support us in the interest of the whole state because we are all Kwarans.”

Aligning with his colleagues, Mahmud praised the leadership of the party for the opportunity afforded them to come together and “talk in common voice.

“I want to assure that whoever gets the governorship ticket in 2027, we will support the person with all that we have to succeed. The zone is one and not divided.”
