  • Agency warns of more flooding in Kwara, Kogi, Niger

THE Niger Basin Authority with headquarters in Niamey, Niger Republic has warned of imminent flooding in Nigeria in its latest alert level.

It warned people on the river banks in Niger, Kwara and Kogi as well as those people in the flood plains and river banks to prepare for more flooding.

The NBA is a regional body of nine-member countries in the West and Central Africa, namely: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Chad.

The regional body said it noticed progressive increase in water level of the River Niger at 580 cm, which culminated in its Yellow alert. It was issued on September 7.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) urged Federal and state governments to prepare sites for a possible flood situation in a situation of orange alert.

The statement reads: “Since September 1, 2017, a yellow alert on water level was reached at the hydrometric station of Niamey. This yellow alert lasted seven days until September 7, with a progressive increase of water level until reaching the yellow level limit of 580 cm.

“The Orange alert level is reached on September 7, 2017. Forecasts and gages reading from upstream Niamey show that this orange alert situation will last the next three days.

“It should be noted that at this orange alert level, any progressive increase of water levels could have significant impacts on people and property in areas of flood risk.

“In this situation of orange alert, it is more suggested to prepare sites for a possible flood situation.”

It added: “The rise of water level at Niamey will propagate downstream toward Malanville station in Republic of Benin and the station of Jidere Bode upstream Kainji Dam in Federal Republic of Nigeria. Riparian people should be particularly vigilant, especially those living in areas at flood risk.”

The statement said the agency would continue to monitor the situation and provide information as it develops.

NBA Director-General Moses Beckley said Nigeria should expect more floods of the magnitude comparable to that of 2012 flood.

He said the flood alert level issued by the NBA was above normal, which Nigeria should be wary of.

Beckley said the agency expects the water to have entered Nigeria through River Niger three days after the alert was issued.

“It is above normal (yellow alert). The consequence of that is that there will be more flow into the Nigeria area through the River Niger. Since Nigeria is low land, the effect is that as that water comes expect the water to have arrived Nigeria from three days after the alert.

“The Jebba and Kainji dams, which were constructed for this same purpose to control the flow of water from upstream, especially water coming from outside, have been so properly manage. I want to believe have been so, that they will be able to contain that water, they will be able to release this water that it will not cause devastation downstream.”

But Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu has directed the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to relocate 100 households affected by flooding in Dole-Kaina Area of Dandi Local Government to a safer place.

Bagudu gave this directive in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Alhaji Abubakar Dakingari, in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.

He directed the agency to provide the victims with food items, potable water, drugs and mattresses as well as to resettle them in a virgin land.

“We will also appeal to the press not to at anytime hesitate to either get to any principal officer of the party at the state level or myself to clarify anything that is not clear on the activities of the party.

  • Kwara youths decry dissolution of PDP executives

Kwara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youths have criticised the dissolution of the State Executive Committee by the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.

The youths are also demanding for the restoration of the Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo –led executive.

The state executive was disbanded at the recent PDP national convention.

The aggrieved youths alleged that the dissolution of the executive was suspicious and a collusion between Makarfi and certain politicians to weaken opposition in Kwara.

Prior to the dissolution of the executive of the party in Kwara, both Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo and Sunday Fagbemi battled for the control of the leadership of the party with their two groups.

Led by the former factional assistant publicity secretary of the party in the state, Oluwafemi Yusuf, the aggrieved youths insisted that the dissolution was in bad faith and asked the national leadership of the PDP to reverse its decision, warning that there was no justification for such.

They argued that the state congress, which re-elected Oyedepo in May 10, last year, was successfully conducted in the presence of delegation from the National Secretariat of the party, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agents in line with electoral law.

The youths said: “We the concerned Kwara PDP Youths received the news of dissolution of Kwara State PDP Exco led by Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo with great shock and bemusement because there was no justification for such dissolution.

  • Germany to partner NGO on waste to wealth

Germany to partner NGO on waste to wealth

The German government has pledged its technical and financial support for a non-governmental organisation, Vicfold Recyclers to convert waste to wealth.

Vicfold Recyclers, an Ilorin, Kwara State environment-based NGO, specialises in collecting waste, especially plastic bottles from households with a fee being paid in return.

The German support is in the area of providing machines to Vicfold Recyclers to crush the plastic bottles collected and turn them to useable materials.

German Ambassador to Nigeria, Bernhard Schlagheck made the pledge in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, during the presentation of the winner of ‘You for G20 Competition’ to Vicfold Recyclers.

Represented by Press and Diplomacy Officer, German Embassy, Abuja, Nigeria, Ludwig Jung, Mr. Schlagheck said, “Over 200 budget proposals and applications were submitted and after a rigorous selection process Vicfold Recyclers came on top. We are here today to hand over the certificate of ‘You for G20 Competition’ to the NGO and also to pledge support for the project.

“The German government will support Vicfold Recyclers with equipment and machines for the processing of all the waste to useful materials.

It has submitted proposals for the upscaling of the NGO and we will support that. We will support the project not only symbolically but financially.”

Founder of VicFold Recyclers, Victor Amusa hailed the decision of the German government to assist his fledging NGO.

Amusa said, “It is surprising that this event is holding today. It actually goes to show that little effort counts. Right actions taken towards sustainability someday get rewarded, because when we saw the contest for ‘you for G20 competition,’ it all happened in the confines of our room. It dawned on us on how else we need to put what we do out.. We had 19,368 votes. The internet community was wonderful. To us at our local corner here in Ilorin, there is this belief by the internet community.

“The passion is there, but the support was no longer there. Most times I used the car for our logistics to convey waste here, then we would get back to car wash for cleaning up. It got to a time we stopped washing it. The ‘You for G20 competition’ winning came to us as a

moral booster.  There is no way we can right the history of Vicfold Recyclers without remembering the German mission. They have been very wonderful.

“Let me also add that the problem of plastic waste is that of portability. We looked a situation when we are taking waste from you you get an alert immediately. It is has been wonderful. Each time we reward our subscribers, you see the joy, happiness and inner fulfilment from them.

“We are going to make the German mission proud of its decision to select our project out of the over 200 applicants. When we make them proud it will open opportunities for the teaming young population we have. It is going to get our hands busy and make the economy of our state gets buoyant. It is also put food on the table of the unemployed women. We are so particular about the women because when you feed a woman you will feed a nation.”
