  • Kwara APC suspends council vice chair, two others

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has suspended the Vice Chairman of Baruten Local Government, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Ibrahim and two others for alleged anti-party activities.

Ibrahim’s suspension will last for six months.

Other suspended members are Alhaji Samari Abdullahi and the Coordinator of G20, Alhaji Abubakar Gunu. They were suspended for one year each.

This brings to seven in the last three days, the number of people suspended in the local government.

Last Friday, the council Chairman, Muhammed Omar Bio and former lawmaker, Senator Mohammed Ahmed, were suspended for the same offence.

Ahmed represented Kwara North in the Senate.

Other suspended members are a lawmaker in the outgoing House of Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Sabi, Alhaji Aliyu Kora Sabi and Muhammed Sunu Gofe. They were suspended for one year each.

In a statement yesterday, APC spokesperson Alhaji Sulyman Buhari said: “The party has ordered the suspension of another three of its members in Baruten Local Government for anti-party activities.

“Their suspension followed a report submitted by a panel of enquiry by the leadership of APC in the state. It is with immediate effect.”

  • Eleven dead in Kwara road crash

Auto accident Wednesday claimed the lives of no fewer than eleven people in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The accident was allegedly caused by head on collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and Turbo truck in Oko-Olowo along Ilorin/Mokwa Road, Ilorin outstirk.

Those that died were inside the bus with registration number GA 52 XA, while eight others sustained serious injuries. The trailer turbo was marked XA 939 GZA.

The single lane road is one of the busiest roads in Nigeria as it remains the shortest link between the Northern part of Nigeria and the people of South West geo political belt.

The road is plied daily by heavily loaded trailers and commercial buses on trading missions.

The road is laden with dangerous bends, making overtaking dangerous due to apparent poor visibility occasioned by the bends.

The sector commander of the FRSC in Kwara state Mary Wakawa confirmed the accident, adding the accident occurred at about 2am.

It was gathered that the bus was heading to an unnamed state in the northern part of the country while the truck was said to be coming from Kebbi state to Oyo state when the accident happened.

A farmer said that; “we heard a big bang around 2am inside our hut and sporadic wailing of human beings but none of us could come out to verify the true situation until dawn when we got to the horrible scene.”

When our reporter visited the scene at 7:05am, congealed human blood was noticed on the road just as food stuff and clothes littered the scene and its perimeter.

Also, men of the FRSC were clearing the blocked road forcing motorists to drive at snail speed.

The FRSC men were packing badly mutilated bodies of the victims inside a Hilux van just as eight injured persons with two of them suspected to have sustained severe spinal cord injuries were carefully put inside FRSC’s ambulance.

The two vehicles later headed to the direction of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.

Wakawa said that the dead toll was high because of the nature of the accident and the time of its occurrence which prevented any prompt rescuing operation.

She said: “We had always cautioned motorists against night travelling. The inherent dangers in it far outweigh whatever gains they claim are in it. We will not relent on this campaign until we get the needed results.

“We also want to use this opportunity to warn drivers against reckless driving. It does no one any good. On this side, a careful driver may be there but his care is incomplete until the other road users on the other side are equally careful. We should also warn those thinking that Juju can save them when accidents occur.”

  • Kwara community raises N13m to rebuild market

    •Saraki sends delegation to monarch

Offa community in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State has raised N13 million to rebuild its burnt Owode Market, which was razed last week.

Offa monarch, Oba Mufutau Gbadamo, spoke on the raised fund when he hosted a delegation from Senator Bukola Saraki, led by the Director-General of his ABS Constituency Office, Musa Ayinla Yeketi.

The monarch expressed appreciation to Saraki for sending the high-powered team.

He said: “Our community is deeply touched and we believe that all of us must stand up in our usual communal collaboration to come to the aid of the victims because there is no compound that does not have a person among them.

“Besides it’s painful that people who fend for themselves now sit at home doing nothing.”

The monarch added: “I had to quickly rush home from Umrah (lesser Hajj) to personally oversee the repair works and bring succour to the people.

“We are aware that due to the economic downturn, the government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility. Therefore, we call on all and sundry to assist us. In fact, I have also decided not to go on Umrah during Ramadan because I cannot see myself out of the community when my people are in pains.”

Oba Gbadamosi assured that Offa residents were praying for Saraki to emerge the next Senate President “because we are absolutely convinced that his choice will benefit the state and other part of Nigeria”.

Yeketi’s team visited the victims and inspected the damage to the market.

The team leader said Saraki was deeply touched because he considers himself a son of the town because of the love the people have always shown to him.

It congratulated Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on his re-election.

His words: “We congratulate Governor Ahmed on his re-election.

  • Voters’ apathy greets election in Kwara

    •Ahmed, Saraki, others lament

Low voter turn-out greeted the governorship and House of Assembly election in Kwara State yesterday, even as proceedings went peacefully.

In some polling units visited, electoral materials and personnel arrived earlier than the previous elections. However, only a handful of voters were on ground at 9.45 am for accreditation.

The scenario wasn’t much different in the border communities of Baruten Local Government Area of the state.

At the LGEA Primary School in Ilesha-Baruba, where the state Deputy Governor, Elder Peter Kishira, was accredited, the process also witnessed a serious low turn-out of the electorate.

The state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Senator Bukola Saraki, lamented the low turn-out, but hailed the peaceful conduct.

    The situation later improved.

Senator Saraki, who attributed the early low turnout during accreditation to the outcome of the last presidential and National Assembly elections, said party leaders made efforts to mobilise more people for the exercise.

Speaking with reporters shortly after casting his ballot at about 1.33pm, Governor Ahmed said the number of people who came out was low, adding that it was still all right, given the peaceful nature of the election.

He expressed satisfaction with the security arrangement, adding that he was still in support of the use of PVCs.

Asked to appraise the 2015 elections, Ahmed said the greatest lesson is in the fact that for the first time Nigerians have been able to take back political power for themselves.

Also speaking shortly after accreditation at his Ode Opobiyi polling unit, Senator Saraki described the exercise as peaceful, orderly and well-organised, adding that “people are ready to be patient, tolerant and carry out their civic duty.”

Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, however said the voters’ apathy was due to what he termed “the lacklustre attitude of security agencies in the last elections.”

The minister, who voted in the same polling unit with Senator Saraki complained of inadequate security presence in the last elections and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to relocate the three polling units at Ode Opobiyi, saying they were sited in residential areas.

Another APC chieftain, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, who voted at his Baboko ward, said a lot of Nigerians expect a lot from the incoming administration of President Mohammadu Buhari, noting that they were not that concerned with the state elections.

Polling Centres: Police to arrest politicians with armed security

Preparatory to Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections, the Nigeria police Friday vowed to arrest any political office holder who parades polling centres with armed security personnel.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Training and Development, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike told reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital while speaking on the level of preparations for Saturday’s election.

He added that, the police authorities has deployed all necessary personnel across the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory so as to record another huge success like that of presidential and national assembly polls in the country.

Mr. Adenaike said that the “the police would not allow any political office holders to carry guns and ammunitions to the polling booths in order not allow any intimidation of voters during the poll.”

He said that; “the political office holders should comport themselves according to the law of the land by going to the polling booths to cast their votes without ‎any intimidation whatsoever.”

Adenaike who said he was in Kwara to supervise the elections added that, the people should obey the restriction period of 8am to the 5pm.

He said that, police would not allow any movement of people across the length and breadth of the country so as to prevent any alleged plans by any politicians to move voters to other places in the country.

‎He said that, the police was poised to achieve another success like the last presidential and national elections across the country.

Adenaike who described Kwara as a peaceful state said that, the people of the state should come out without any hindrance to cast their votes.

  • Gbemi Saraki, PDP youth leader defect to APC in Kwara

Gbemi Saraki, PDP youth leader defect to APC in Kwara

At last a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara state, Senator Gbemisola Saraki Tuesday, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Also, the party’s State Youth Leader, Chief Segun Olawoyin formally announced his defection to APC

While Gbemisola announced her decision in Ilorin, Olawoyin made his declaration at a colourful ceremony in Offa, Offa local government area of the state.

The two leaders urged their supporters to vote massively for the party on Saturday.

Senator Saraki said she had joined the APC a fortnight ago but only needed to formalise the defection.

She said she was humiliated by some leaders because of her identity as a Saraki offspring.

She said: “Several friends and associates have asked me why we moved and I have responded by telling them that the reasons are not farfetched; the reason is as important as who we are as political organization. Our ideology finds roots in championing the cause of the grassroots; upholding equity and justice, and especially the vision for a meaningful and passionate leadership. We believe that a true leadership must be predicated on certain values that must be sacrosanct, which must also follow the sanctity of democratic ethos.

“When we joined Kwara PDP, it was for the main reason of enlarging these inalienable values and re-engineering the processes of leadership through the party in order to mirror the true aspirations of Kwarans. Considering the circumstance of the party at the State level, we knew we had to work harder and make sacrifices to deliver a party that would represent the yearnings of our people.

“However, the ensuing pattern of animosity within PDP was strongly placing our ideology on the crosshair of political attacks by elements within the party. Furthermore, the party was evidently hijacked from evolving into a political force that can accommodate the broad interests of the people but allowed to tarry to the selfish ambitions of some elements within its fold.

“Thus, instead of presenting pragmatic solutions and workable templates for developing Kwara, the party abandoned presenting alternative policies and went on meaninglessly attacking and castigating not only the opposition, but even those within the party, especially my very self for no other good reason other than the accident of my birth; a birth of which, by the way, I am very proud of.

“The last straw however, was the failure of the PDP to respect the place of women in politics as a basis of an inclusive template of leadership.

“We therefore have come to the sad realization that the seeming marginalization of women in the PDP is deeply embedded in the party system and leadership and all attempts to cause a change from within have been met with brick walls and blatant prejudices against women leadership.

“The choice was therefore clear – a constricted, backward vision of Kwara, which the opposition represents, or a bold step into the future that guarantees fairness, justice and hope. Thus, the move from the PDP into the APC was an easy decision for us considering our history with PDP and our vision for our future.

“After wide consultations, we found in APC a platform that mirrors the ideals of our political family both in content and context especially with under the leadership of General Muhammdu Buhari.

“We are assured in the promise of the APC for a new Nigeria. We are confident in the commitment of the President-elect to social justice, rule of law and economic posterity for all.”

Olawoyin said that he had earlier in the day attended a meeting of PDP members set to defect to the APC.

He was convinced the end had come for the PDP given the calibre of people he saw at the meeting.

He hinged his decision to dump the PDP to the call of his community pointing out that while he remained in the PDP his people had consistently pleaded with him to team up with the progressives.

“With Gbemi Saraki also coming to the APC it means the synergy between the Sarakis and Olawoyin political families will only get stronger.”

He added that that his sojourn in the PDP was full of disappointments.
