    National Gallery goes to KWASU

Even as the year was about to end in 2025, the National Gallery of Art (NGA) an agency of the federal government of Nigeria in the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, still had time to enter an agreement  with Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.  The agreement was in form of strategic partnership for NGA to construct an Art Academy within the university premises.  This was on December 17, 2025 and the partnership was themed: Memorandum of Understanding between NGA and KWASU.

In a statement, Emeka Odiari, Director, Information Services Department of NGA made it clear that NGA will continue to engage in town-and-gown programmes which are aimed at sensitizing art students on the need to take the course serious.  Fine Arts is obviously one of the courses that has been designed to keep Nigerian contemporary and modern arts in the front-burner.

And since the NGA is entrusted with such responsibility, a town and gown memorandum of understanding is one of the best ways to bring the message nearer to the young and aspiring artists.  Therefore, the strategic partnership has come at a time when the Creative Economy needs the best from the young ones.  The students have a lot to gain from this programme.  Once the space is created, it will sure boast their chances of meeting and mixing with bigger artists when the opportunity calls for it.

The statement says further: “Under the proposed partnership; (NGA-KWASU Art academy and Creative Hub) the University will provide land for the construction of an Art Academy and Creative Hub that will house studios for painting, sculpture, ceramics; textile; new media and digital art. Others are Exhibition hall; Accommodation for visiting artists and art residences; Art shops; Sculpture gardens; parking spaces and landscaping.

He noted that this program me is part of the Federal goverment’s strategy designed to strengthen Institutional partnerships, empower youths creativity while making the Creative sector more vibrant and productive.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Shaykh Luqman who signed on behalf of the university, noted that the art academy is to be located at the Osi campus of the university. He praised the DG, NGA, for his unrelenting commitment towards the development of art and the welfare of artist.

NGA under the vibrant and visionary leadership of it’s DG, Ahmed Sodangi has signed up several collaborations with both local and International cultural organisations, festivals, corporate entities and influential stakeholders in the creative sector. These partnerships have established the NGA as a central hub, significantly expanding oppurtunities for programme delivery and resource mobilization. It also aims to enrich cultural dialogue and encourage broader public engagement in the arts, ultimately elevating the status and appreciation of Nigeria’s rich artistic heritage globally.

NAAS raises security concerns over planned relocation of KWASU students

The National Association of Agricultural Students (NAAS) has raised concerns over recent plan by Kwara State Government to relocate the Faculty of Agriculture at Kwara State University (KWASU) to Ilesha Baruba, a community in Kwara North battling serious security threats.

NAAS urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to rescind the decision on the planned relocation of KWASU Agricultural students.

A statement by NAAS President, Com. Bashar Abdulazeez. said many of the affected students were worried following reports of another attack in the area, with multiple sources confirming loss of six to seven lives.

He stated that the students have raised urgent concerns about their safety and the dangers associated with relocating them to such an environment, adding that “as national body committed to the welfare and academic well-being of agricultural students, we find this development deeply troubling.”

The statement reads: “While we sympathise with the communities affected by these violent attacks, we must also affirm that no educational reform or expansion should come at the cost of students’ lives. Students deserve an environment where they can learn without fear, and where their right to education is protected, not threatened.

“The Faculty of Agriculture should remain within a secure and academically conducive zone, and the idea of moving students to a region with such volatility should be suspended immediately.

“We urge the Kwara State Government, led by His Excellency Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, to reconsider this policy direction and engage all relevant stakeholders, including the leadership of NAAS, before taking any further step on this matter.

“The university administration under the Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Lukman Alade Jimoh, is also encouraged to increase on-campus security and ensure that students remain protected in the face of growing insecurity in the state.

“We commend the government’s efforts in responding to security challenges across the state but emphasize that more targeted action is required, especially in regions like Ilesha Baruba where student lives could be at stake.

“The leadership of NAAS remains committed to monitoring the situation and standing in solidarity with our members in Kwara State. We will continue to advocate for safe, inclusive, and student-centered policies that promote academic excellence without putting lives at risk.”

KWASU to sanction fresh students for tarnishing institution’s image on social media

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, in Moro Local Government Area, has announced plans to penalize some fresh students for allegedly tarnishing the institution’s reputation on social media.

In a letter addressed to the entire student body, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, expressed disappointment over viral videos showing some students in KWASU matriculation gowns portraying the institution in a negative light.

“You will all have seen the videos of some students portraying your institution in a bad light. The students were wearing Kwara State University’s matriculation gowns and depicting themselves as unworthy to be students of an institution of higher learning,” the statement read.

Prof. Jimoh condemned the act, stating that it undermines the hard work of lecturers dedicated to grooming students into respectable individuals. He emphasized that such actions ridicule the integrity and excellence on which the institution is built.

He urged students to take pride in KWASU and protect its reputation, reminding them that the university’s certificate will be a lifelong part of their identity.

“The integrity of Kwara State University is ours to protect. It is our collective responsibility to uphold this university, as her name will always be a part of our history,” he added.

“The students in those videos have been identified and will be made to face disciplinary actions. This is to caution them and others from trivialising what should be treated with honour.

“I must reiterate that KWASU belongs to you, KWASU belongs to me, KWASU belongs to all of us. We must protect her name and image. I urge you all, my dear students, to collectively resist any motivation to cast your institution in any negative light.

“There are thousands of KWASU graduates spread all around the world doing great feats in different areas. Soon, you all too will go into the world holding the KWASU certificate, and I know you would be proud to say you hold a degree from Kwara State University as your predecessors have shown the world that the KWASU graduate is an excellent and formidable individual.

“I, once again, urge you to be law-abiding and focus on being the best you can be. On our part, we will spare nothing to ensure you become the best version that you can be.”
