Johnson: Mimiko has hijacked Labour Party

Kolawole Johnson, who just resigned as the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State, spoke with LEKE AKEREDOLU on Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s alleged plan to impose a governorship candidate on the party.

Why did you resign as the LP Chairman?

This question reminds me of 2014 when we decided to stay back to ensure the party was not buried by the same people that are battling for its soul today. The answer then was that it was principle and that has not changed today. Principle! I have read different versions of report that gave reasons for my resignation. Some partly correct while some are mischief per excellence. A revered friend sent me one and I replied. He was furious because he knew what transpired, he was aware of the drama for weeks before it finally ended with my letter. He expected me to be angry but I kept smiling because I knew I have done my best to the satisfaction of my conscience, my faith and my creeds. I expect sound minds to read between the lines. The reason is well spelt out. I said and you can quote again: “It is with a sense of strong character which determines moral purpose and set of things we choose or avoid, that I tender my resignation letter today”. The elders will say, ‘Kaka ki Kiniun se akapo ekun, wan yaa se ode won lotooto ni. I leave you to interpret that. I have raised my voice in the public space to speak on certain matters, will I turn back to say they were no longer so? No! You must have some measure of respect for your words. Perhaps you know, it is expected of you at some levels to see more, hear more but talk less. So, I will not go into some details in order not to give room for some folks to think we are pained. No, I am actually glad with my head high that I stood for what I believe to the end. I am proud of that. Though many stakeholders are actually angry at my decision to quit, but I had to at that point. It was becoming too deadly and wisdom is profitable to direct. I don’t know if you were at the venue of that stakeholders meeting on Saturday, July 30.  They never and can never accuse me of betrayal.

But, it was rumoured that your executive at the state level was sacked. how true is this?

Let me laugh in Spanish. That is to show how pained they are. I informed the national body of my decision to resign and dropped my letter few days after. My letter was duly received by the national secretariat on the 28th of July. The photocopies of the letter are here for you. Can you see the date? Well, I am not surprised because you know where you got that version of innuendoes. Are you expecting anything better? When governors’ aides start writing releases for another political party, then, you shouldn’t be surprised. When some of you called to ask why I was not at the stakeholders’ meeting of July 30, I informed them of my resignation and sent the letter to them but added a caveat that it is only for proofs and nothing more. Dissolving the body long after my exit should not be a surprise anyway. I, Kolawole, resigned willingly. If stomach ulcer ( Etanu ),  will not allow some folks to take in that peacefully, I forgive them wholeheartedly.

Governor Mimiko was alleged to be plotting to impose a candidate on the party, ahead of governorship poll. Is this true?

Let me remind you that I was not present at that particular meeting. Infact my absence was responsible for its abrupt end. I would resigned some few days before the meeting and I was trying as much as possible to ensure my exit does not lead to crisis so I had to maintain an expressible silence. Of course, those expressing that fear know what they’re talking about and I am sure your people would have gotten more information about it from them. I learnt one of the elders in the meeting alleged that the fellow to be used resigned that same week or thereabout. Now, let me take you back to the interview I granted some months ago. I said and I quote “ I don’t know their definition of anti-party. You belong to a party openly. yet, you are still fighting dirty to plant yourself in another party claiming you want to have a fall back option.” I threatened to even write the PDP to report the anti-party activities. So, the people at the stakeholders meeting are aware of all of these and more. Perhaps some of them have been spoken to for possible support for a certain individual who was in the governor’s cabinet but working to run under Labour Party. But, nobody would doubt the fact that I would have resisted that vehemently as the sitting chairman. Like a revered elder told me that he would rather work for the number one than staying with a second option that will mess him up. Infact, the drama that led to my exit was not without the intrigue of their plot. it’s all about the game.

However, let me be clear, having that option in the face of the lingering crisis in their party is not a crime but the way they are going about it is inhuman. I hope they know that the master trapper can also be entrapped.

Do you think the LP will bounce back in the state?

That is one question we should leave to time. However, note this; the true owners of the party shall lay hold on her some day. I strongly believe in the ethos of Labour Party. Leaving the Alliance for Democracy to Labour Party was a good experience; the progressivism spirit is alive. That is why we are bent on having a party and not someone’s chess board. My only fear now is that most of our members who have laboured so hard to keep the party alive in the past two years have vowed to quit and seek refuge elsewhere.

In a press statement made available to journalists and signed by the state Chairman and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Kelly Ogbeloi and Hon. Sam Uruopa respectively, the LP disowned a banner bearing the logo of the party with the inscription “Labour Party for Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu forward Ever Backward Never”.

“Our Party is taken  aback at the  fraud perpetuated by the PDP aimed at earning cheap popularity especially at this time where Edo people are trying to forget and forgive them of their past misrule fraud and under
    development of Edo state.

“A party desirous of victory in the scheduled Edo election must be above board and show its sincerity, commitment, honesty and integrity to Edo people in order to earn their trust and confidence. This is more so for the People Democratic Party.”

  • Senate APC, Labour party caucus pledge absolute support to Buhari

Senate APC, Labour party caucus pledge absolute support to Buhari

The joint caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party in the Senate Thursday pledged support for President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government.

Members of the joint caucus said at a press conference in Abuja that they are stoutly behind the policies and programmes of President Buhari led administration.

Senate Chief Whip, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, in a speech said that they are shocked at the partisan reaction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senators to the on-going investigations and recovery of public funds meant for the prosecution of the war against insurgency.

Members of the Senate caucus of the PDP had on Wednesday said that they have withdrawn support from President Buhari due to alleged persecution of their members in parts of the country.

Senator Adeyeye who represents Osun Central Senatorial District, noted that contrary to the position of PDP Senator the on-going investigation of the arms deal is not a partisan war against any party.

Senator Adeyeye who was flanked by 14 other APC Senators and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the only Labour Party Senator said: “The members of the Joint Caucus of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Labour Party Senators in the Senate are stoutly behind the policies and programmes of the President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration.

“Our support is aimed at actualizing the promised desired change that Nigerians voted for last year.

“We are shocked at the totally partisan reaction of our colleagues from the minority party, PDP, to the on-going investigations and recovery of public funds meant for the prosecution of the war against insurgency.

“Contrary to the assertion of our PDP colleagues, the investigation is not a partisan war against a particular political party.

“It is no longer a news item that there was a wanton diversion of public funds meant for fighting insurgency to fund campaigns of PDP.

“Members of the PDP were the sole and iniquitous beneficiaries of this diversion.

“Seeking to recover diverted public funds is neither dictatorial nor against the rule of law.

“In all the actions, programmes and policies of the PMB-led APC Federal Government, no PDP member has been unjustly arrested or imprisoned on mere allegations.

“On the contrary, we are daily regaled with news of millions and billions of naira of public funds traced to accounts of individuals some of whom have accepted to return such diverted public funds.

“As law abiding and patriotic citizens, we cherish the rule of law and the separation of powers among the different arms of government.

“Political interference based on partisan consideration must be eschewed.

“Members of the joint caucus of the APC and Labour Party will always give their best in support of the only President Nigeria has.

“We plead with our PDP colleagues to rise above partisan inclinations so that together, we all can bring to fruition the positive changes that our people seek and deserve.”

Adeyeye also assured that the caucus is prepared to support any member of the APC occupying any public office.

  • Tribunal dismisses LP’s petition against Bello

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for Kogi sitting in Abuja on Wednesday dismissed the petition filed by the Labour Party for failing to substantiate its claims.

Justice Halima Muhammad, the tribunal Chairman in a two-hour judgment, dismissed the petition, saying that it lacked merit.

According to her, there are not enough evidences to prove the allegations made by the party in the petition.

Muhammad said that the evidence given by a witness of the petitioner that he did not write a report after monitoring the election closed the case of the petitioner.

She also said that the allegation of corrupt practices by the petitioner during the conduct of the election could not be substantiated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party had alleged that there were issues of irregularities during the conduct of 2015 Kogi governorship election.

Labour Party also alleged in its petition that Gov. Yahaya Bello, the first respondent, was not validly elected and that his election was not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act.

It said that Bello did not participate in all the stages of the election and did not have a running mate before the conduct of the election.

The party also alleged that Bello had no valid nomination from his party.

Reacting to the judgment, Counsel to Labour Party, Mr Reuben Egwuaba, told newsmen that the party would study the judgment and file a notice of appeal.

“Constitutional qualification of Gov. Bello is not grounded in law; we will study the judgment and file a notice of appeal,’’ Egwuaba said.

  • ‘Why corruption still remains an issue for Buhari govt’

‘Why corruption still remains an issue for Buhari govt’

Leadership of 19 registered political parties Wednesday gave reason why corruption is still a primary issue for the Muhammad Buhari’s administration.

According to the political parties, previous attempt have not been as successful as they should be.

The noted that the anti-graft war is crucial to the survival of the country.

The political parties include Labour Party, LP, Action Alliance, AA, National Conscience Party, NCP, Democratic People’s Party, DPP, African Democratic Congress, ADC, Democratic Party of Nigeria, DPN, and MPPP amongst others.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja Wednesday, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who read the text of the media briefing on behalf of the parties, said.

“We want to put on record that we are solidly behind President Muhammad Buhari’s fight against corruption; a fight that we believe is crucial to the survival of our country.

“In fact, the reason corruption is still a primary issue for the Buhari administration is that previous attempts have not been as successful as they should be.”

They however noted that the way and manner the anti-graft agencies are carrying out the fight might scuttle the president’s noble intention.

He said; “We however wish to note that this is not the first time that a president of this country would be declaring a war against corruption. We aver that one of the major obstacles in the fight against political corruption in Nigeria over the years is the way and manner it has been fought so as to give the impression that the fight is selective and targeted only at perceived enemies of government.”

The political parties warned that “once an anti-corruption is perceived as politically motivated, then the entire war against corruption easily gets reduced to a means of settling political scores rather than genuine commitment to fighting corruption. We are afraid that if care is not taken, the President Buhari’s avowed commitment to fighting corruption may end up in the ways of his predecessors.”

Citing the recent clearance of the Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Justice Danladi Umar by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) of allegation of misconduct, the political parties noted that the commission’s posture was a wrong signal arguing that it is only the law court that can do so.

The parties therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct an immediate investigation to unravel the circumstances which led to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFFC, issuing the letter of clearance to Justice Danladi Umar over his alleged involvement in N10 million bribery scandal.

On the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Abdulsalam said the political parties were not against his trail, stressing that “President Buhari needs to act now, not to stop Saraki’s trial but to ensure that the process of fighting corruption does not end up being even more corrupt than the corruption it seeks to eliminate.”

The political parties however kicked against Justice Umar’s presiding over the trial.

According to them, “We recall that the Chairman of the Tribunal has himself been under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on allegations of bribery and corruption.

“We observe however that the preponderance of evidence that has been deployed so far against Dr. Saraki, including the Principal Prosecution Witness in the matter, were supplied by the EFCC.

“What that means is that the Chairman of the Tribunal, Mr. Danladi Umar, is not only beholden to, but also under the control of the prosecution. Invariably, since Mr. Danladi Umar has the prosecutors ‘axe dangling on his neck, his ability to do justice to the defendant would be naturally impaired.

“To make the matter worse, we noted how the EFCC, in an unprecedented act of desperation, hurriedly issued a memo re-activating a report to the AGF and SGF dated 5th March, 2015, which it now attempts to present as a clearance letter to Umar.

“If this act alone does not confirm the grand collusion between the EFCC and the Chairman of the Tribunal to tilt the scale of justice against Dr. Saraki, then nothing would. However, if this case is about strengthening probity and accountability in public office, we fully support it; even as we insist that justice must not only be done, but be seen by all to have been done to all.”

  • Bayelsa Assembly to swear-in three opposition members

Bayelsa Assembly to swear-in three opposition members

The Kombowei Benson-led Bayelsa State House of Assembly has bowed to pressure and opted to swear-in three lawmakers elected on the platforms of opposition political parties.

The Speaker, Benson, has been under attacks from different groups for failing to inaugurate the lawmakers four months after they were declared winners of their constituencies.

Benson has refused to administer oaths of office on Watson Belemote of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), representing Brass Constituency 2; Gibson Munalayefa of the Labour Party (LP) for Ogbia constituency 2 and Gabriel Ogbara of African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Ogbia constituency 3.

They were declared winners of their various constituencies four months ago by the Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The police, elders in the state under the aegis Bayelsa First Initiative (BFI) including the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation had warned Benson of the consequences of not swearing-in the lawmakers.

The Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson, was also accused of being the unseen hand behind the travails of the lawmakers.

    But Dickson denied involvement.

It was gathered Wednesday that Benson announced on the floor of the House that the members-elect would be sworn in Thursday.

He reportedly blamed the delay in their inauguration to faulty processes saying the elected lawmakers did not furnish the House with requisite documents on time.

He said as a law-making body, the House was under obligations to follow laid down procedure in swearing-in members and not to depend on petitions from lawyers.

  • Labour Party chairman slams defectors in Cross River

Labour Party chairman slams defectors in Cross River

The chairman of the Labour Party in Cross River State, Mr Austin Ibok has slammed defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) describing them as despicable.

Ibok said in Calabar, “I wonder if most of the defectors would have considered joining APC if the 2015 presidential elections was won by the PDP. I also wonder if they will remain in APC if their future political ambitions is not realised or the appointment they hope to get from the center is not given to them.”

He posited that if they are any set of people the APC must attend to first in terms of appointments and empowerment, it is the original APC members who kept faith with the party in the midst of nothing.

Ibok, who also doubles as the Special Adviser to the governor on Inter Party Affairs described the defectors as fair weather politicians who seek to gain from a party than contribute to make the party more formidable.

He urged leadership of the APC to be very careful with the defectors even as he hopes that those of them moving to APC today will not dump the party if the party loses power in future.

“The defectors especially those from Cross River State are the same people who have milked the state dry in the past 16 years in the various positions of responsibility they attained. They are merely looking for another opportunity and platform to continue to unleash their wicked tendencies as the defectors seem to have forgotten in a hurry how their new found party rose to power. It was was sheer hard work, perseverance, patience and commitment that gave APC its victory – a feature that is completely lacking in the new entrants,” he said.

He also noted that those picking holes in his appointment as Special Adviser on Inter Party Affairs that his appointment is as a result of the desire of the governor to run an all inclusive government where members of the opposition can also play a prominent role.

He said his appointment has not in any way stripped the party of its position as the most credible alternative platform.

He said the role of the opposition was to offer constructive criticism on government programmes and projects when it is anti people, offer solutions, as well as commend them when they do right.

“The role of the opposition is basically to checkmate government in order to help them deliver on their campaign promises, a role the Labour Party will continue to play,” he said.

  • A’Court nullifies House of Assembly election in Cross River

A’Court nullifies House of Assembly election in Cross River

The Appeal Court sitting in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, Friday nullified the April 11, 2015 House of Assembly elections for Yakurr 2 State Constituency in which Mr. Jonas Eteng William of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged winner.

Justice Onyekachi Otisi, who delivered the ruling, ordered that a rerun be conducted within 90 days.

The candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Captain Eno Utim Inah had proceeded to the Appeal Court on a 12-ground appeal after losing at the Tribunal.

Inah’s lawyer, Mr. Egere Osim, among others had argued against the issuance of the certificate of return, Exhibit 24 RE10, to the first respondent, Williams, on the 13th day of April 2015, when elected was yet to be concluded.

According to Osim, “Elections were concluded in 55 per cent of the constituency on the 25th day of April but yet, certificate of return was issued on the 13th. So we now said that the certificate of return is evidence of substantial non-compliance with the electoral act and the election manual.”

“The Tribunal said no and what we should have done was to prove and give evidence that election in the polling unit and ward was marred instead of harping on the certificate of return, but we said no, that the certificate of return being evidence tendered by the respondent supported our case and based on it the Appeal Court should nullify the election and based on that the court now agreed with us and nullified the election and called for return in 90 days.”

The ousted Williams did not object to the judgment.

He said he was prepared for the rerun and was certain he would still win.
