    Labourer beheads farmer in Ondo after consuming hard drugs

    A labourer, Sunday Clement, who beheaded a farmer, Taye Alatoye, has been remanded to prison custody by an Akure Chief Magistrate Court.

    Sunday, 24, killed his 30 years old victim while they were going to the farm.

    He was immediately arrested and handed over to the police.

    Sunday reportedly used his cutlass to sever Alatoye’s head from his body without any provocation.

    Police prosecutor, Mary Adebayo, said the defendant committed the offence on September 4, 2023, at about 2:30 pm at Baba Odun Camp, Ofosu, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

    Adebayo said the offence contravened Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. II Law of Ondo State, 2006.

    But the defendant, who pleaded for forgiveness, said he had taken a mixture of Crystal methamphetamine also known as ‘ice’ and marijuana.

    He said: “We were both going, and we greeted each other on the road. The spirit just came over me to cut off Taye’s head.

    “I can’t actually say what led to it. I think it was the ‘Ice’ I took in the hot sun.

    “The spirit just told me to go backward and I did.

    “All my eyes were blocked, and I heard another voice that instructed me to cut the man with the cutlass in my hand, which I did.

    “Immediately I did it, I came back to my senses and started crying before I was eventually apprehended by the police.”

    Presiding Magistrate, Folasade Aduroja, did not take Sunday’s plea for want of jurisdiction.

    Aduroja ordered the remand of the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre and directed that the case file be duplicated and sent to the DPP for advice.

    The case was adjourned to November 28, 2023.

  • Labourer gets 12 strokes of cane for smoking

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna, On Thursday ordered that a 23-year-old labourer, Mustapha Jibrin, be given 12 strokes of the cane for smoking at a notorious black spot.

    Jibrin, a resident of Ungwan Sarki in Kaduna, was convicted after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of constituting public nuisance.

    Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel passed the sentence after the convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Emmanuel said the court had indeed tempered justice with mercy because the convict was a first time offender.

    He advised the boy to be of good behavior, and enjoined his guardian, who was present in court, to advice him properly.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Leo Chidi, told the court that the convict was arrested at a black spot at Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna on Nov 5.

    According to Chidi, the convict and his friends had been caught smoking at the spot on many occasions and were warned to stay away from the spot.

    He said that a team of policemen attached to Gabasawa Police Station led by Inspector Abu Mohammed, arrested the convict on Nov. 5 when he failed to adhere to the instruction while his friends escaped.

    He added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 199 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.

  • Court remands labourer for allegedly disrupting ‘elders meeting’

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, ordered the remand in prison of a 24-year-old labourer, Adamu Zakari accused of disrupting an elders’ council security meeting and slapping a titled elder.

    Zakari is being tried on a 4-count charge of criminal conspiracy, possession of dangerous weapon, inciting disturbance and assault.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp Ahmed Ali, told the court that one Sani Barde arrested and brought the accused person to the Chanchaga Police station on May 30.

    Ali alleged that the accused accompanied by seven others, invaded the venue and disrupted the security meeting been held by elders of Chanchaga.

    He told the court that the accused allegedly slapped both the complainant and one of the titled elders of Chanchaga.

    The prosecutor told the court that a horn was recovered from the accused by the police.

    However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mr Jibrin Zabo, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter until June 26, for further mention.

  • Labourer charged with sexual assault

    A 23-year-old labourer, Peter Ochi, who allegedly assaulted three schoolgirls sexually, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides at 9, Bishop Hugh St., College area of Ogba, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and sexual assault.

    Police Prosecutor Clifford Ogu told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 27 at Jerare Summit Secondary School, Ogba.

    Ogu said the accused, a non-teaching staff member in the school, invited the girls of ages 12, 14 and 15 to a corner and started touching their private parts.

    “One of the girls told their school counsellor what happened and the accused was arrested for further questioning.”

    The offences violated Sections 134 and 168 and of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, on conviction, may be jailed at least two years.

    The accused, however, denied the charge.

    In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Taiwo Akanni granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Akanni said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until April 23.

    A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Nasarawa State, has sentenced a 23-year-old labourer, Dominic Etim, to 10 months’ imprisonment for stealing four tyres valued at N80, 000.

    Etim, who lives at Aso B in Mararaba, was arraigned on a charge of theft.

    The Judge, Mr. Albert Maga, however, gave the convict an option of N8, 000 fine.

    He said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt; therefore, the convict was guilty as charged.

    “The prosecution presented three witnesses and had established beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant was guilty.

    “I hereby sentence you (Dominic Etim) to 10 months’ imprisonment with an option of N8, 000 fine,” Maga ruled.

    He ordered the convict to pay N70, 000 as restitution to the complainant for the stolen tyres.

    The labourer was first arraigned on August 28 for theft, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Agabi Auta told the court that the case was reported at Aso Police Station by the complainant, Pius Ejiofor of Tudun Wada, Mararaba, on August 26.

    He said on the same date at 8a.m., the accused entered the complainant’s mechanic workshop at Mararaba while he was making a phone call and stole four tyres valued at N80, 000.

    Auta said the accused also stole the complainant’s clothes valued at N10, 000.

    “Etim was seen on August 26 by the complainant at Mararaba when he was about to board a bus and was arrested.”

    Labourer ‘impregnates’ 13-year-old

    A 25-year-old labourer, Anas Garba, was yesterday arraigned in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly putting a 13-year-old girl in the family way.

    Garba, from Sokoto, is facing a one-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Moses Uademevbo told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometimes in June 2017, at about 9:30pm at Iddo Railway Terminus compound.

    He alleged that Garba had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in his room which resulted in pregnancy.

    “The girl, whose mother sells food, was sent to deliver a message to the defendant. But he lured her inside his room and defiled her,” the prosecutor said.

    According to him, the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, admitted Garba to N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Sept. 20.

    ‘Money doubler’ charged with possession of fake currencies

    A labourer, who allegedly claimed to be able to reproduce ‎Naira and West African CFA francs, was on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
    Dennis Njoku, 38, of No. 26 Agowa Street, Bariga, is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and unlawful possession of counterfeit currencies.
    Police prosecutor Nosa Uhumwangho said Njoku was found with the notes by the police at Oshodi ‘sometime in the month of January 2017.’
    He alleged that Njoku, with intent to defraud, represented himself to his victims that he was capable of producing N1,000 notes and 200 pieces of fake N500 notes.
    The defendant was also accused of claiming that he could produce 100 pieces of N200 notes, 100 Benin Republic CFA coins and 10 CFA coins, by applying a chemical substance to pieces of paper or other materials.
    The court also heard that the defendant had in his possession samples of the fake currencies, which were suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.
    According to Uhumwangho, the offences were punishable under Sections 316 (a) and 329 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
    Njoku pleaded not guilty.
    Magistrate Wahab Balogun granted him N1million bail with two sureties in the like sum, one of whom must be a blood relation.
    He adjourned till August 17.
  • Labourer ‘assaults’ daughter

    The police in Kano have arraigned a 50-year-old labourer, Saminu Umar, at a Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting his 10-year-old daughter.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused is a resident at Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano.
    Magistrate Aminu Fagge ordered the remand of the defendant in prison custody and adjourned the case till February20.
    Prosecuting police Inspector Yusuf Sale, told the court that one Abdullahi Inusa (Mai Unguwa) of the defendant’s address, and Rabiu Umar, jointly reported the case to Rijiyar Zaki Police Division Kano on Sunday.
    “On the same day at about 10a.m., the defendant beat his daughter, Naja’atu and as a result, she sustained serious injuries on her eyes, mouth and hand.
    “The victim was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano for treatment,” he said.
    Umar pleaded not guilty.
