  • NYSC DG urges corps members to embrace small businesses

    Brigadier Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has charged corps members to engage in small-scale businesses after their service year to enable them to be self-reliant.

    Kazaure gave the advice on Friday when he paid an inspection visit to the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Kusalla, Karaye Local Government Area of Kano State.

    The NYSC director-general was in Kano State to inspect the ongoing orientation course of 2018 Batch ‘B’ Stream II.

    He enjoined the corps members to participate actively in all camp activities and avoid unnecessary travels throughout the service year.

    Kazaure said that in an effort to address accommodation challenges confronting corps members, the agency would request state governments to build corpers’ lodge in each of the 774 local government areas across the nation.

    The NYSC boss, who cautioned the corps members against patronising nightclubs, urged them to shun all acts of indiscipline and immorality.

    The director-general commended the state of facilities in the camp and urged the management of the NYSC in the state to ensure that they were properly maintained.

    He said that as part of efforts to improve the welfare of the corps members, the Federal Government had recently increased their transportation and feeding allowances.

    Earlier, the state NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Ladan Baba, said that over 2,100 corps members for Borno and Kano states were registered in the camp.

  • Kano: 8,000 rural dwellers to benefit from NYSC medical outreach

    The Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) in Kano state, Alhaji Ladan Baba, says about 8,000 people will benefit from the scheme’s medical outreach across the state.

    The Coordinator made this known on Tuesday while launching the medical outreach at Rugar Duka community in Kura Local Government Area of the state.

    According to him, 2,000 people are expected to benefit in each of the four selected communities by the scheme.

    “In Kano, we are planning to embark on such medical outreach as part of the NYSC’s initiative across selected communities quarterly,” he said

    He said the gesture was part of the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers ( HIRD ) in the state in the four selected communities.

    Baba said that the programme was also aimed at mobilising corps members to provide health intervention to the general public, especially those in the rural communities.

    Baba explained that the week-long intervention programme include; diagnosis, treatment and referral cases, when the need arose and proper preventive measures that would enhance health status of the people.

    The coordinator further said that NYSC had impacted positively on people of the state through Community Development Services ( CDS ), particularly in Education, Health and Environmental Sanitation.

    “It may interest you to note that at the moment, we have a total of 227 corps health personnel in the state with 88 Doctors and 27 Pharmacists.

    ‘’In addition to other logistics, we sensitised and prepared 15 Doctors, 10 Pharmacists, eight Medical Lab, two Optometrist, five Nurses and 15 other Para-medical personnel for this programme in the first quarter of 2018”.

    In her remarks, the Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Hafsat Ganduje, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Yardada Maikano, expressed her commitment in supporting the scheme’s health initiative.

    She commended NYSC, saying that the initiative was a welcome development that would assist the rural dwellers who could not afford to pay medical bill in the hospital.

    According to her, such gesture is worthy of emulation by wealthy individuals and private organisations.

    Responding on behalf of the community, the Village Head of Rugar Duka, Malam Abubakar Lamido, called for such programme, on a regularly basis, to reduce health challenges in the community.

    No clash between Corps members and Soldiers in Kano – Coordinator

    Alhaji Ladan Baba, the Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) in Kano has debunked media reports that there was a clash between soldiers and some corps members in the orientation camp at Karaye Local Government Area of the state.

    A statement by Aliyu Ahmed,the NYSC public relations officer and made available on Sunday in Kano denied the report.

    According to the Coordinator, there was also no any clash between the military, Paramilitary and the corps members as reported.

    “The attention of the Management of the NYSC has been drawn to news reports of skirmishes between a group of Corps members and the Camp Commandant, Capt. Anyaegbunan during the ongoing 2017 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course at Karaye.

    “We wish to state for the records that the face-off started as a result of actions taken by a group of Corps members in solidarity with their colleagues who were being punished while loitering within the Camp Premises as social activity was going on.

    “The chanting of solidarity songs by the Corps members was an effort to get the erring Corps member released from the Camp Commandant which later ignited a rowdy session”, he said.

    The Coordinator added that the situation was immediately brought under control after he addressed the Corps members on the issue.

    “I promised to interface with the Camp Commandant to ensure that punishment and reward for Corps members are handled in line with the provision of the NYSC Bye law”.

    He reminded the Corps members of the need to adhere to the channel of communication in the Camp and assured them that NYSC Management would continue to implement policies and programmes that will enhance the welfare and security of Corps members in the Camp and during the service year.

    The Coordinator also drew the attention of all media organizations on the need to also adhere to their age-long tradition of balance and objectivity in news reporting.

    He further urged them to always verify their sources of news and to report objectively, saying normalcy has since returned to the Camp as all scheduled activities were on going without hindrance.

    The NYSC Coordinator also called on the public to always ignore such unbalanced reports so as to maintain the existing peace and unity among the corps members and the country at large.

    Kano pledges to upgrade NYSC orientation camp in Karaye

    The Kano State Government  has pledged to upgrade the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp located in Karaye Local Government Area of the state.

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made the pledge during the closing ceremony of a three-week orientation for the Batch ‘A’ stream II at Kusalla town on Monday.

    Ganduje, who was represented by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, Comrade Mohammed Garba, particularly said the government would increase the accommodation capacity of the camp from 2,500 to 5,000.

    “The state government has awarded contracts for upgrade of all the facilities in the camp and the renovation of both the male and the female hostels,’’ he said.

    He assured all the corps members of their security and appealed to them to cooperate with their host communities.

    “Government has resuscitated and increased the State-Allowances to N5,000 monthly in government agencies, parastatals, and in the 44 Local Government Areas,’’ he added.

    The governor enjoined the corps members to be patriotic and to render selfless service to the communities where they would be posted to on primary assignment.

    He said the government placed high premium on them as change agents and as drivers of the state’s development policies.

    Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Kano, Alhaji Ladan Baba, had applauded the state government for agreeing to upgrade the camp.

    According to him, the camp, the camp has facilities and land vast enough to accommodate more than 5, 000 persons.

    He advised the corps members to contribute their quota towards the development of the state by initiating projects that could impact positively on the lives of people in their host communities.

    Baba further urged them to shun all forms of acts capable of jeopardising the harmonious relationship between them and their host communities.
