  • ‘I never expected what I met in LAUTECH’

Registrar of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Dr Kayode Akindele Ogunleye, has said he never expected the level of development he met in the university on assuming duty as the chief Administrative Officer in February.

He said the level of infrastructural and innovative developments surprised him, because he never expected they could be so pronounced.

Ogunleye said the picture painted by the university, which has been engulfed in ownership and funding crisis for years, was not as bad as the reality on ground.

“When I was initially appointed as LAUTECH Registrar and I went to the meeting of Registrars of Nigerian Universities, my colleagues were asking funny questions like if l knew what l was venturing into.

“However, I made them to know that there was more of negative news about the university than positive and that their insinuation was wrong,” he said.

Ogunleye, who until his appointment as Bowen Registrar in 2014 was a Deputy Registrar in LAUTECH,,  added that he could remember that he did not want to apply when he saw the advertisement because, he was also affected by the negative news about the institution.

He added that he eventually put in his application due to the words of encouragement he received from the Vice-Chancellor of Bowen University, Prof Joshua Ogunwole.

“I did not want to apply because the negative news affected everybody and I said I would not apply. However, when I told the VC of Bowen, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, he said: ‘Kayode, you must go. Go and do the interview. You know when it comes to technology, we respect that university. A lot of us know that university has potential. You must go. You have something to do there.’”

The Ogbomoso-born registrar said recently, some influential people he least expected  called him, saying they wanted to bring their children to the university, requesting for assistance with admission.

He said the large number of candidates, who chose LAUTECH as their first and second choices in the on-going admission for the 2019/2020 academic session and wrote the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) recently conducted by the university, was a good testimony that the dark days were over in the  university.

Ogunleye further disclosed that, even in terms of academic calendar, LAUTECH is well above majority of renowned universities in the country, noting that the 2018/2019 academic session would be rounded off before the end of September.

The Registrar lauded the proactive measures of the two-owner state governments of Oyo and Osun, which he said had really doused tension in the institution.

He noted that the dream of the university under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor M. O. Ologunde, is to transform it to a laudable standard.

  • LAUTECH to assist NDLEA combat abuse of drugs

The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has offered to join the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in its fight against drug abuse, especially among youths.

LAUTECH’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Michael Ologunde, made the promise while hosting the agency’s Area Commander in Ogbomoso, Mr, Aminu Yusuff Ahmed, and his team.

Ologunde said the nation could no longer continue to watch the future of its youths get destroyed by drug abuse.

Promising to support the NDLEA and the Drug Free Club of the university to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse on their careers, The vice-chancellor said LAUTECH would henceforth make it mandatory for intending leaders of the students’ union to undergo drug tests before they are certified qualified to contest for various positions.

Ahmed told the vice-chancellor about the high prevalence of drug abuse in Oyo State and Ogbomoso.

He said students were responsible for the high figures the agency was contending with.

“We will appreciate your making use of our counselling and rehabilitation centres as a means of recovering anybody arrested from the path of peril,” Ahmed said.

  • Oyetola, Omisore, others pledge to solve LAUTECH crisis

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Alh. Gboyega Oyetola, Friday pledged to sustain the commitment of the state to the jointly owned Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.

He also said a vote for him will translate to sustenance of the achievements of the outgoing governor, Rauf Aregbesola.

The APC candidate said this during the first live debate by four of the leading candidates in the September 22 governorship election in Osogbo, the state capital.

The governorship hopefuls slugged it out at the debate organized by the Yoruba service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) at the Osogbo campus of Osun State University.

Only four candidates participated in the debate. They are Oyetola (APC), Sen. Iyiola Omisore (Social Democratic Party, SDP), Moshood Adeoti (African Democratic Party, ADP), and Fatai Akinbade of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Sen. Nurudeen Adeleke, was absent.

The five are the leading candidates in the election.

When asked how he planned to address the LAUTECH problem, Oyetola said the state was performing its obligations to the institution, recalling that it recently released N1 billion to the university as part of the state’s obligation.

He promised to sustain the culture of meeting Osun State’s obligation if elected.

Omisore said he would facilitate a round table with the Oyo State Government and the management of the institution to take decisions on the way forward. He said he would not just lead Osun State out of the university but ensure that all thorny issues are addressed properly to allow the institution function maximally. Pulling out of joint ownership of LAUTECH would only be the last resort, he said. The institution is jointly owned by Osun and Oyo states.

Oyetola said the state needs continuity of Aregbesola’s legacies to be able to replicate the Lagos example of development in Osun.

In his own contributions, Adeoti promised to introduce incentives to attract teachers to rural areas. This, he said, would address migration of teachers from rural to urban areas which leaves rural schools struggling.

To encourage transparency and prevent corruption, Akinbade promised to introduce due process in government dealings.

All of them promised to clear salary arrears of workers if voted on September, 22.

  • Osogbo, Iwo residents hail Oyetola as 160 enjoy free surgery

Several residents of Osogbo and Iwo on Wednesday commended the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 22 governorship election in Osun State, Alh. Gboyega Oyetola, after benefitting from his free surgery project.

Over 160 patients had lumps removed from various parts of their bodies and cataract from their eyes in the two cities since Monday. The patients were treated under the Ilerioluwa Free Health Mission which was brought to the state by Oyetola. His campaign is themed: Ilerioluwa.

While 100 patients were operated upon at the General Hospital, Iwo Wednesday, over 60 patients have had cataract removed from their eyes at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Osogbo since Monday. They are part of the over 10,000 people that have been treated free under the project.

At Iwo on Wednesday, the beneficiaries showered praises on Oyetola for coming to their aid at a time they have lost the hope over their ill-health. One of them, Mrs Risikat Amoo, who had a lump removed from her breast, showered praises on the APC candidate for rescuing her from the dangerous health condition.

According to her, she had been living with the lump for years due to inability to raise the funds for the treatment. She said her entire household would be eternally grateful to Oyetola and members of the medical team for bringing smiles to their faces again in Iwo.

At the teaching hospital in Osogbo, over 20 people have had free cataract surgery daily, restoring their original sight.

“It has been a fantastic experience so far. People are responding with great enthusiasm. They are also so appreciative of our work. When we see the joy on their faces after the surgery, we cannot but be happy for being part of this project that is impacting positively on the poor people in the society. It is the reason some other medical professionals have joined us willingly.” Adekunle said.

The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, who also visited the team at the hospital in Iwo, expressed gratitude to the medics on behalf of the APC candidate. He said the charity efforts were well recognized.

The surgery team moves to Ikire on Thursday for continuation of free surgery.

  • ASUU raises alarm of LAUTECH facing imminent collapse

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised an alarm over imminent collapse of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.

The union accused the two-owner state, Oyo and Osun, of not funding the university.

At a press conference in Osogbo, Osun State capital, the Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zone of ASUU, Dr. Ade Adejumo, if the university would not cease to exist urgent and serious steps must be taken to rescue the institution.

Expressing sadness over inadequate funding of the university by the two states, he lamented that the action of the Oyo and Osun governments has showed that they want the management of the institution to source for fund to run the institution.

He maintained that increasing tuition fee will definitely force poor students out of the school and the implication is that they would be forced into prostitution, armed robbery and other crimes.

He said: “We are currently on two weeks warning strike. We are calling attention to the fact that LAUTECH is on the brink of final disintegration.

“We are not so much concerned about almost 10 months arrears, promotion arrears, we are concerned about non-funding of the University. It is no longer inadequate funding, it is non-funding.”

The union leader, who noted that the Memorandum of Action (MoA) the two owner states signed before the union’s last strike was called off has not been respected by the government.

He alleged that the governors of the two states have turned their back on the university

According to the union “Many lecturers have left while many have retired. And there has not been replacement for those who have left, therefore, making the institution understaffed.

“So, we are calling on the governors of Oyo and Osun to let the general public know if they are tired and could no longer fund the university. The two governors are encouraging criminalities by insisting that they survive on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“They should come out and disclose their plans for LAUTECH. If they want to liquidate the university they should be bold enough to tell the whole world that they want to do so.”

  • Leaked memo exposes LAUTECH’s plan to hike fees

A leaked memo signed by the Acting Bursar of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has unveiled the school plans to increase the  fees from 100-Level to 400-Level starting from next session.

According to the memo, the decision to increase the fees emanated at the 133rd governing council meeting held on July 5. CAMPUSLIFE learnt that the Acting Bursar, J.A. Agboola, passed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Sulaiman Gbadegesin, on the instruction of registrar.

According to the document obtained by CAMPUSLIFE, the new fee regime will take effect in 2018/2019 session. Students who are indigene of Osun and Oyo states pay N65,000, while and non-indigene pay N72,000.

Going by the memo, students studying medical, nursing and biomedical courses will pay N300,000; their counterparts in Engineering and Technology will pay N250,000, while Agricultural, Basic Sciences, Environmental, Pure and Applied Sciences students will pay N200,000.

The council said the need for review the fee upward was in response to the financial challenges the school is facing.

Students have rejected the move by the school to increase the fee. A student, who simply gave his name as Olawale, said the memo would cause tension in the school. He described the council’s move as insensitive, wondering why the management contemplated the fee increase, given the economic situation in the country.

Another student, who gave her name as Rachael, said it was a pity the school planned to increase fees when governments of Osun and Oyo states owed civil servants salaries.

The Dean of Division of Students Affairs urged for calmness, calling on students not to cause tension before the planned hike is officially announced.

  • Yuletide: Omisore hosts widows, pensioners, others

Yuletide: Omisore hosts widows, pensioners, others

The former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore (Phd) FNSE, CON, has demonstrated his kindness and love to humanity by lifting retirees, pensioners and widows in Osun State.

Senator Omisore at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat, at Ogo Oluwa, Gbongan-Osogbo Road, Oshogbo on 31st December 2017, celebrated the end of the year’s get together with this group of hapless indigenes of Osun by distributing clothing materials and food items to them.

Omisore condemned a situation where someone would have worked actively for the government for over 35 years and be neglected after retirement by a ‘callous government’ who refused to pay them their retirement benefits for over 12 months.

The former Deputy Governor enumerated that the main reason for providing this succour is to wipe away their tears during the yuletide festive season. “It is our responsibility to bring joy to the less privileged and make them realise that their cry could still be heard in the state by people like us”.

Senator Omisore in his speech emphasised the importance of giving, adding that giving to the needy should not be the job of the rich alone but a task for everyone who has the means in the society.

He informed the people that his foundation has been giving to the needy for over 15 years and that he belonged to other global philanthropic organisations that give to the poor around the world.

Omisore“Such institution includes the “I Will Give” programme which was initiated to help your neighbour in any way you can. I WILL GIVE is an innovative platform to expand domestic financing from organised philanthropy, community giving and corporate social responsibility. If I could join such organisations to help people in other communities across West Africa, why should I not bring such help to my own people?,” Omisore explained.

He revealed that his yearly giving programme at Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Complex, (OAUTHC) marks 15 years this year. He used the initiative to bring joy to the hearts of the patients on January 1st every year, in order to wipe away their tears and give them hope.

Speaking further, Omisore announced that the idea of giving to the pensioners, retirees, and widows in the State would become a weekly or monthly program. He implored other guests at the occasion to also give to widows and the needy in their communities, towns, or wards. He prayed that next year’s programme would be done at the government’s house where it would be like a home for everyone.

The Chairman PDP Caretaker Committee and former member of the House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon. Ismaila Kolawole who was at the event to support Senator Omisore declared that the occasion was to bring joy to the heart of the retirees, pensioners, and widows who have been rendered powerless in the society making them realise that they still have a place in the society. He emphasised the necessity of showing love to people and assured them of a better life in 2018.

Another guest at the event, Engr, Alhj Ishola Awotorebo, a former Minister for Water Resources, commended Senator Iyiola Omisore for his good work and prayed that God will always uplift him. He condemned the APC’s administration in the state that has caused a lot of damage to the masses including the less privileged in the society. Awotorebo enumerated various failures of the APC leadership to include unbridled fuel price increase in 2015 to the current scarcity of the essential commodity and the hyperinflation that are now making poor Nigerians to weep secretly. He said a change must come to the state by September 2018..

Former member House of Rep and former chairman, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Dr. Muyiwa Oladimeji who was a former chieftain of the APC in the State, revealed that after studying Omisore’s philanthropic gesture, he and his members in the Lions Club International had to recommend Senator Omisore for the globally renowned  “Melvin Jones Fellow Award’’ — the highest award category in honours list of Lions Club International in 2014. This award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism.  The recipient of this award becomes a model of exemplary service to his club and the community which it serves. Dr Iyiola Omisore was giving this prestigious award in 2014 at a global forum.

Other people present at the occasion were PDP Women leader in Osun State, Mrs Comfort Ale; Legal Adviser to PDP in the South West, Barrister Ojo Williams; Former National Deputy Vice Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo; and a party chieftain, Dr. Bayo Faforiji. Also, some association of widows present to receive 50kg bags of rice and other food materials include: Mercy of God Widows Association, Itesiwaju Widows Association Ilesa West; Alubarika Widows Association, Olorunda; Daughters of Zion; Isokan Widows Association, Oredegbe Widows Association and Uncommon Favour Widows Association, Ife North.

  • LAUTECH, the crisis and the unanswered questions

LAUTECH, the crisis and the unanswered questions

A parent whose child is 25 years old is supposed to be at peace after all, it is the blooming period of that child. The time to expand and reproduce.

However, in the case where the child has been deprived of certain life teachings and brain nutrients, the parent would go bankrupt trying to right the wrongs such child would cause them. But if the parents of the child fails in their responsibility towards the child at one time or the other, the consequences will undesirable.

Such is the case of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology ( LAUTECH ), a 25-year old institution that has been malnourished by her parents; Oyo and Osun states. Thus in recent time, the university is only growing in age but not in expectation! This not because the university is lacking in qualified, able and willing academic and non academic staff, nor because the student are not serious on their academic responsibilities but rather because the parents of the institution, Oyo and Osun states have ignored the institution.

It was learnt that at present, the governments of the two states is owing the university subvention for about twenty two months. This is billions of naira. It is true that an old giant rat will feed on the breast milk of its grown kid.

However, if the mindset of the giant rat is only to feed on its kid’s but refuse to nurture the kid to maturity, I doubt it if it (the giant rat) will not be blamed. LAUTECH has reached the age when thumb-sucking is no longer a pardonable offense but unfortunately, the institution is bereft of adequate “parental care”. Who then is to blame? You and I know the answer.

A university of technology managed by two states whose mantra “upholding the Awolowo’s legacy” never seem to run out, is suffering hiccups and starvation, enough to have caused breakdown in the activities of the institution.

The case, later turned crisis which presented itself as a tug of war between the managing states and the striking unions has now turned to into a wicked abandonment of the masses as not only the aforementioned parties are affected.

The students have not only suffered, parents and active participants of democracy have had their hopes dashed over and over again. The students did all they could – organized protests that caught the media attention, even had a dialogue with the Senate President of the country , who, as expected, made promises that the matter would be resolved soon.

Yet, the owner states claim nothing would be done unless an audit report was submitted. Some even opined that accounts audit cannot happen unless the industrial action is called off. They (Owner states) even set up white paper and technical committees both of which had their reports submitted on how to save the institution without having to go through hiccups as it is now.

One had even hoped after that after the reports, the dear 25-year old would be cured forever. However, the matter only ended with the report’s submission.

The state governments won’t give in and the unions, refuse to the Yoruba proverbial donkey who would work incessantly without pay.

In a bid to kill the conflagration and save the grasses from the elephants at logger heads, a faction of the school’s alumni association started to ‘look for money’ to pay the lecturers.  They had a target – to raise N1bn in 90 days. They started ‘begging’ around to save the dying university by all means. how sad!

Recently, the governing council of LAUTECH announced that the school shall be reopened and that activities shall commence on the 25th of September, 2017, the announcer stated that the state governments had sorted out funds for six months of the salary owed. In swift response, the unionists claim that they weren’t aware of the resumption and that their strike subsists unless their prayers are answered.

Questions would then begin to fill a curious mind: was the proposed six months salary bailout supposed to buy us time before another strike action? What happens to the report arrived at by the visitation panel led by Wole Olanipekun (CFR), are there plans to implement these suggestions at all?

The case of neglect by the owner states cannot be overemphasized. Save the TetFUND, NEEDS assessment, the donated and inherited buildings, one cannot point to one project accomplished by these governors.

Is the bailout another way to sweep the plans for sustainability of LAUTECH under the carpet? Or abandon the institution completely? After all, the Oyo government has just fathered a new child, TechU and Uniosun has grown a great deal.

What power does the National Universities Commission have in times like this? Only to ‘regulate’ the activities of universities?

Have the NUC no power at all?

Dr Saraki’s meeting with the students’ representatives is still very fresh in our memories, his assurances are too. Are there no plans to fulfill them?

The KPMG audit report and the technical committee’s report are there no plans to lay the actual stance of the university before the public?

If these issues are not well addressed, one may begin to wonder if the resumption announced by the governing council is worth the hype after all; and if we would not go back to where the issue all began.
