Ooni: Lafogido ruling house stakes claim

The Lafogido Ruling House has described the recognition of the Giesi Royal Family House as the ruling house to produce the next Ooni of Ife, by Osun State Government and Ife kingmakers,  as unfair. Insisting that it was its turn to produce the next Ooni, ‎the family said it is wrong for the state government and kingmakers to declare Giesi as the only ruling house that is qualified to present candidates for the exalted stool.

Addressing journalists in Ile-Ife, the head of Lafogido Ruling House, Sooko Adeleke Adewoyin, accused the state government and kingmakers of ignoring the report of the 1992 Justice Bolarinwa Babalakin Panel of Inquiry into the Ife Chieftaincy. Adewoyin also disclosed that the Lafogido Ruling House has instituted a legal action to stop the selection process pending the determination of the case in the court.

Adewoyin said that Lafogido reigned last as Ooni of Ife in 1930. He lamented that efforts of the Lafogido ruling house in the past to allow the state government and other stakeholders to correct the injustice to the ruling house had been futile.

“In 1992 we made an attempt to call on the government to re-arrange and address the lopsidedness in the ascendancy to the throne of Ooni. Justice Babalakin in his recommendations on the review put it down black and white. He noted that there was conflicting information about the historical background of Lajamisan, that the best thing the government should do is to call all the ruling houses together and address the matter,” he said.

Speaking further, he quoted the recommendation which read in part: “In view of all the researches that have been carried out in the Ife history, when the first declaration on the stool of Ooni was made, there would appear to be an urgent need for all the ruling houses in Ife to meet, discuss and agree on the number of Lajamisan’s children, the outcome of their meeting will dictate weather or not there is a necessity to amend the present Ooni of Ife chieftaincy declaration, the commission therefore recommend to the state government to cause this to be done. That is a document already with the government since 1992, after the 1980 which they are now relying on.

“The Attorney General of the state at that time is still alive and he is Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, now the Asiwaju of Igbajo during the administration of Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke government. He will answer the question of what we have been doing since 1980 because the 1980 edict was hurriedly carried out after the 1976 when an Oba got to the throne. How then can we now rely on the 1980 declaration that has been discredited in 1992 by Justice Babalakin Commission of Inquiry?”

Adewoyin expressed the fear that Lafogido Ruling House might go into extinction if it allows the injustice against it persist. He said they the Lafogido would continue to sensitise the public about the injustice in the interest of the people of Ife and Yoruba, lamenting that the wrong person should not be allowed to occupy the exalted Ooni stool.

Why we’re in court, by Lafogido house

The Lafogido ruling house of Ile-Ife has explained why it is seeking legal redress against the decision of the Osun State government and the Ife kingmakers to limit the contest for the Ooni to the Giesi ruling house.

In a telephone interview, the head of the ruling house, Sookoo Adeleke Adewoyin, said the process being used was alien to Lafogido and the town.

The former deputy governor said Lafogido was not expecting any challenge to produce the Ooni.

Adewoyin, who described the 1980 declaration as a fraud and completely alien to Ife customs and tradition, called for immediate review of the declaration.

He said the call for review became imperative because the ruling house has since been marginalised in all the chieftaincy reviews in Ile-Ife.

One of the royal families that make up the Giesi ruling house, billed to produce the Ooni of Ife, the Agbedegbede II royal family has dissociated itself from some selection committees.

It said it would use legal means to ensure that the selection  is just, fair and transparent.

In a statement by Prince Tilewa Adewole, the family expressed dissatisfaction with the way and manner some members of the  committee are trying to edge out some candidates, who they see as a threat to their preferred candidate.

The family insisted on their choice of Prince Ramon Adegoke Adedoyin, “a bonafide son of the Agbedegbede royal family II” as its sole candidate.

It restated its resolve to ensure that it is the turn of the Giesi ruling House to fill the stool but advocated that the best way to achieve this is for the committee to allow each family to produce a candidate.

The family warned that any deviation from a just and fair selection may lead to a scuttle of the nomination.

  • Lafogido Ruling House urges review of contestants’ lineage

As the selection process of the Ooni starts, the Lafogido Ruling House has faulted the Chieftaincy Declaration of 1976 by the Justice Ademola Commission, claiming it erred in its conclusion on issues regarding the true royal families.

The declaration, which was a review of the 1957 declaration, was gazetted in 1977 by the government of the old Oyo State.

In a statement by the Head of the ruling house and Sooko Walomo of Ife, Prince Adeleke Adewoyin, the family faulted the commission’s position, saying its members tried to twist the history of the ancient kingdom.

The house, Adewoyin said, was marginalised in the chieftaincy reviews since the reign of Ooni Lajamisan.

According to him, the rotational system was introduced during the reign of Ooni Lajemisan, who, he said, had two children – Lajodogun and Lafigido.

Adewoyin said: “The Lajodogun Ruling House was further split into Ogbooru, Osinkola and Princess Moropo, who had a son named Giesi. Despite that Lafogido had eight children, the family remains an entity.”

  • ‘It’s Lafogido’s turn to produce Ooni’

The Lafogido ruling house of Ile-Ife has said it was its turn to produce the next Ooni.

Following the transition of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, 35 candidates from the four ruling houses of Osinkola, Giesi, Ogbooru and Lafogido have signified their intention to occupy the stool.

The Lafogido house of the Lajamisan dynasty has cried out over an alleged marginalisation.

Addressing a news conference, the leader of the house, Sooko Adeleke Adewoyin, said the house had produced only one Ooni in the history of Ile-Ife.

He lamented that a particular dynasty had produced not fewer than eight and held unto the stool since 100 years ago.

According to him, the Lafogido house had been marginalised.

Adewoyin said the house should produce the next Ooni for the sake of equity, adding that it had many qualified candidates.
