    Tinubu, Shettima, Akpabio, others pay farewell respects to Lagbaja

    President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday, paid their last respects to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5 at the age of 56.

    Other dignitaries in attendance included the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, ministers, governors, serving and former service chiefs, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

    The final interment of the late army chief began on Thursday with a service of songs, followed by a funeral service on Friday morning at the National Christian Centre in Abuja.

    The body of Lagbaja arrived at the National Military cemetery at 3:15 p.m., accompanied by full military honours, before the burial ceremony commenced in accordance with military tradition.

    The pallbearers and firing party took their positions, and the pallbearers marched with the casket through the firing party before the last post was performed.

    The burial oration was read by the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede.

    Lagbaja: PAP boss condoles with Tinubu, Ribadu, minister, others

    The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr Dennis Otuaro, has commiserated with President Bola Tinubu on the demise of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja

    Otuaro also condoled with the Office of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; and the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, over the loss.

    The PAP boss, in a statement signed by his special assistant on media, Igoniko Oduma, described Lagbaja’s passing as “a tremendous loss to the Nigerian Army, the nation and the global community.”

    Expressing sadness over the loss, Otuaro said that he had the privilege to witness the departed General’s unwavering commitment to the security and stability of the country.

    He said: “General Lagbaja’s selfless service and leadership played a significant role in shaping the Nigerian Army into the esteemed institution it is today.

    “His legacy extends beyond his impressive military career. He was a dedicated patriot who worked tirelessly to promote peace and unity in Nigeria.”

    Otuaro noted that the former Chief of Army Staff was very supportive of the PAP, stressing that his contributions to the programme would always be remembered and cherished.

    He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the late Lagbaja’s family, friends, and colleagues and urged them to find solace in the knowledge that the late General’s remarkable life and service would never be forgotten.

    JUST IN: Lagbaja’s remains arrive Abuja military cemetery

    The remains of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has just arrived at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

    The body, which arrived at exactly 3:00 p.m., was brought in an ambulance. 

    According to military traditions, the arrival of the remains signals the commencement of the burial ceremony for the late COAS. 

    After this, the casket will be set by the pallbearers, and a minute of silence will be observed by everyone present at the event.

    Following this, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Minister of Defence, and the President will give their remarks. 

    The national flag will be presented to the next of kin, and the casket will then be lowered. Following this, the President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and other dignitaries will lay wreaths in honor of Lt. Gen. Lagbaja.

    Lagbaja, who was appointed by the President on June 19, 2023, with other Service Chiefs, died on November 5, 2024.
