  • Oshodi and the Lagos megacity blaze

Oshodi and the Lagos megacity blaze

For a first time visitor to Lagos, particularly Oshodi in the recent times, the place is a sight to behold and a whole construction site of an emerging mega business and commercial centre. Night and day are almost now same; the street lights never fail and activities are round the clock

The once infamous slum greatly feared and loathed for its high level of criminality and scoundrels has become the epicenter of the Lagos megacity initiative.

Just over a decade before now, going through the place was a nightmare. Movement for vehicles and commuters on the ever busy Agege Motor Road, a well paved expressway, was near impossible; the human traffic hardly had space to walk on, vehicles were holed up in traffic for as long as it takes traders to close shops as street traders occupied every each of the road.

It was same for the Gbagada, Oshodi, Murtala Muhammed and Apapa Expressway, which equally passes through the area. Oshodi was a heaven for street urchins, pick pockets, day light robbers and drug peddlers. The miscreants do their drug and freely smoke cannabis unchallenged, puffing smoke into the air amidst the hustling and bustling centre in a no man’s land Oshodi became.

The place was a dread, boys and girls, carrying bloodshot eyes, who no doubt abandoned their homes from across the nation, hibernated under the Oshodi bride, smoking, drinking and engaging in sodomy from nightfall. The miscreants totally lost their minds, they copulated freely   before traders and passersby, Oshodi turned a centre, producing social miscreants, drug addicts, touts, thugs of all sorts and social misfits.

Going through there at day or night was dreaded, yet, it undoubtedly remains the centre of Lagos, the nation’s economic engine room. All routes into and out of Lagos converge on Oshodi, The major roads in and out of the nation’s gateways, the Apapa seaports of Tincan Island and Wharf and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) go through Oshodi. The same for going from Lagos by road to any of the neighbouring West African countries or coming in.

Oshodi needed to be reclaimed from the vultures and marauders, exactly what the State Government is doing now in the pursuit of the megacity goal even though it is taking a toll on the ways and life of the people.  Until recently, the people enjoyed wild parties; celebrations and their countless festivals all year round. Roads were closed and every each of space occupied for feasting, drinking and winning; but that is not anymore. The government has long put a lid on that and not even such public places as schools are permitted anymore to host parties and public celebrations of any sort.

The people are the worse for it, the cost of the proliferating private event centres from this policy have become highly prohibitive and far beyond the people. Parties and celebrations have literarily gone on hold and with complaints about all of that almost going cacophonous, community leaders in the area under the umbrella of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area recently took the decision to embark on a fund drive to complete the community hall project it began some years back and make it available to the people.

Started over a decade ago with the support of Oshodi/Isolo Local Government, which as well   provided them with the space within the council secretariat, paucity of funds has stalled it at the level it has remained since then.  To overcome this, the community has mobilized all business houses, including banks, hotels, hospitals, filling stations, celebrities, politicians and public office holders of  its localities of Oshodi, Shogunle and Mafoluku for a N50 million fund raiser on Thursday, November 16, 2017 under the chairmanship of Senator Olamilekan Solomon Adeola aka Yayi, representing Lagos West Senatorial District.

Scheduled to hold at the Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji Legislative Council Hall in the Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Secretariat, two prominent residents of the community, Alhaji Abdul Razaq Sanni aka Provida and Alhaji Soliu Ibrahim aka Too Much Money  will lead the pack of the fund  launchers as chief launchers while the Lagos State Commissioner  for Local Government and Community Affairs, Alhaji Muslim Folami will be Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony in which a number of frontline residents of proven contribution to the development of the community will be honoured.  The Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Idris Bolaji Muse-Ariyoh is the Chief Host while the Elewu of Ewuland, Oba Shakiru Adeshina Kuti will be on hand as Royal Father of the Day.

For the people of Oshodi, this is an opportunity to realise their dream of a common meeting house that would once again enable them to resonate their age-long cultural and traditional festivities and free celebrations in a way that would not offend the now emerging megacity status of Lagos.

  • Why we chose Agege Stadium for continental matches – MFM Director

Why we chose Agege Stadium for continental matches – MFM Director

The Director of MFM FC of Lagos, Emmanuel Adeyemi on Monday said that the club chose to play its continental matches at Agege Stadium because it has a “fortress” of fans  no team will survive.

Adeyemi said in an interview  that though the club could play its matches anywhere in Lagos, it remained in Agege to maintain its affinity with their supporters.

“MFM FC can play anywhere in Lagos, it’s just that this is our home ground and this is where we have our fans and we are also used to the facility here.

“Agege fans have been of great support to the team, we want them to enjoy our playing in the continent here, but that does not mean we cannot play anywhere else.

“We are thankful to the Lagos State government for their tremendous support in making this place ready. The support has been so great; Agege remains a fortress,’’ he said.

Adeyemi expressed optimism that CAF would certify the stadium for the continental campaign.

“ I am confident that Agege will get CAF’s approval for our continental campaign, the Lagos State government has committed large sum for its remodelling.

“ With the kind of passion shown to MFM by Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, we are left with little to do, just to get our players ready.

“For this competition, we are not only representing Lagos State, but we will be flying the national flag.

“The state government has done everything possible in making sure that Agege Stadium gets CAF approval by December, and we will take it up from there,” he said.

Adeyemi reporterd that the team would begin close camping as soon as it completes ongoing recruitment of new players.

“Immediately after we must have done with getting new signings, we will go into closed camping. The coaches and the technical crew have submitted their list and we are looking into it.

“We will strengthen all the departments from defence to the midfield and strikers; we want to add to our pool of talented players.

“For us in MFM, we believe in excellence and we want to effectively represent Lagos and Nigeria at the CAF Champions League, so all hands are on deck.

“We aim to make MFM the toast of many as far as football club is concerned.

“So we are ready to surpass the targets of people with the level of support we have received from the Lagos State Governor,’’the director added.

In the same vein, Sola Coker, a board member of the Lagos State Football Association, (LSFA) said that MFM would get all the support needed from the body.

“We are ready to support MFM to any length. We are happy that Lagos is back on the continent after 16 years in the doldrums.

“We are glad that Ambode gave his support for Agege Stadium to meet CAF’s standard, it’s such a huge investment and a positive development.

“We have worked hard for this since about six years ago during the emergence of MFM till now and we can only hope for the better,’’ the LSFA board member said.

  • Lagos to shut tax defaulting firms

Lagos to shut tax defaulting firms

Tax defaulting firms are to be shut down by the Lagos State Government from today Commissioner for Finance Akinyemi Ashade, said yesterday.

He said some banks had failed to remit statutory taxes, including withholding taxes on banks’ interests for more than 10 years.

Ashade said the government had resolved to resort to all lawful means to ensure compliance with statutory tax remittances.

“Any company found to have evaded tax will not be spared.

“It is in the interest of defaulting companies and their management to remit the statutory taxes to the state within the grace period to avoid embarrassment to them and their shareholders.

“All law abiding corporate organisations are advised to adhere to this directive as the state government has given enough grace period for them to remit their taxes.

“The government will on Monday, November 20, commence the process of shutting down the headquarters of corporate organisations, including banks that have failed to remit statutory taxes to government coffers,’’ Ashade said in a statement.

He said prompt payment of taxes would enable the government to provide the necessary infrastructure and improve the standard of living of the people.

“When people pay their taxes promptly, government is encouraged to do more. The administration of Akinwunmi Ambode has shown in the last two and half years that taxes paid are judiciously spent on projects that have impacted positively on the lives of residents,’’ the statement said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the government had on November 7, lamented that only about 600,000 residents out of a population of over 22 million were up to date in terms of tax compliance.

The government, therefore, directed all its revenue agencies to ensure prompt payment of taxes, including land use charges and also commence enforcement of payment by all tax defaulters with immediate effect.

  • Lagos workers acquire skills for pension administration

Lagos workers acquire skills for pension administration

Governments and employers, who fail to accept the welfare of the people as the ultimate law, is at the risk of ruining its stewardships and the trust of the citizens in governance, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said.

He added that employers, who deny this run the undeniable risk of ruining their enterprise, the trust and the devotion of their employees.

The governor made this statements at the opening session of a workshop tagged: “Vital Interpersonal Skills for Pension Administrators”, organised by the Civil Service Pensions Office (CSPO) of the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions in Lagos.

Ambode, who was represented by Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson, said Lagos State government is one of the most notable governments that believe in this ideal, adding that the unrivalled dedication of the state to the welfare of its workforce both during and after service cannot be overemphasised.

The commissioner said Governor Ambode mandated his ministry to embark on a continuous training of members of staff of the ministry in order to ensure the delivery of top quality service to officers of the civil service.

The training, he said, was dedicated to the need to inculcate and sharpen the vital interpersonal skills that officers of the Civil Service Pensions Office require to properly serve pensioners and retirees of the state civil service.

He said: “In addition to fulfilling my duties charged with the responsibility for ensuring the adequate exposure of the civil service to knowledge on an on going basis, the activities that have been carried out signify and underscore the Governor’s commitment to all matters relating to the welfare of staff, retirees, and pensioners in Lagos State.

“In aiming to call attention to, and aid the development of, the vital interpersonal skills that are vital for pension administrators, our training will focus on the skills that are not learnt in schools, but are important though, rarely visible. These are the skills that are less tangible, harder to quantify, challenging to teach and, sometimes, difficult to describe. They include attributes such as etiquette, getting along with others, listening and engaging in small talk. Without doubt, these skills are related to the concept of ‘employability’, but they are also related to the concepts of effectiveness and efficiency.”

He continued:“Clearly, possessing the right attitude to work is a soft skill that is not taught in the universities and other formal schools. This is, therefore, an attempt to help officers of the Civil Service Pensions Office develop the skills that are necessary for success. The training will also fully assist the participating officers to appreciate and acquire the benefits that skills training brings to bear on the attainment of the strategic objectives of the government and the effectiveness of the institutions of the civil service. It will also help pension administrators in the CSPO benefit from having officers, who are able to make critical observations.”

The Lagos State Government, parents and medical experts yesterday joined forces to protect children living with disabilities.

They reached the consensus at the first ‘Stakeholders Summit on Disability’ organised by the office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Social Development.

The Summit, whose theme was ‘Ability in disability: a stitch in time saves nine’, was held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, represented by Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, said his administration had decided that all stakeholders must henceforth join hands to make life more meaningful for children living in disabilities.

The governor said early intervention of disability in the affected children would help in giving hope of a meaningful life to those children.

Thus, according to him, the concept of early intervention was targeted at parents and guardians of the children.

“Early detection and intervention of disabilities in children will afford you the opportunity to do what is needful medically. Since nothing can be done to change the circumstances of those children, you must show them the ability to support them in harnessing their potential,” he said.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Development, Mrs. Joyce Onafowokan, said the summit was inspired by Governor Ambode’s inaugural speech in which he promise that issues of disability will receive greater attention this year.
