    Lagos issues seven-day warning notice to Lekki illegal building owners

    Residents living along Orchid Road, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, and Oral Estate II, along the Ikota River, have received an evacuation order from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

    However, the state commissioner of environment, Tokun Wahab dismissed this notice in a statement posted on his official social media page on Monday, November 27.

    He wrote: “After the inspection tour of System 156 and 157 Channel yesterday, we have issued a seven-day contravention notice to owners of buildings lying within the seven metres drainage setback on Orchid Rd, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, Oral Estate II, all along the Ikota River.

    “We cannot keep lampooning the government for flooding when developers, builders & residents are the main cause of flooding; we shall continue to enforce because that is why laws are made. Without law and order, there cannot be development. Enough of this bad behaviour!

    “We also visited Chevron Drive, where a stop work order was issued to Gravitas Company and owners of Grace Ville Island & Pocket Island.

    “We urge Lagosians to respect the State Drainage Master Plan to avoid property demolition as there is no going back on the decision of the state to enforce the law and reclaim Drainage setbacks following the expiration of the notices issued.”

    Wahab urged residents of Lagos to adhere to the State Drainage Master Plan to prevent the demolition of properties.

    The Lagos Assembly has confirmed three of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s nominees of cabinet rank.

    The House confirmed Abiodun Ogunleye as commissioner, and approved two others as Special Advisers (cabinet ranks).

    Their confirmation took place during a plenary presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

    The nominees were confirmed after a unanimous voice vote by the lawmakers.

    We will resolve truck, cargo operators’ challenges in Lagos, says LASTOC

    Lagos State Truck and Cargo Operators Committee (LASTOC) has assured that it will resolve the long-standing difficulties facing truckers and cargo operators in the state.

    The chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, Lukumon Shittu, stated this on Monday, November 27, vowing to promote cooperation and cohesion among its members.

    He acknowledged the effort of the government and the shared dedication to improving the working conditions and productivity of truckers and cargo operators in the metropolis, adding that the recently established committee serves as proof to that effect.

    He said: “I thank the Lagos state government for bringing up this committee to solve the problem of truckers in the state.

    “I will try my best to end the suffering of truckers and Cargo Operators in Lagos State with the support of our elders, truckers, and members of the committee.”

    The spokesperson of the state’s Ministry of Transportation, Tiamiyu Oluwatosin, an assistant director, gave insight into the industry’s prolonged challenges.

    He noted the state government acknowledges the necessity for a resolution and highlighted that the formation of the committee was a calculated decision to effectively oversee trucking operations in tandem with the administration.

    He said: “We have been having a lingering crisis in this industry, and we felt that it is time to resolve all this and that was why the committee was set up to run the activities of trucks seamlessly with the Lagos state government.”

    The Nation reports that LASTOC is mandated to execute government directives for the facilitation of transportation business in the state as well as act as a conduit for communication between the state government and the maritime trucking industry.

    The committee was established to proactively address the menace of street urchins, popularly known as ‘area boys’, and to investigate the issues of multiple tickets being imposed on truckers by various road transport unions, local governments, and non-state actors.

    Lagos tops list of worst traffic cities in 2023

    Lagos State has ranked number one city with the worst road traffic in the Global Traffic Congestion Rankings 2023.

    The Global Traffic Congestion Rankings, which is carried out by Traffic Index, analyses traffic congestion across cities having at least 500K inhabitants around the world.

    Riga, the capital and the largest city of Latvia came second while Tehran, the capital and largest city of Iran was ranked third on the list.

    Mexico City in Mexico, Mumbai in India and Krakow in Poland all came fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

    Traffic index website is built on top of the traffic layer within Google Maps so as to monitor traffic as it happens around the world.

    Traffic congestion can be caused by key factors such as accidents, traffic overload, construction and even pedestrians crossing the road incorrectly or holding up vehicles. In developing countries, traffic congestion becomes worse due to bad roads, and poor connectivity among other factors.

    Lagos govt to traders: be fire conscious during Yuletide

    To prevent fire outbreaks during the Yuletide, Lagos State Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, in conjunction with the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) and Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, has launched a sensitisation programme at Balogun Market on Lagos Island, on ways to prevent fire outbreaks.

    In his address before the sensitisation tour of the market, the Director General of LSSC, Mr. Lanre Mojola, tutored people on basic precautionary measures to be put in place to avert fire outbreaks such as removal of combustible materials like paper, rubber and wood, avoid plugging of electrical iron and kettle, avoid keeping of inflammable materials inside the house, avoid refuelling of generators while working or still hot, avoid overloading of electrical circuits and use of camp gas or cylinder indoor, among others.

    He said in case traders discovered or suspected fire incident, they should raise the alarm, leave the building by the nearest available exit and call Lagos State emergency toll free lines on 767 or 112, among others.

    The Director, Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, Mrs. Adeseye Margaret, corroborated Mr Mojola’s statement. She said: “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu doesn’t want any of you to die; he wants you to live in healthy and good conditions.”

    Adeseye, represented by Mrs. Alelamole Abiola, advised traders to prevent fire at their markets by not overloading electrical sockets and avoid storing petrol at markets.

    Lagos gets acting CP Ayilara  

    DCP Waheed Ayilara has been unveiled as the Acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.  

    Ayilara, a former Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, (SCID), takes over from AIG Idowu Owohunwa.

    The Nation reports that Owohunwa was among the 12 Commissioners of Police approved for promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIG) by the Police Service Commission.

    DCP Ayilara in his charge to officers directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the state to sustain optimum security within their respective domains.

    He spoke while having a strategic meeting with the officers and other heads of department serving in the command in view of the forthcoming Yuletide.

    Ayilara was at a time the Commander of MOPOL 2 with headquarters in Keffi, Lagos. 

    He was also the Chief Superintendent of Police in charge of Administration, CSPA, Lagos Command. 

    In 2020, he was transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department, (FCID).

    The Mobile Advert Permit, a QR code secured by encryption, is set to revolutionize the registration process for branded vehicles in the state. This unique code, containing brand type, number plate, and permit year, ensures authenticity and compliance. Verification is streamlined through LASAA’s customized QR code scanner, available both online and offline.

    To further facilitate ease of doing business, LASAA has decentralized the registration process. Clients can now register their branded vehicles conveniently at any LASAA branch office across the state or online using the SAuto platform, bringing the service closer to their homes and offices.

    Lagos to support for vulnerable women

    The Lagos State government will expand its social safety net to especially provide more support for vulnerable women and families.

    Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Mrs. Cecilia Dada stated this at the 2023 interactive meeting with women- focused Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

    According to her, the government increased the cash grants to vulnerable persons from N20,000 to N50,000 because it is intentional about lifting residents, especially  women, out of poverty.

    Other areas where the government intends to help women, according to Mrs. Dada, include economic empowerment; education and skills development; health and reproductive rights; Gender-Based violence prevention and response; advocacy and policy reform; collaborations and partnerships, as well as data collection and analysis.

    The commissioner also described the interactive session as important to enable the NGOs network, get familiar with the ministry’s activities and key into same.

    She added: “This meeting is to bring us together to rub minds on issues pertaining to our progress and development as NGOs domiciled in Lagos State. Particularly, it serves as a testament to our collective commitment in creating a society where women have equal opportunities to thrive and succeed.

    “Gender equality is not just a women’s issue, it is a human rights issue that requires the engagement and involvement of all stakeholders. It is therefore motivating to see representatives from government agencies, civil society organisations, academia, and the private sector at this meeting. This diversity in perspectives and experiences will enrich our discussions and contribute to the formulation of effective strategies to address the challenges facing women in our society. This forum also gives us the opportunity to critically examine these challenges and develop practical solutions to promote gender equality and inclusive development as a holistic approach across Lagos State.

    “Women empowerment goes hand in hand with poverty alleviation. When women are given equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and decision-making positions, they not only improve their own lives, but also contribute significantly to the overall development of our communities and nation.”

    Director in charge of NGOs in the ministry, Mrs. Itunu Babarinde, described the interactive session as important towards achieving the ministry’s mandate because the NGOs complement its efforts. She said the meeting was targeted at over 300 NGOs.

    Representative of Centre for Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR), Oluwabukola Ajijola, said working with the ministry will benefit her organisation immensely. The NGO works with ex-female inmates by providing safe homes for them to be empowered and settled before finally reuniting with their families and the society at large.

    She said: “Our Ruby Safe House, launched two weeks ago, is for ex-female inmates after leaving the prison. They stay here and build their skills, capacity and get empowered the process, so that by the time they reconnect with their families and the society at large, they are already empowered and have the skill to survive independently. We hope the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation will look into this direction and strengthen our work there.”

    Meanwhile, over 4,500 students of the state’s 19 skills acquisition centres graduated yesterday. They were of the 2022 batch.

    Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged the graduands to believe in their abilities. He reiterated that his administration is committed to alleviating poverty, creating wealth, job opportunities and uplift Lagosians.

    The governor also said the training was a roadmap for graduands ‘to be the best in their chosen careers, learn from one another and be better entrepreneurs’.

    Mrs. Dada, who said the Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to women and youth empowerment, noted that since 2019, over 18,000 persons had benefited from the tuition-free training.

    Lagos impounds 15 tankers on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway

    Operatives of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Thursday, November 23, impounded fifteen tankers parked indiscriminately along 2nd Rainbow down to Mile 2 Bridge, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos.

    A statement by the director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the enforcement operations were carried out on the directives of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa.

    Some of the impounded tankers were apprehended inside Mile 2 Estates after investigations revealed that some of them now parked indiscriminately thereby causing serious traffic for motorists coming out from the estates.

    LASTMA Director of Operations Peter Gbejemede said the enforcement exercise was in accordance with the Law and would be continuous until zero tolerance is achieved on illegal/ indiscriminate parking across the State.

    The statement quoted Giwa as urging motorists to collaborate with the government by informing LASTMA of any broken down or abandoned trailer/truck.

    Oyo understudies Lagos’ tertiary education policy

    Oyo State government has hailed Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for initiating exceptional reforms and policies in the education sector, particularly tertiary education, which has repositioned the state to become a model for impactful, inclusive and innovative education.

    The Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Olusanjo Adeniyi, spoke during a recent working visit to the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, to understudy the government’s policies on tertiary education and other areas for a possible collaboration that can fast-track the growth of education in the state.

    Adeniyi, who led the Oyo State delegation, said they were in Lagos to tap from the government’s initiatives to maintain a high-quality education in their state.

    According to him, the team would also focus on measures to build conversations around leveraging on Information Communication Technology (ICT), to improve the teaching and learning process in Oyo State.

    He noted that while a whole ministry is dedicated to handling tertiary education matters in Lagos State, a department handles that in the Oyo State Ministry of Education.

    He said the state had a lot to learn from Lagos to drive ongoing reforms in the sector.

    Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education Tolani Sule stressed the need for continued collaborations and partnerships among governments in the Southwest to achieve goals of the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN).

    The commissioner stressed the need for more collaboration among governments in the Southwest, especially in education and economic integration, so that the region could continue to have the leading edge in sustainable development.

    He said: “The extent to which a group or an individual goes is the function of the level of education. All of us must collaborate and share our ideas to ensure that education continues to grow in our region.”

    The delegation was also at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.
