    One dead, three rescued as 40ft container crushes minibus in Lagos

    A tragic accident occurred early Sunday along Old Ipaja road by Agbotikuyo, where a 40-foot container-laden truck crushed a commercial minibus, killing the driver and injuring three others.

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the articulated Mack truck, with registration number MUS 729 XY, reportedly suffered a brake failure before crashing onto the minibus, popularly known as ‘Korope’.

    The minibus driver died instantly, while three passengers, two women and a man, were rescued alive by LASTMA officials and handed over to medical personnel for immediate evaluation, although they sustained no visible injuries.

    The crash caused major traffic congestion, blocking more than half of the roadway and spilling gridlock into adjoining streets such as Shofunde and Olufunlayo. 

    LASTMA operatives quickly implemented traffic diversion measures to ease the flow.

    In a related development, the truck driver, who attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended by LASTMA officers and handed over to the Nigeria Police.

    Officers from both Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions were present at the scene.

    Personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), and the Nigeria Police joined efforts to recover the deceased, secure the area, and restore order.

    Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the urgent need for roadworthiness compliance among heavy-duty vehicle operators.

    he said, “Truck operators must adhere strictly to safety protocols. It is non-negotiable that every articulated vehicle undergo thorough mechanical inspection, especially the braking systems, before hitting the road. Preventable tragedies like this must end.”

    Hon. Giwa also reaffirmed the government’s resolve to enforce road safety regulations, enhance emergency response systems, and ensure strict compliance with vehicle inspection protocols.

    Hit-and-run driver kills 12-year-old student, injures sibling in Lagos

    A n hit-and-run accident on Monday afternoon claimed a 12-year-old student while her 15-year-old sister sustained serious injuries.

    The accident occurred around 3:35 p.m. at Ogundare Bus Stop along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway when an unidentified driver, recklessly speeding on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane, struck the two pedestrians as they made their way home from school.

    The victims were left critically injured before being rushed to Orile Agege General Hospital.

    Sadly, the younger sibling succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment while the 15-year-old was later transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for advanced medical care.

    Lagos Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh assured the public that a thorough investigation was already underway.

    Expressing condolences to the victims’ family, CP Jimoh urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, speed limits, and safe driving practices to prevent such tragedies.

    He expressed confidence that the Command will get to the root of the matter and ensure justice is served.

    An accident involving two containerised trucks one loaded and the other empty occurred yesterday at Powerline by Cele Bus Stop, Ita-Oluwo, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that three individuals were killed in the incident, while two others were rescued from the wreckage with injuries and taken to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, for treatment.

    According to reports, the truck had a brake failure while allegedly trying to evade a revenue collector in pursuit.The mechanical failure led to a chain reaction, causing the truck to collide with other vehicles and damaging nearby structures.

    Emergency services, including LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Fire Service, and personnel from the Nigerian Army’s 174 Battalion, responded promptly to the scene.

    LASTMA officials secured the area with caution tape to facilitate rescue operations and prevent further harm to bystanders.

    Its General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condoled with families of the deceased.

    Nine persons have been confirmed dead and others injured in separate incidents that occurred across Lagos on Sunday.

    Four of the victims were said to have died in a fire outbreak at a lounge in Ajegunle; three lost their lives during a multiple auto accident along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and the other two were killed after a school’s fence collapsed at Ejigbo.

    It was learnt that the lounge inferno occurred around 7:45am, at Baale Road, Olodi Apapa.

    The four victims who were burnt beyond recognition, were said to be staff members of the bar.

    Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incidents. 

    He said the four employees of the lounge were yet to be identified, adding that their charred bodies had been evacuated to the Infectious Disease Centre, Yaba, for autopsy.

    Hundeyin said investigation had commenced to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak, adding that the value of affected properties were yet to be ascertained.

    For the collapsed school fence, the police spokesman said three persons were affected but two were confirmed dead at Isolo General Hospital where they were rushed to.

    He said the incident occurred at Apano Street, off Nurideen Obe Street, around 10:30am.

    Hundeyin identified the victims as Amaka, 30, Etim, 28, and Emmanuel, 12.

    He said they were walking when the fence collapsed on them during the heavy rain.

    “The victims sustained serious injuries, because unconscious and were rushed to the hospital. Etim and Emmanuel were sadly confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The other victim is receiving treatment at the Orthopedic hospital,” he said.

    Hundeyin said the fatal multiple road crash occurred around 6pm and involved an unregistered black truck landed with black oil, two commercial buses and a saloon car.

    He said the truck which was unregistered, lost control and rammed into the other vehicles at Second Rainbow, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

    The police spokesman said the three deceased persons were passengers onboard one of the commercial vehicles, adding that all the vehicles involbed in the accident had been recovered for inspection.

    “Efforts are on to arrest the erring fleeing truck driver. Investigation is in progress,” he said.

    A mother and her nine-year-old son were rescued yesterday by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after a sand-laden truck collapsed on them.

    The accident happened at the Iyana-Ipaja axis of the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, by Danco Filling Station.

    Driver of the truck (AGL 48 YD) lost control due to reckless driving and the truck somersaulted in the process. The woman, her son and the driver sustained serious injuries.

    According to LASTMA, the truck driver was dragging Right of Way (R.O.W) with another heavily loaded containerised trailer.

    LASTMA officials from Zone 16, led by Salau Akeem (aka Alfa) carried out the rescue operations, while ambulance from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) took the injured to the General Hospital.

    Policemen from Ile-Epo Division provided security back-up till the truck was evacuated from the road.

    At least three people yesterday died in an accident and four others were injured when a truck rammed into a commercial bus (Danfo) in Lagos.

    The accident occurred around 3pm at Agunlejika bus stop on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

    It was gathered that the driver of the Danfo with registration number MUS485XW was driving against the traffic when he collided with a truck carrying a container..

    An eyewitness told The Nation that many passengers were injured, while others were trapped under the truck.

    The driver was reportedly speeding and he collided with a truck marked KRD426XL, which was equally on top speed.

    A man, who identified himself as Tunde, said he saw victims trapped under the trailer, adding that some of their legs were cut off.

    “It was a horrible sight. As soon as the accident occurred, the driver of the trailer escaped for fear of being killed,” he said.

    Another man said the accident was between a bus, a truck and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), who were struggling for right of way.

    “The three vehicles were heading towards Oshodi. They were struggling for space on a road that was very free. “They were trying to overtake one another. The SUV turned to the bus’ direction, the bus turned towards the container, then the container hit the Danfo.

    “The bus somersaulted, which led to the death of the conductor and two others. About four other people sustained injuries.”

    Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and others evacuated the bodies. The injured were taken to the General Hospital, Isolo in an ambulance.

    The Nation learnt that operatives of the  Army, Police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) assisted LASEMA officials during the rescue.

    Confirming the incident, police spokesman Chike Oti said three people died and five injured.

    He said the accident was caused by over speeding.

    At least five persons were on Thursday afternoon crushed to death in an accident after a truck rammed into a commercial bus in Lagos.

    The accident occurred around 3pm at Agulenjika Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa expressway.

    It was gathered the white commercial bus was driving against traffic inward Mile Two when it collided with a containarised truck.

    An eyewitness told our correspondent so many passengers had their legs amputated, while many others were trapped underneath the truck.

    At the time of filing this report, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other responders were at the scene.

    At least four persons were on Wednesday killed and seven others injured after a pole fell on a stationary commercial bus in Lagos.

    The incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. at Ilasa, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

    Among the deceased was one Odejayi Adebola, who is said to be in his 30s.

    Our correspondent gathered that a truck heading towards Oshodi and on top speed developed mechanical faults and rammed into the pole.

    Consequently, the pole fell on the commercial bus and killed four people on the spot.

    An eyewitness, Eze Adiguo, said at least 20 persons were injured and eight escaped unhurt.

    He said: “The accident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. A bus parked off the road and was loading passengers. Suddenly, a tipper on high speed coming from Cele axis just rammed into a signpost. When the tipper hit the pole, the pole fell on the bus and four people were killed.

    “Policemen from Ilasa Division and officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) arrived the scene and evacuated the injured to the hospital.

    “One Odejayi Adebola was among those who died. His colleagues came to the scene. They said he worked with a marketing firm. All those who died were men.”

    However, the General Manager LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu, said three persons died in the accident, adding that seven people sustained injuries.

    He said: “The LASEMA Response Team (LRT) received a distress call through the emergency toll free line at 8:26 a.m. They were told of an accident by Ilasamaja inward Oshodi and deployment was made to the scene.

    “Preliminary investigation carried out by the LRT at the scene of the incident revealed that an empty lorry (iveco) with registration number MEK695XA  hit an overhead signpost which subsequently fell on a commercial coaster bus coming from behind.

    “Seven adult victims comprising four females and three males were rescued but they had severe injuries. They were stabilized by the LRT and subsequently transfered to Mushin General Hospital for further treatment.

    “Three adult males lost their lives and were later handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) to be transferred to the mortuary.

    “Motorists are urged to ensure they drive within the approved speed limit, watch out for road signs and other impediments to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.”

    Bus crushes man to death in Lagos

    A man was killed on Thursday afternoon after he was run over by a passenger bus on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane at Irawo Bus Stop, Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

    The Nation gathered that the unidentified man was knocked down by a Primero bus as he tried to cross the expressway at 12:10 p.m.

    The accident occurred less than 50 metres away from the Irawo pedestrian bridge.

    The vehicle with passengers onboard sped off as a crowd gathered at the scene of the incident.

    His corpse was put in the back of a truck by onlookers and taken away after lying on the road till 12:42 p.m.

    An eyewitness said the man erroneously took the double- lane road, which is used exclusively by the Primero buses, for a one way road.

    Another resident of the area, who gave his name as wale, said he was a few metres away from the scene when the man attempted to cross the road.

    Wale said: “I live in the neighbourhood. I was standing at the Irawo bus-stop layby when the accident happened. The guy was trying to cross the road, unfortunately the BRT was speeding. Immediately it hit the guy, the guy fell and rolled under the BRT and was crushed. That was how we discovered that he was dead.

    “We picked up his phone and tried to call his parents or family but just one person responded. We couldn’t gain access to his phone because it had a password. So, we removed the sim card and put it in another phone. The guy didn’t look properly before crossing and actually, there is a bridge just nearby. This place is not meant for crossing.”

    Officers of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) and the police, who arrived soon after the accident, assisted in crowd control at the scene.

    They declined to speak to journalists, but an LNSC official told The Nation that he learnt the man died after falling off a commercial motorcycle (Okada). But this was disputed by those at the scene.

    Another witness, who refused to give his name, said: “I just hear noise ‘gba!’ When I look like this, na so I see BRT pass. Na so dem say man don die o. There was no Okada passing by then. It was only that BRT.”

    The accident caused a build- up of traffic on both sides of Ikorodu Road.

    An attempt by a stick-wielding mob to vandalise Primero buses trapped on the highway was thwarted by policemen from Owode-Onirin Division, Ajegunle.

    The Owode-Onirin Divisional Police Officer (DPO), E. Bernard, approached the mob and persuaded them to allow the vehicles to pass.

    Fifteen passengers comprising 10 males and five females yesterday sustained varying degrees of injuries after two vehicles colluded on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos. Four of the victims passed out and were rushed to the Accident and Emergency Centre for stabilization. According to a source, the accident was as a result of over speeding by a commercial bus.

    It was gathered that 14-passenger bus lost control and rammed into an articulated vehicle laden with stones. “It was a serious accident and it occurred around 11am. There was heavy traffic on the bridge. Fortunately, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency  (LASEMA), police, Federal Road Safety Commission  (FRSC) and LASTMA were close by and they rode against traffic to safe the victims.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi led the operation and the victims were all rescued alive. Some were badly wounded. About four of them were unconscious and they rushed them to the hospital. They also removed the vehicle from the road to ease traffic congestion.”

    Similarly, LASEMA operatives rescued a destitute who got trapped in the lagoon around Iyana Oworo. The man, who was brought out with the help of a crane, was said to have been trapped in the mud for over 24 hours. The victim, who was unclad and feeble, was rushed to the Gbagada General Hospital for medical attention.

    Confirming the accident, police spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent of Police(SP) said: “The CP wishes to use this medium to warn all road users especially members of the transport unions, to obey traffic laws, particularly this yuletide season. They should ensure their brakes and tyres are in good shape.”
