The Lagos Council of Obas is to meet Governor Akinwunmi Ambode over the dilapidated Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Akran of Badagry De Aholu Menu Toyi I said yesterday.

Menu-Toyi I told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry that the road had retarded the growth of the ancient city and the movement of people.

The monarch said the council would visit the governor in order to hasten work on the Mile 2-Okokomaiko section of the road.

“I am not happy with the state of the road. Lagos-Badagry Expressway is an international road, which is supposed to be the responsibility of the Federal Government, but it has been abandoned.

“The road is deterring investors from coming to the town, while tourists are no longer visiting Badagry.

“Sons and daughters of the land now prefer to enjoy their holidays in Lagos instead of coming home.

“Motorists and passengers spend up to five hours in the gridlock before getting to the city, a journey that is supposed to take an hour.

“The road has now become a death trap to my citizens, this is sad,” the monarch said.

National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State Chapter Vice-Chairman Oloyede Edun said many lives had been lost to accidents due to the bad road.

Special Adviser to Ambode on the Environment Babatunde Hunpe said the state was awaiting the Federal Government’s approval to reconstruct Okokomaiko/Seme Border Section of the expressway.

Hunpe said work on the road would start immediately the state got the approval.

Lagosians will take delivery of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway expansion project before the end of 2019, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said.

The governor announced the new date in Lagos at this year’s World Community Day in Lagos.

The construction, which was started in 2012, had originally been slated to be completed in December.

Ambode also announced that the second batch of 114 inner roads would be delivered before next November.

These roads, alongside the ongoing Abule Egba and Ajah flyover and the Berger road expansion project, the governor said will underscore government’s commitment to reducing travel time within the state.

Speaking at the grand finale of this year’s Community Day, held at the Police College Parade Ground, Ikeja, he said these are part of his government’s commitment not only to improve travel time but also to keep the communities on the path of development.

Reeling out his achievements in the last one year, the governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdulateef  Abdul-Hakeem, said the government has completed work on six community halls and has strengthened community based security initiative.

He urged Lagosians to be law abiding and vigilant so as to pre-empt any form of criminality in the state, adding that the slogan ‘see something, say something’ will henceforth be adopted as the password for 24-hours vigilance in the state.

This year’s theme: “Community Policing: A panacea for securing our communities” Ambode said, is “a reminder of the urgent need to preserve the state’s heritage of peace and harmony as the prosperity of the state is stimulated by the security of investments and harmony among her people.”

Ambode orders repair of Lagos-Badagry expressway

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has ordered the state Public Works Corporation to embark on immediate and extensive repair of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway to ensure free traffic.

The General Manager and Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Works, Mr Ayotunde Sodeinde, told newsmen in Lagos on Thursday that the corporation had already mobilised its workers to site.

Sodeinde said that the repairs would include covering of all potholes on the road and giving the drainage systems would a facelift.

He listed the areas earmarked for repairs to include Iyana Ishasi, Ribamu Bus Stop, Ketu Bus Stop – Cele Nica, FGC Ijanikan – Iyana Era and ACOED pedestrian bridge – Alafia Bus Stop.
Others include former toll gate – Ibiye/Morogbo, Pure Water Bus Stop – Magbon, Ile-Epo Bus Stop – Oko Afo Outward Badagry.

Also on the list are Mowo Bus Stop – Elijah Araromi Bridge, Limca Bus Stop – Mosafejo (both sides), French Village – Low Cost Housing Scheme and Ibereko.

According to Sodeinde, the repairs on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway are in line with the mandate of the present administration to ensure zero tolerance of potholes.

He expressed optimism that when the rehabilitation was completed, it would, to a large extent, reduce traffic congestion on the road.

Sodeinde pledged that the Public Works team would work day and night on the road to meet the deadline.

“You know that when the roads are good, it means economic growth; people will be able to move from one part of the state to another to transport their goods without stress.

“It will also reduce crime rate on the roads as hoodlums and pickpockets thrive when there is gridlock.

“We are on our feet to ensure that we put the road in order to reduce the traffic on the road,” Sodeinde said.
