  • Re: Bayo Osinowo’s audacity of arrogance

    By Comrade Bisi Alebiosu

Reading through a piece with the above caption in This day newspaper at the weekend, one is not left with any doubt that those who are afraid of the widespread acceptance of Hon. Bayo Osinowo, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Lagos East senatorial election, will not stop at anything to pitch him against the good people of the district and the party.

For lack of anything cogent to say about the man many have come to know and accept as the UNIFIER of Lagos politics, these confused characters, starred in the face by imminent political demolition, sought to ascribe the toga of arrogance to Hon. Pepper!

But it turned out a misfire, for Hon. Osinowo, in Lagos East, Lagos state and the nation as a whole, is well known for the uncommon humility with which he has been handling both his political and private life.

So, to many who read the litany of lies, it was easy to discern that it is nothing but a badly executed hatchet job. Thus, the plot to discredit Osinowo failed at the very first try.

It is also instructive to examine the attempt by those behind the faceless write up to cause confusion and bad blood within the APC by alleging that Hon. Osinowo attacked the person of distinguished Senator Gbenga Ashafa.

Osinowo, the gentleman that he is, will never abuse or disrespect any of his teeming followers, talk less of a man he is desirous of succeeding. He holds Ashafa in high esteem and he has said so on many occasions. A good example was at the last reconciliation parley at the Ikorodu town hall on Wednesday December 19, 2018. Speaking about Ashafa, Pepper said, “Senator Ashafa is a gentleman whose approach to politics is highly commendable.” This he said in the full glare of guests and party members present.

We are thus happy that according to the writer of the piece, Senator Ashafa too insisted that “Bayo is my brother and I do not believe that he has said all the things you have confronted me with this afternoon. I have also not heard any such audio recording, where he might have said those things.” We feel there is nothing more to add to the statements of these two political associates. In their own words, they’ve told trouble makers to steer clear.

The situation in Lagos East today is that Senator Gbenga Ashafa of the APC is the senator representing the district and Bayo Osinowo, also of the APC, by the grace of God and the support of the good people of the area, will succeed him. Dreamers can continue to build castles in the air though.

There is no crisis within the party in the district. Under the able leadership of Governor Aminwunmi Ambode, Lagos East is set to return, not only Osinowo but all APC candidates in the next general election. We understand how pressured by this reality our detractors are, hence their panic induced efforts to create enmity among our chieftains.

It is important to add the reconciliation efforts initiated by our leaders are yielding great results. Thus no effort by the opposition can renew bad blood in APC. We are uniting fast in the task ahead. The primary elections had come and gone, and calm has returned to the political circles within the APC in Lagos State. Our Governor is no longer aggrieved; he is a true party man who is prepared to lead us all to victory once again.

Also, Senator Ashafa has been drumming up support for all the candidates of the party in the state. He and Hon. Osinowo, alongside other stakeholders, are working closely together in the build up to the 2019 election.

The facts are there for all to check. Given the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by our leaders and contenders, it is very certain that APC is formidable enough to annihilate the rag tag opposition existing in Lagos East.

And to the questions about Osinowo’s representation for Kosofe in the Lagos State House of Assembly for 16 years, space and time will not be enough here and now to reel out the very long list of his achievements.

We urge those in doubt to avail themselves copies of brochures produced by his office to showcase that or call (08026003772) to be further educated about the legislator called Hon. Bayo Osinowo.

To provide a brief of what you will find out about him, let me just say aside the numerous legislative interventions of his in the assembly, he became the symbol of effective collaboration between the executive and the legislature in the government of the state. I wish you happy reading of the brochures.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that when elected into the red chamber, Hon. Bayo Osinowo, a.k.a Pepper, will build on the towering track record laid by Senator Olorunimbe Mamora, which is now being sustained by Senator Gbenga Ashafa, in such manners that Lagos East will remain a respected and sought after in the comity of senatorial districts across the country.

One thing worked against the intentions of those behind the hatchet job though; the choice of the person to do the writing. While even the visually impaired could discern the sponsored and suborned nature of the article easily, the writer further made a lazy job of it all by making his jaundiced write up too patent and obvious, so much so that it came across exactly as what it is; a devilish script by evil minded political players.

Coming at a time when a couple of credible and proven research and media opinion polls have put Hon. Osinowo over and above his opponents, as the man to beat in the senatorial race, one can understand the worries of these characters. But what we frown at is the desperation that is now so obvious in there sinister moves. We don’t need that in the politics of Lagos state.

So, for the opposition candidate or candidates and their collaborators, eyeing an opportunity from a perceived crisis in the APC to clinch a senatorial seat in the city of excellence after a long hiatus, we say, ‘it is not yet uhuru.’

If truly there is an opposition candidate that enjoys popular acceptance in the most populous zones in the district (Ikorodu and Epe with and Ibeju Lekki) as claimed in the piece, let the gladiators patiently wait till Election Day to reap from their real or imagined popularity. Hon. Osinowo is willing to wait, others should too.

  • Senator inspects constituency projects

In fulfilment of some of his campaign promises to enhance the welfare of members of his constituency, the member representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, on Friday embarked on an inspection tour of some of the intervention projects in Lagos East Senatorial District which he sponsored in the 2017 Budget.

The lawmaker, who expressed his wish that funding for some of the projects had come earlier, reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the people living in the 98 wards of Lagos East Senatorial District enjoy the benefits of democracy in tangible form.

Ashafa said: “This is just an inspection tour of the projects requested by members of my constituency which I facilitated in the 2017 Appropriation Act. I would have hoped that the projects were completed earlier; but then the funding for some of the projects just came recently as I have been informed by the contractors on site.”

Continuing, Ashafa said: “I am only contented when I see that our intervention projects are delivered to each locality. That is one of the ways that our people in the grassroots would enjoy the dividends of democracy in tangible form.”

Some of the projects inspected included a newly built block of classrooms with offices, toilet and storage at St. John Anglican Primary School, Imota Local Council Development Area (LCDA), an ICT Centre/Town Hall also in Imota LCDA, a 500 KVA Transformer for residents of Agbowa, Ikosi Ejinrin LCDA where absence of transformer had led to persistent lack of power supply for years. The Senator also inspected a solar-powered borehole in Itoikin, Ikosi Ejinrin LCDA.

The residents expressed their happiness for the gesture in their areas as they praised Senator Ashafa.

Dignitaries present at the event were Elder Lateef Sangosanya (L.G.A  APC Chairman), Mrs Funke Ogun (Woman Leader), Hon. Sulaiman Yusuf (former E.S and Youth Leader) and Otunba Nurudeen Yusuf (APC Chieftain). They expressed appreciation to the Senator for a promise kept, even as they endorsed him for another term.

  • Senate seeks police, military collaboration to rid Lagos of kidnappers

Senate seeks police, military collaboration to rid Lagos of kidnappers

The Senate Tuesday resolved to ask the Federal Government to mandate the Nigeria Army, Navy and other security agencies to assist the Police in its quest to rid Lagos State particularly the creeks in Lagos East Senatorial District of criminal syndicates making use of its waterways to perpetuate crime.

The upper chamber also urged the government to direct the inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to immediately instruct the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, to beef up the strength of the task force already constituted in order to effectively secure all the affected creeks and communities.

It also advised the government to direct Mr. Idris to immediately make available sufficient helicopters for aerial surveillance and gunboats to the Marine Police department of the Lagos State Police Command to enable the State Command to effectively tackle the activities of militants in Lagos State.

The resolutions followed the adoption of a motion on “the urgent need for the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies to intervene in the increased rate of kidnapping in the Lagos East Senatorial District and securing the water ways.”

Senator Gbenga Ashafa (Lagos East) who sponsored the motion in his lead debate noted recent increase in the activities of criminal syndicates who specialize in kidnapping/militant activities in and around communities in the Lagos East Senatorial District, particularly Kosofe, Epe, Ikorodu, Ibeju Lekki Local Government Areas.

Ashafa expressed concern that the activities of the criminals have forced law-abiding residents of coastal/riverine communities of the affected communities to flee their communities and livelihood out of fear.

He further expressed concern that on Friday, 7th April, 2017 one Mr. Ademola Salami, a 42 year old plank dealer was kidnapped in Ise community in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos East Senatorial District by seven dare devil abductors, who escaped in a gunboat via the river.

The abductors, he said, were demanding the sum of N100 million as ransom for his release.

Ashafa said that “the situation is now so bad that even prominent citizens of Ise community, including HRM, Kabiyesi Onise of Ise, Oba Ganiyu Adegbesan, has had to vacate the community due to the level of insecurity in the area.”

He said that it is disturbing that for the past seven years, a divisional Police station commissioned in Ise had been a ghost of itself as no police officers were deployed there until the recent attack.

He recalled that a publication had the report of the case of two sand dredgers who were kidnapped in Ibeju Lekki by kidnappers that also stormed the community in a gunboat.

Ashafa further recalled that between April and July, 2016 there were reports of militant activities in some communities in Ikorodu, including Elepete, Agbede, Ishawo and Igbo-Olomu, which led to the death of residents.

He said that the militants were equally reported to have stormed the communities through the creeks using gunboats.

The lawmaker said that he is “alarmed that the recent kidnap incidents have assumed a totally new and disturbing dimension in the sense that just yesterday, 9th April, 2017 an army Captain, identified as Muhammed, two other rank soldiers, four policemen, and a civilian lost their lives after suspected militants attacked Ishawo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

“The late security operatives were responding to a distress call after the militants stormed and kidnapped some residents of Woodland Estate, close to the Ishawo creeks with about 10 speedboats according to reports relayed online.

“It was also reported that other innocent citizens who were seriously injured are now receiving treatment at the Ikorodu General Hospital,” he lamented.

He said that it is obvious that the activities of the criminal syndicates have caused untold hardship to the people of Lagos East Senatorial district and the intervention of the Federal Government is urgently required.

  • NASS: Ashafa urges APC lawmakers to unite

NASS: Ashafa urges APC lawmakers to unite

Senator Gbenga Ashafa ofLagos East Senatorial District, has urged other senators elected on the platform of his party, All Progressives Congress, APC to close ranks and settle down to work, having come to terms with the enormity of the task before them.

Ashafa made this statement in reactions to the senate inauguration fallout and how it affects the legislative body.

He pleaded that members of the APC Senators Unity Forum, the senators of Like Minds and other such caucuses in the 8th senate should collapse their structures and form a united, progressive front that will work with the new leadership of the red chamber for the overall interest of the Nigerian people.

The second term senator who is well known to be a bridge-builder amongst his colleagues in the senate made the call on the heels of the fallout which trailed the stormy inauguration of the senate on June 9 where Senator Bukola Saraki emerged as the senate president as against Senator Ahmed Lawan, the candidate anointed by APC.

He furthers, “We have to realize that the hopes of Nigerians are high. The new government has amassed a lot of political capital – having been elected as a result of the massive build-up of goodwill for our various candidates in the elections and the stark disenchantment with the previous administration.

As a result, the goodwill of Nigerians must not be taken for granted. So I make this call for one Nigeria and it starts with us – One Senate, united for the progress of our various constituents and translating change into policies and laws that will, in turn, yield tangible and beneficial results for everyone.”

Senator Ashafa urged all party members with various leanings to push aside their personal ambitions for now, noting that whilst the party’s decision is binding on us all, we must see the bigger picture which is a progressive and united Nigeria.

He concluded saying he will be devoted to pro-people policies and promised a re-invigorated approach to committee oversight functions upon resumption from the current recess embarked upon by the 8th senate.
