Abiru: Redefining culture of service in Lagos East

While other politicians and elected public officers are building estates and other business empirers, Tokunbo Abiru and his wife, Feyisola, are building men for the future in Lagos East Senatorial District.

The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Cornelius Ojelabi, led other party officers to Ikorodu at the weekend to witness the brand of visceral commitment and service to the community.

Senator Abiru, who represents the district the National Assembly, has expanded the scope of his programmes beyond lawmaking, oversight functions and empowerment to endowment, which is meant to prepare young men for the challenges of the digital economy.

No fewer than 4,000 teachers drawn from public and private schools from across the federation have been trained by a special and professional faculty at the SAIL Innovation Lab sponsored by the couple. Some of them demonstrated their skills at the Teachers’ Fellowship Graduation Ceremony, based on their training in enquiry learning using WhatsApp and Google. Thirty leaning hours were exhausted.

The programme attracted some support from the MTN Foundation, whose official, Odunayo Sanya, hailed Abiru for ploughing back to his immediate society.

Eminent community leaders at the ceremony held at  SAIL Innovation Lab, along Muba Abiru Street, Ipakodo Ebute, Ikorodu, including the paramount ruler, Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, Oba Semiu Kasali Orimadegun, Radodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Agoro, Governance Advisory Council (GAC) members-Prince Abiodun Ogunleye and Senator Seye Ogunlewe, and Ashipa Kaoli Olusanya, applauded the legislator for his contributions to human capital development.

In the mood of excitement were other guests-Tolani Sule, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Anike Adekanye, permanent secretary/tutor-general, Bode Oyedele from Ibeju-Lekki, Adeola Jokomba, state party secretary, Muritala Seriki, youth leader, Dr. Saheed Ibikunle of primary education board, Tokunbo Jimoh, Kunle Oduborisa,Deaconess Ade Osinnowo, and Akintoye Hassan, chairman of Lagos Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Many people, particularly teachers who were the focus, joined the programme online.

Thanking the couple for their initiative and support, Deji Abisola, chief impact officer of the programme, noted that they have touched many lives, judging by their numerous philanthropic and empowerment programmes. He said the teachers’ exposure to new classroom techniques have revolutionalised teaching and learning.

Abisola also thanked the MTN Foundation for providing free internet data and other resources. He hailed the teachers’ dedication to personal growth and commitment to the upbringing of students, stressing that the programme provided an opportunity for them to thrive.

To Miss Shalom of SAIL, the programme achieved three things: it aided the transition of the teachers from instructional to enquiry based learning; it enhanced the improvement of digital skills and it enabled them to embrace innovative classroom management practices.

Consistent with its two decades of community responsibility, Sanya explained that the investment of almost N60 million was worth it, adding that MTN decided to impact by partnering with the community to do better. The message is that 20 years after, the yellow impact is stronger. She hailed the teachers for contributing to nation building. “The knowledge is not for you only. You should spread the knowledge to other teachers.

MTN promised to build on its record of community support, including the award of 14,000 scholarship, empowerment of 15,000 women and donations to laboratories and libraries.

Abiru, who congratulated the teachers, told his story of success as a banker before becoming a public servant.

After three decades, the Senator crossed the bridge from banking to politics. Automation was the rule in the banking system then in Guarantee Trust Bank. It contrasts with the digital technological revolution of today.

To his surprise, 8,000 workers could not cope with the digital transformation. Therefore, it was evident that the the job openings required updated skills. As a senator, he emraced his legislative and empowerment roles. However, he had to expand the scope to endowment, based on previous experience. Although he had completed 20 school projects in his district, built a youth stadium in Epe, constructed markets, provided health facilities and distributed foods to 30,000 families, these programmes have not produced a permanent impact like his endowment programme.

“SAIL Lab Innovation is sponsored by me and my wife. It is a non-political organisation. I bring people here and the people being trained are assisted by them with jobs,” Abiru said.

The senator said that the scheme it later became a nationwide programme because of the partnership with MTN.

“Almost 9,000 lives have been touched by the SAIL Foundation. The procurement of facilities is not enough. We invested in a faculty that is focussed and dedicated,” he added.

Abiru said the goal is the development of human capital. It is free of charge. The environment is also inspirational. “The cost of teaching such skills for each participant cannot be less than N5 million. But it is free,” he said, urging the beneficiaries to apply and update their skills, and be good ambassadors of SAIL Innovation Lab.

For Sule, who was drafted to the event by Ojelabi, it was another eye opener. The commissioner acknowledged that the quality of well educated and well groomed teachers is critical to teaching and learning. Reiterating government’s commitment towards personnel training, he said:”Governor Sanwo-Olu is working to make Lagos the human development capital of Nigeria.”

Sule also suggested that “APC must look at the quality of representation and emphasise the criteria of capability, experience and background.”

He added: “Abiru is big; so Lagos East is reaping big.”

Ojelabi,  whose path had crossed Abiru’s when they both served as commissioners under former Governor Babatunde Fashola, said the senator has decided to plogh back to the community.

“The party is delighted by the contribution of Abiru. He is doing more than material empowerment. Some people collect the empowerment items and sell them out.

“Abiru is preparing the youths for the future, to become job creators and employers of labour. Ikorodu has decided to support APC because of what Abiru is doing.”

The party chairman said elected public officers on the platform of Lagos APC will be evaluated periodically to see how they are performing.

Ojelabi added:”APC will be assessing the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate members. That of local government chairmen has been done. We are evaluating to see the impact they are making. We will make the report out after ratification by the GAC. Let people continue to support Abiru.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Lagos East, Bayo Osinowo (aka Pepperito), has promised to bring more Federal presence and dividends of democracy to the zone, if elected in next month’s election.

The lawmaker said the town hall meeting with critical stakeholders in Kosofe and its environs was meant to feel their pulse ahead of the February 16 presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to him, the meeting became imperative to know where the shoe pinches the people of the area.

“My interest is to help humanity more at the Senate. I want to assure everyone of dividends of democracy. I will not disappoint your trust in me,” Osinowo said.

The meeting was attended by party leaders and members, artisans, youths’ groups, market men and women, traditional and religious leaders, among others.

The lawmaker said similar meetings would be replicated in Ikorodu, Ibeju-Lekki, Somolu and Epe.

  • Lagos East: Osinowo inaugurates campaign committee

The senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Lagos East, Bayo Osinowo, has urged his campaign team and party members not to limit their campaigns to him. He called for a harmonised-campaign that will see party members intensifying campaign for all party candidates at all levels.

Osinowo spoke at the inauguration of his campaign committee at plot 560, Ikorodu Road, a venue which will serve as his campaign office.

The candidate noted that politics is a game of popular participation which requires the contributions of all party members to win the majority. • Lagos East APC to Sanwo-Olu: Give us SSG

Lagos East All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders yesterday urged the governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to compensate the district with the position of Secretary to Government, if elected in next year’s election.

The elders, led by Chief Busura Alebiosu, said Sanwo-Olu is spending the remaining term meant for the Lagos East, adding that the district deserves the slot because the governor is from Lagos Central and the deputy is likely to come from the Lagos West.

A party elder, Senator Tony Adefuye, who spoke on their behalf during the “thank you” visit of the flag bearer to the district, urged him to shun vindictiveness, if he gets to power.

Although the flag bearer and the party have not officially announced the name of Sanwo-Olu’s running mate, Adefuye asked from the candidate why he was not accompanied by his “deputy.”

Reminded that the man likely to emerge as the running mate has tentacles in the three districts; his father being from the West, his grandparents from the East and his mother from the Central, the Third Republic senator disagreed, insisting that Lagos East deserved special compensation.

Adefuye, who congratulated Sanwo-Olu for his victory at the primary, said he will also be congratulated when he wins the February, next year’s poll.

He added: “This term you are going to spend is a term for the East. You need to compensate us. We in the East voted for you. The votes from us equalled or were more than the votes from the West and Central. Epe voted from their son. This is understandable. Please, don’t forget us when you get in. The governor is from the Central. The deputy governor is from the West. The Secretary to Government must come from the East.”

Sanwo-Olu stormed the Funplex Resort, along CMD Road, Shangisha venue where party elders and leaders from Ikorodu, Kosofe, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki and Somolu converged. He was accompanied by his campaign manager, Tayo Ayinde, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, Abdullahi Enilolobo, Dr. Tola Kasali, Bayo Ajisebutu, Sesan Daini and Gboyega Akosile.

Party leaders who received the candidate included former Deputy Governor Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, Second Republic Secretary to Government Olorunfunmi Basorun, former Transport Commissioner Alhaji Lanre Rasak, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Commissioner Muslim Folami, former House of Assembly Speakers Yemi Ikuforiji and Joko Pelumi, former Housing Commissioner Dele Onabokun, former Agriculture Commissioner and Lagos APC Vice Chairman (East) Ashipa Kaoli Olusanya, House of Representative member Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, House of Assembly member Tunde Braimoh, Ajiroba Wale Mogaji, Ademorin Kuye, Abiodun Salam, Yetunde Arobieke, Kafila Ogbara, Goriola Ogbara, Pa Banire, Tunde Temionu, Alabi Macfoy, Yeye Gbadebo, Chief S.A Oyedele, Bode Oyedele, and Sesan Olanrewaju.

Thanking God for his success at the direct primary, Sanwo-Olu also thanked Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his support, praying that God should give him long life.

He apologised profusely to the party faithful for his inability to visit all of them before the shadow poll, citing time constraints and other challenges.

Sanwo-Olu observed that, despite the omission, the district voted for him en masse at the primary in demonstration of their love and loyalty to the party.

The former commissioner called for unity and understanding ahead of next year’s polls, urging every member to put the primary behind and face the proposed elections with optimism and enthusiasm.

He said: “For those who did not vote for me, let us embrace ourselves. APC is a team. We must work together for victory.”

Reflecting on the competitive primary, Sanwo-Olu advised those aspirants who failed to get party tickets not to see the transient setback as the end of their political career.

He said: “United we stand, disunited we fall. We need to heal the wound of defeat and give ourselves a sense of belonging. The aggrieved should be pacified. I will like to meet with those aspirants and bring all of them on board.”

Sanwo-Olu promised to set up an all-inclusive government, adding that extensive consultation and participatory process will be its hallmark.

He stressed: “Some people don’t need anything; they just want access to the governor to give their views. The members of the party will take ownership of the government. That is the government of the people, by the people and for the people”.

Urging party members to intensify the door-to-door mobilisation, Sanwo-Olu added: “Tell our members and those who are not our members that a new dawn is imminent and that people should get ready with their PVCs. It is not going to be a campaign of mouth. We should reach out to the poor people at the grassroots in Alimoso, Badagry, Ibeju-Lekki, Kosofe and Mile Two, and let them savour dividends of democracy.

“If you walk with people, you will walk far. I want to walk far. The greatest dividend is good governance. Around 2005 or 2006, I was described as “sellable.” I am a product you can sell.”

Ayinde said: “Our in-coming governor of Lagos State has come to say thank you to you. Despite the short time and the fact that he could not go round Lagos State before the primary, you voted for him. He is thanking you for what you are going to do for him in 2019. He appreciates your loyalty and steadfastness to the party. “

Basorun, a lawyer and retired banker, charged the members to gird their loins, stressing that the battle must be won net year.

He said: “We are going to the field to work and succeed. Sanwo-Olu has told us what we should do. As from today, let us do away with euphoria. Let us be prepared to work. Let there be unity. I am for Paul, you are for Apollo. That should not happen.”

Turning to Sanwo-Olu, the party elder said: “You have to be in the party. The state governor don’t attend the state exco of the party. They don’t attend meetings. That is where to get the message and feedback. Find time to attend the state exco meeting.

“When we were in government, every week, we went to the people, we held meetings. God will guide you. Try to hold a meeting with the APC leaders from the East under the leadership of Chief Alebiosu. Some issues are better discussed at that level.”

Seriki-Bamu advised Sanwo-Olu not to take any action, based on lies and rumours, adding that these vices are associated with politics. He also advised the flag bearer not to abandon the developmental programmes being implemented in Epe by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

Seriki-Bamu also urged Sanwo-Olu not to forget the elders and leaders who work for his victory after the election.

He stressed: “I thank God for you. I also thank Asiwaju Tinubu. When you get there, don’t forget us. Tinubu was accessible. So, try to make yourself accessible. If people work for you and you turn against them, people will not be happy. If anybody says anything to you, don’t act on lies and rumours. Call the person and investigate the allegations. Don’t forget Epe. Don’t abandon the projects going on in Epe.”

  • Lagos East senatorial aspirant Razak picks up form

A former Lagos State Commissioner for Public Transportation, Chief Lanre Razak, has bought the All Progressives Congress (APC) expression of interest and nomination forms for Lagos East senatorial ticket.

He told reporters after collecting the forms on Monday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, the nation’s capital, that he has the backing of his people to get the ticket.

  • Lagos East: Why Osinowo should be senator

A socio-political group, the Lagos East Youth Alliance (LEYA), has urged the lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Bayo Osinowo, to contest the Lagos East senatorial seat.

The group said it was prepared to buy the senatorial nomination form for Osinowo, noting that he has given a good account of himself in Lagos as a ‘political torchbearer’.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Bamidele Ahmed, after its quarterly meeting held at the weekend in Lagos, the group averred that the clarion call on the lawmaker was designed to raise the bar of representation in the National Assembly.

The district, according to the group, deserves a better representation and a reliable mouthpiece like Osinowo who has been speaking for the downtrodden and relating with them.

It added: “In politics, quality representation in a political assignment heralds more support for another task. To this end, we have x-rayed all potential candidates gunning to represent us in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

“Thus, in the political voyage to get a befitting representation for the district, we have agreed to echo our support for an experienced lawmaker, who connects with the people and understands the nitty-gritty of good governance in establishing mechanisms that can accommodate the scope of all interests.

“We hereby calling on all progressives in the district to join us in our plea, as the positive choice before us in the next general election is to drag the longest-serving lawmaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Bayo Osinowo, to contest for the highly-coveted seat.”

The group said it had started approaching notable traditional rulers, community leaders, and  religious leaders across the five local governments in the district to market its candidacy to the people.

He thanked the governor for his dynamism which has ensured that “Lagos State remains the envy of all other states and the role model in governance, delivery of dividends to the people and strategy.”

  • No division in Lagos East APC, say leaders

No division in Lagos East APC, say leaders

    •Chieftains laud Ambode over achievements

Lagos East All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders have dispelled rumour about division and disharmony in the district, saying that the leaders and members are not working at cross purpose.

Rising from the meeting of the ‘apex leaders committee’ chaired by Otunba Busura Alebiosu, the leaders lauded Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his laudable policies and developmental programmes across the three districts. They also took exception to remarks by some agitated members that they never worked for Ambode’s victory in last year’s election, stressing that the allegation was a cheap blackmail.

At the meeting, the leaders passed a vote of confidence on Pa Alebiosu, who they described as a patriotic, committed and dependable leader.

At the meeting, which held at Mende Hall, Maryland, Ikeja were former Deputy Governor Abiodun Ogunleye, former Secretary to Government Olorunfunmi Basorun, Chief Akanni Seriki, Senator Tony Adefuye, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, former Speaker of House of Assembly hon. Jokotola Pelumi, Princess Adenrele Ogunsanya, Hon. Goriola Ogbara, and Chief Olu Alogba.

Other chieftains included Ashipa Kaoli olusanya, Chief Alabi Macfoy, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola, Denge Anifowose, Lanre Odubote, Alhaji sikiru Banire, Mr. Dele Onabokun, Chief Busayo Adebayo and Hon. Segun Tola.

Acknowledging the busy schedule of the governor, the leaders requested him to attend senatorial meetings as a leader of the district. They also expressed worry over the reluctance of the senatorial deputy leader, Pa Abiodun Sunmola, to attend meetings chaired by Alebiosu.

Basorun reported to the meeting the outcome of the recent Southwest APC stakeholders meeting and lecture by Prof. Ropo Sekoni at Ibadan, Oyo State capital. Adefuye briefed the chieftains on the report of the last year’s election and why the APC lost in some constituencies.

Lauding Ambode, Basorun said he deserved a letter of commendation for his achievements, including road construction, school rehabilitation and assistance to the local governments. He added: “The governor is using the knowledge of accounting and local government administration. He is doing well.”

Mamora said: “Governor Ambode has provided security gargets for security personnel to fight crime. He is the first governor to introduce air ambulance services to tackle emergency medical cases. He is doing well also in job creation.”

A statement by Pelumi, the secretary of the committee, said “the leaders confirmed the leadership of Otunba Busura Alebiosu as the leader of the Lagos East Senatorial District and in view of his satisfactory performance, a vote of confidence was moved and unanimously passed on him at the meeting.”

  • Lagos scales up infrastructural renewal in Lagos East

Lagos scales up infrastructural renewal in Lagos East

Residents of Ikorodu, Imota, Agbowa, Epe and other neigbouring communities in Lagos East Senatorial District, Lagos, have had course to smile. Massive infrastructural upgrade and renewal is now ongoing in the area, with some of them completed. Last week, Governor Babatunde Fashola moved government machinery to the area to inspect ongoing projects and hand over already completed ones.

One of the projects is the Imota Asphalt Plan that will solve the problem of production of asphalts for road construction and rehabilitation in Lagos East. The plant is expected to service Ikorodu, Ibeju Lekki, Eredo, Epe, Agbowa-Ikosi, part of Eti Osa, Ijede, among others.

One of the significant advantages derived from the citing of the plant in Imota area is the regeneration of their environment, which is to be demonstrated in terms of an increase in the number of roads maintained annually, employment generation and a boost in commercial activities.

According to the Chairman, Lagos State Public Works Corporation, LSPWC, Mr. Gbenga Akintola, the sciting of the plant would increase the number of road maintained, saying that the host community as well as four other Local Government such as Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu and part of Eti-Osa would experience an increase in the number of roads maintained annually, estimating that the plant would cater for 420 roads in this axis.

The new LSPWC Imota Asphalt plant is of a batch of mix type with a maximum production capacity of 180 tons per hour. The plant was manufactured in Italy by a company called, Marini, a company founded in 1899 and with over 60 years experience. The Imota plant is of the Marini Ultimap 2000 B5 range. It is considered the most universal range Ultimap plant type with best ratio hourly production, price and quality and charaterised by ample and easy access to whatever plant component in accordance with European regulations.

Some of the major components of the Imota plant include cold feed bins, bitumen storage, dryer drum, asphalt storage silos, emission control system, recycled filler storage and reclaimed asphalt pavement section. A batch plant’s strength such as the Imota plant primarily reliesm in its ability to make saleable hot mix out of almost any reasonable stockpile of aggregate.

The plant has high flexibility of production, making it possible to frequently change the formula and to produce small quantities.

It also has maximum efficiency and performance for the production of special products and more versatile.

General infrastructure in the yard where the plant is located are administrative block, gate house and security tower to oversee the whole site, staff quarters, goods store, generator house housing three generators of 635 KVA and 135 KVA, 16 concrete foundation, weighbridge, weighbridge office and bitumen tanks, diesel tanks and asphalt production.

According to Akintola, the plant’s civil engineering works such as preparing the foundations on which all the plant components are sitting, were solely carried out by in-house engineers and technicians of the Corporation adding that they also played significant roles in the installation of the plant upon its arrival from Italy, expressing joy that the Imota environment has already begun to witness an upsurge of commercial activities in the form of trading and vending which, according to him, are improving by the day.

Handing over the plant, Fashola assured that his administration would continue to find solutions to its developmental problems in the State instead of talking about them, appealing to Lagosians to cooperate with his administration in its developmental efforts by giving up land where required in the interest of the generality of the people, pointing out that government was making steady progress with its plan to develop all parts of the State.

He expressed dismay that in some areas where it had sought to carry out projects for the general good, some people had taken government to court, thereby delaying such a project and the benefits that would have accrued to the people, adding that such projects would also solve the problems of unemployment.

Citing the Imota Asphalt Plant as example, the governor said while under construction, scores of unemployed youths got jobs directly while other indirect jobs such as selling of food and other support jobs became available, saying that after the construction many residents had gotten engaged in supply of raw materials for the production at the plant.

“The plant is already impacting on the community addressing youth unemployment in a positive and visible way. The most interesting thing about the Plant is that it is most modern and sophisticated as it reuses all asphalt scrapped from the roads. The community has a few years ago complained of non-government presence. Slowly, but surely, the economy of this place is picking up. I will not be in the discussion of youth employment but I will engage in finding solution to it,” he said.

The governor also toured the Vocational and Technical College, Ikorodu where he inspected the MTN Youth Skill Development Centre and commissioned the Nigerite Projects Building, urging Lagosians to partner with the government so as to continue to sustain its development plans for the State. He expressed joy that his administration’s objective to lift the image and value of the Technical education in the State was being realized.
