Lagos seeks fresh census in 14 LGAs

Lagos State Government has called on the National Population Commission to honour the recent Judgment the National Census Tribunal and conduct a fresh census in 14 affected local government areas in the state.

The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, who briefed journalist on Friday in Alausa, said the judgment nullified the figures released by NPC and ordered a recount of the affected local councils.

Ipaye’s counterparts in Ministries of Information and Works and Infrastructure Mr. Lateef Ibirogba and Obafemi Hamzat attended the briefing.

He explained that the tribunal nullified the census figures released by the NPC in 14 local councils in the state on the ground that the counting was illegal and did not give the accurate censors figures of the state.

He said, “In the final analysis, the official national census results for 14 old local government areas (now 40 LGAs and LCDAs) in Lagos State have been nullified. This vindicates the resolve of the state government to base its physical and economic plans on a projected population of 17,553,924 in 2006 and over 21,000,000 currently. We now expect that the National Population Commission will urgently announce plans for a recount as ordered by the tribunal.”

  • Suit against LASG: Market leader collapses in court

An executive member of the Akannimodo International Market Association, Agboyi/Ketu LCDA, Pa Daramola Adesanya, on Monday collapsed before a Lagos State High Court, Ikeja during the hearing of the N3billion suit against the Lagos State Government.

The incident, which disrupted proceedings in the court as other market men and women rushed to the aid of their leader, stalled the hearing of matter for about 40 minutes.

Pa Adesanya, who is one of the complainants in the suit, was rushed to the nearby Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in a blue coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number, Lagos EY 361 EKY for treatment.

As the old man was being revived, he never stopped shouting, “Fashola has killed us o!, Fashola save Akanimodo market o!.”

The incident, however, forced the trial judge, Justice Opeyemi Oke to order an adjournment of the matter to May 6, 2013 for further hearing.

Before Pa Adesanya collapsed in the court, Justice Oke had ruled on the applications earlier moved by the plaintiff’s counsel.

The trial judge had ordered parties in the matter to maintain the status quo pending determination of the application asking for interlocutory injunction against the defendants.

“I have carefully considered the applications of both parties. Both parties should maintain the status quo pending the hearing of the Motion of Interlocutory Injunction,” the judge ruled.

Judge strikes out doctors’ suit against Lagos

Justice Benedict Kanyip of the National Industrial Court, Lagos, on Wednesday struck out a suit filed by doctors under the employment of Lagos State Government against their employers.

Kanyip struck out the suit, earlier slated for hearing, following the application by the doctors that it no longer represented their current positions.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the doctors, under the aegis of Medical Guild, Lagos State chapter, had filed the suit on May 9, 2012.

They were challenging the issuance of queries to them by the state government for embarking on a three-day warning strike on April 11.

The strike was to demand for the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS) approved by the Federal Government in 2009.

The guild also demanded for a downward review of the taxes paid by its members and the teaching allowances paid to the doctors on internship.

NAN recalls that the state government had on May 7, 2012 sacked 788 doctors for alleged insubordination and absence from duty without leave.

The counsel to the doctors, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, represented by Miss Omolade Idowu-Kuola, had filed an application to discontinue the case.

“We are going to discontinue the case against the defendants because events have overtaken the course of action, “ he said.

The state Attorney-General, Mr. Ade Ipaye, represented by Mrs. Kemi Olugbode, did not object to the application.
