Fire guts historic Shitta-Bey, Animashaun homes on Lagos Island

A mysterious fire outbreak on Tuesday destroyed sections of two historic Islamic family homes on Lagos Island, plunging the Muslim community into mourning.

The inferno, which reportedly erupted in the early hours of the day, severely damaged the Shitta-Bey family house, including its centuries-old mosque recognised by the Lagos State Government as a heritage site.

The residence of the Animashaun family, another prominent Islamic lineage on Lagos Island, was also affected by the blaze.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of other historic Islamic structures in the area, particularly the over 100-year-old Alli-Balogun Wasinmi Mosque located at 38, Nnamdi Azikiwe Street.

President of the Association of Lagos State Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries (ALARHOSPS), Otunba Nurudeen Ojora-Adejiyan, warned that the mosque is currently under serious threat due to a building constructed dangerously close to it.

“The Alli-Balogun Wasinmi Mosque is over 100 years old and now under threat. A building has been constructed beside it in clear violation of government regulations, especially the statutory six feet air space required for security and safety between buildings,” he said.

According to him, should a fire outbreak occur, the historic mosque would be highly vulnerable, just as seen in the recent incidents involving the Shitta-Bey and Animashaun families.

“May Allah not allow the calamity that affected the Shitta-Bey and Animashaun families to befall the Alli-Balogun family. These are three centuries-old Islamic families whose heritage must be protected,” he added.

Ojora-Adejiyan further questioned the approval process for the controversial building, asking, “Does this building have government approval? And if yes, who approved it?”

He disclosed that since the foundation of the building was laid in July 2024, the managers of the mosque have repeatedly drawn the attention of relevant government agencies, including the Lagos State Safety Commission, to the alleged regulatory infractions, but without any response.

Vice Chairman of the Alli-Balogun Descendants Union, Dr. G.T. Alli-Balogun, had described the fire incident as a painful loss to the Islamic community in Lagos and called for prayers and collective support for the affected families.

“This unfortunate incident represents a significant loss to our Islamic community. We pray Allah grants the Shitta-Bey and Animashaun families the strength to bear this hardship and the resources to rebuild and preserve their heritage,” he said.

As of press time, the cause of the fire remained unknown, while calls have intensified for urgent government intervention to prevent further loss of Lagos’ historic and religious landmarks.

  • Lagos Island, Red Cross launch fire safety awareness

Lagos Island, Red Cross launch fire safety awareness

The Lagos Island Local Government has partnered with the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Lagos State Branch, to intensify fire safety awareness across the council area, as part of efforts to curb recurring fire disasters that have led to loss of lives and properties.

Vice Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, Mr. Arulai Folami, disclosed that the fire safety sensitisation exercise is one of the council’s cardinal programmes aimed at proactive disaster management.

According to Folami, the local government resolved not to wait for disasters to occur before responding, hence the decision to organise a Fire Safety Walk to educate residents, traders, and market women on preventive measures.

“We don’t want to wait until disaster happens before we come in. That is why we are taking a bold initiative to sensitise residents and market women on the do’s and don’ts of fire safety to avoid fire outbreaks on Lagos Island,” he said.

He recalled past fire incidents on Lagos Island that resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties, stressing that the council has adopted community sensitisation as a key emergency management strategy.

“One of our strategies is to go out there and educate the people on the importance of having fire extinguishers in their homes, shops, and even fire boards. These can serve as the first line of response before the fire service arrives,” Folami added.

The vice chairman expressed optimism that the campaign would significantly reduce losses, noting that many market women have already begun purchasing fire extinguishers for their shops.

“Our chairman is very proactive, and we already have the cooperation of market women. We want other markets on Lagos Island to take a cue from this so that the huge losses to fire disasters can be avoided,” he said.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State Branch, Mrs. Adebola Kolawole, said fire outbreaks have become frequent on Lagos Island, often caused by carelessness, heat, and other human factors.

She described the local government as a critical stakeholder in disaster management, noting that Red Cross officials often encounter council representatives at disaster sites.

“This partnership has been ongoing for eight years, and successive chairmen and executives have supported us. This year, the local government has shown even stronger commitment by supporting us financially and physically,” Kolawole said.

She urged other local governments in Lagos State to emulate Lagos Island’s example by identifying disaster-prone areas within their jurisdictions and working with the Red Cross to prevent emergencies.

“Beyond fire outbreaks, we have building collapses, explosions, and pipeline vandalism in other areas. If all local governments take responsibility, it will help Lagos State as a whole,” she added.

The Branch Communication Officer of the NRCS, Lagos State Branch, Mr. Olushola Tejuosho, noted that fire disasters remain a global threat, citing major incidents in Nigeria and abroad.

“In December 2017, over 1,000 shops were destroyed by fire in Kaduna State, displacing more than 1,000 families. Globally, fires have claimed lives in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and more recently, Hong Kong,” he said.

Tejuosho added that in Lagos State alone, a fire outbreak last year destroyed 14 buildings at the popular Tom Jones Market on Lagos Island, underscoring the urgent need for prevention through education.

He further called on traders, community members, youth groups, and civil society organisations to support the campaign.

“Fire disasters are preventable. Through education, preparedness, and collective action, we can save lives and protect livelihoods,” he said.

  • Urban regeneration of Lagos Island underway, says commissioner

Urban regeneration of Lagos Island underway, says commissioner

The urban regeneration of Lagos Island will start soon, the Lagos State Government has said.

It affirmed that a conducive environment is very essential for economic growth.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab hinted this after a tour of Lagos Island and environs.

According to him, the urban renewal of Lagos Island is necessary to effectively address the flooding that has posed serious threats to lives and properties in the area.

The project will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

Wahab said: “We want to have a holistic approach which requires the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to sign off some alignments because of the planned regeneration of the total infrastructure of Lagos Island.

“The ministry would reconstruct 13 secondary collectors, two drainage outfalls, and upgrade some drainage channels, while the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure would construct the roads. These projects would go on at the same.

“The sign-off requires a joint agreement with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on the drainage level, the alignments, the collector, outfall, the depth and width of each of the channels, so the project can be beneficial to the community.

“The roads would be higher than their current status, as well as the tertiary drains that will be built to discharge into the collectors. These these efforts will end flooding on the Island.”

Wahab promised that the contractor would begin work immediately and the projects would be delivered in no time in order to permanently curb flooding in the area.

The team also visited Nnamdi Azikwe Road, following a public complaint that certain properties were built on drainage channels. The commissioner said the affected buildings will be marked and the owners served contravention notices, after which they will be prosecuted if found guilty.

The team thereafter moved to Moshalashi Street where an old pumping station had been converted into a shopping mall. Wahab said owners of the building will also be invited to check necessary approvals and documents.

Wahab added that the construction/cleaning of canals are ongoing across the state to allow water flow naturally. He stressed that the government will not relent in performing its responsibilities of maintaining a flood-free and clean environment.

The team also checked the ongoing pumping station project at Ilubirin, where he said the civil construction of the project has been completed. He noted that the only things left are mechanical installation to get the station running.

“The equipments are here; the generator and the transmitter are also ready; once connection is done, we will open the outlet and this will also compliment the urban regeneration efforts to deflood Lagos Island,” he added.

The commissioner urged the community to take ownership of the project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels, road medians and setbacks. He stressed that it is the responsibility of the community to maintain the project to ensure its sustainability.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, appealed to residents to bear with government when the project begins, saying achieving them may come with some pains but it will be beneficial to all in the long run.

“We need to have a change in attitude to protect our environment because it is our land and our future,” he added.
