Lagos lawmakers seek collaboration to end food insecurity

Lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday held simultaneous stakeholders’ meetings with their constituents with renewed commitments to boost food security and sufficiency in the state.

They also called for collaboration by the stakeholders to end food insecurity.

This was contained in a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, the

chief press secretary to the speaker.

Speaking in his Agege Constituency 1, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, identified food insecurity as a multi-faceted challenge requiring the efforts of the government and the people to resolve.

This year’s stakeholders’ meeting is the ninth in the series and has the theme: ‘Ensuring Food Security for Sustainable Future: Youth Participation and Home-Grown Farming’.

Dr. Obasa said the Lagos Assembly was committed to ensuring food security in line with the United Nation’s sustainable

development goals of eradication of poverty.

“We at the Lagos State House of Assembly are committed to making Lagos an producing state and not just a consuming state in the agriculture value chain to tackle the present-day reality of food insufficiency.

“Our commitment is exemplified through transformational laws and policy supervision in the agricultural sector,” he said noting that with the collaboration of the Assembly, the government of the state has made giant strides in the agriculture sector.

He listed some of the agricultural initiatives to include the setting up of the 34-hectare Ikorodu Fish Farm Estate which has the capacity to produce and

process 10,000 tons of fish per year partnering with 400 fish farmers in the State

    He mentioned the AGRIC-YES

programme and “the Oke-Aro and Gberigbe Pig Farm Estates that currently partners with 1,200 farmers and have the capacity of housing and processing 88,000 mature pigs per annum.

“It is important to reiterate that, on our part as lawmakers, we have also created an enabling environment for farming activities to thrive in the state,

particularly through the passage of anti-open grazing of livestock Law in September, 2021.”

He said to achieve food sufficiency, farming capacity needs to be widened while residents should consider animal husbandry.

In his opening remarks, the chairman of Agege Local Government Area, Ganiyu Egunjobi, identified insecurity and non-availability of low interest loan for the youth population as responsible for the food crisis.

“This meeting cannot come at a better time. The problem responsible for the food shortage are many among which are insecurity that has prevented many farmers from accessing their farms. Farming in Nigeria is no longer attractive to the teeming youths.

“I want to suggest to the government at all levels to subsidise farming and also give loans at very low interest to farmers. The government should also improve on existing physical infrastructures in farming communities that would discourage urban migration and encourage youths to embrace farming. Farming and youth unemployment are recurring issues which require multidimensional interventions to tackle,” he said.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Akinyemi Olusegun of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, urged the youths and residents in the state to engage in urban farming.

“In Lagos, we are more than 22 million and as a result we have a huge need for food. People want to eat and engage in food business,” he said urging youths to focus on home-grown farming.

“Let us serve the people effectively so that they could see that we are working.

“Let us ensure that we push Lagos State to be like a country. A state like California and Atlanta in the United States of America could stand on their own based on what they have been doing.”

  • Lagos lawmakers mourn ex-Mushin LG chairman

Lawmakers at the Lagos State House of Assembly have described the death of the immediate past chairman of Mushin Local Government, Hon. Tunde Adepitan as a sad loss.

It will be recalled that Adepitan died on Wednesday 20th April, 2016 after battling with heart-related disease.

The matter was raised by Hon. Olawale Olayiwola, who is representing Mushin Constituency 2, who stated that Adepitan died suddenly at age 55 and that he was a great member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who did his best for the people.

“He was a teacher before he joined politics. We should write a condolence letter to his family, pay a visit to them and observe a minute silence on his behalf,” he said.

In granting the requests, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa stated that Adepitan was a gentleman, who served as the Chairman of Mushin Local Government for six years.

“No one can stop death, when it is time for anybody to go. We pray God to forgive his sins and grant him eternal rest. We will observe a minute silence on his behalf, write a condolence letter to his family, and send the letter through the representatives of Mushin Area,” he said.

The representative of Mushin Constituency 1, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho said that she was moved by the innocence of a six-year old daughter of the deceased, who was oblivious of her father’s death with the way she was playing and singing, when she and others paid a condolence visit to the family.

She stated that residents of Mushin area have refused to be consoled after Adepitan’s death was announced as she said that he was a man of the people, who decided to pursue personal business having served the people meritoriously before death took him away.

Also, Hon. Rotimi Olowo, who said that Adepitan was his neighbour in Alfred Estate in Ojota, Lagos before his death, described him as a man of peace, who could not hurt a fly.

Olowo thanked the Speaker of the House, the Deputy Speaker and other principal officers of the House for standing by the deceased, when he was sick before death eventually took him away, adding that he would be sorely missed.

  • Excitement as Lagos lawmakers meet constituents

Excitement as Lagos lawmakers meet constituents

Tuesday, November 10, the Lagos State House of Assembly introduced an innovation to the business of legislation in the history of Nigerian politics. Constituents of the 40 state constituencies in Lagos State witnessed, for the first time, one-on-one interaction with their representatives; and were able to tell them what they wanted from the state government. This aimed at engendering rapid development of the rural areas and to avoid embarking on projects that have no direct significance to the well-being of the people.

Across the length and breadth of Lagos, halls, open spaces and car parks were filled to capacity as members of the Lagos State House of Assembly met their constituents for the first–ever constituency stakeholders’ meeting.

Stakeholders, including those who never believed in the project, arrived at the different venues before the agreed time of 10:00 a.m. They were curious to know what the lawmakers would tell them.

The Assembly had widely publicised the programme days before, detailing the venues across the 40 constituencies and other vital information.

In June, the Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa had, in his inaugural speech, assured Lagosians that the Assembly would involve the people in their activities. Obasa had assured them that their inputs would form part of 2016 Budget.

From Ikorodu, Epe, Lagos Island, Kosofe, Surulere and others, Lagosians trooped out in their numbers to be counted.

In Agege where Obasa met his people, every available space was occupied. The crowd was huge so much so that security agents found it taxing controlling it.

Obas, chiefs, various unions, traders, Community Development Associations (CDAs), youths, market men and women all had one thing or the other to say.

Obasa, in a welcome address, told stakeholders that the concept of the meeting was unique as it was first of its kind in the nation’s history.

He said: “We are collaborating with our constituencies to ensure that the impact of government is felt at all levels and to bolster rapid socio-economic projects, control of traffic, implementation of traffic laws, security and maintenance of law and order.”

According to him, the intention was to oil the wheel of the social contract which the Assembly has with the people.

He said the state House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of the state “by virtue of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” (as amended).

He stressed that this could be better appreciated against the backdrop of the fact that the Assembly performs other functions including oversight, checks and balances on the Executive and Judicial arms of government.

According to Obasa, Agege will soon be the beneficiary of a flyover bridge at Pen Cinema area of the constituency.

The people were joyous over this piece of news from their representative because Pen Cinema area records notorious traffic on daily basis.

On the Island, the scenario was similar as the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Eshinlokun told stakeholders that the Assembly was eager to know the desire of the people for onward transmission to the Executive for implementation.

The lawmaker was accompanied by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and the Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Tajuden Olusi. Oba Akiolu commended the Assembly for giving the people a voice through the initiative.

Olusi, a veteran politician and leader of the APC in the Lagos Central Senatorial District corroborated his view. He called for more of such rapport between the Assembly and the people.

At Lagos Mainland, Hon. Oladele Adekanye (aka) Lado interacted with  his constituents on their expectations. He commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for embarking on the construction of over 100 roads across the state.

The lawmaker assured the people of the sincerity of the Obasa-led Assembly on the project.

He, however, called on the Federal Government to quickly fix the power sector to ensure Nigerians are gainfully engaged.

For former NBA chief, Mr. Monday Ubani, the Lagos State House of Assembly deserved praises in view of the timeliness, concept and style of the stakeholders’ meeting.

He said: “I want to commend the Lagos Assembly for holding this exercise. All we are asking for at UNILAG Estate, Isheri Magodo is road construction and provision of street lights.”

Speaking on the exercise, a rights activist, Mr. Michael Okezie said the Assembly has blazed the trail in participatory democracy.

“I want to commend the lawmakers for the initiative because most of the time, we don’t have this kind of opportunity to talk to our representatives.

“That the lawmakers decided to do this on their own is a clear departure from the past. I, therefore, commend them and hope that other state legislatures will toe the same line for the benefit of the people.

Reacting to the exercise, spokesman of the Assembly, Hon. Tunde Braimoh, who spoke at the Local Government Health Centre Hall Mascara, Ketu introduced a unique dimension to the meetings as everybody present was handed a form to fill their expectations from government, even as two senior members of staff of the Assembly also documented the people’s requests.

The innovation, perhaps, made the event the faster to end, even as Oba of Ketu, Oba Isiaka Balogun, APC leader in Kosofe, Chief Stephen Oyedele, former chairman, Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Monday Ubani, market leaders and others praised the quality representation Hon. Braimoh is providing the people.

They also praised the Assembly for bringing about participatory democracy by networking with those who voted them into office. The scenario was equally the same across other constituencies. Stakeholders across the 40 constituencies requested for schools and roads.
