  • Lagos PDP to INEC: Don’t involve NURTW members in elections logistics

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State says INEC should not involve the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the movement of electoral materials during the February and March polls.

The state Chairman of the party, Dr Adegbola Dominic, expressed the position on Thursday at the party’s General Assembly in Lagos.

He said the NURTW had openly aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and that the union would surely protect the interests of the ruling party in the February and March elections.

Dominic said a recently held rally of the APC clearly revealed members of the NURTW and its leadership pledging allegiance to the APC.

He said the action of the transport union members clearly showed they were partisan and that they would work to ensure the victory of APC in the elections.

“The Lagos State PDP condemn and reject in totality the announced agreement between the INEC and NURTW with respect to transportation and delivery of election materials before and during the polls.

“We hinge our rejection on the admission and confession of the Lagos APC spokesman, Mr Joe Igbokwe, that officers and members of the NURTW are card-carrying members of the APC.

“The viral videos and pictures confirming notorious NURTW officers and members support for APC in Ekiti, Osun and Kwara states and the rally in Lagos shows the union is clearly partisan.

“Consequently, we declare that the NURTW cannot be fair in the distribution and delivery of election materials to all voting centres especially where PDP voters dominate.

‘”We seek that INEC should terminate the agreement and seek collaboration elsewhere,” he said.

Dominic condemned the violence in the recently held rally of the APC, saying the incident threatened democracy and safety of residents.

He said the PDP was not disappointed at the mayhem, claiming violence had been the stock-in-trade of the APC.

The party Chairman urged security agencies to provide security at campaign gatherings to avert what he called the loss of lives and valuables that characterised the APC rally.

The party chairman said the APC had failed Lagos residents and that there was the need for electorates in the state to vote out the ruling party in the general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prominent PDP members at the assembly included a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George as well as the Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani.

NAN reports that party members freely interacted with the executive and elders of the parry, on how to ensure electoral victory for the party in the state at the assembly. (NAN)

  • Intra-party rancour led to PDP loss in Lagos in 2015, says PDP chieftain

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Amos Olayinka, on Sunday said the party lost the governorship seat in Lagos in 2015 because of internal rancour.

Olayinka told newsmen that intra party rancour affected the ability of members to monitor and protect the party’s governorship poll in 2015.

Olayinka, who said he founded the PDP in Lagos with Chief Dapo Sarumi, expressed hope that Mr Jimi Agbaje and the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, would win in 2019 elections.

“There is no more friction in Lagos PDP. No rancour anymore. Disagreements happen but we will never again allow it to degenerate to the point of affecting our lot in the 2019 general elections.

“We know the under currents that made Agbaje to lose the election in 2015. We will not let it happen again,” he said.

He said that the party had gone back to the grassroots because it realised that it had to do a thorough homework in order to win the elections not only in Lagos but nationwide.

According him, underrating Agbaje will be the worst mistake anyone or party will make in the upcoming guber polls.

On PDP’s loss to the APC in Lagos over the years, Olayinka said that “the myth of perpetuation in office is not founded on constables.”

“It’s about 90 days to the 2019 general elections, I wish to seek the support of Nigerians and Lagosians for Atiku and Agbaje.

“I am committed to the PDP. I will remain in PDP and I believe that Atiku and Agbaje will provide purposeful leadership for Nigeria and Lagos,” he said.

He said Nigerians should jettison sentiments and lies against Atiku, describing the PDP flagbearer as a man with pedigree who was in the system for eight years and influenced economic policies still enjoyed by Nigerians.

The PDP stalwart also reiterated calls for Nigeria to restructure, insisting that regionalism would create checks and balances as well as reduce corruption.

He said that 2019 would be decided by individuals standing for the election rather than their parties, pointing out that Nigerians want to vote based on a person’s pedigree but not for a party. (NAN)

  • Lagos PDP needs prayers for headway in 2019, says Ogunlewe

A former Minister of Works and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Adeseye Ogunlewe, has urged party members in Lagos State to pray for peace and unity.

Ogunlewe, a senator during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, noted that without peace and unity the party would not rise above its present “challenges” toward realising its goal of winning the state in 2019.

“What Lagos State PDP needs are prayers, prayers and prayers. Members in the chapter should pray together for peace and unity so that the goals of the party can be actualised.

“Members must particularly unite at this challenging period to get victory in 2019,” the PDP chieftain told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ogunlewe, who described as unfortunate the recent killing at the party’s rally in Eti-Osa area of the state, said divine intervention was needed to avert a recurrence.

NAN reports that some hoodlums, on July 21, invaded the party’s rally at Eti-Osa, killing the Chairman of the Apapa chapter of the party, Mr Adeniyi Aborishade.

The invasion by the hoodlums and subsequent violence followed disagreements among members at the rally.

The police arrested the State PDP Chairman, Mr Moshood Salvador, and 10 other chieftains and charged them with murder at a Yaba Magistrates’ Court on July 25.

  • Lagos PDP preaches unity ahead of 2019

Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged members to shun divisive element capable of polarising the party ahead of next year’s election.

The party chairman, Alhaji Moshood Salvador, who addressed members during a visit to Ojo community in Lagos, said membership increased since he became the chairman.

He urged members to unite, noting that PDP is better positioned win in Lagos.

He said the PDP was doing all within its power not to repeat the mistakes of the past, adding that the leadership had zero tolerance to impunity.

Salvador maintained that the chapter has over 600,000 members, stressing that it was working towards producing the next governor of the state.

He said: “We are set, determined and prepared to win the 2019 election. But, I must say it is not a one man show. All hands must be on the deck to achieve our determination to win Lagos.

“I am really excited by the passion displayed by our members in the drive to make a PDP governor happen in Lagos. They have been stealing our votes in the past, but this time we won’t allow that to happen.”

Salvador disclosed that the PDP strategic committee had been inaugurated to ensure there was no gap in it quest for power in the state and the centre.

“I salute the courage of the party leaders, I must commend your efforts right from the ward level. The youth take their destinies in their hands to salvage the country.

“You can all see that the level of poverty is rising in the country. The PDP needs to intervene to save this country. It is appalling to note that the same the same set of leaders who have been ruling this country are the same people still running the affairs, on this not I urge the youths to stand up to play their parts”

He explained that states without PDP governors in the Southwest would devise means of generating fund to keep the party afloat ahead of next year election.

“The clarion call has come again; we must stand up and contribute our quota. Nobody can afford to sit on the fence, PDP is moving ahead and we will get there.”

  • Lagos PDP condoles with Bode George over son’s death

The Lagos State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday condoled with a former Deputy-Chairman (South) of the party, Chief Olabode George, over the death of his son, Dipo.

Dipo died in a Lagos hospital after a protracted ailment. He was 42.

State’s party chairman Moshood Salvador, in a statement after a condolence visit to the George family, said the Lagos chapter was devastated by the news.

He said the party shared in the grief of the family at the trying period.

Salvador prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased, while praying to God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

“May the care and love of those around you provide peace and comfort to get you through the days ahead.

  • Lagos PDP crisis: Adewale hands over secretariat to Bode George, BOT

Lagos PDP crisis: Adewale hands over secretariat to Bode George, BOT

chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Chief Segun Adewale, yesterday handed over the state secretariat of the party to the Board of Trustees (BoT).

Adewale is the factional chairman of PDP loyal to Sen. Ali Modu Sherrif recently sacked by the Supreme Court as the National Chairman of the party.

Adewale, addressing journalists shortly after moving his possession out of the secretariat, said that this was in line with the directive from the national headquarters of the party.

He said that a letter from the party headquarters had directed him to hand over to BoT members in the state.

Adewale explained that the National Caretaker Committee of PDP had ordered that the state secretariat should be handed over to Chief Bode George and other members of the party’s BoT in Lagos.

He said that the order was contained in a letter signed by the Secretary, National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ben Obi, and addressed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni.

Adewale said: “I am going to hand over the key to the BoT as instructed in the letter.

“`As you can see me, I have packed out my things. I am going to drop the key now.”

He instructed all his supporters to stay away from the secretariat in the interest of peace, even if the key is given to someone else.

“It is quite unfortunate that those, who as at last week Saturday, were campaigning against PDP while in Labour Party, now want to take over the secretariat.

“I was the one mobilising for the party during last Saturday local government elections in the state.

“Even at that, I am ready to leave the secretariat, the police asked us to sign an undertaking that there will be peace in Ikeja.

“I am not fighting with anybody, because if we continue this way, we will continue to lose elections in Lagos,” Adewale said.

The crisis rocking the party at the national and state levels made those loyal to Moshood Salvador to make an alliance with the Labour Party.

Salvador is the factional chairman loyal to Sen. Ahmed Markafi, who was declared by the Supreme Court  as the authentic chairman.

  • I have no hand in Lagos PDP crisis – Kashamu

I have no hand in Lagos PDP crisis – Kashamu

Senator Buruji Kashamu has denied involvement in the crisis rocking the Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of council elections in the state.

Kashamu was reacting to an allegation by a factional chairman of the party in the state, Mr. Moshood Salvador, who said  he was partly responsible for the crisis rocking the chapter.

PDP candidates from the Salvador-led faction were not recognised for the election by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

In a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Austin Onyiokor, Kashamu, described the allegation as baseless.

The senator said he had not interfered with the affairs of the Lagos State chapter of the party and would never do that.

Kashamu advised Salvador and his supporters to take responsibility for the crisis as well as the failure of the party to secure victory in the state for the last 18years.

“Blaming me for something I know nothing about instead of taking responsibility is uncalled for,” he said.

  • Why I defected from Lagos PDP to APC , by lawmaker

Why I defected from Lagos PDP to APC , by lawmaker

Hon. Jude Idimogu, an Igbo, is a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly from Oshodi- Isolo 2 Constituency. In this interview with Oziegbe Okoeki, he explains why he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

You left the PDP for the APC recently. what is the mood in your constituency after your defection?
Of course, a lot of my people followed me. Also, there is a process to be followed, when you decamp. We have done the first one on the floor of the Assembly, we need to do the second, whereby people would follow you to the secretariat of the party, when they ask you to come. That is what we call open declaration. The party you are going to would also want to see your supporters. We have not done that because the state Chairman of the party, Hon. Henry Ajomale is not in the country now. All of us would do it at the same time. We don’t know where it would be done yet, maybe it would be at the party secretariat or somewhere else.
Concerning  my people, some are happy, while some are not happy. it is a mixed bag. I have dIscussed with them, especially the Igbos, because majority of my followers are Igbos; not that Yorubas are not following me all the same. The Igbos are the brains behind the PDP in the state. We need to discuss and rub minds with them to know that change is imperative and that it is for the interest of everybody. We are in Lagos and the dominant party is the APC. I think it is right for us to work with that party. They understand, and most of them have accepted, while some have not. But, it is a daily dialogue.
Did you face any hostility from the APC members in the area since you joined the party?
For now, I am not facing any hostility because I have not mingled fully with the party very well in the area because the process has not been completed. I have not been attending their meetings. Of course, the whole world knows that I have defected from the PDP to the APC and I have started paying my dues to the party as it is deducted from source. So, I am a stakeholder in the party already. I can attend their meetings if I want to because I am now a member of the APC. I have to wait for the state chairman of the party to come back. We must complete the process even before I go to ward meetings. Afterall, I am representing everybody in the constituency. Dialogue is important, I want to win more people to the party. It is not everybody that supported the move, you must learn how to play your cards, and learn how to humble yourself when you get there. Relationship is important, may be by the time they relate with you, they would accept you well.
Two members of your former party in the Assembly that did not defect see those of you that defected as traitors. What do you say to this?
People are entitled to their opinions. Everybody has the right to decide his own case. You must know that the crisis in my former party is still there. If the crisis was not there, it would not have been easy for us to move the way we did. Also, you have to look at your future. I felt that where would I realise my dreams and future. Lagos State had never been in the same party with the government at the centre until now, so for the first time, the state is having alliance with the central government, I felt this is an opportunity for me. Moreover, ACN and the APC has always been strong in the state. I have looked at it and I have weighed it and considered it and for me to make impact for the people of my constituency, I have to do what I did. I want to see that after four years, I should have done many things for my people. I might not be able to do more, if I were in the opposition, but I feel happy for what I have done. I have followers and many people are with me, they know I am a grassroots person.
Many people feel that the federal government has not fulfilled its promises. what do you say to this?
There is no doubt that things are hard and difficult in the country, but you have to look at the indices. We are in a monolithic economy, there were crisis in the Niger Delta region and it affected us. Also, there was fall in the price of oil in the international market. Moreso, it would take time before the government could solve our numerous problems, it could take two, three or even four years. It is a global occurrence; it is not just about Nigeria. The government has recognised that the economy is not doing well and they are doing everything humanly possible to get it back. For example, foreign exchange is getting better through the intervention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). It is not yet Uhuru, but we will get there.
What advice do you have for the government?
Nigeria belongs to all of us. Whether I like this government or not, I have to pray that God should help the government in power to do well. Whatever happens would affect all of us. To do this would take time, so we should encourage the government to do the right thing. They have done well in the area of security and they have also dealt with corruption. If President Muhammadu Buhari had not come to power, all these discoveries would have been buried and it would affect all of us. People that kept foreign currencies are now bringing them out. It is not just about Buhari, our problem has been that we lack leadership. Right from the military government, what have they done for us. I remember in my secondary school days, I used to board train from the East to the North. We should examine ourselves to see if we are doing the right thing, how can someone steal an amount of money that could take care of a whole state.
Are you saying it is the stolen money that got us to where we are now, with the increase in prices of goods?
Of course, corruption is part of it. Talking about prices of goods and services, they are being imported with dollars. We must go into production because even the intervention of the CBN cannot last. We should ban certain goods that we can produce in Nigeria to encourage local production. A country like India had to close its borders at a time to encourage local production. If we fold our hands and allow importation anyhow, we will kill the industries and we are complaining that there is unemployment, is it the government that would employ people.
DSS wrote a report against the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu. do you think the senate is right in denying him confirmation, based on mere allegations?
The Senate is made up of 109 people that are representing all of us, which is why I say we should be careful of what we do today because tomorrow might be a judgment day. Though some people are saying his confirmation was denied because some senators have cases with the EFCC. The fact is that the senate has the right to confirm him or not. I heard Senator Dino Melaye saying that he was not rejected just because of the DSS report, but that he did not answer their questions satisfactorily. DSS brought two reports against him despite the fact that both agencies are under the presidency. May be Ibrahim Magu does not know how to play politics, everything in life is about politics. He ought to have met with the Director of DSS. He should have found out what happened, they came up with two reports against him. May be he felt the President could protect him. Everybody lobbies, even abroad, they lobby. Everybody cannot like you, we also lobby during elections to get what we want. I don’t think he is humble enough.

  • Lagos PDP faction backs Makarfi

A faction of the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its support for the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.
The members of the faction at its meeting held in Lagos adopted a motion affirming the leadership of Makarfi as the leader.
The factional chairman, Hon. Moshood Salvador, said that the leader of the party, Chief Bode George, and other leaders were behind Senator Markarfi.
He said: “The entire party structures in the state, including our leader, Chief Bode George, are solidly behind Ahmed Makarfi, who was appointed as caretaker chairman of the party in Port Harcourt last year.”
Salvador commended the National Assembly for accepting E-voting in the new amendment of the Electoral Act.
He said new amendment would restrict the state electoral commission from conducting local government elections without providing a level playing ground.
He added: “The new electoral amendment is cheering news to those of you who are aspiring to contest the forth coming local government election and the 2019 general elections in the country.”
The chairman said though the party suffered a setback in Ibeju-Lekki local government area, the differences have been resolved.
The publicity secretary, Taofik Gani, said the party was already initiating the process of declaring vacant the seats of six of its members who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
He said:  ”We are doing our homework and we are going to make our formal application to the necessary authorities for their seats to be declared vacant. We want them to come and test their popularity in their various constituencies.
“If truly they are popular they should vacate their and not even contest their seats that will be declared vacant in court but come out to come and test their popularity in an election.”
He added: “We affirmed our unalloyed support for the Makarfi-led caretaker committee and that in Lagos State we are one. There is no faction in Lagos State and we are all working as one as the local government election is coming up.”
