    The  Speaker of the  House of Representative,  Honourable  Tajudeen Abbas as well as the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Senator Aliyu Wadada  top the list of prominent  personalities that have applauded  the just concluded Lagos  International Polo Tournament.

    The Speaker who was  the Special Guest of Honour during the 2025 prestigious polo fiesta  that  climaxed last weekend in Lagos, described the event as one of the biggest polo festivals in the world.

    While congratulating  various winners  from the  three-week long international polo event, he singled out the Lagos Polo Club for its unalloyed commitment to the noble game of polo that has positively impacted on  the architecture of the  country.

    Equally, Governor Sanwo-Olu who  commended  the organisers of the event, noted that the polo festival has over the years been one of the major tourism drivers   as well as the celebration of   the rich cultural heritage  of Lagos State.

    In his remarks during the  grand finale of the glamorous fiesta, Senator Wadada who is the proprietor of Keffi Polo Ranch  in Keffi, Nasarawa State, maintained that the unequalled involvement of Lagos Polo Club in the promotion of the ‘king of games’ has helped in redirecting the energies of the youth and engaging them positively.

    Others like  Erelu of  Lagos,  the  Chief of Naval Staff , General Kapeh Kazir, business tycoons including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu,  among  others, all commended   the  tournament  for its unparalleled  excitement and   achievements over the century ago. 

    Revered as one of the oldest and the most prestigious polo tournaments in Africa, the annual event  that galloped off with 33 teams drawn from all major polo centres across the country, produced champions in four major categories and  a handful of subsidiary prizes that were also carted away.

    The epic  2025 Lagos International Polo Tournament that came to a befitting climax at the foremost Ribadu Polo Ground in Ikoyi, saw Lagos-based teams and their counterparts from Abuja and Kaduna dominating.

    Lagos MSD BabyBear  harvested four major prizes,  the Low Cup, Silver Cup, Sani Dangote Memorial Cup and the Chief of Naval Staff Cup in an impressive campaign for laurels in the grand finale week of the prestigious polo festival.

    Seyi Tinubu-powered Lagos STL team had earlier in the second week opened the door to Lagos dominance with a double honour, clinching the Oba of Lagos Cup and  the event’s second most wanted prize, the Chapel Hill Denham Cup.

    Other top winners include the Abuja-based Rubicon Polo Team that  won the event’s biggest prize, the Majekodunmi Cup, the Independence Cup and the Italian Ambassador’s Cup in one big swoop .

     General Kapeh-tutored Kaduna Clearwater Polo Team also came out the winners, clinching the late Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup.

    The duo of Lagos FK3 Pawa and Lagos MSR Bua teams complete the list of major  winners  lifting the Governor’s Cup and the Cancer Awareness Bowl respectively.

    Elated President of Lagos Polo Club, Bode Makanjuola,  congratulated the Lagos champions for their ‘determination, commitment and sportsmanship throughout the tournament’.

    He added: “We are glad that we hosted well and finished well as the best performing club in the country, while thanking our visiting friends from other clubs for being part of this historic achievement.” Makanjuola who commended the Tournament Committee for packaging another exciting and memorable Lagos international polo tournament, lauded all the major sponsors, partners and individual benefactors for making the 2025 edition of the glamorous tournament such a huge success.

    The Olu of Warri,  His Majesty  Ogiame  Atuwarse (111), has praised  the organisers  of the on-going  Lagos International Polo Tournament that climax next weekend, adding it is one of the most prestigious polo events in the world going by the record number of entry,  quality of play and participation by world’s  high ranking professionals.

    The royal father who was the Special Guest of Honour in the finals of the opening week of the tournament,  also  applauded  the  unalloyed commitment of the organisers and  Lagos Polo Club in general,  to the noble game of polo that has positively impacted the promotion of the game around the country.

    The Monarch maintained that the impressive involvement of Lagos Polo Club in the promotion of the ‘king of games’ and the promotion of tourism for over a century, has helped in redirecting the energies of the youth and engaging them positively.

    He noted that the club’s unwavering  commitment  with the noble game of polo has positively impacted boosted   tourism around the country, Africa and indeed the world.

    Regarded as one of the oldest and the most prestigious polo tournaments in Africa, the annual event has in recent years thrown up promising youngsters like  Yasin Amusan who was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the  international polo fiesta. Others include   Timi Badiru, Tomi Ojora, Yasin and the youngest generation of the Dantatas.

    His Majesty Ogiame  Atuwarse (111) alongside his royal contingent , were part of the discerning crowd that cheered on as   Lagos STL team  defeated their arch rivals, Lagos Shoreline A1 opponents in a tense final  game to emerge winners of the  highly revered Oba of  Lagos  Cup.

    The opening week of the 2025 edition of the NPA/GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament came to a climax last weekend with Lagos STL and Kaduna Clearwater Farm teams sharing the top prizes.

    Lagos STL were the biggest winners of the week, clinching the Chapel hill Denham Open Cup defeating Clearwater in a tense final decided before a full house at the foremost Ribadu Road Polo Ground in Ikoyi.

    The Seyi Tinubu Boys had earlier dispatched city rivals on Friday, Lagos A1- Shoreline 13-7 to clinch the Oba of Lagos Cup and sent a strong warning to other teams about their intention to dominate the event this year.

    Management of the foremost Lagos Polo Club has  set aside February 4 for the start of

    the 2025 NPA/ GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament with a record 33 teams to jostle for top honours across four major prizes and six subsidiary laurels.

    Organisers  said teams fully armed with foreign professionals and fortified with thoroughbred Argentine horses , would compete for The Silver Cup, The Lagos Low Cup, The Open Cup and the event’s biggest prize, the Majekodunmi Cup respectively.

    The subsidiary prizes include the Oba of Lagos, Governor’s Cup, Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, Sani Dangote Cup, the Italian Ambassador’s Cup and the Independence Cup, Lagos Heritage Cup, Chief of Naval Cup, and Owen Bowl would also be won during the fiesta reputed as the oldest polo tournament in Africa, dating back to the early 1900s.

    Speaking at a media press conference  yesterday to herald the  tournament,  Tournament’s Manager, Olumayowa Ogunnisi, disclosed the glamorous event would be decided over three weeks with six equally matched teams jostling for the Open Cup and the Silver Cup from February 4 in the opening week.

     “It’s going to be three weeks of thrilling polo experience for our esteemed sponsors, partners and lovers of the noble game,” Ogunnisi  said.

    According to him, the  highly revered Majekodunmi Cup will take the centre stage between February 11 and 16  with four teams including  Lagos Art Hotel, Lagos Shoreline,  Lagos STL and visiting Abuja Rubicon battling for the top prize.

    The last week of prestigious polo festival would feature teams drawn from major polo centres across the country locked in battle royale for the Low Cup.

    Meanwhile,  Ogunnisi  has commended the main sponsor GTCO and other sponsors, stating that having gained reputation as one of the biggest polo tournaments in Africa, the Lagos Polo Club look forward to delivering great values for the sponsors and participants during the epoch fiesta

    Lagos Polo Captain, Mohammed Sani Dangote , who gave a break of the teams vying for top honours also disclosed that professional players from Argentina, United Kingdom, South Africa, and professional umpires will also feature in the tournament.

    Polo Club president, Bode Makanjuola stated that the club is rejuvenated with the continuous infrastructural upgrade stressing that the entire club has been primed for safety of players and horses to go with international standard.

    Makanjuola also stated that with the number of teams and the calibre of players who would showcase their awesome skills, the 2025 edition promises an intense competition and a wonderful experience of entertainment for sponsors, players, guests and polo buffs alike.
