APC chieftain urges GAC to end Lagos speakership crisis

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fouad Oki has appealed to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to intervene and resolve the ongoing speakership crisis in Lagos state.

In an open letter titled, ‘Re: Lagos speakership: It’s time to stop all shenanigans surrounding the change in leadership saga’, Oki emphasized the need for the party to move forward and avoid further polarization.

He acknowledged that the decision to replace former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa may have been executed without proper engagement with party leadership, but stressed that the decision is now a fait accompli.

He urged the GAC to allow the legislature its independence and recognise the significant support the new speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has garnered from various sectors of society.

Part of the letter addressed to the GAC led by Prince Tajudeen Okusi reads: “This bold statement reflects a desire for progress and reform and it is imperative that we, as leaders of the APC do not dismiss the voices of the people. Ignoring this sentiment could lead to political dangers that may jeopardize our party’s standing and unity. It is instructive to note that public opinion and community support play crucial roles in shaping political decisions and the overall functioning of democratic governance. “Therefore, we must listen to their feeling and favorability of the preference made by these legislators as to who should be Primus inter pares amongst them.

“I urge you to consider the implications of prolonging this discord. Let us not allow our internal disagreements to overshadow the greater goal of serving the people of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.”

The APC chieftain cautioned that ignoring the sentiment of the people could lead to political dangers that may jeopardize the party’s standing and unity.

He emphasized the importance of listening to community feedback and incorporating it into the party’s decision-making process.

Oki’s appeal comes after Obasa’s removal as speaker, which was reportedly due to his perceived haughty attitude and disregard for the governor’s office the crisis has sparked debate and concern within the party, with some members expressing discontent over how Obasa was replaced.

Lagos speaker crisis: Aggrieved APC members kick against Meranda’s election

Members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Lagos West senatorial district have come under criticism following the election of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

It would be recalled tht on January 13, 2025, Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency 1 in Lagos West, was removed as Speaker by a majority of House members while he was in the United States.

His removal was attributed to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. In his place, Hon. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1 in Lagos Central, was elected as the new Speaker.

However, some APC members from Lagos West, under the umbrella of the Progressives Alliance, have condemned the decision, labeling it an “injustice” and an “ill-treatment” of party members from their zone.

In a statement signed by the group’s Secretary, Hon. Segun Banjo, they argued that Lagos West, which holds 20 out of the 40 seats in the Assembly, should have retained the Speakership position in the spirit of justice and fairness.

“We have no issue with Obasa’s removal. Our concern is that the lawmakers, in electing Meranda, were not well guided,” the statement read.

The group further expressed its dissatisfaction over the decision to pass over qualified lawmakers from Lagos West, stating that their zone has the largest electoral strength in terms of votes and APC membership.

“It is appalling and disturbing that the Speakership position was handed over to Lagos Central, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also hails from. This decision disregards the principles of fair distribution of political offices, which should reflect both religious and sectional interests,” they added.

The aggrieved members also criticised prominent GAC members from Lagos West, including Alhaji Mutiu Aare, former Deputy Governor Adejoke Adefulire, former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro, APC State Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Prince Rabiu Adio Oluwa, and former State Chairman Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale.

They accused them of failing to protect the interests of Lagos West in the House leadership.

“In any case, we leave them to posterity to judge their actions,” the statement concluded.

JUST IN: Obasa denies corruption allegations, faults removal as Lagos speaker

The former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has denied allegations of corruption leveled against him, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

The Nation reports that Obasa was removed as the speaker on January 13, over allegations of misconduct and mismanagement of funds, and replaced with his former Deputy, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda.

Speaking on Saturday at a welcome event held in his honor in Ikeja GRA, and attended by his supporters from Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas, Obasa refuted allegations of financial mismanagement, including claims that he spent ₦16 billion to construct a gate for the Assembly.

The Speaker also addressed accusations that the House purchased over 45 Hilux vehicles for lawmakers at an inflated cost of ₦47 billion.

He refuted the claim, stating that if divided, it would imply that each vehicle was worth ₦1 billion, which he deemed unrealistic.

Obasa insisted that the allegations were attempts to discredit his leadership and integrity, emphasizing his long-standing commitment to legislative duties and service to Lagos State.

“Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with N16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho or the wall that demarcated the United States of America and Mexico.

“How can they say we bought one Hilux bus for N1 billion each and that we bought 40 pieces for N40 billion? Talking about Thanksgiving, they should compare the one they said we spent N200 million on and the one organized by the state government.

“I am not disturbed or perturbed, and I am not afraid. I will debunk all the allegations leveled against me by the House.

“I have not done anything wrong. I have been a lawmaker for over two decades, and I am the longest-serving lawmaker in the House,” he said.

“For me, I am not disturbed, perturbed, or afraid. I will address these allegations head-on and prove my innocence,” he asserted.

Reacting to his reported removal, Obasa clarified that there was no impeachment process in the Assembly but rather a removal attempt that did not follow due legislative procedures.

He emphasized that his tenure as Speaker has been marked by dedication and respect for his colleagues, adding that any decision to remove him must adhere to the House’s standing rules.

“I am not afraid of being removed. After all, it is not my father’s chieftaincy title. I am representing my people, and they have returned me six times. If you want to do anything, do it well.

“They did the removal all because I was out of the country. Lagos is a special place; we cannot denigrate the state.

“When former Speaker Rt. Hon. Jokotola Pelumi was removed, he was in the assembly, and we did not invite policemen. When my sister, former Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, was removed, we did not invite the police.

“They should not discredit an innocent person; they should prove their allegations against me. The Lagos State House of Assembly is above the common standard of excellence.

“I have served as Speaker for ten years and as a member of the Assembly since 2003. What else am I looking for? Nothing. But due process must be followed,” he stated.

“I believe in the image of our institution. We must not destroy it, and I will never partake in its destruction.

“I appreciate the members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of the state. He is my brother, and he always calls me his younger brother,” he stated.

Obasa also thanked Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he said would always be his father.

Obasa urged stakeholders and lawmakers to protect the integrity of the Lagos State House of Assembly, referencing previous leadership changes that were handled peacefully and without external interference.

The Speaker also expressed gratitude to his supporters and party leaders, vowing to continue working for the betterment of Lagos State while defending his integrity.

Shun protest, government doing its best, Lagos Speaker appeals

The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa ,has appealed to residents not to participate in the planned  protest against hardship in the interest of peace and progress.

Obasa made tbe appeal  on Wednesday while addressing his constituents at a stakeholders meeting on peace and security in  Agege area of the state.

The Speaker said protest was not needed in the state as the  government was doing its best to meet the needs of the people.

Obasa urged parents and guardians to  discourage their children, wards neighbours and family members from joining the protest or being part of anything that could breach peace in the state.

“We are enjoying the dividends of democracy in Lagos, especially in  Agege, because Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been making life better for us.

“There are many development projects ongoing in Lagos. If the government is doing all these, why will any of us want to be combative towards the government?

“The current inflation is not peculiar to Nigeria alone. It has affected other countries. The ongoing conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the war between  Israel and Palestine, have contributed to inflation.

“The impact of war and insecurity is what we are experiencing now. Both the federal and state governments are doing everything to alleviate these challenges. ” he said.

Also speaking ,Rep. Wale Ahmed, a member representing Agege Federal Constituency at the House of Representative,  appealed to Agege residents not to participate in the protest.

Ahmed, however ,said those who believe the protest should hold should not let it cross the line of a peaceful protest.

The lawmaker noted that he knew President Tinubu had good intentions for Nigerians and he was working hard  to correct the challenges facing the country.

He said everyone, including those planning to foment trouble in the name of protest ,knew the president was trying his best.

He said the president needed more time to fix the country ,urging residents to be patient with the present administration.

The lawmaker acknowledged that things are tough at the moment, but urged citizens to continue to  keep faith with government to turn things around.

The Chairman, Agege Local Covernment Area, Mr Ganiyu Egunjobi, also cautioned residents against joining the protest.

Egunjobi reminded the gathering of the damage caused during the EndSARS protest and stressed the need to protect the  state’s infrastructure.

“Two police stations were burnt down so we don’t want such incidents to repeat itself in Agege because the people of the council are already enjoying the dividend of democracy.”

Ogunjobi while sympathising with  ordinary Nigerians on the present situation , said hardship was a global issue.

Stakeholders at the meeting ,including  religious leaders ,spoke in turns to advise against joining the protest.

The clerics stressed that President  Tinubu had only been in office for a year and needed more time to address the country’s issues.

  • Acquittal: My 12 years prosecution was harrowing – Former Lagos Speaker

Acquittal: My 12 years prosecution was harrowing – Former Lagos Speaker

The  former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiiji, says his acquittal from money laundering related charges and prosecution that spanned over 12 years was a harrowing experience.

The speaker said his joy knew no bounds, describing the experience as a “rebirth of sorts”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the  Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, cleared the former speaker of 54 charges brought against him by the EFCC.

Justice Mohammed Liman dismissed the charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ruling  that the prosecution did not meet the legal burden of proof required.

Addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos, Ikuforiji said: : “I am a very happy man. It feels so great to be free after 12 and half years of prosecution and persecution.

“It is a long story.  Since 48 hours that I am free,  I am extremely grateful to God. When I got out of the court, I called my wife Mayowa, because  I did not tell her while going to the court that day.

“I was even joking with my friend, when the Judge came, that if I had seen a Black Maria, I will have to run away.

“As a strong believer, I always believed in what Almighty Allah decreed. But there are some things as a man in flesh  that you begin to  ask second questions.

“I was at the House of Assembly for 12 years; 10 years, I was speaker and there was no time the lawmakers fought. The Lagos assembly was the best because of the harmonious relationship.

“But if after 10 years of being speaker and leading a progressive house, making  progressive laws, even the National Assembly came to learn some things from us, we passed the FOI Act before them even the  Child Rights Law. “

Ikuforiji, who served as Lagos speaker from 2005 to 2015, said he was wrongly prosecuted but would not sue the EFCC for that.

“I suffered for 12 and half years  over wrongful allegations, I suffered unnecessarily for that period, what was my offence and what did I do?

“A faceless petitioner wrote to the EFCC that the assembly arm twisted the Lagos state government to pay N500 million to it monthly and  later, I was accused of embezzling  the money, amounting to N7 billion.

“Is that not ridiculous that the members did not do anything that I allegedly made away with N500m for 14 months?

“I got a call from the director of EFCC while going to Umrah, I told him I will honour the invitation when I come back. I called him when I returned and he said I should come, I went there that Friday morning and I spent the weekend on the floor of  EFCC cell.

“They showed me the petition and I faulted it, the person that wrote it,  no telephone number.

They asked for the other members and I told them  that I don’t need to get others because I was in charge.

According to him, I spent the weekend there and was released on bail, EFCC came to the house, combed  the books for three months and saw nothing.

“I suffered the  agony for over 12 and half years.  Many sleepless nights.  I thank my Family, colleagues, friends and the media for standing by me.

“The EFCC started with 200 charges and trimmed it to 54  and no one said embezzlement.

“Today we are grateful to God that at the end of it all, we have been vindicated. The honest thing is that in the Quran, even in the dark,  there is always an element of light.

” I am now a Barrister at Law.  This case was what pushed me toward reading law. I was doing well as speaker, My lawyers came up with other things and I felt it was time for me to be learned.

“That is something good, if this trouble was  not thrown at me, I won’t be a lawyer today. My family suffered a great deal. Members of the house  stood by me. Most of them followed me to court on court day, I am grateful to them.

” Lots of our leaders who were praying with me, I salute them. My wife is a Christian and they have been praying for years. God was really merciful to me and gave me people who supported me.

“Today I am a free man, June 24, 2024 remains a second birthday to me because that is the day of my independence, , the day I smelt freedom.

“In 2014, the Federal High Court said I had no case to answer and it went to the Supreme Court and the case was reassigned and here we are today,” Ikuforiji said.

He, however,  said the charges might  have been politically or socially engineered but what mattered the most was that as a politician, stuff like that was expected.

On whether he planned to contest for elective position in 2027, the former speaker said it is God that would determine that.
